Afternoon Tea River Cruise – 4 July

We all enjoyed a superb river cruise from Runnymede along to Windsor and back. The weather was lovely, the views interesting and the afternoon tea delicious. Thanks to Sue and Chris for organising this and let’s do it again next year. More photos on the photos page.

An afternoon when Bob’s friends and club members got together to remember all he did for the Club. An All or Nothing competition was played first, won by Sue Stokes, and then we enjoyed an afternoon tea.

Diamond Wedding Anniversary

Congratulations to Phil & Margaret who belatedly celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at the Club. The President v Chairman match was rained off so gave more time for celebrating. The match will now take place on Wednesday, 11 August at 2pm.

Coventry Cup – 22 July 2021

Congratulations to our men for reaching the semi-final of this season’s Coventry Cup although they lost to Farnborough in the next match.

Another enjoyable, if hot, afternoon playing a round robin of 7 teams playing 6 matches of 3 ends, followed by some delicious fish and chips from the Cove Fish Bar. The competition was won by a team of four!! – Alan J, Anne, Trevor and Kate, with Mike G, Chris and Ian runners up.

President v Chairman 5 May 2021

Our first match of this series of five ended in an honorable draw with three of the four rinks going to a tie break set. An enjoyable afternoon for all, finished off with a socially distanced BBQ. The next match is on Wednesday, 26 May.

Pot Luck Elimination 25 April 2021

This was so successful at the end of last season, we thought we would do it again and it proved just as enjoyable. It was a lovely day and it was great to see so many people. The four rinks were won by Alan, Dave, Sue and Phil S. This is a fun competition where everybody has a chance.  We started with four bowls and at the finish of each end, one bowl was eliminated – it might be the nearest to the jack, the furthest from the jack, the shortest, the longest, the furthest right, the furthest left – it depends what is pulled from the drum.  This will continue until there is only one bowl left – the winner.  It doesn’t matter where the jack lands – it can be short, long or to the left or right and bowls outside the rink are not necessarily eliminated.  Just try not to interfere with the neighbouring rinks.

Green Opening 24 April 2021

Following the good news that outdoor bowls can restart, with restrictions, from 29 March, we will be opening the green from Saturday, 24 April – weather permitting. We’ve been doing lots of work around the Club during the winter and have lots of events planned so we are hoping for an exciting and full season.

End of Season October 2020

As the season to draw to a close, its probably worth reflecting on the fact that it’s been a difficult few months for all bowling clubs, some of which have virtually closed down altogether. However, it’s a mark of the people we have that, despite the difficulties, it has continued to flourish with well attended twice weekly roll ups and several superbly supported fun competitions – which have generated a real community spirit within the club. It would be great if we could take that into next season and build upon this achievement.

Pot Luck Elimination 11 October 2020

Similar to Killer Bowls BUT it is pot luck which bowl is eliminated – closest to the jack, furthest from the jack, furthest right, further left. Simple when you get your head round it!

It’s a lot of fun and importantly gives the weaker players an equal shot of winning. Definitely a competition which we will repeat this coming season.

President v Captain 27 September 2020

This is traditionally the club’s first match of the season in the Spring, providing a chance for members to reunite after the winter shutdown. Sadly, because of Covid , things had to change in 2020 and the fixture became the last competitive match of the season, when we had a great turnout of players (think it was 28). A closely fought game was won by the President’s team – or was it the Captain’s ? Away, who cares who won – an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

Crown Green Bowls 29 September 2020

This new event has featured on the club’s calendar for the last couple of years now. A superbly organised competition by Lyn and Peter, which provides an opportunity for members to play another form of the game, with no defined rinks. The upshot is bowls flying all over the place, so you need to keep your eyes peeled ! Anyway, an enjoyable game of great skill. Just a shame we couldn’t finish with the usual fish and chips, but hopefully in 2021 we will !

All or Nothing 20 September 2020

Another novel creation by suggested by someone – to help get us all through the boredom of the 2020 lockdown ! As the game suggests, the only bowl that counts is the one landing closest to the jack. So, not too much counting involved – you either win the end or you don’t!!

Irish Bowls 16 September 2020

Another fun competition which tested the tactics and mindsets of the players. This time the bowls are bowled with no defined target – with the jack being bowled up last.

Short Jack 13 September 2020

This was an experimental competition to involve our members who have difficulty in reaching long jacks and to also to challenge those who can. The jack was placed in three positions – each end and the midpoint – and you bowled to each of these. Normal scoring, but you lost a point if you fired or went in the ditch. Much hilarity and leg pulling prevailed.

Club Two Woods 12 September 2020

Congratulations to Phil Hicks & Ray Hewitt on becoming the Two Wood pairs champions for 2020 after beating Ted Ranger & Phil Scott in a high quality 8 end final. Overall, a lovely afternoon of bowls played in glorious sunshine.

Club Finals 5/6 September 2020

A good turnout for the finals although we were sadly restricted on the number of spectators allowed and couldn’t have our normal feast.

However, there were some great bowls on show. The results can be found on our Club Competitions page.

Killer Bowls 2 September 2020

This is almost a normal bowls game BUT the furthest bowl from the jack is eliminated each time, as well any bowls in the ditch or outside the rink. Continue until only one bowl remains – the winner!!

Mark Greenwood won the event after a four way, one ball eliminator.

Aussie Pairs 16 August 2020

Another great turn out for this competition where the Lead delivers two woods. The players then exchange ends, the skip then delivers four woods. Ends are then exchanged again when the remaining two woods are delivered by the first player. For the next end the roles are reversed. Two groups of five pairs played five rounds of matches with the respective winners being Peter & Roger and Phil S and Lyn.

100 Up 2 August 2020

Great day of bowling at Hawley in the 100 points competition. Well done to Ray, Robin and Roger who ran out as winners. Thanks also to Stephen and Janet for organising and to Jan for another superb bbq – and even the sun was shining.

Club Triples 19 July 2020

Great day had by all at today’s club’s Triples Competition, played with six teams in decent weather. The trio of Stephen Brinkworth, Ann Harper and Ray Hewitt triumphed after five matches of four ends.

In an unusual season when many clubs are playing very little in the way of competitive bowls, it’s really good that at Hawley we had a really well supported event today and have a few more planned in the coming weeks.

First Roll Up

Some members had indicated that they were worried about coming to the green in case no-one else was there, so we started the organised roll-ups. We had to adapt the normal procedure but everyone was just pleased to have some bowls and some company – albeit at a social distance.

Green Opening 1 June 2020

Following advice from Bowls England, we carried out a risk assessment and agreed to open the green so our members could get some fresh air and exercise. With restrictions in place, rinks reduced to four to allow social distancing and plenty of sanitiser around, we were delighted with the number of members who came along and were happy to comply with the limitations.

Whatsapp Group

Group set up to support our members during lockdown. A great place to share some much needed laughs but also to offer and ask for help.

Defibrilator

We are really delighted to install our defibrillator, purchased from the London Hearts charity. Funded by donations from our members. Thank you all.

GREEN CLOSED

Impact of Covid-19

It is clear from the news that the start of the competitive bowling will be delayed and therefor we will not be opening the green until it is safe to do so. Please everyone take care.

Winter Warmers 8 March 2020

This turned out to be the last of our Sunday lunches – an American themed feast. Thanks to Marty for all his hard work and delicious meals.
