No. 14 Duke Falls to No. 6 Florida State, 7-3, in Series Finale

Box Score DURHAM – No. 14 Duke Softball (26-7, 8-4 ACC) fell to No. 6 Florida State (26-7, 5-1 ACC), 7-3, in the rubber match on Sunday at Duke Softball Stadium.

Three Blue Devils finished with one hit on the day, led by senior Gisele Tapia's 1-for-2 performance with one RBI.

Freshman Sophie Garner-MacKinnon was pinned with her first loss of the season after giving up three runs, two earned, and one walk during her 0.1 innings in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After an hour-long rain delay, Florida State jumped on the lead early after driving in three runs during the opening frame.
  • The visitors added additional runs in the second and third innings to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • Duke's offense finally ignited in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Ana Gold recorded the Blue Devils' first hit on an infield single.
  • Freshman D'Auna Jennings followed that up with a bunt single to place runners on the corners with no outs. Tapia kept the wheel moving with a double to center field to score Gold and shift Jennings to third.
  • Jennings then came home during the ensuing at bat after Claire Davidson reached on an error by the Seminoles. Sophomore Kelsey Zampa, who came in to pinch run for Tapia, scored Duke's last run of the frame when she beat the tag at home after Kelly Torres reached on a fielder's choice.
  • The Blue Devils tried to keep the momentum going but ultimately weren't able to break through.
  • The Seminoles recorded one final run following a solo home run from Kalei Harding in the top of the sixth before the game was halted.
NOTES
  • The game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to travel restrictions for Florida State.
  • Tapia tallied her sixth double of the year and recorded her 25th RBI.
  • Three members of the Blue Devils pitching staff saw action in the circle tonight in Garner-MacKinnon, junior Jala Wright and freshman Cassidy Curd. The trio combined to strikeout five batters.
  • The loss marks Duke's first ACC series loss since April 2021 when it fell to Florida State, 3-0.
