Whether you watch, play, help organise, coach or simply enjoy reading about it, sport touches virtually everyone’s lives and our aim at Sussex Sport is to entertain and inform you about sport in this great county of ours. We continue to get extremely positive feedback from our first three issues – you have written to tell us you love the quality of the journalism, the variety of interesting articles, even the quality of print! Thanks for that, from everyone associated with Sussex Sport. Our letters page which you can find on page 7 is just the forum to discuss the magazine and sport in general. We hope you enjoy it.

There simply aren’t enough pages to cover everything that is going on in the county and we always need your help. If you think your club or someone you know who is making a name for themselves, locally or nationally, deserves some exposure get in touch. It’s your magazine remember. We cover everything from the Albion and Sussex CCC to grass-roots and if you contact us with a good idea expect to see it on the pages of a future issue. Email editorial@sussexsport.co.uk This month we focus on one of the biggest sporting events in the Sussex calendar – the Brighton Half Marathon on February 20. Around 8,000 runners will be pounding the streets, many of them running for good causes, and we have spoken to three of the athletes to get their life-affirming stories as well as organiser Becky Stevens, for whom organising the event is a full-time job, about her hopes to make the event even bigger. With Albion heading we hope for promotion we talk to defender Marcos Painter, one of their most consistent players this season. 2011 began with a fantastic Ashes victory for England’s cricketers in Australia and we caught up with Sussex’s Matt Prior, who played a key role in the success. Look out too for features on Olympic swimming hopeful Charlotte Wooliscroft, East Grinstead hockey club – the most successful team in the country – and cage fighter John Hathaway from Brighton whose sport is one of the fastest-growing in the world and who has fought in front of 17,000 fans in the last year. Our regular columnists Tony Cottey and Michel Kuipers give us their unique take on the Sussex sporting scene and our regular schools’ feature this month spotlights Hurstpierpoint College.

We welcome letters on any subject relating to the magazine or sport in Sussex Please email them to editorial@sussexsport.co.uk or by post to: Kent and Sussex Sport, 3 Ridley Court, Pound Hill, Crawley RH10 3DH. We reserve the right to shorten letters for publication.

I used to attend Warden Park School and have to say that for a state school their commitment to sport was always outstanding. That was about 20 years ago and it was great to see in that they continue to punch above their weight in a variety of sports compared to private schools who obviously enjoy more funding. Well done to Warden Park’s sports staff and pupils and congratulations to Mike Donovan for his excellent article about their achievements. J Pearson, Haywards Heath How good it was to read about all the unsung heroes honoured at the Sussex Sports Awards. Recognising the big names of sport is easy but men and women who operate at grass-roots level, with kids or disabled athletes and often unpaid, deserve more credit. The logo of the awards is ‘a reflection of excellence’. How true that is. Congratulations to all the award winners; coaches, volunteers and competitors. A Salts, Brighton Great to see a nice piece about Des Lynam in Sussex Sport. As everyone knows Des is a massive Albion fan and when I see him at Withdean he always stops to chat about the way the team are playing. Some of the bloopers he has made over the years which you featured were absolutely hilarious! PB, Hove What I like more than anything about Sussex Sport is that you cover different sports rather than just the obvious ones like football and cricket. In your last issue I was interested to read about the triathlete Elisabeth Brama and Emily Llewellyn, the three-day eventer. These are two young people who are

both obviously committed to their sports and their dedication to achieving their goal can only be admired. I wish them every success in following their dreams. R. McCarthy, Eastbourne

what an impressive magazine. It is a must read for all true sports fans in the county and the professional content and appearance can only be admired. Congratulations to all involved in producing this outstanding effort. I don't know what your publication intentions are but will you be providing some form of opportunity to subscribe? J. Stone, Bexhill John – you'll find subscription details within this issue. Our next edition will be out in the first week of April and the plan after that is to go monthly.

England’s Ashes win was a fantastic start to 2011 and congratulations to Matt Prior for the part he has played. Matt must be the most improved international cricketer of the past two years and those of us at Sussex who have followed his career for the last ten years are thrilled for him. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer man. I only wish I could have been in Sydney when he scored his hundred and we won the Ashes. How about something from Matt in Sussex Sport? Lesley Seymour-Groves, Hove Happy to oblige, Lesley. Look out for our tribute to Matt within this issue.

I was secretary of a Brighton League football club for many years in the 1960s and will never forget the kindness Ron Reeve showed me when May I congratulate James I was ‘learning the ropes’ in the days Boardman for his outstanding before we had computers and secretarial photography in your last issue, in work, even for a modest Saturday football particular the portraits of Emily Llewellyn team, was all done with pen, paper and and the yard at Gary and Jane Moore’s post. I was delighted that Ron received racing stables. I’m no expert (I can hardly point my digital camera in the direction of the Torch Trophy – it could not have been awarded to a more deserving person. the subject) but great pictures definitely enhance a magazine like SussexSport. Thanks for highlighting the work he has Debbie Reynolds, Brighton done for football in the county in Sussex You can see more of James’s work at G Atkinson, Lancing Sport. www.boardmanpix.co.uk

The quality of the articles in Sussex Sport is excellent. As a Guardian reader I always look at Paul Weaver’s columns and it’s great that he is contributing to your magazine. Well done to all concerned on a great product – long R Boddie, Seaford may it continue. Paul lives in Hove and has covered Sussex sports for over 30 years. He will be writing a regular column for the magazine from the next issue.

I attended the Sussex Cricket OSCAs ceremony and was delighted to see the coverage in SussexSport. These people do so much fantastic work nurturing the greatest game in the world at grass-roots level and it is great to see their efforts being recognised. Thanks also to Ollie Rayner and Chris Nash who came along and entertained us before the awards. Not quite Morecambe and Wise yet but not bad! A.Walsh, Shoreham

I have read all three issues of Sussex Sport and think is has gone from strength to strength. The most enjoyable article in the last issue was Tommy Bennett, the young tennis player, and especially the bit where he confesses to shouting “Who’s the Daddy” when he wins an important point in one of his matches! It is great to see young people like Tommy and others getting some much-deserved recognition and publicity as they follow their dreams. Good luck to each and every one of them! Paul Fox, Worthing

Former Sussex batsman Tony Cottey casts an amusing eye on the SussexSport scene It really is an exciting time to be involved at Sussex County Cricket Club. The new season is only two months away and as an ex-player I feel really lucky to be back at the club when there is so much positive activity. When asked, I’ve always likened Sussex to the old Nottingham Forest side managed by Brian Clough. They always punched above their weight, winning European Cups, league titles and League Cups in abundance against such wealthy clubs as Liverpool and Manchester United at home and Cologne, Ajax and Hamburg abroad. Sussex has achieved unparalleled success over the last seven years, winning the County Championship in 2003, 2006 and 2007, the C & G Trophy at Lord’s in 2006, the 40-overs League in 2008 and 2009 and the Twenty20 Cup in 2009. This has been achieved on a much smaller budget than the big hitters such as Surrey, Lancashire and the other Test match counties. When you factor in the home-grown players that have played a huge part in this success such as James Kirtley, Jason Lewry, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Mike Yardy, Matt Prior, Chris Nash, Andrew Hodd, Carl Hopkinson, Ollie Rayner, Will Beer, Ben Brown and Joe Gatting it really is a huge success story. I’ll throw another football analogy into the mix. I signed as a player in 1998 with Peter Moores at the helm. He sold me a dream of a five-year plan during which time he believed he could take Sussex from the bottom of the Championship to champions. This was done with a mixture of great work ethic, fantastic team spirit and also an understanding of what a great tradition and history Sussex enjoys. In short, he made you feel very proud to wear the six martlets. When Pete departed in came Mark Robinson, who had been coaching the second XI, to oversee the most successful period in the club’s history. The football analogy? Sussex had developed something similar to the old Boot Room at Anfield where Bob Paisley replaced Bill Shankly and Joe Fagan readily carried on the Liverpool tradition after him. Off the field it has been just as exciting. We are undergoing a total ground redevelopment, featured in this issue, which will be virtually finished for the start of the new season at the end of April. We have a fantastic new hospitality facility on the south-east side of the ground. The Boundary Rooms can cater for 50 to 300 seated guests and are available for seminars, parties, weddings, engagements and club dinners and have attracted great feedback during 2010. We have also held some great dinners with Paul Merson, Phil Bennett and Robert Croft speaking at our “When Cricket meets….” dinners last year. On Thursday March 3 we have Bob Champion, famous for his Grand National victory on Aldaniti, joining us for “Where Cricket meets Racing.” At the southern end of the ground the framework for the new stand is already up as is the new impressive South West Stand which will seat over 1,700 spectators. The Members Pavilion has had a total refurbishment. The “Long Room”, otherwise known as The Jim Parks Bar, can accommodate 200 guests and the newly furnished dining room (Dexters) will be available for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The ground floor will house our fantastic new museum. There is also activity at the Indoor School with a state of the art gym and pool added to the dressing rooms complex. There is an opportunity for businesses to sample what it is like to face Brett Lee and Shane Warne as we have set 12 days aside for corporate team-building events. These will include a net session facing the bowling machine and Merlin, an innovative spin-bowling machine. There will also be a Sussex-type warm-up and an indoor game followed by hospitality. I will be running these events alongside a Sussex player and any companies interested can contact me at the club. The Boundary Club, Sussex’s new networking lunch club, has flourished and has over 60 members and we are still accepting more. As you can see, it really is an exciting time to be involved at Sussex and I hope we see you at the PROBIZ County Ground in 2011 when Sussex aim to add to their already bulging trophy cabinet. www.sussexsport.co.uk March 2011 | SussexSport ■ 9

