Director’s Welcome

Director’s

Welcome We live in challenging times. Governments across the world are struggling to come through an economic crisis, identified as the worst for generations. Inevitably our university is experiencing the shock waves of the downturn in our national economy. As a consequence we are all having to make difficult decisions to ensure the University continues to move forward towards its goal of enhancing its international reputation. Despite this very challenging context, Warwick Sport continues to go from strength to strength; expanding its range of activities and levels of support for our membership. Revenue funding for our 76 sports clubs has reached yet another all time high this year and our plan for the coming years provides for further increases in that support to encourage and assist yet more activities and development programmes. We believe this increased support is reflected in membership satisfaction, but also in terms of results in competition. Our current position of 17th. in the BUCS rankings is highly commendable and puts us up among those universities who have invested substantially more in the support of elite sport, sometimes to the detriment of Sport for All. The underlying philosophy of Warwick Sport since our inception has been to support all levels of performance, through from beginner to elite. Recent national student surveys have reported sport at Warwick recording some of the highest satisfaction levels against all other aspects of the student experience in higher education. Particularly pleasing was the result that suggested our student satisfaction level with sport was higher than in any of the Russell Group of universities; a grouping regarded by many as representing the top UK universities. The successes of Warwick Sport in recent years has set the bar ever higher. Year on year the expectations of our members become ever greater. Recent changes in the staffing to support Warwick Sport will, I am sure, allow us to continue to offer an ever-improving service, providing a sporting environment the envy of students across the UK.

Sports Officer’s Welcome

Officer’s Welcome

Hi, I’m Alex, your Sports Officer this year. Welcome to Warwick and in particular to sport at Warwick. Potentially your years at Warwick are some of the best years of your life as long as you take advantage of all the fabulous opportunities available to you. Having spent three years at Warwick, most of which were spent getting involved in sport, I hope that I have some experience in order to help you enjoy your time here, at least as much as I have. At Warwick our ethos is simple: provide the most opportunities for the most people. We have 76 different sports clubs, placing us in the top 2 Universities nationwide for variety, and out of our 20,000 University members, over 10,000 are members of Warwick Sport. Regardless of your ability or experience, there is something for you, so get stuck in and enjoy the fantastic facilities and opportunities available! The best thing I did when I first arrived was join a sports club. I had never played Lacrosse before coming to university, but like so many clubs at the University my inexperience didn’t matter. It opened me up to so many friends from different courses and years, that I would never have met otherwise. Whether it’s getting involved with Skydiving, Sub Aqua or Climbing there is something for everyone. Each offers something different in terms of atmosphere, people and competitiveness so try as many as you can and I promise you will not regret it. Furthermore taking part in a sports club isn’t only about the sport, most clubs hold weekly socials, tours, meals and nights out, allowing you to celebrate sporting achievements and bond with fellow members of the club. Some of my best nights at Warwick have been club socials.

Alex Twiss Students’ Union Sports Officer

The calendar is also packed with sporting events to get involved in, in particular Varsity & Sports Weeks, Sports Ball, Score and KMPG Leagues so all year round there is something to do. To sum up, there are so many great opportunities and so many different activities here at Warwick. If I can give you one piece of advice, it is to get involved as much as you can and no doubt you will find the perfect fit, allowing you to train and improve yourself at your chosen sports, gain new friends, great memories and give back to the local community and charities. I wish you all the best during your time here.

Not only are the opportunities there for everyone, the facilities at Warwick are top notch, notably, our climbing walls, indoor tennis centre, pool, fitness suite, athletics track and 3G artificial pitch, to name just a few, are superb facilities, the envy of many other universities. Kept in immaculate condition and available to you for a minimal price, there is really no excuse for not getting involved. However, sport at Warwick doesn’t only focus on sport, there are many opportunities for personal development. It is easy to get involved in the local community, gain coaching or refereeing qualifications in your chosen sports and raise money for charity.

Inclusive Fitness Initiative The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) is a programme that supports the fitness industry to become more inclusive, catering for the needs of disabled and non-disabled people alike. The IFI model is driven by developments in four key areas of fitness provision, underpinned by research conducted in 1998, which has led to a holistic approach, ensuring that you should expect a truly inclusive experience when visiting an accredited inclusive fitness facility. These four key areas are: ● Accessible Facilities

● Inclusive Fitness Equipment

● Staff Training

● Inclusive Marketing

As a consequence you should find accessible facilities, equipment that is appropriate for the vast majority of disabled people, a positive culture and staff attitude and a facility that understands the value of a diverse and inclusive customer base. The University of Warwick Sports Centre is aiming to be IFI accredited by 1st October 2009.

Warwick Sport

What is Warwick Sport? Warwick Sport is a collaboration between the Department of Physical Education and Sport and the Students’ Union. This joint venture enables all members of the University Community to benefit from a more co-hesive, cost effective and user friendly approach to sport. The key ideas behind the collaboration is to increase opportunities for every University member to engage in sport at their chosen level.

