COVID-19 UPDATE
Hope all members are keeping well. Falcon Indoor Bowls Club have informed me that they hope to reopen in September depending on Government guidelines. If we are permitted to start bowling again the first night back will be Wednesday 16th September. Please find below a statement from our governing body ESMBA on proposals for the route back on which they are awaiting Government comments. As we have a large area at Falcon it is hoped that we can have more than four on each mat and I have worked out how this can be done with social distancing still being carried out with up to 8 per mat. Further information will be given to all members as soon as I have them to hand.
ENGLISH SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
Please note: This is the Management Committees proposal and is awaiting Government comments
The following is the planned phasing of the Sport of Short Mat Bowls within England. The dates below are only
provisional and will be continually reviewed. The ESMBA will work strictly within Government Guidelines.
It is worth remembering that over 80% of our membership is over 65, of which many if not all have been shielding
for 12 weeks or more. It is our National duty not just to protect our membership but also the local communities they
come from.
The ESMBA is committed to resuming the sport but only when it is deemed to be safe to do so.
Members will have the right to decide if they wish to resume or not and should not feel pressured by any other club
members to participate if they do not feel safe to do so. Members that do feel pressured should raise their concerns
with the County Safeguarding officer who will investigate and take necessary action.
Please remember the following dates will be fluid and are a guideline only.
1. All International matches will be cancelled until March 2021 (re arranged World Championships)
2. The diary will be clear of England days and games (to enable Counties to use these later in the year
when safe to do so).
3. The ESMBA National Championships 2019/20 will be postponed until April 2021. There will be no
qualifiers for the Main Nationals this season.
4. September 2020 – Clubs will be able to open for social roll ups, maximum four per mat providing
they have meet the criteria laid down by the ESMBA, and approved to do so.
5. October 2020 – Clubs will be able to increase their participation from four to six per mat, if they can
comply with the then social distance guidance.
6. November 2020 – Inter club activities will be permitted. (guidelines will be issued nearer the time).
7. December 2020 – County Open competitions will be permitted (guidelines will be issued nearer the
time).
8. January 2021 – The ESMBA will look to run knock out and open Competition based at Club level.
9. January/February 2021 – Counties will be able to run National O55s and Mixed Fours qualifiers.
10. The ESMBA membership will remain due for the Association. There will be a reduced playing diary
at National level but the Administration of the Association will remain the same. Both the ESMBA
and County Associations will be there for the support of their members. The Personal Accident
insurance will still cover personal Accidents whilst playing and in official capacity of Short Mat
Bowls.
11. The ESMBA is to allocate a large proportion of the coming seasons membership fee to a Covid-19
fund and invite applicants to apply for funding to ensure their clubs are compliant and remain
active. (Details to follow).
At all times the ESMBA will work within the Governments guidelines, be it at national or local level.
CHAMPIONS AGAIN 2020
Congratulations to Falcon Blues becoming champions of Division One for the third year running after getting maximum points against Springhouse tonight. With two games to go they can not be caught
SPRINGHOUSE OPEN – SATURDAY 25TH JANUARY 2020
After a 6 year gap Springhouse run their open competition again. Stonyhill were the winners when the last competition was held in 2014. There were 16 teams that took part, each having 5 games each and 5 points were awarded for a win, 3 for a draw and 1 point for each end won. Under the name of Falcon was David and Mark Chittock with Emily Poulter and Tony Ealham. In their first game they beat Hadleigh 14-8 and scoring 10 points. Their second match against Three Degrees gave them 11 points with a 12-4 win. Ramsden Rooks were the opponents for the third game which ended in a 7-4 victory and 10 points. In the fourth match against the East Tilbury quartet of Eileen Smith-Allen, Andy Philbrick, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child was a close game and ended in a fair 5-5 draw and with 3 ends won giving them 6 points. The final match resulted in a 14-5 victory against Canvey Island Mallards and also brought them 11 points. After the five games Falcon were the eventual winners with a total of 48 points and East Tilbury were the runners up.