Race director Becky Stevens has high hopes for the 21st Brighton Half Marathon. After a year working on making the event happen, Stevens will watch the 8,000 serious, semi-serious and fun runners from across the country and the continent, pitter-patter and stagger 13.1 miles for charity and self-esteem on Sunday, February 20. Becky will be keeping her fingers crossed that The Sussex Beacon‘s primary annual fund-raiser will: • Raise £85,000 for the HIV clinical care centre. • Be a big step in putting the city on the running map. • Provide the impetus which ensures the event will grow in size to the level of the prestigious Bath and Reading Half Marathons. The first aim is feasible given that the 2010 race raised £80,000 for The Sussex Beacon but the next two are more ambitious. Mention of Sussex’s seaside city can conjure up images of holiday makers mixing with cool locals in restaurants, clubs, bars, music venues and shops, all intent of having a good time. Becky, who works for The Sussex Beacon, says: “I love the Half Marathon. It’s brilliant. There are not many charities that organise a race of its size. There are a lot of elements to pull together involving the police, the AA, Brighton & Hove City Council, volunteer marshals, paramedics and more. We want an enjoyable race which will encourage runners to return and others to join. For instance, for the more serious runners it is a good time to run as preparation for the Brighton and London Marathons.

Around 8,000 runners will line up for the Brighton Half-Marathon. Mike Donovan speaks to race director Becky Stevens, who aims to make the event bigger and better and to three competitors about their hopes for the race

“When I was working at the Brighton & Hove City Council events office years ago, the race had 2,000 runners. I hope we can have 12,000 next year and then move up to 15,000 like Bath and Reading. It’s good for the city to have a race of this size. It has made such an impact and is growing in popularity.” Becky is confident that the new, flatter route - mainly along the seafront - will produce personal bests by the bucket load. The likes of Olympic champion Sally Gunnell and Norman Cook, aka DJ Fatboy Slim, have taken part. Actor and comedian Steve Coogan started the race which has come a long way since it was first put on by the city’s athletics clubs Brighton and Hove, Phoenix and Arena 80. Everyone it seems are glad they did. Adam Bates, Brighton’s head of tourism and leisure and one of this year’s runners, said: “It gives the city the reputation as a healthy place. It brings people in to spend money which is good for local employment. I’ve done a few half marathons and a couple of marathon and it makes me feel better.” Robin Parfitt, a chef at The Sussex Beacon, is running for the first time. “I felt it was time to take on a physical challenge, and the Brighton Half Marathon seemed like the perfect opportunity as it supports the charity I work for. I currently split my time between preparing healthy meals for everyone at the centre and training for the race – really looking forward to the big day, come down and cheer me on!.” Fiona Powell, who won the women’s race last year while Hertfordshire’s Dave Wardle took the men’s crown out of the county, also hopes she can produce a second successive personal best. She said: “I started running when I moved to Brighton and it has become a regular event for me because I really enjoy it. What do I remember last year? It was cold wet and windy!” Perhaps the sun will shine on the righteous this year.

CORINNE Ellison will compete in the Brighton Half Marathon after a hole-in-the-heart operation

The amateur athlete and qualified nurse and midwife wants to show there is life after major surgery and she goes in feeling like “a new woman” and convinced running saved her life. Brighton-based Corinne was diagnosed last January and had the operation in the summer. She said: “I was quite shocked and it took a while for the reality to sink in. I was fit through my sport and only 28. The symptoms manifested themselves during the Berlin Marathon in September, 2008. I felt awful and so tired. I put it down to the heat but a series of tests revealed I’d been born with a hole in my heart. “The consultants told me I could have dropped down dead if it had gone undetected, like when I did a 16-mile training run the day before my diagnosis! They said my heart was starting to fail because I’d been pushing it so hard with marathon, half-marathon and triathlon races. Then I couldn’t do any exercise - apart from a short walk - while they waited six months for my hole to be big enough for the surgery to be done. “It wasn’t the fear of the operation that was troubling me, more that I could not do what I loved doing. It drove me round the bend. Running is part of who I am. I couldn’t even do my midwifery because of the physical side of the job. “But the experts kept me going by telling me I could get back my fitness. I have taken it slowly and now I’m able to run again this year, starting with the Brighton Half Marathon. I was determined to take part and now I feel like a new woman and a better athlete who can run a personal best. Running saved my life. It brought the problem to the surface quicker than it would otherwise have done. I have been lucky.” Corinne will run to raise funds for Grown Up Congenital Heart Disease charity.

Graham Brooks, 78 and one of the oldest competitors in the race, was born just a few miles from Mandela in South Africa and while he was working his way up from political activist to prisoner 46664 to president of South Africa to a muchloved worldwide icon Graham carved a career in chemical engineering in England while playing squash and developing a passion for long-distance running. He has returned to his homeland twice to compete in the 56-mile Comrades Marathon on a stretch of road out of Durban known as The Land of a Thousand Hills. Graham reckons the Brighton event is a “walk in the park” by comparison. Indeed, he views it merely as preparation for April’s Paris Marathon where competitors are given red wine to drink on the last mile. He said: “I have run Brighton about six times in the past ten years. I used to go faster and although my body’s strong I have to accept I can only go as fast as my heart allows. It is a walk in the park compared to the Comrades Marathon, which is very up and down and you run up to 2,000m above sea level and are kept going by Coke and chocolate. Your body is like a car engine and needs to be re-fuelled. You have to put the strength in your legs and get your body accustomed to running for ten-and-a-half hours doing halfmarathons and a marathon distance every Sunday. You don’t ‘hit the wall’. You just don’t notice it. Similarly, I’m building up for Paris with 10k runs in January and half marathons like Brighton in February and three 20-milers after that.”

Pictures: James Boardman

Graham, who this year will also compete in the Seven Sisters Marathon, the Three Forts Half Marathon and a 10k in Newhaven, has no plans to stop. He might even carry on until is 100. He says: “Running is in the blood. It’s like breakfast - something you do. I’ll go on as long as my body lets me. Two years ago I was up against a 98-year-old Sikh in the Edinburgh Marathon. I’m a spring chicken compared to him but running when I’m 100? We’ll see.”

She guested with the Gully’s Girls dance troupe before Albion took on Millwall at Withdean last season. But pomspoms and a pink-and-white striped football shirt will be replaced by a bright lime green running top and trainers come February 20 when she will line up with 8,000 others for the start of the Brighton Half Marathon along Madeira Drive. She says: “I’m an addict for going outside my comfort zone because I get bored. I also do stand-up comedy. I was petrified of dancing in front of the football fans. The lovely girls taught me a routine to Cheryl Cole’s Fight For This Love, which I believe is about her marriage. I was thinking about the freezing cold not cheating husbands though! But the half-marathon will be a bigger challenge, lasting around two hours rather than three minutes. Most of my time in Brighton is spent in pubs, clubs and music gigs as opposed to jogging along the seafront. “I was never sporty at school or university but wanted to get fitter in my adult life. I’d mastered the gym, boxing training and swimming but never running. Ten minutes and I’d be bored out of my mind. The Brighton Half Marathon people came in to the station to launch it and on a whim I said live on air I’d do their race. There was no way I could wriggle out of it. “There have been low points like attempting my first hill climb. It was up Wilson Avenue and I kept stopping and when I did the distance in training and reached Saltdean I thought ‘why am I doing this? But when I got back to Brighton I didn’t feel too awful and said to myself ‘I can do this’. It’s been useful getting my strength up in the gym, having a training partner and giving up booze, apart from my birthday! It will feel like I have achieved something when I get over the line.”