What is the cost? Warwick Sport invites all University members to apply for membership of Warwick Sport at a flat annual rate of £40. Warwick Sport members can then benefit from a significantly enhanced range of classes, treatment, training and club memberships, taking advantage of services provided by the Students’ Union and the Department of Physical Education and Sport. Each individual Sports Club membership is £4 (excluding Pick and Mix which is free). University members who elect not to join Warwick Sport can still have unlimited access to sports facilities by buying a £2.10 ‘pay and play’ day pass. More than 20 ‘pay and play’ visits a year will lead to an automatic upgrade to full Warwick Sport membership for that year.

What does membership entitle me to? l l l l l l l l

Couple that with some exciting live demos and chances to sample some of the sports right there and then.

Varsity Week Week 10, term 2 is where all sports get to settle the age-old question, who is the better sporting University: Warwick or Coventry? Unbeaten to date the answer is Warwick, but for one week we battle it out with our biggest rival across a whole variety of sports. It culminates in the Varsity Rugby match at the Butts Arena. Be sure to come and support our teams as they take on their bitter rivals with their sporting reputation at stake.

KPMG leagues Throughout the year these football, mixed netball and cricket leagues provide weekly fixtures and a chance to stay active, meet great friends and really enjoy sport. Teams are generally based around flatmates, course mates or just complete randomers. Just ensure you sign up online early in term 1 and these games will be the highlight of your week. Tours One of the highlights of being a member of one of our many sports clubs are the tours that they embark on throughout the year. Each club has a unique tour experience but you are always guaranteed to have a great time as well as get to know your team mates just that little bit better. Some clubs will take part in organised multi sports tournaments in the UK and abroad in which you get to play Universities from across the country, others such as the cricket club look further afield to South Africa or India in search of a new challenge whilst Warwick Snow organise huge trips to ski resorts for in excess of 600 students. Wherever the tour takes you, for however long, with a lot or not quite so much sport they truly are events not to be missed with memories that will last a lifetime.

Sport’s Week Sport at Warwick isn’t all about winning and as an antidote to the intensity of Varsity, Sports Week provides a laid back approach to sport. It is all about what Warwick Sport stands for - getting active and getting involved. Countless events all over campus will let you do just that. Sports Ball A great part of being a member of a sports club is the social life. Your sports mates become your best friends. Sports Ball is the night, to celebrate a year of sporting achievements and banter. A fantastic 3-course dinner, a live band, all your best mates together in once place and everyone looking fabulous in their smartest clothes. The best night of the year.

If you want to learn a feared martial art and enjoy club activities come along and try it out!

Trampolining exec@warwicktrampolining.com http://www.warwicktrampolining.com/ Trampolining is the sport to do at Warwick. The club is fun, friendly and definitely the one to join for all you high flyers out there. We have great coaches who cater for all abilities – from beginners right up to the more experienced trampolinist. We attend competitions held at different universities. So there are exciting opportunities to see other cities and we have an annual tour to Ireland over Easter. Along with training up to three times a week we have great weekly socials. The trampoline club is definitely the most fun on campus. Come along and see for yourself.

Triathlon and Road Cycling su168@sunion.warwick.ac.uk http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~etsag/triathlon/ Triathlon and Road Cycling is an experienced, sociable, fun and friendly club that aims to cater for all abilities, whether you are a complete novice or an experienced athlete. We take part in BUCS competitions as well as local races, from shorter sprint distances to Ironman, and will be catering much more for road cyclists this year with official time trials. If the idea of combining 3 events sounds ridiculous, there is no need to do everything, you can learn to swim with our club coach or just go for a friendly group bike ride and take in the beautiful Warwickshire countryside! Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK so why not come give it a go?

Ultimate Frisbee R.N.John@warwick.ac.uk http://www.warwickbears.co.uk/ What is Ultimate? Ultimate Frisbee is usually described as a cross between American Football and Netball. Played both indoors and outdoors, it is open to anyone, male or female, regardless of experience, and gives you the chance to play all over the UK and even abroad, in what are arguably the most fun tournaments around. Founded in 1976, Warwick Bears Ultimate Frisbee Club was among the first teams to arrive on non-American shores. Now in its 33rd year, the Bears have become the longest surviving team in Europe. Warwick Bears are also famous for our packed social calendar, with weekly instalments of fun and frolics for all. Activities range from “circle” in the Union to ice-skating, bowling, disc golf, paintball and many more.

Volleyball

Wing Tsun

general@warwickvolleyball.co.uk http://www.warwickvolleyball.co.uk/ The Volleyball Club is a popular, multi-cultural club. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, welcoming players of all standards and backgrounds, from those who have never played, to those who dig, set and spike for a living! “Warwick’s volleyball club has the largest proportion of international students of any sports club at the university, and is justifiably proud of its ‘all welcome’ attitude.” The Club runs various men’s and women’s teams who play in BUCS and local leagues, and in 2009 the Women’s 1sts won the BUCS Championship! Regular training and matches improve abilities and give as many people as possible a chance to play competitively.

su173@sunion.warwick.ac.uk www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/socs/su173 We practice Wing Tsun, an ancient form of Kung Fu based on Taoist philosophy. It is designed to create a state of mental and physical excellence, allowing one to move in harmony with an opponent’s strength. Unlike many martial arts Wing Tsun is completely conceptual. It is based on the application of ideas not a set of techniques. Once these ideas have been learned they can be applied in any situation, making Wing Tsun infinitely adaptable and elegantly simple. Interested? Check out our website, easily reached via the Warwick Sport pages.

