Regarding USENET on the Mac:

For years, I used a combination of the AGENT (FORTE) news service with the UNISON application. And for years they worked great!

Now, nothing seems to work. I have a Windows-PC friend who scours Usenet daily, and it's easy for him. But I can't figure out how to do this on the Mac OS any longer.

I see there are several services out there - including SABnzbd (newshosting) & NewsDemon.

Has anybody used any of these?
Is anybody out there still accessing usenet on the Mac?
Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, as always.

This client seems to work, though I don't use it much: https://www.usenapp.com

thanks for the feedback. I have used USENAPP and continue to use it occasionally, have had only limited success.

Thanks again and still looking for other options.

For text-based newsgroups, I use Thunderbird.

For binary newsgroups, I use Unison.
(it also works just fine for the text newsgroups, as well)

for some reason UNISON just stopped working for me. No idea why.

I checked for updates, and this is indeed the latest version.

possibly I should delete and re-install?

anyhow, thank you for the feedback!

I found Unison to be really unreliable and prone to crashing. Panic stopped development on it years ago, so it's only going to get worse.

I keep coming back to Unison. It’s not in active development, but I still find it the best.
In addition to the already mentioned Usenetapp, you could try Hogwasher.

Unfortunately, Unison does NOT work anymore in Ventura, and we will have to find an alternative...

Hmmm....
Don't think I'm going to be moving beyond Monterey (even on my MBP 14") for some time... as long as I can get away with...

not sure if anybody is following this from a year ago, but it gets harder and harder to do useNet on the Mac OS, and now it's even harder on Sonoma.

I'll just restate the previous question, can anybody recommend a usenet client (and maybe also a provider) that works on the current Mac OS, Sonoma?

Thanks!

Usenapp works in Sonoma and is pretty regularly updated: Usenapp - The most complete usenet client for Mac OSX.

For text-based newsgroups, I suggest Thunderbird.
For a news server, I recommend "EternalSeptember.org":
(see text file attachment to this post as to how to access it).

For binary newsgroups (that contain downloadable files), I recommend "Unison". It's no longer being developed, but still works.
You'll have to find a "pay for" server that contains such groups.
My recommendation:
You pay in advance for a certain number of gigabytes (for example, 10gb of data).
It's actually the best deal I've ever found for the binary groups.

thank you! I already do have USENAPP, so I am going to give that another try ... and I'm also going to try BLOCKNEWS, and see how that works.

question: USENAPP is trying to sell me something called SUPERSEARCH, which they say is better than MEGASEARCH - has anyone tried that? Does anyone have any suggestions about that?

Again, thank you for all the amazing feedback, so very helpful, as always!

You probably don't need supersearch.

If you want to search usenet, open a browser and try this:

Or... if you're searching non-binary (text) newsgroups, try Unison's search.