The Brighton Half Marathon is approaching fast, and if you are one of the 8,000 runners expected at the start line to run the 13.1 miles on 20th February then you are in the final stages of your training now. There has been a lot of hype about the 2011 race with a range of partners, sponsors and supporters announced over the last few weeks, training days taking place and ambassadors keeping us up-to-date with their training progress. The Brighton Half Marathon is one of the most popular and longest established seafront races, the first major city half marathon of the year and the perfect training race for all spring marathons so its popularity is no surprise. Everyone is invited to get involved and help celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Brighton Half Marathon so make sure that Sunday 20th February is in your diary! The main race starts at 9am, with both the start and finish line on Madeira Drive. General public places are sold out but limited Sussex Beacon VIP Bond Places are still available so this is your last chance to enter. Tony Cottey Former Sussex batsman Tony Cottey on comparisons with Paul Collingwood – and his contempt for Kevin Pietersen A couple of years ago I was paid one of the biggest compliments of my career. I bumped into someone who remembered a couple of decent seasons I’d had as a young player with Glamorgan and he asked me why I’d never been picked for England. “Not good enough” was my honest reply. “Nonsense” he said, “I always thought you’d have had the same career as Paul Collingwood.” I was chuffed to be compared favourably with Colly, as I have the utmost respect and admiration for the career he has carved out for himself at the highest level. Colly and I probably share a very similar approach to batting. I think we both decided early on in our careers that we were no Viv Richards or Kevin Pietersen (more of him later!), so we worked out what our strengths and limitations were and played to both. Colly just had that bit extra and was able to carry out his plans on the biggest stage. He was always the man for a crisis and seemed to come alive when England were 100-4 rather than 350-4 which is testament to his character and steely nerve. Even his retirement was all about what was best for the team. He could have hung on and given the selectors a dilemma for the next 12 months, but realised that would only be pinching a year from the Test careers of Eoin Morgan or perhaps Ravi Bopara. His decision proved that, right to the very end, his only thoughts were for English cricket. Which brings me onto Kevin Pietersen. What a shambles of a man. What type of bloke chooses the very moment that England retain the Ashes down under for the first time in 24 years to dredge up a scandal that he created two years ago? Apart from his double hundred in Adelaide, Pietersen has been a bit-part player in the series and that would have been killing him so he thought cheap shots at Peter Moores would get him some headlines. It told me all I needed to know about a bloke who is so desperate for credit that he tried to turn his sacking as captain into some sort of act of martyrdom that led English cricket to new heights. The man is seriously deluded and stands for everything that is the total opposite of what marks Collingwood out as such a great team player. I was delighted that Jimmy Anderson, England’s most influential player in the series apart from Alistair Cook, decided the day after Pietersen’s rant to credit Peter with basically rescuing his Test career, such was the confidence he showed in Anderson who had very much lost his way at Test level when Pete was England coach three years ago. Pietersen should have taken a look around England’s dressing room and realised that the likes of Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann and Chris Tremlett were all given their Test debuts by Peter, whilst the one-day and World Cup-winning t20 squads contain many more players nurtured by the former Sussex coach. The only thing that matches Pietersen’s bitterness would be Peter’s total and absolute pride in watching a team he played a major part in developing winning the Ashes so comprehensively. His silence in response to Pietersen’s selfish and petulant outburst spoke volumes.

the ashes Sussex's Matt Prior says last month’s Ashes triumph was made even more special because of some of the setbacks he had to overcome to be part of the first England team to win in Australia for 24 years. Prior played his 40th Test match when England completed a 3-1 triumph in Sydney and he scored what was the fastest Ashes hundred by an Englishman since Ian Botham at Old Trafford in 1981. But three years ago, after a poor series in Sri Lanka, Prior was replaced for the tour to New Zealand by his former Sussex team-mate Tim Ambrose and did not win his Test place back until 2009, when England lost 1-0 in the West Indies in Andrew Strauss’s first series as captain. “My career has been a massive journey and it’s not just been highs - there have been a few lows as well,” said Prior who made his Sussex debut 11 years ago. “But I think it’s the lows that make this so special. If this happened every day, it wouldn’t feel the same. It’s the work that you put in, the hard times that you have been through that made it so special for every single person who was in that dressing room when we won the Ashes.” Since his recall Prior has not looked back. He averaged 50.40 after finding his form with the bat in the last two Tests and took 23 catches, a testament to the accuracy of the English bowlers but also the continued improvement in his wicket-keeping which can be traced back to 2009 when Prior got back into the side and began working with former England ‘keeper Bruce French. England’s most capped Test cricketer Alec Stewart knows all about the pressures of keeping wicket and being expected to contribute with the bat. He believes that Prior is now alongside India’s MS Dhoni as the leading keeper-batsman in world cricket. Stewart said: “He deserves that tag because of the way his keeping has improved over the last 18 months and the way he is now batting with responsibility. He has been outstanding recently.” Prior’s series average was the best by an England keeper-batsman for more than 20 years. Since 1991 only Stewart, of the seven who have worn the guantlets, averaged more than 20.

It’s another feather in the cap for the boy who learned his cricket at Brighton College and whose Sydney success was enjoyed by his wife Emily, their young son JJ and his father watching with the rest of the Barmy Army in the vast Sydney stands. He added: “It didn’t get any better than that. It was the highlight of my career and undoubtedly the best couple of days of my cricketing life - it was just phenomenal. To be sat in the pavilion of the SCG with all the great players that have been here and the great Ashes memories is very special.

“The backroom staff have been brilliant as well,” he said. “If they weren’t here, we would not have achieved what we did - I’m absolutely certain of that. Touring Australia, we had to be a tight unit and they all contributed.”

“I am so proud to be part of this England team. The performances on the pitch were outstanding: bowlers, batsmen, fielders. But it’s the team unit and the way the guys were in the dressing room that is the thing I’ll treasure for as long as I live.”

Then after a brief rest he will play some county cricket for Sussex in April and May before England’s summer series against Sri Lanka and the world’s top-ranked Test nation India. It’s a daunting schedule, but the hard-working Prior is at the top of his game right now. He would not have it any other way.

As well as Prior, there were others in Team England with strong Sussex connections. The huge improvement in their fielding over the past two years was evident against Australia. Their ground-fielding was superior and they pulled off three run-outs compared to none by their opponents. A lot of credit for that should go to fielding coach Richard Halsall, who was brought into the England set-up by former coach Peter Moores having done a similar job at Sussex when Moores was the county’s coach. After arriving in this country from Zimbabwe in 1993, Halsall taught sport at Eastbourne College before going full-time into cricket with the county in 2003.

Prior enjoyed the celebrations but was soon back to work, having signed up to play in Australia’s Twenty20 competition for Victoria Bushrangers. The 28-year-old is desperate to be England’s first choice keeper in all formats, having not played one-day cricket for his country for more than a year.

Matt's father was in the crowd at Sydney

Another familiar face is Sussex legend Mushtaq Ahmed, England’s popular spin coach and another person brought into Team England by Moores. Their contribution is recognised by Prior.

John has worked in the sports industry for 25 years, most of them in golf management, before he joined Newbery six years ago in a management capacity. Last winter John, 50, decided to branch out on his own. Not in custom-built premises but in a workshop at his home. He said: “During my time at Newbery I made a lot of contacts with both professional and club cricketers at all levels. I understood the quality of bats that some of the best players in the world would use and the personal nature of individual requirements. “I spent last winter honing my bat-making skills and putting together a range of tools and machines. I make bats in a purpose-built workshop which people visit to see their bat in production.”

“I have signed some professionals to use Woodstock gear including Surrey’s Matt Spriegel and Steffan Piolet, who plays for Warwickshire. We have strong links in Australia with Shane Warne’s old club St. Kilda, where our distributor is based, so all in all it is a very exciting time.”

Cricket-bat manufacturing is a big industry with the market flooded with imported bats from the sub-continent, but by using the personal touch, as well as the many contacts he has made around the UK and overseas, John has quickly got Woodstock established. He added: “I am the only director and I chose to sell by offering high quality products direct to clubs, schools and academies rather than through traditional retailers by using a number of re-sellers in the UK. Woodstock also has distributors in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the brand has taken off really well.

Although John may add to his stable of professionals using Woodstock equipment, he believes the company can expand organically through word of mouth and a little advertising. He said: “Woodstock has grown rapidly in the first season and the ambition is simply to keep supplying the highest quality bats and equipment possible. I believe that growth is the result of quality of product and excellent customer service.”

Woodstock manufacturer three bats that have all sold well but the most popular has been the Tour de Force which has a slightly bowed blade with big edges and the weight centred to the lower-middle of the blade. “Customers seem to love the contours, balance and performance and it comes in weights from 2lb 7oz to 3lb,” said John. “I have had very good feedback about the quality and performance of our bats and word of mouth has been the most powerful sales tool. The marketplace is very big but offering the bespoke service has proved very successful to the discerning cricketer.”

Swimming

Anything is possible Storrington swimmer Charlotte Woolliscroft nearly died in pursuit of her Olympic dream.

