JACKRABBIT RIDERS TRAVEL TO USC, GEORGIA

The South Dakota State equestrian team will close out regular season competition this weekend with matchups against a pair of ranked programs from the Southeastern Conference.

The Jackrabbits, 3-5 overall in head-to-head competition this season, begin the weekend with a date at fifth-ranked South Carolina on Friday. Start time is set for 10 a.m. Eastern Time at One Wood Farm in Blythewood, South Carolina. The Gamecocks enter the matchup with a 6-6 overall record, including earning a 12-8 victory over South Dakota State in the Jackrabbits' season opener on Oct. 6 at the DeHaan Equestrian Center in Brookings.

SDSU last competed Feb. 10 and closed the home portion of its schedule with a 14-6 victory over Minnesota Crookston.

Saturday, the Jackrabbits will be in Bishop, Georgia, to take on fourth-ranked Georgia. That matchup at the UGA Equestrian Center is slated for an 11 a.m. ET start.

SDSU and Georgia last met during the 2022-23 season, with the Bulldogs claiming a 13-3 victory in a head-to-head competition hosted by UC Davis.

RIDERS OF THE WEEK: South Dakota State claimed all four ECAC Rider of the Week awards following its opening weekend of competition.
 
In the jumping seat events, Sophia Kregoski (fences) and Julia Werkhoven (flat) were honored for their performances Oct. 6 against South Carolina and Oct. 7 versus Fresno State. Paige Wellendorf (horsemanship) and Shelby Cochran (reining) received the awards in the Western events.
 
Kregoski, a sophomore from Rescue, California, picked up a pair of points in fences after scoring 83 in her matchup versus South Carolina and earning Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) recognition after posting a score of 84 versus Fresno State.
 
A senior from Tempe, Arizona, Werkhoven went 2-0 in flat with respective scores of 77 and 82 against South Carolina and Fresno State. Her 82-point ride resulted in MOP honors in the event.
 
Wellendorf, a junior from Kearney, Missouri, notched a 2-0 record in horsemanship with winning scores of 75 against South Carolina and 70 in horsemanship.
 
Cochran made her reining debut in the head-to-head competition against Fresno State, winning her matchup with a score of 68. Cochran is a senior from Oxford, Iowa.
 
A LOOK AHEAD: The Jackrabbits are scheduled to close out the regular season by taking on a pair of opponents from the Southeastern Conference in early March, starting with a March 1 matchup at South Carolina. SDSU will then travel to Georgia for a head-to-head competition on March 2.
