Chestnut-shouldered Petronia (Petronia xanthocollis xanthocollis) 9 February 2016. Ranthambhore, Rajasthan, IN

This is probably a female. Males are similar but usually show a more visible yellow spot on the throat. None of the major authorities seem to be able to agree on its English name. IOC calls it Yellow-throated Sparrow while Howard & Moore call it Chestnut-shouldered Bush Sparrow, and HBW calls it Chestnut-shouldered Bush-Sparrow (with a hyphen). I follow Clements/eBird which calls it Chestnut-shouldered Petronia, a name also used by the Oriental Bird Club and by Birdlife International. Likewise there is rampant disagreement on the correct scientific name. IOC, HBW and Howard & Moore place it in the genus Gymnoris leaving the Common Rock Sparrow as the sole member of Petronia, while Clements/eBird and Birdlife retain Petronia for this and several related birds. The name Petronia derives from an Italian name for the Rock Sparrow based on the Latin "petronius" which means "of rocks."

Some authors lump this species with the Yellow-spotted Petronia (P. pyrgita) of Africa. This is presumably the widespread nominate race found throughout most of India. It intergrades with the paler P. x. transfuga in more arid areas just to the north and west along a somewhat arbitrary line from Haryana to Kutch. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