Mike Donovan hears her inspirational story

Charlotte Woolliscroft has come face to face with death in pursuit of her Olympic dream. The 20-year-old international from Sussex aims to make the British open water swim team when the biggest sporting show on earth comes to London in 2012. Charlotte remains 100 per cent focused on the quest even though a combination of an epileptic condition and shambolic organisation almost claimed her life but for pure good fortune. It was a sunny day in August, 2009, on a stretch of open water in Bulgaria when Charlotte could have ended up breathing her last. It was during the European Championship when Charlotte and her fellow competitors were scheduled to swim three laps of 3km. Unfortunately, the meeting organisers had got the course wrong. It ended up with Charlotte, who is a member of the Shiverers club in Hove, floating exhausted and helpless and about to be swallowed up by the sea. “That could have been it for me. It was really scary. The course was laid out so badly I didn’t know where I was swimming. Halfway through the organisers realised the laps were longer than 3km and put up a sign to cut the length of the race which I didn‘t see".

“I don’t have many of them these days and they are controllable. When I’m competing I have a safety boat nearby and wear a different colour hat from the other swimmers to help identify me as quickly as possible. I make sure I’m hydrated and fed at the right times. It comes on when I get too run down and too tired and not particularly hungry. I’ve since discovered if I go too long without food my blood sugar levels drop.”

“I thought I’d swum 3k in an unwelcoming, wavy, extra salty sea full of jellyfish when I‘d actually done about 1k more than that. It messed up my feeding time. I went for over an hour without taking in any fluids. As I was swimming hard that wasn’t a good idea. It brought on my epileptic condition. I couldn’t see, was in a delirious state and couldn’t make sense of anything.

Her inner drive remains on full throttle thanks to her outlook. She says: “My motto in life is ‘embrace this concept’. Athletes have got to embrace everything. If it’s not good, just embrace it anyway. If you come through it you will feel better.” She cites the example of Sussex’s Gemma Spofforth, who was featured in issue 3 of SussexSport. Gemma has become a world recordbreaking swimmer on course for London 2012 despite the death of her mother and her ongoing battle with pancreatitis. Charlotte said: “After what she’s been through, it’s amazing. But the fact is she has. That’s the mindset you have to have.”

“I felt like I was about to black out. There was no safety boat with me. I put my arms up as I lay on my back and hoped I‘d be spotted. Luckily, someone saw me in distress. I was exhausted and passed out as soon as they pulled me out of the water and into their boat. They wanted to take me to hospital but I knew what was wrong with me and told them, in my delirious state, I’d be fine and to just to give me some water. I was very emotional afterwards. It was such a shock feeling that vulnerable. I could quite easily have gone under.” Charlotte, who has competed in two World and two European Championships suffers from epilepsy. Her condition is defined as ‘a sudden burst of excess electricity in the brain causing temporary disruption in the normal messages passing between brain cells.’ She had her first seizure in December 2008 while with her physiotherapist at a sports testing centre at her Manchester training base and more recently she even damaged the wooden floor of her flat during another attack. She said: “I’m unconscious for the actual seizure and wake up shaking. After my first one the ambulance man asked me who the Queen was and I said Victoria! I couldn’t remember my own name.

22 ■ SussexSport | March 2011 www.sussexsport.co.uk

There are also financial considerations. “It’s been hard,” said Charlotte. “My parents have helped me out hugely but guilt comes with that because they are suffering while I live my dream. Guilt is never healthy. So on top of training six days a week, I work in a call centre for 16 hours over the weekend.”

Charlotte, from Storrington, spent 2010 working on her speed and went into the New Year with plans to do some altitude training in South Africa. In March she will compete in the pool in the British Championships in the 800m and probably 400m. The longer distance is the first of two qualifiers - the second is in May - to make Britain’s team for the summer’s World Open Water Championships after which Olympic selection will be made. An impressive performance at 400m will prove the speed work has been worthwhile and might get her into the World Swimming Championships later this year. The former Lancing College student believes it is all worth it. She has never had a moment’s doubt from when she won the 3,000m UK title in the pool in Sheffield five years ago. “I’d just been going through a tough time and didn’t know what I wanted to do in the sport. I had zero confidence. I never ever thought I’d win a national title. The win cemented in my mind

that this is what I wanted to do. A huge turning point is when you know why you are doing it and things then become a whole lot easier. “I’ve got to see how things go. But I know I want to go to the Olympics. My absolute dream is to get a medal. I’ll get my head down and see what I can do. Nobody thought Becky Adlington was going to come away with two gold medals at Beijing before the actual meet. Anything’s possible.”

Is your workplace up to the challenge?

Double your money with Sportsmatch fund

Brighton-based charity Adventure Unlimited, which runs outdoor activities for children and young people, has guaranteed the future of its innovative New Heights programme, thanks to a grant of almost £240,000 from the Big Lottery Fund. The grant will enable the charity, in partnership with housing association the Hyde Group, to deliver its programme for the next five years in four “challenging” Hyde neighbourhoods in Sussex. New Heights provides year-round skills-based adventure activities such as rock-climbing and archery for 7-14 year olds.

Have you got the team spirit in your office or workplace? If so, the Sussex Sports Series could be a great way to start the New Year. Any Sussex business is eligible to take part. “Last year’s series was great fun. The competitions are a lighthearted way to let off steam and keep fit,” says Series organiser Donna Imrie. The Series kicked off in January with a basketball tournament, and continues later in the year with a range of sports, including Street 20 cricket and the popular beach volleyball tourney.

Sport England’s Sportsmatch fund reopened for applications on 17 January. The fund supports formally constituted not-for-profit organisations and statutory bodies. These might include sports clubs, voluntary organisations, local authorities, schools, universities or national governing bodies of sport, all of whom can apply for matched funding up to a total of £100,000. For example, if a sponsor gives £10,000 to its local rugby club to organise new coaching opportunities in the community, Sport England can match that with a grant of £10,000 – thereby doubling the amount of money available to the club.

Swim school reopens A popular swimming school is to reopen at its former home. Sean’s Swim School was forced to suspend lessons at Bodiam Manor School last term after the school went into administration. But now Bodiam Manor, near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, has reopened as Claremont Senior School, allowing swimming lessons to return. Founder Sean Collins said: “It’s a relief to be able to return to the pool that has been our home for eight years.“We were so upset when we were told that we would have to find somewhere else to hold our lessons.“Being able to come back to the familiar settings of this fantastic facility is a great result for us, for the children we teach and for their families.”

1,000 bursaries for volunteers

Inspired Facilities fund launches April

Cash 4 Clubs grants of up to £1,000

The aim of the Torch Trophy Trust Bursary is to help volunteers improve their skills as coaches or officials if they are unable to do so without funding. The Bursaries provide financial support for those wishing to undertake training. A Torch Trophy Trust Bursary is awarded to enable individuals or groups to enhance their knowledge in order to assist their club, organisation or community to develop their chosen sport, by making grants of up to £1,000.

Sport England has announced its Inspired Facilities Fund as part of its £135m Places People Play intiative. The fund – for clubs, community and voluntary sector groups and councils – will offer grants of between £25,000 and £150,000 towards projects that can prove a local need for a facility to be modernised, extended or modified to open up new sporting opportunities. The fund launches next month, with the first round of applications opening in April.

Cash 4 Clubs offers sports clubs in the UK the chance to win grants ranging from £250 to £1,000. It is a simple scheme aimed at giving community clubs a helping hand and provide the opportunity to raise the money they need to invest in their club. Past winners have used their grants to fund anything from racing wheelchairs and tennis court resurfacing to training all club coaches to Level 1. With awards of £250, £500 and £1,000 available, any sports club can apply as long as they are registered with their sports National Governing Body or local authority.

King Alfred to open £450,000 gym

Netball and cycling lead statistics race

Hove’s ailing King Alfred Leisure Centre is set to open a new £450,000 multifunction gym at the end of January as part of a major refurbishment of its foyer and reception area. The new gym replaces a redundant cafe and includes over 40 LifeFitness cardiovascular and resistance training machines. An adjoining studio area will be equipped with 12 Star Trac static cycles. “It is really exciting to be able to actually give some good news regarding the King Alfred,” said Leisure Centre General Manager Kerry Taylor. “With the level of investment being made, the new gym will be a fabulous addition to our facility.” The refurbishment comes at a pivotal time for the centre. Leisure company Freedom Leisure will take on the day-to-day running of the facility for owners Brighton & Hove Council from 1 April, replacing current management company DC Leisure.

Netball and cycling have seen a marked increase in participation over the last two years, according to the latest figures released by Sport England. The Active People Survey results show that the number of people regularly cycling is up by almost 100,000 over the period. Netball’s participant numbers are up by over 26,000, an increase of a fifth in the size of the sport over two years. Much of this success is due to the Back to Netball programme, encouraging women to return to the sport. “Our Back to Netball scheme in Littlehampton has been particularly successful,” says Hannah Brooks, Netball Development Officer for Sussex. “Women have been happy to return to the sport because our sessions are indoors and very social. We’ve even got a Back to Netball team that now plays in the Worthing & District league.” “England Netball is immensely proud of the success of its Back to Netball scheme,” said England Netball’s Chief Executive, Paul Clark. “It has allowed us to begin to reach out to women who would never have contemplated returning to the game through more traditional structures."