CLUB SINGLES FINAL – 2019
Congratulations to Adrian Atkinson on becoming the clubs singles champion for 2019 and to Pauline Child for being runners up. It was a terrific final which was a game of three thirds. Adrian went storming ahead 8-3 but then Pauline got back to level it at 9-9 but a 2, 2 and a 3 over the last 3 ends gave the title to Adrian and a new name goes on the trophy.

The winners of the club pairs for 2019 were Jonathan East and Tony Ealham who beat Pauline Child and Mark Chittock 13-10 in an excellent final
ISLAND OPEN FOURS – SATURDAY 3RD AUGUST 2019
Island Open Fours was held where 20 teams took part. Falcon had two teams taking part. There were four groups of 5 with the top two going onto the knock out stages. It was 2 points for a win and a point for each end won. Falcon whites were represented by Peter Harris, Yvonne Steel, Stewart Blackhall and Adrian Atkinson. Unfortunately they didn’t win a game in their round robin. Losing 3-6, 2-14, 7-10 and 6-13 to Wickford, East Hanningfield, Maidstone and Warren respectively. Falcon Blues was represented by David and Mark Chittock, Andy Philbrick and Tony Ealham. They topped their group with 26 points by beating Sanguine 7-3, East Tilbury ‘2’ 11-1, Gulls ‘A’ 10-5 but losing to Suffolk 5-7. In the quarter Finals they beat Warren 9-6, then Gulls ‘B’ in the Semi Final 10-5. The Final against an Outwood Common four of Joan and Alan Kay, Linda Willingham and Linda Lambert was a very close and exciting game that went down to the last two woods with Falcon clawing out an 8-7 victory after going into the last end 7 each. SAMMY LAMBERT MEMORIAL TRIPLES 2019
The above competition was held at Falcon on Sunday 7th July where 45 teams took part. They were split into 9 groups of 5 with the top 3 teams qualifying for the knock out stages. There was a number of Falcon members taking part with Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child going out at the quarter final stages and Pat High with Carol and Bob Taylor reaching the semi final. Unfortunately Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham just failed to successfully defend their title by losing 4-8 in the final to a strong triple of Edward Sawbridge, Steve Mcallister and Leigh Hall.

The friendly at home to East Tilbury that was due on Wednesday 31st July will now be played on Wednesday 11th September
CLUB MEMORIAL TRIPLES 2019
The annual memorial triples for 2019 was held at Falcon on Wednesday 19th June. There were 7 teams taking part and it was played on a league basis. The eventual winners were Jonathan East, Jean Davis and Alan High with the runners up being Tony Miles, Greg Wade and Steve Spooner. HOLIDAY PAIRS – SUNDAY 5TH MAY 2019
The holiday pairs was held at Deans Sports Centre and Falcon had several members taking part. Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child topped their group to qualify for the main competition. Unfortunately they got knocked out in the first round of the knock out stages to the eventual winners Paul Bax and Steve Killington. Brenda Crowe, playing with Josie Robinson qualified for the plate and were the winners by defeating Christine and Paul Reid in the final. Congratulations and well done to Brenda and Josie.
CONGRATULATIONS TO MARK CHITTOCK
Congratulations to Mark Chittock after it has been confirmed that he finished high enough in the order of merit in the SMPT season to be one of four players to represent England at the SMPT World Cup in August which is being held at Falcon. He has also moved up 5 places to be ranked number 11 in the world.
COUNTY ‘A’ TEAM SO CLOSE AGAIN
The final of the rinks competition was held at Daventry on Saturday 6th April 2019. In the Essex team were several Falcon members namely Eileen Smith-Allen, Adrian Atkinson, Pauline Child, Brenda Crowe and Peggy May. After qualifying from the group stages by topping their group they came across a strong Dorset team in the final which unfortunately went Dorset’s way. BLUES ARE CHAMPIONS AGAIN
Falcon Blues became Division One Champions for the second year running after beating Hadleigh Blues on Wednesday night (27/3/19) with a game to spare. Well done and congratulations to Greg and Rob Wade, David and Mark Chittock, Jonathan East, Andy Philbrick, Adrian Atkinson, Tony Ealham and Adam Bailey who more than played his part.
