The Eternal Triangle

tri teamYesterday was the first triangular tournament between Heckmondwike, Huddersfield and Mirfield. It was invented by Clive, Secretary at Heckmondwike and looks likely to be copied by Huddersfield and Mirfield. 3 Clubs sent 4 teams of mostly pairs but some triples and each team played 4 games, 2 against each of the other teams. Sounds complicated but it worked well and after 3 and a half hours Heckmondwike had won 5 of their 16 games, Mirfield 7 and the winners were Huddersfield with 12 wins. A surprising result but very welcome.

The visiting teams were playing on a different surface to their home terrains but that’s one of the reasons the tournament was held. Add a beautiful sunny day, a lovely friendly crowd and lashings of tea, coffee and biscuits in the sumptuous pavilion and it made for a great day out. Here’s to the next event in another endless series. Well done the Greenheads! The team colours looked great.

St Patrick’s Days

There were two petanque themed St Patrick’s days this week. Monday was hosted by Mirfield Petanque Club and yesterday by Huddersfield Petanque Club.

Monday revellers enjoyed such games as “My coche is a potato” and “Tricolor Treasure Hunt” hosted by a genuine irish leprechaun called Harry before settling down to a round of Triples. Later in the club house there were irish cupcakes, a raffle and an irish quiz which was won by the Greenheaders from Huddersfield.

Tuesday started with another genuine irish leprechaun called Brendan as MC and we played Irish petanque for 5 minutes (rules available on request)  before a 3 round melee with 24 players. Players were given Irish lemonade in between games to maintain their energy levels and after 2 hours play the winner of the competition was Ted followed closely by Roger and Paul. Here is the presentation party. Ted won a bottle of champagne and a small shillelagh.

Strangely Huddersfield’s club kit just happens to be Green and Black which fitted in very well.

Brendan commented. “After a successful St Patricks day afternoon in the park I would like to thank all those who turned up and played: also I would like to thank those that helped make it possible:- my glamorous assistant Julie, Paul, for his guidance and belief, our catering staff Sue and Roy as well as those who helped set up and take down the equipment. Thank you.

Your paddy on the park”

We all such a great time that we decided to have a St Georges Day event next month on the 23rd.

Daniel is Winter King.

King_Winter_DrawingAfter 5 months playing on the first sunday of the month often in atrocious conditions we have a winner.

Daniel has won the title of Winter King and received his prize in the clubhouse in front of a small audience as today’s event was cut short after 2 games. League table in the Winners section.

Game 1 was alright but during game 2 we had a range of wintry showers and the organisers were already thinking about a short 3rd game when it just became too bad to continue. Most players by this time were thinking “why am I playing this sodden game?”. The answer is of course you’re enjoying it but there are limits.

On the day Roy won both his games with best points difference to be March winner but Daniel is the season’s winner with Barrie overtaking two players today to take second place.

Sunday 5th April is Easter Egg Melee with lots of eggs for winners. It will also be the first of the Summer Melee league which will be first sunday of the month ending on September 6th. Then Winter league takes over.

Stat Attack

Over the season 41 players took part with 28 the highest attendance. David M won 2 events, Daniel, Barrie, Pat and Roy all won one event each. Some players had high averages (better than Daniel) but those who played regularly were near the top of the charts.