Two GB football teams are aiming for gold at London 2012 (we live in hope that the able-bodied side coached by Stuart Pearce makes it three). It will be the blind and Cerebral Palsy teams that will hopefully be picking up gold medals at the Paralympics. Having a disability should not stop you playing our national game. Here’s how you can take part.

www.visuallyimpairedfootballleague.co.uk

FA National Cerebral Palsy Football League In partnership with the FA, the league includes six regional teams providing competitive opportunities for over-16s. Each team is co-ordinated by either a county FA or professional club with each recruiting the most talented players from respective FA regions. Contact James.Watkins@TheFA.com

FA National Blind Futsal League The FA has worked closely with county associations, professional clubs and universities to develop new and support existing Blind Futsal teams who compete in central venue fixture dates each month and consist of over-16s at differing stages of development. Contact James.Watkins@TheFA.com

English Deaf League Championship and Cup A number of deaf teams in England compete in mainstream leagues. However, English Deaf Football has developed a league for male players with teams competing in up to six fixtures annually organised in north and south groups. www.britishdeaffootball.com

Wheelchair Football League The Wheelchair FA National League has three separate divisions and last season had 17 teams. Divisions operate a promotion and relegation system creating a highly competitive environment. All fixtures are played at a central venue over six weekends. The Wheelchair Football Association is also supporting the development of Regional ‘Powerchair’ Leagues. www.thewfa.org.uk So what is happening in Sussex? Albion in the Community (AITC) have recently launched their third wheelchair club at Freedom Leisure, Bexhill. The sessions will be identical to those that have been a success in Angmering and Portslade which are run by AITC’s qualified coaches and provide an opportunity for many who might otherwise struggle to engage with physical activity. The sessions take

place every Monday between 5pm-6pm and cost £3. They are open to all ages, genders and levels of experience with the view to forming another team within the disability group Seagulls Specials. email jonathanhart_bhafc@hotmail.co.uk

AITC Wheelchair football tournament Albion In The Community hosted this event at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre and it consisted of skills sessions in the morning to get players ready for action followed by a big tournament after lunch. All of the players showed great skills in the drills and the games were closely contested. We were lucky enough to be visited by former Albion skipper Danny Cullip who spent the whole day in a wheelchair, taking part in all of the skills and playing in matches. All players received medals from Danny including tournament winners Oak Grove School.

Tennis In the last issue of Sussex Sport we focussed on those coaches who spend hours at the grassroots level. But how do people get into coaching? And did you know that in Sussex children as young as SIX can act as leaders? They start with a Young Leaders Award where children learn the basics of leadership through STEP - Space, Task, Equipment and People. The programme was created by Sports Leaders UK (www.sportsleadersuk.org) and is aimed for children aged 9-13, however through adaptations Marlow Sports is currently delivering the programme to children as young as six! Once children have reached the age of 14 they can then take part in the Level 1 Sports Leaders Award followed by Level 2 Community Sports Leaders and then Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leaders. These awards give children the expertise to coach and lead other youngsters as well as adults. But to what extent does tennis utilise them? In clubs across Sussex coaches are delivering the LTA-designed Tennis Leader Awards to children so they can then support younger children in their tennis. There are four modules: Planning, Organisation and Communication; Club Media and Communications; Playing Partner/Buddy Hitting and Competition Assistant. • So if you love tennis or know someone who does then visit www.marlowsports.co.uk to find out more. • If you wish to join a club, check out www.sussextennis.net. • There are many free courts in Sussex and a charity called Tennis for Free has a list at www.tennisforfree.com or www.eparktennis.com For tennis coaching always ensure a coach has Public Liability Insurance, a recognised coaching qualification and if they are working with children they must have a CRB check and First Aid qualifications.

Falmer Update: Our first look at the AMEX Tickets for the new American Express Community Stadium at Falmer went on sale last month and the response from Albion fans even took the club by surprise. SussexSport went along to ask a few of the fans what they thought of the new stadium and the dawn of an exciting new era for their club. Phil Coleman: “It’s an awesome set-up, most impressive on the eye and I can’t wait to get in there, hopefully sitting in E block as close to the halfway-line as possible. I’ve been following the Albion since Roy Jennings was captain in the late 1950s so it’s an exciting time for us. We were at the Town Hall years ago when (former chairman) Dick Knight was giving us all the chat about a new stadium and now it’s actually going to happen. This has realised every hope and expectation.” Steve Tennyson: “It’s amazing to be here. Having survived the Goldstone era then the nightmare travelling up to the Priestfield in Gillingham this is the place we want to be at. I haven’t let myself come along here until its near completion and it’s certainly got that wow factor, it’s looks brilliant when you turn the corner and it seems to appear from nowhere. I’ve been following the Albion for 41 years and I can’t wait until August. My two sons are also season-ticket holders so we’re looking forward to many great years moving forward at the Amex, in the East Stand, on the halfway line.” John Knight: “I’m really looking forward to the next era as a fan. I had not been to the stadium before but we’ve been well looked after and everything has been explained to us very carefully. We’re looking at seats in D block which is halfway up the stand near the corporate seating, right near the halfway line, which is perfect. I’ve been watching Albion from the age of eight and I’m now 66. I would watch Albion wherever they are because I’m that much of a fan but it’s great to have a nice stadium and I’m really looking forward to it.” John Rodway: “It’s absolutely marvellous. I’ve only been following the club since 1977 but it’s long enough to have seen the side in the first division then almost in the Conference and now where we are today. We had aspirations of the stadium and they have all been met. We have a decent seat, in D block on the halfway line, just where we want to be. The club has moved in a lot of different directions in recent years and I’m really looking forward to the next era.” Karen Barrett: “I’ve been supporting Albion for years and it’s such an exciting time, I really can’t wait. We’ve had our ups and down but it seems like the club is going in the right direction and it’s such an enjoyable time to be a fan at the moment. It’s the first time I’ve been here to the stadium and it’s truly amazing. I’m fed up with the rain at Withdean but you put up with it like a true supporter but we won’t have to next season and with padded seats I won’t have to take my own cushion to the games anymore!” Ben Holmes: “I’ve been a fan for 12 years, since I was four, so I’ve been through the lows. The new stadium is so much better and I’m really looking forward to a roof and an atmosphere. It’s by far the most exciting time for me as an Albion fan, rivalling the play-off final in 2004 and I’ve now picked my position in the East Stand which I’m happy about.” Andy Kilbey: “I’ve supported the club since four or five and our new home is incredible. I went on the marches and supported the planning process so seeing the ground is incredible. It’s a really exciting time for the club and if could get promoted and play our first game in the Championship at this stadium would be fantastic.” www.sussexsport.co.uk www.sussexsport.co.ukMarch March2011 2011| |SussexSport SussexSport ■■31 31

Keep Believing Marcos Painter played in the Premier League for Birmingham. Now Albion’s reliable defender believes he could be heading back there with the soaring Seagulls In the precarious, dog-eat-dog profession of football you sometimes have to take one or two steps back to move forwards. Serious injury, a change of manager, can knock your career off course. Marcos Painter was only 19 when he played against world stars like Ronaldo and Rooney in the Premier League for Birmingham City against Manchester United. Now 24, the born-and-bred Brummie with the Spanish sounding christian name is re-establishing himself with Brighton in League One. The giddy heights he experienced with his home city club seem a long way off, even with Brighton pushing for promotion to the Championship, but Painter has not given up hope of getting back to the Premier League. “It was an amazing experience and I always think now, when I watch Match Of The Day, I was so lucky to get that chance,” he said. “I only wish I could turn the clock back. I’ll be working hard to get the opportunity again. Every player wants to play in the Premier League and you have to have that belief you can do it one day.” For now Painter is content to have earned a reputation as one of Brighton’s most dependable performers. The left-back joined the Seagulls in the January transfer window just over a year ago, initially on loan from Swansea, before making the switch from Wales to Sussex permanent last summer in a two-year deal. He helped Swansea win the League One title under Roberto Martinez, now manager of Wigan in the top flight. The Spaniard did not hesitate in recommending Painter to his good friend Gus Poyet, the Brighton boss. Painter’s Swansea career was progressing nicely until the joy of being a champion was followed, just a few months later, by the despair of a serious knee injury suffered in a home game against Southampton. “It was October the 25th, 2008,” he recalled. “See, I remember the date still to this day. I’d had a good start to the season, probably one of the best starts I’d had. It was as simple as getting the studs caught in the ground, turning and then agonising pain and complete numbness. That ruled me out for ten months and it was hard.I went through some lows, where I had to really dig in and think about what I wanted to get back to. To get the injury and then for a new manager (Paulo Sousa) to come in caught me at the wrong time really. I am never one to quit and the hard work has been rewarded, because I am back fit, feeling good and strong and playing a lot of games.” Ironically, Painter’s League One title success with Swansea was completed at Withdean, Brighton's temporary turned semi-permanent home since 1999. The Welshmen, already guaranteed to finish top, were presented with the trophy after their 1-0 victory on the final day of the season, the Brighton players forming a guard of honour and clapping them one-by-one. Painter, now a resident of Hove, remembers it well. “It was a brilliant day. I have still got the photos at home and the winners' medal. The last thing I thought after walking off the pitch that day was that I would be here now.” But here he is, hoping history might just repeat itself when Albion tackle promotion rivals Huddersfield in the final game to be played at Withdean at the end of April before the Seagulls move to the American Express Community Stadium at Falmer next season. Painter said: “One thing I thought about when I signed my contract is it will take me into the new stadium. That will be brilliant. There is a buzz around the whole area. We’ve had the tour of the site. Every player wants to be playing on a nice pitch and at a nice ground.” Painter’s career could just turn full circle at The Amex in the future with a return to the Premier League. If Blackpool can do it why not Brighton? “We were playing against a lot of their players not so long ago,” he said. “To see them coping so well with the demands of the Premier League is credit to them. They are a massive inspiration.” 32 ■ SussexSport | March 2011 www.sussexsport.co.uk

