Welcome to the October issue of the Arrow!

Congratulations to everyone who collected their exam results in August! Some great results across the Isle! In this months issue some of the schools celebrate their success. I was celebrating my own daughters success with 3 A’s and 5 B’s. Struggling through academic subjects throughout her school life I was amazed at how well she did. I think the £ signs made a difference and I should have never under estimated her! Don’t forget if your child didn't get the results they wanted in GCSE or A levels and couldn't get on that course of first choice, there are plenty of options throughout the Isle and Doncaster. We regularly advertise schools and colleges. Give them a call or visit them on their open days. The choices are wide and varied! October brings Halloween, I just love it! Inside the Arrow events are advertised at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Boston Park Farm The deadline for the November issue is Thursday 12th October for distribution by the 1st November If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date.

GCSE Records Tumble as Grade 9s pose no problem at Hill House! Isle Pupils at Hill House School are celebrating this year after a record breaking set of GCSE exam results. Despite concerns over how hard the new Grade 9 would be to achieve, the Hill House group won 22 of them, with pride of place going to Belton’s Matthew West, who gained a full set of 9s in English Language, English Literature, and Mathematics, alongside 7A*s, and Epworth’s Arnav Chadha, who secured 9s in Mathematics and English Literature to go with one 8, and 7A*s. A massive 318 of the examinations taken resulted in A*/A or equivalent grades, leading to a record braking 59% of GCSEs earning A*/ A, and 98% of pupils achieved at least 5 good GCSEs including English and Mathematics.

Arnav Chadha hugs his Mum after receiving excellent results

Other outstanding Isle performers at the Auckley school included Eastoft’s Morgan Everatt, who gained one 9, 5A* and 2As, Belton’s Hannah Young, who managed one 9, 7A*s and 2As, while Beatrice Holland earned 6A*s and 3As and Belton’s Charlie Gaffney secured 4A*s and 5As. Staff at the Auckley school were especially pleased to see that their busy international sports’ stars were able to reconcile their budding careers with very good grades; Doncaster and England Hockey player, Annabel Bennett gained 9 GCSEs including an A* and 2As, Great Britain Skier Jodie Grant secured 7 GCSEs including 3As and 4Bs, while GB sailor Tom Parkhurst earned 7 good passes. Headmaster David Holland was delighted with the results, saying ‘we are so proud of this group of pupils; we were thrilled to see last year’s group getting past the 50% mark for A*/ As, but this takes results to a new level. To see 44% of the year group get at least 8As is also wonderful, but so is seeing every pupil achieving what they needed to move on to their Sixth Form studies. It is amazing to see that only 5 GCSEs were graded below C in the whole year group!’

Beatrice Holland opening her fantastic results

Isle pupils, Casey Sanderson, Beatrice Holland, Morgan Everatt, Hannah Young and Amy Jackson all did fantastically well.

South Axholme Academy make their mark as a top 6th Form provider. It’s been an “A”mazing set of results at South Axholme Academy with the very first A level results for the Isle. South Axholme Academy’s 6th Form celebrated in style with its first set of A level results placing them in the top 5% of schools nationally (based on 2016 figures). Sarah Thompson, Principal of the academy said “We are absolutely ecstatic with the A level results obtained by our first ever 6th form cohort. To be in the top 5% of post 16 providers nationally and to have a 100% pass rate with our first cohort of students is an exceptional feat. We were always quietly confident that our fantastic students and dedicated staff would do well, but these results exceed all expectations.” When asked about the success of post 16 study at the academy, Paul Barratt, Chair of Directors of Isle Education Trust said “South Axholme is a traditional 6th form setting, with small classes and staff who really know their students. This sort of provision isn’t replicated anywhere locally and the personal approach along with highly favourable group sizes is a clear recipe for success. We firmly believe that South Axholme 6th Form should be the number one choice for post 16 study in the area. To have such outstanding results from our first cohort is down to the hard work of the students and amazing staff.” Student Ben Dance who gained 3 A levels, 2 A*s and an A is now packing his bags ready to take up his place at Leeds to study Chemical Engineering. Also celebrating were students Frankie Caseley (AAC), Abigail Atherton (BBB), Eleanor Cousins (ABB) and Charlie Thompson (BBC) all of whom are now off to their chosen universities. Congratulations to all our 6th form students on a truly amazing set of results!

The Tour of Britain Cycle race passes the school gates! The North Lincolnshire leg of the Tour of Britain Cycle race passed through Crowle on 5th September and the 1 Km sprint leg finished right outside the school gates. All 518 of our students lined the route and witnessed the excitement as the lead group of 5 world class cyclists sprinted to the line. The lead group was followed a few minutes later by the rest of the competitors in a large group accompanied by the support vehicles, police outriders and emergency vehicles with sirens blaring. The race then proceeded along the rest of the North Lincolnshire route before finishing in Scunthorpe. Our students loved the experience in what must have been their most exciting ever first day back at school! Class of 2017 gain outstanding GCSE results! Following on from the record breaking class of 2016, who made the 4th best progress of all schools in England with the same entry profile, our 2017 leavers have delivered outstanding results in English and maths and top class results in many other subjects. This is a huge achievement against the background of new GCSE’s being much harder, a new numerical grading system being introduced and the removal of coursework. Our students worked incredibly hard with great support from their teachers and parents. As far as the headline figures go 76% of our students achieved a level 4 or above in English and maths and 47% gained a level 5 or above. We have had some stand out individual results such as from Sophie Walker who gained a top level 9 in both English and English Literature a level 7 in maths and A grades in all her other subjects. These results followed by the publication of our excellent Ofsted report following inspection on July 5th puts the academy in a very strong position to go from strength to strength.

Our Academy celebrates another successful Ofsted report! We have just received our Ofsted report having undergone an inspection on 5th July. The outcome was that the academy has again been judged to provide a good quality of education. We are delighted with the outcomes of the report. Inspectors recognised that a ‘good’ inspection outcome is much tougher to gain in 2017 than it was in 2013 when we were last inspected and that we have continued to grow and develop as a school and continued to raise standards. The Lead Inspector told us that the academy is ‘at the very very top end of good’. Inspectors praised the culture that has been developed in the school in which our students want to succeed and said that our students have high aspirations for the future. They found that students feel safe and that our safeguarding is effective. They judged that governors ensure that there are high levels of accountability across the school and that they are proactive in finding out about how the school is working. Our strong GCSE performance for 2017 received since the inspection, including outstanding English and maths results, put us in a very strong position to continue our successful growth and development and with the outstanding team at the academy I am confident we will do so.