Warwick Mountains info@warwickmountains.co.uk http://www.mountains.uwcs.co.uk/ One of the most welcoming and active clubs at Warwick. We are full of friendly people who love the outdoors; be it for bimbling in the woods, epic treks across mountains, scrambling or traditional climbing. There are regular trips to various parts of the UK including Snowdonia and the Lake District. For those who get the bug we organise trips to Scotland in the winter and the Alps in the summer for some real mountaineering with courses for beginners. When not on one of the many trips there are regular, diverse and imaginative socials that you won’t want to miss.

Warwick Snow http://www.warwicksnow.net/ The biggest and best sports club on campus, Warwicksnow caters for skiers and boarders alike. With a host of events from Avalanche, the Snow Ball, training sessions, racing and our regular crazy socials you will never be short of things to do. Last year we introduced more than 150 absolute beginners to snow sports. The highlights of the year are our Christmas and Easter Tours catering for both beginners and power addicts providing our members with the week of their lives. The whole of campus is buzzing with anticipation and excitement for the last month before each Tour. So even if you’ve never seen snow before join us in the Snow Lifestyle!

Waterski su196@sunion.warwick.ac.uk www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/socs/su196 This club aims to get as many people into Wakeboarding and Skiing as possible. Wakeboarding and Waterskiing involves being pulled behind power boats to separate ends. If jumps and tricks are more your cup of tea wakeboarding will suit you, while Waterskiing is for speed demons who love to carve. You don’t need any experience to enjoy it, in fact most members of the club are beginners. Thanks to Warwick Sport subsidies, prices are ridiculously small - the usual price for a day on the water with transport works out about £20. Included in the price is full tuition, wetsuits and board/ skis hire.

Weight Training weighttraining@sunion.warwick.ac.uk http://www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/weighttraining We at the Weight Training Club aim to help people take full advantage of the weights available at the University to improve fitness, strength and sporting skills. Weight training is a useful tool in the support of other sporting activities and is a respectable sport in its own right. By providing discounts on supplements, bringing in sports professionals to give help and advice and introducing a nationally recognised grading system, we hope to make this weight training as accessible as possible across the board. Everyone is very friendly and there is a good light-hearted spirit within the Club.

Windsurf windsurf@sunion.warwick.ac.uk http://www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/windsurf Warwick Windsurf is a friendly and lively club, catering for both absolute beginners and experts. We windsurf regularly at Draycote Water, just 20 minutes from campus. The Club has an extensive range of kit, meaning you don’t have to provide anything. As we have our own instructors we can offer internationally recognised RYA qualifications for a fraction of their usual cost. The Club is highly social, with something different going on every week. We also take part in national student windsurfing events, as well as our annual tour, which in the past has been to Turkey, Spain and Greece!

Yoga yoga@sunion.warwick.ac.uk http://www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/yoga/ Yoga can be practiced by anyone! No matter what your shape, size or level of fitness; your practice can be tailored to suit your individual needs. With its wide ranging physical and mental benefits Yoga is a perfect all round exercise that can be done on its own or as a perfect compliment to other forms of exercise including running, team sports and swimming. Yoga is a brilliant exercise for students especially when the workload starts piling on and you need that extra bit of relaxation to get you through. To find out for yourself join Warwick Yoga Society.

ZSK Chinese Kickboxing zsk@sunion.warwick.ac.uk www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/zsk If you are thinking about trying martial art whilst at University then ZSK Chinese Kickboxing is definitely worth a go, whether you are advanced or a total beginner. Classes are perfect for anyone looking to improve their fitness, learn practical self-defence techniques whilst also experiencing the traditional aspects involved in the martial art Zhuan Shu Kuan (ZSK) and most importantly be part of a very sociable and friendly club. Unlike most of the martial arts at the University of Warwick, we regularly offer members the chance to spar in class, although this is not compulsory.

Medics Sport Sport at Warwick Medical School has continued to grow this year with all clubs recruiting large numbers and fielding strong teams on a weekly basis. At present there is the opportunity for students to join a large number of clubs including men’s and woman’s rugby, men’s and woman’s football, cricket, netball, mixed hockey, pool, tennis and there is also a squash ladder which runs throughout the year. Sport at Warwick Medical School is particularly important given the nature of the course, as it allows for integration between the Phase 1 and Phase 2 students. It also provides a lot of fun as well as a much needed distraction away from the stressful nature of the world of medicine. Each club should be very proud of their efforts and achievements in their respective leagues and NAMS (National Association of Medical Schools) tournaments. Such tournaments are a fantastic opportunity for students to visit different parts of the country and test their skills against other medic teams. The teams all performed extremely well with the footballers and rugby players reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Medics Sport is now integrated with Warwick Sport giving more opportunities for all the Clubs to grow and develop, both in numbers and reputation.