This season the Sussex FA have teamed up with the Sir Robert Woodward Academy at Lancing, their local secondary school The association gives work experience opportunities at its headquarters to students as well as offering work to them on a voluntary basis. The Sussex FA also sponsor some of the student activities, including school plays, and are part of the Academy’s Breakfast Group. On the pitch, the Year 7 side lost two games to Chichester School for Boys 1-0 and 4-1 but acquitted themselves well in the first match, which was a National Cup tie, and only lost to a goal in the second period of extra time. Team: Sam Thompson, Samuel Bengar Wells, Elliott Dollner, William Allen, Dennis Bowyer, Lewis Whiting, Harrison Moulton, Caleb Livous, Liam Reynolds (capt), Jerry Hopkins, James Thurgar, Aaron Feldberg, Ethan Simmonds, Dillon Nagle, Owen Fieldus, Thomas Hannan. This year the Academy has entered the Under-19 Sussex Cup and league. This is a new venture and there is a mix of experience and talent in the squad but all players are enthusiastic and keen to play under coach Paul Dollner.

The Football Association, with the support of the Sussex FA, has taken a radical new approach to tackling bad behaviour from fans and players by launching its own football club Respect FC. The aim of the club is not to win silverware or secure a Champions League place, its goal will be to unite fans against the ugly side of the beautiful game to create a safe and enjoyable environment in which it can take place. Appointing comedian and avid Bristol City fan Mark Watson as chairman, the club has been founded through concern from both the top level of the game and the grassroots community around abuse towards referees and poor behaviour on the sidelines. Respect FC is not your usual football club, it’s a football club made up of people from all walks of life with one collective goal – to bring Respect back to the game we all love. For every fan that joins Respect FC, The FA has pledged to put £1 back into the Respect initiative within grassroots football (up to the value of £50,000). Members of the club will be able to vote online at www.RespectFootballClub. com to say how this money is used at the end of the 2010-2011 season. Rallying fans to get behind Respect FC, Mark has filmed an impassioned plea from the club’s modest headquarters which features starring roles from former Liverpool captain Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock, Portsmouth legend Steve Claridge and Sky Sports commentator Chris Kamara. In addition, Mark and Neil gave Respect FC further publicity when they made the draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup with Mark ensuring a great reception the next time he gigs in Crawley when he pulled their ball out after Manchester United! Mark said: “We know that it’s so much easier to take a stand against poor behaviour if you are not on your own, if you have someone else on your team. Collectively we can stand up to the gobby morons. If you’d like to show the people spoiling our game what they’re up against go to www. RespectFootballClub.com to join my new football club. Latest research from The FA has shown that 45% of players, coaches and referees think the Respect programme has improved their experience of the game. The majority of participants surveyed were also aware of the Respect programme's key objectives with 68% recognising that Respect aims to create a safe and enjoyable environment for the game.

In October, a party of 44 pupils went to Wembley as a reward for their contribution to sport at the Academy to watch England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro. www.sussexsport.co.uk March 2011 | SussexSport ■ 35

Crawley and former Albion keeper Michel Kuipers writes in every issue of SussexSport I have to confess that when I decided last summer to continue my career with Crawley the last thing I thought was that they would help me achieve one of my lifetime ambitions. During my Albion career I was fortunate to play at a few Premier League grounds but never Old Trafford. Now I have got my wish after we became the first non-league team since 1994 to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup. The whole Cup run has been a fantastic experience and it has definitely brought what was already a really tight bunch of players in our squad even closer together. From the first tie we played against Newport County back in October to the fourth-round victory over Torquay I don’t think anyone can say that we haven’t deserved to win every time. Since the win over Derby the publicity the club and the players have attracted has really picked up. We have been on TV, radio and even The Sun are sponsoring the back of our shorts. And since we drew Manchester United it has gone off the wall! The lads love it because it is the sort of attention none of us have had too much of during our career. Dannie Bulman played in an FA Cup semi-final with Wycombe but they were a league club. We are a non-league club living the dream and we have loved every minute of it. The support has picked up too. We took 1,100 fans to Torquay and from the moment we went out for the warm-up until the final whistle the backing they gave us was tremendous. They were like our 12th man so Manchester better beware – the decibel levels made by 9,000 Crawley fans at Old Trafford is going to be something else! I was at home watching with my son Duke when the draw was made and as we realised that we would definitely be playing a Premier League club he was getting very excited. And when we were drawn out with Manchester United it was like he was celebrating ten Christmas mornings at once! He will be up at Old Trafford along with quite a few of my relatives from Holland. As soon as the draw was made they were on the phone so there is going to be a lot of us up there hoping to see me keep a clean sheet against Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen! The cup run has improved our league form rather than been a distraction. It just proves that winning matches, whatever the competition, breeds confidence. We approach every game now thinking we are not going to lose and there’s no reason why that shouldn’t continue for the rest of the season. The Cup run has been fantastic, especially for the supporters, and the finances will obviously safeguard the club’s future but our priority has never changed. It has been a great season for Sussex football so far but by the end of it I hope Albion can look forward to Championship football at the wonderful new AMEX stadium and Crawley are in League Two. That has been our aim and while the Cup run is a marvellous bonus we have to make sure that it does not affect what we are trying to achieve. I hope you have enjoyed my column and my thanks to everyone who has passed on their best wishes during the Cup run – it means a lot. www.sussexsport.co.uk March 2011 | SussexSport ■ 37

Old Trafford here we come!

It's the football fairytale that has had not just Sussex but the whole world talking Crawley Town hadn’t won an FA Cup tie for seven years before this season but how they have made up for lost time. Victories over Newport County, Guiseley, Swindon Town, Derby County and Torquay United means they are only the sixth non-league club since the War to reach the fifth round and their reward was the dream tie – Manchester United away! Crawley Town are on the map. The club have been inundated with good luck wishes from around the globe since they knew they would be heading to Old Trafford for a game which will make the club over £1m and secure their future as they try and achieve their main objective this season of promotion to the Football League. Sussex Sport photographer James Boardman has been with them every step of the way during their unforgettable Cup run and here are a selection of his favourite images from the games so far. And who knows, it might not be over yet although if it has to end what a place – Old Trafford in front of 75,000 fans including an army of 9,000 supporting the real Red Devils!

The winter has not been kind to Fontwell Park and its race goers. In December two fixtures were abandoned which was incredibly frustrating for General Manager Phil Bell and his team. Still, Fontwell Park is looking forward to a bright 2011. It is their first full year with the 888sport Premier Grandstand facilities and Fontwell has recently recruited four new members of staff to help drive the business forward. The £6.5 million project was completed towards the end of last summer and boasts a Hospitality Lounge with panoramic views over the entire track and 12 private suites with equally breathtaking vistas. Renovated hospitality facilities have enabled Fontwell to host conferences, parties and weddings all year round. Commercial Manager Grant Elgin joined the team last October and believes the biggest challenge is to get people to understand the range of facilities Fontwell Park has to offer. He said: “One of the things that attracted me to this role was the tremendous scope to develop the business, not just on the 22 race days we offer but on every other day of the year too. We are lucky to have taken on a Business Development Executive Chris Walker and Wedding Coordinator Claire Edwards to help this side of the business fulfill its potential.” On Tuesday March 8, join us in the lounge of the Premier Grandstand for our Betfair sponsored preview of the 2011 Cheltenham Festival. Our panel of experts is: At The Races presenters Matt Chapman and Sean Boyce, tipster Mark 'The Couch' Winstanley, trainer Brendan Powell and Steve Mellish from Racing UK. The panel look ahead to the Gold Cup, Champion Chase, World Hurdle and other feature races. A one-course hot buffet meal is included with coffee and biscuits. Tickets are just £20. To book call 01243 543335. There is plenty in store for race goers in 2011, notably evening racing on Friday 29th April, the same day as the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. This is set to be a big event at Fontwell Park when the finale will be the popular tribute act The Magic of Take That and Robbie.