COUNTY ‘A’ TEAM SO UNLUCKY
The final of the Consolation Inter County Championships was held at Daventry on Sunday 17th March 2019 where Dorset, who were last years winners of this particular trophy incidentally were Essex opponents. Two Falcon members Brenda Crowe and Adrian Atkinson were in the Essex team and after all 4 sessions the score was 20 each. With the deduction of the bonus points it was still a draw so a 3 mat single matches over one end had to be played to decide the outcome. Unfortunately Dorset were the victors 2-1.
EUROPEAN OPEN PAIRS – BELGIUM 9TH/10TH MARCH 2019
The European open pairs was held in Herentals in Belgium over the weekend where 64 teams took part. They were split into 8 groups of 8 with the top 4 going into the main competition and the remaining 4 going into the plate. Four players from Falcon took part and Dave and Mark Chittock unfortunately came 6th in their group after winning two games gaining 6 points so went into the plate. Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham won 4 of their 7 group games gaining 12 points but just missed out going into the main competition on the head to head rule. In the first round of the plate Pat and Tony got a bye where as Dave and Mark beat Paula Greens and Ils Belmans from Belgium 12-7. In the last 16 their journey came to an end as they lost out to Mitchell and Sadie Young 7-12. Pat and Tony beat Pontus Guldestam and Peter Strandquist from Sweden 15-4. The Quarter Final was a very tight affair but they managed to get through 10-9 against Jan Svenungsen and Olav Jeremiassen from Norway. In the semi final against Wendy Ford and Mark Hollis from Hampshire which was another tight game Pat and Tony pulled off an 8-5 victory. The final itself was an all Essex affair and in an excellent final Pat and Tony just lost out to Mitchell and Sadie Young 7-8.
HUNNABALL FOURS – SATURDAY 16th FEBRUARY 2019
The above competition was held at PML where 16 teams took part. Each team had 4 games over 9 ends with 10 points for a win, 5 for a draw and a point for each end won. Falcon won all 4 games beating 3G 10-4 winning 6 ends, Outwood Common ‘2’ 17-5 winning 5 ends, Outwood Common ‘1’ 11-2 winning 6 ends and in their last game beat Hatfield 13-5 also winning 6 ends. This gave them a massive total of 63 points to win the competition for the second year running. Well done and congratulations go to Mark Chittock, Jonathon East, Andy Philbrick and Tony Ealham
SMPT ENGLISH MASTERS – FEBRUARY 2019
A massive congratulations must go to Mark Chittock who reached the quarter finals of the SMPT English Masters held at Falcon at the weekend. Unfortunately he lost to Trevor Brian from Ireland in a close game 9-10. This pushes Mark up to number 16 in the world rankings and he is strongly pushing for a World Cup place. Other Falcon members were involved to. Along the way mark knocked out Tony Ealham (88) in a close encounter 10-12 at the last 64 stage. Greg Wade (240) also qualified for the main competition and reached the last 32 by going out to Andrew Jones from Wales 11-12. Rob Wade (195) also made it to the last 32 but went out to Owen Cranston from Norfolk 6-15. Dave Chittock (86) who put on a brave performance all weekend went out in the plate at the last 64 stage by Chris Duncan 4-14. Adam Bailey(434) went out in the last 32 of the plate to Karl Nordlund from Sweden 5-12. Bob Taylor (591) went out in the shield at the last 64 stage to Dianne Bell 7-13. Andy Philbrick (636) making her debut also went out at the last 64 stage of the shield losing to Laura Hawksworth from Norfolk 10-13. Brenda Crowe (583) went out at the last 32 stage of the shield losing to Fred Wynes from Scotland 11-12. Figures in brackets are world ranking positions.
