Novice triathlon event aims to spark passion for swimming, cycling and running

Tuesday 25 April 2023

A fun, inclusive triathlon that has kickstarted hundreds of peoples’ passion for the sport takes place in May.

The Guernsey Novice Triathlon has a pool swim, flat bike and mostly off-road run with an emphasis on enjoying the challenging but achievable experience.

A free training session tomorrow (Wednesday 26 April) is an opportunity to learn more.

“You don’t need to be fast or have sophisticated kit. Any roadworthy bike will do, any swim stroke will do, and you can walk or jog the final leg at any pace,” said Try a Tri Guernsey director and event organiser Amy Critchlow.

“This is a chance to discover what you can do. If you go on to do more triathlons, that’s fantastic. If it means you start swimming, cycling or running only, that’s brilliant too. It can be an entry point to any of these things in a relaxed, inclusive environment.”

Taking part in the Novice was the first time some of Guernsey’s Island Games squad ever did a triathlon.

The likes of Megan Chapple and Chloe Truffitt came through this route to reach the top of the local tri scene.

It is also a chance to experience first hand what will be unfolding in the triathlon races in July, all something that will add to the enjoyment of watching.

The free practice session takes place at St Sampsons High, meeting at 6pm.

People can learn more about what to expect on the day, inclined the routes, what kit you need and try out some transition skills.

There will be a bike reccy of the start of the bike route.

The Novice Triathlon itself takes place from 8am on 14 May. You can register here.