Plumpton Racecourse is repeating its very popular totesport Cheltenham Festival Preview Evening on Friday March 11. The event promises to be the best yet and features a panel of distinguished racing celebrities including leading Sussex-based owner Andy Stewart, the owner of leading stayer Big Bucks, Channel 4 presenters Richard Hoiles and Mick Fitzgerald, betting pundit Mark 'the Couch' Winstanley, Tom Symonds, who is assistant trainer to Nicky Henderson, and tote PR director George Primarolo. The evening starts with a champagne reception at 7pm followed by dinner and the opportunity to watch the key trial races and debate the chances of the leading contenders for the main races at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival. Tickets are only £50 and can be purchased online at www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk or from the Plumpton Racecourse office by calling 01273 890383.

recognition There's a fair chance you’ve never heard of Brighton fighter John Hathaway but to mixed martial arts fans he is already an established name The former Hove rugby club open-side flanker has made it big in cage fighting and is a rising star of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the leading mixed martial arts (MMA) association in the world. Not since the days of title-winning boxers Chris Eubank and Scott Welch has a Sussex fighter reached such a global audience. His last fight on UFC 120 was watched by a sell-out crowd of 17,133 at the O2 Arena but also beamed across the world on the under-card of the Michael Bisping versus Yoshihiro Akiyama main event. Britian’s biggest name in boxing, world heavyweight champion David Haye, could be forgiven for being a little envious. Haye, who was at the O2 for UFC 120, may have attracted massive attention in Britain in 2010 with his two world title fights but neither were screened live in the United States where MMA is fast becoming the most popular combat sport. You might not have heard of Bisping either but all of his bouts since 2006 have been seen in 147 countries, in 19 languages and Hathaway has joined the Manchester fighter and Nottingham’s Dan Hardy in a select group of elite UK UFC fighters. announced himself as a man to be feared in the welterweight division when he beat UFC legend Diego Sanchez in May last year but his stellar rise stalled against Mike Pyle at the O2 when he lost by a unanimous decision to suffer his first defeat in 15 MMA outings. That defeat has not changed his targets, though, in the sport where fighters use a combination of jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing and wrestling to overcome opponents. Hathaway said: “Eventually I want to be No.1. I have the body-type, the skills, the will and the desire to get to there. I am going to keep working and, hopefully, will get into the top ten by the end of the next year and keep going up the ranks.” Hathaway trains at the London Shootfighters Gym, where Katie Price’s estranged husband Alex Reid is based, and is working on putting right what went wrong against UFC veteran Pyle. Hathaway, who is known as the Hitman, said: “I have learned a lot from the defeat. It’s funny because I don’t normally make those kind of mistakes in fights that I made on the night. “It has shown me the things I have to work on. I have always been fairly confident in the skills set I have and I am always trying to improve what I have

and what I can achieve in the sport. I am working on becoming as good as I can be and this was a bump in the road but the loss has just illustrated that I want this and I want it a lot.” Hathaway, who returns to the octagon (cage) in March, believes that the popularity of UFC will grow in this country, especially with the saturation coverage it enjoys on ESPN satellite sports television. He said: “It’s the fastest growing sport in the world and a lot of things contribute to that. There’s excitement in combat sports and it wasn’t so long ago that everyone would tune in to watch the heavyweight bouts or title fights in boxing. Boxing has faltered, although it picked itself up a little bit recently. But in MMA there are so many different ways a fight can finish so they are always exciting. “A lot of people don’t know about the sport, let alone the athletes in the sport. The public are coming round though especially with UFC putting on shows over here in big arenas. Hopefully everyone next year will have heard of the organisation and fighters will be putting on their best performances for the crowds.”

In cage fighting’s early days pretty much anything seemed to go but UFC has strict rules and fighters are not allowed to head butt, kick a downed opponent, knee a downed opponent in the head or strike the groin or throat to name but a few restrictions.

Athletics

Ten times the challenge Seb Rodger is following in the footsteps of Britain’s great decathletes – and loving the challenge of trying to become a world-class multi-eventer Being world class in one track and field event is tough enough. Those that aspire to be the best must stick to a gruelling training schedule, look after their diet and plan everything in such a meticulous way that they peak at precisely the right moment. Even then there are no guarantees that an injury at a crucial time won't make all the hard work worthless. Multiply all those factors by ten and you discover the challenge facing Sussex’s finest decathlete Seb Rodger. Not only does Rodger have to train for ten events, when it comes to competing he then has to produce top class performances one after the other in the space of two days. One slip and it can ruin months, if not years, of preparation. That is why the likes of Daley Thompson and Dean Macey, along withn female multi-eventers Denise Lewis and Jessica Ennis, have enjoyed a special place in the British public’s hearts over the years. Rodger is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Thompson and Macey after becoming Sussex’s only current full-time athlete. The 19-year-old has a long way to go to match their achievements but can be encouraged by his progress last year. He broke the Sussex decathlon record and tasted success on the world stage for the first time – bagging a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Canada as part of the British 4x400m relay team. His success won him the title of Sussex’s young sports personality of the year in 2010 at the Sussex Sports Awards and there could hardly have been a more deserving winner considering the effort he has to put in. Rodger said: “There is no doubt being a decathlete is hard graft but I love it. I never really planned to be a multi-eventer but when I first joined an athletics club I enjoyed doing lots of events and was pretty good at them so it went from there. “There are only seven days in a week but you need to train for ten events so it can be difficult getting the balance right. I train with athletes who do individual events and they have a lot of respect for what I do. What they do is demanding but then they see that I have to work on another nine events. If you are

a runner or a jumper then you probably do a three or four hour session and that is it for the day but I have to do more. I train in the morning, have a rest in the afternoon and then train again in the evening. I do that six days a week so it is pretty full on.” If the training is tough then what about competition. Ten events in the space of 32 hours is a pretty tall order, especially when the slightest mistake can be so costly. Rodger knows how costly from personal experience. Last summer he was leading after the first day’s events in the national AAAs Championships knowing that a place in the top two would earn him selection for the World Junior Championships. Disaster struck when he was disqualified from the first event on the second day – the 110m hurdles – which wrecked his chances of a medal. He said: “It’s quite funny as I was telling somebody the other day how tiring completing a decathlon is but then worked out if you put all the events together they only take around six minutes in total! But it is the fact you have to be at your best consistently over the period of two days. Somebody doing an individual event does it once, perhaps twice if there are heats, but we have to keep on getting prepared and then performing which is mentally draining as much as physically.” Like any aspiring athlete Rodger dreams of competing at the Olympics one day but admits the London Games may just come too soon with his 20th birthday not until June. However, he believes he has the talent and, more importantly, the dedication to emulate the likes of Thompson, who was based in Crawley during his Olympic success in 1984 and 1988, and Macey in the future. “My aim is to compete at the highest level possible and that is obviously the Olympic Games,” Rodger continued. “That is the aim for a lot of people but I truly believe I have a chance of realising it and that is why I have gone full-time to give myself the best possible shot. London may be too soon as I am still developing but I want to be targeting 2016 for sure. If I didn't compete in an Olympic Games one day I would be disappointed.”

East Br

Spurs footballer Gareth Bale and TV presenter Piers Morgan have stood on East Brighton’s 12th green by the city’s racecourse. They have no doubt spun round to take in the 360-degree panorama atop the South Downs out to the English Channel, along the coast from Beachy Head in the east to Selsey Bill in the west and inland across the county’s rural landscape.

On sunny days, when there is just a gentle breeze, there are few better places to play in Sussex. 50 ■ SussexSport | March 2011 www.sussexsport.co.uk

They are not the only golfers who know why club professional Adrian Milligan talks so passionately about the quality in East Brighton DNA: its greens and fairways and the overall layout designed by five-time Open champion James more than 100 years ago in 1908. When Braid laid it out on naturally-draining chalk he ensured that East Brighton’s 6,346 yard par-72 layout would enjoy all-year-round play. It is extremely rare to have to aim your approach to a temporary green. Milligan said: “We pride ourselves on being open on main greens of exceptional quality for a coastal course 12 months of the year. No one else in this area can say that. A lot of my friends who are golf pros from local clubs will come here and tell you we are in the best of condition - and have been for two or three years. “It remains close to James Braid’s design apart from amendments brought about by modern technology. We are not American-ised with water everywhere. The only water obstacle we have is a natural dew pond. We are a private members’ club but attract a lot of visitors. Gareth Bale has been a couple of times for a game with a friend who I believe is still a member while Piers turns up here every now and then when he is living at his Sussex home. “We get the very affluent to those for whom golf is a real treat. But it doesn’t matter if you are a Premier League footballer, a television personality, a city banker or a tradesman. Everyone comes together and is judged on their golfing ability rather than what they do. We have a lot of return business because the visitors enjoy the experience

The traditions that have been in place since James Braid designed East Brighton mean as much today as they did more than 100 years ago, as Mike Donovan discovered

so much. Many come back to Brighton for a week at a time and spend three or four days of it on our course. Our ethos is to be a welcoming golf club whilst upholding our tradition. Milligan believes East Brighton favours neither scratch golfers nor high handicappers. “It is not like the course is very short and easy for the 20-handicapper to reach the green in two, but likewise it is not so long that it requires a driver and a three-iron for a two-handicapper. It is not a tight course but accuracy is rewarded with approaches to subtlety undulating greens. It is a good test - tough but fair. It offers a good blend of par 3s and par 5s which is something that can’t be said for every course.”

Milligan is a former county match-play champion but these days, at 32, he eschews competition to focus on a 14-hour day at East Brighton. He considers himself to be on the young side to be a club pro but he is Brighton born and bred and was promoted from assistant to the role three years ago; he might be old by time he steps down. He said: “It’s a job for life. A lot of pros stay on to retirement.” In the meantime, he gives tuition, runs a successful shop with assistants Sam Gayler and Ben James and reflects how lucky he is to have joined East Brighton five years ago. “It’s a great place,” he said. “Anyone coming here for the first time will return because it is that sort of golf club.”

Milligan rates the 563-yard fifth as East Brighton’s nearest to a signature hole. “Some like it for the great views. It is a par 5 which heads down the hill with a massive drop. My personal favourite is the 488-yard 11th. It’s an uphill par 5. called The Grinder and is a fairly evil hole! If your shot isn’t perfect you are in trouble - you can’t get away with loose shots, they have to be well directed and controlled. The better player will prosper on it whereas the average club golfer who hits a few wayward ones will generally come unstuck.” With its exposed location East Brighton can turn into a bit of a monster when the wind gets up. But on sunny days, when there is just a gentle breeze, there are few better places to play in Sussex.

Course:

A downland layout open 12 months of the year. East Brighton offers stunning views all around Brighton as well as Woodingdean, Saltdean and Ovingdean to the east. It is the closest course to the city centre. It has a halfway house at nine serving hot drinks and food. There are a couple of climbs on the first 11 holes but from then on it is back to the clubhouse on pretty much flat and occasionally downhill terrain all the way. A dew pond on the sixth hole is the only water hazard.

p e t s r i e h t n i g n Spri Michelle Arthurs profiles Wickers Gym Club, one of the most successful gymnastics clubs in Sussex who are expanding all the time They have been going for 22 years and now Wickers Gym Club are about to embark on another big step forward. Since they were founded by Katy Hodgson, the Lancing-based club have been committed to training children in the art of gymnastics and supporting them into adulthood where they have the chance to gain qualifications and even coach. The club now has more than 300 members and will soon be moving to a larger venue to accommodate them. Accredited both by Sport England and British Gymnastics they have been working to help young gymnasts flourish since 1982. Manager Katy, from Shoreham, opened the club when she was 16-years-old. She said: “I started the club because I wanted to put something back into the local community. I had been a gymnast since the age of three and there was not a club in my area so, along with a couple of friends who were also qualified coaches, we decided to start the club.” The venture was successful from the outset, as Katy explained: “On our first night we had three hour-long sessions and 20 children attended.” Since then, expansion has been steady and Katy now employs nine qualified coaches. The posters on the walls of the gym tell their own story. ‘Training is what we do while our opponent is sleeping’ says one, and the buzz of enthusiasm and determination is unmistakable. However, the atmosphere remains one that promotes fun and enjoyment. Lessons can begin as soon as children are able to walk. These pre-school classes, which children attend with their parents, are designed to bring activity into their lives at an early age and help parents to bond with

Learn valuable listening skills Understand verbal instruction Learn social skills Develop coordination Build strength Make new friends Have fun! 54 ■ SussexSport | March 2011 www.sussexsport.co.uk

Giving children an opportunity to take part in classes such as these can give them a leg-up in development and a huge confidence boost. Katy said: “Gymnastics sessions will enhance co-operative play and turn-taking amongst young children who are still in their early years of social and physical development.” At around two years of age, children are encouraged to join independent classes. Sessions continue to push the children to develop their capabilities and the young athletes are given the chance to perform in competitions and take exams. One member, 14-year-old Abigail, said: “I love Wickers because it is a fun place to be. I get to learn new skills, get British Gymnastics badges, and meet lots of new friends.” Some children fall away from gymnastics as they grow and develop other interests. Others, however, stay, and they are then given the opportunity to take their learning to the next level and when they are 16 undertaking the Level 1 qualification allows them to become coaches and turn their hobby into a livelihood.

For more information see www.wickersgymclub.com or contact Katy Hodgson on 01273 465554

The course involves three to four days of practical training and then the aspiring coaches have to complete a logbook which involves lots of practical tasks over a period of time. After a three-month period they have a rigorous assessment. With its new building and facilities, the Wickers team hope they will be able to upgrade the services they provide. With two coaches now trained in freestyle gymnastics, Katy is now hoping to reach a whole new audience. Excited by the new discipline, she said: “We hope that by offering sessions in free style gymnastics the club will attract new members who are a little older and also it will encourage our older members to stay and try a new skill.” Katy is planning to expand this year. Opening hours will be increasing and she plans to recruit another six members for the leadership programme and two new full-time coaches. All this, combined with the new venue means more classes, more variety and more opportunity. “The last 22 years have been a pleasure” said Katy. “And I can only hope to continue to build the club and see more young athletes achieve their goals.”

their little ones in an active environment. Katy added: “These sessions are an ideal opportunity to help children build strength, develop coordination, learn social skills and make new friends, learn valuable listening skills and follow verbal instruction, all whilst having great fun, and engaging with their parents and carers in a sporting activity.”

Hockey

The dominant force East Grinstead Hockey Club are one of the biggest success stories in Sussex sport, but that wasn’t always the case As Sussex sporting success stories go, there are few that can match the turnaround in fortunes at East Grinstead Hockey Club. Ten years ago the club with such a proud history was on its knees. The men’s first XI was treading water in National League division two with little drive, direction or hope for the future. Move forward to 2011 and they have become the dominant force of English hockey in both the outdoor and indoor formats of the game as well as serious contenders in Europe. Along the way they have picked up a string of honours including being crowned back-to-back national outdoor champions, National Indoor League champions four years on the trot, National Indoor Finals champions three years out of the last five and England Hockey club of the year in 2009. They have also competed in the Champions League-style EuroHockey League for the last three years, reaching the quarter-finals in 2009 before going out to eventual champions Bloemendaal from Holland, and are through to the last 16 this season after a stunning win over last season’s semifinalists RC de Polo de Barcelona helped them top their group. European success has not eluded them indoors either. They were European Indoor Trophy champions in 2010 which has elevated them to the elite division this season. It is a stunning list of achievements which is now being complemented by progress for the ladies’ first XI both outdoors and indoors. It has taken vision, belief, structure and courage to not only match their achievements of the 1980s but surpass them. Back then East Grinstead boasted a string of internationals, with five members of the gold-winning team at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 playing for the club at some stage. Now they also boast plenty of internationals, including 2010 World Young Player of the Year Ashley Jackson, but the intervening years were a period of decline for the club. Realisation that something had to be done came after finishing bottom of National division one in 2001 and then kicking their heels in division two for the next two seasons. Matt Jones, first team manager since 2005 and manager of the indoor squad from 1998 to the present, said: “The club had gone through some very successful years in the 1980s and early 1990s. Then it went through what could be described as a lull in its fortunes.

“The 1st XI slipped out of the premiership and when they dropped out a lot of international players had to seek alternative clubs because that was very much the remit back then and it is pretty much today. When you lose a large chunk of internationals it is very hard to sustain the level. From a 1st XI point of view we spent a lot of time trying to slow the slide down and rebuild the core ethics of the club. Throughout that period the indoor squad somehow managed to maintain its premier division status. That very dogged and never-saydie attitude which is very evident today throughout the club managed to get us through some very hard seasons on the indoor front.” Grinstead’s fortunes began to change with the appointment of Trinidad and Tobago international Kwan Browne as playercoach. Back-to-back promotions returned the club to the premier division for 2005-06 when Mark Pearn took over as player-coach with Jones joining him as manager. The roles Browne and Pearn played have been key, particularly the latter whose playing pedigree having represented Great Britain at two Olympics was unquestioned but who was untried as a coach. But while Pearn and Browne should take their bow, it is others like club captain Phillip Coote, James Leman, Jones and Ann Needle to name a few whose vision, drive and hard work have been the catalyst for success. The secret of that success is the club keep moving the goalposts. As soon as they complete one achievement, they set themselves a new target. Longevity in terms of domestic dominance and competing with the very best in Europe is the ultimate goal. Jones added: “If you sit there and say ‘We’re good, we’re great’ you can almost lull yourself into thinking that is good enough and you don’t need to put much more work into it. That is what drives us on. We are very focused on the next challenge.”