JENNY ORPIN OPEN FOURS – 20TH JANUARY 2019
The above competition was held at East Hanningfield where 20 teams took part. They were split into 4 groups of 5 where the top two would qualify for the knock out stages. Falcon had two teams in the competition and were unfortunately drawn in the same group. Falcon Blues were represented by Andy Philbrick, Jonothan East, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham and with 7 points they topped the group. Falcon Whites represented by Stewart Blackhall, Moira Baker, Peter Harris and Adrian Atkinson finished in runners up spot on 6 points. In the Quarter Finals the Blues came across Carol and Bob Taylor with Pat and Alan High and were totally outplayed and the Willow Park four deservedly went through 7-2. The Whites went through by beating Honey and John Bleach, Neil Paul and Doreen Thompson 7-4. In the Semi Finals the whites went through with the last wood by just beating Tony Slater, Dave Woods, Christine and Paul Reed 6-5. The other Semi was won by the Wade Family in another close game 8-5. In a final where all 8 players were Falcon members the eventual winners were Greg, Joan, John and Rob Wade winning 8-5 and Stewart, Moira, Peter and Adrian were the runners up. Congratualations and well done to all of you. Just one final statistic there was 22 Falcon members out of 32 in the Quarters.

NATIONAL SINGLES QUALIFIERS – 2018/19
ROB WADE SO CLOSE !!!!!
The above competition took place at Deans Sports Centre where 48 players took part. They were split into 12 groups where the top two qualified for the main competition and the remainder going into the plate. There were a number of Falcon members taking part but unfortunately the defending champion Tony Ealham had to pull out due to injury. Peggy May was drawn in Group ‘A’ and unfortunately the England Ladies player totalled one point to finish bottom of the Group and therefore went into the plate. Brenda Crowe, Bob Taylor and Rob Wade were all drawn in Group ‘ C’. At the end of their group matches Rob topped the group on 6 points with Brenda with 4 points finishing in runners up spot. Bob just missed out, finishing in 3rd position on 2 points. Mark Chittock was drawn in Group ‘E’ and topped the Group on 5 points. Denise Martin and Jackie Spooner were in Group ‘G’ and three players finished with 4 points but unfortunately Jackie finished in 3rd spot on shot difference by one shot. Denise was behind her in 4th position. Carol Taylor, a late replacement was drawn in Group ‘I’ and demolished the field by winning all three games to top the group. Steve Spooner was in Group ‘J’ and like his wife finished in 3rd spot. Dave Chittock and Greg Wade were drawn in Group ‘K’ where Dave convincingly won their match 16-3. However Greg recovered and again 3 players finished on 4 points. On shot difference Greg topped the group and Dave just missed out in 3rd spot. Pauline Child in Group ‘L’ convincingly won her three matches to top the group. In the preliminary round of the Plate Dave beat Haley Clayton 19-1 whilst Peggy scraped through 8-7 against Bobbie Addis. In the last 16 Denise Martin unfortunately went out to Dave Woods 2-25. Bob Taylor went out to Josie Robinson 7-12. Peggy in another close match saw herself creep home 10-8 against Jackie. Steve went out to Peter Skippen 12-3. In this round unfortunately Dave’s opponent was taken ill and so had to withdraw giving Dave a bye. In the quarter finals Dave beat county newcomer Peter Skippen 16-1 whilst Peggy went out to Keith Johns 5-14. In the semi finals Dave beat Keith Johns 12-4 and went onto win the final by beating Dave Woods. So to the main Competition. In the Preliminary round in a close game Mark beat Shannon Mead 10-9. Brenda beat Greg 7-6 in another close game. In the last 16 in an all Falcon affair Rob was the victor against Mark 9-4. Pauline went out to John Pye 4-11 whilst in another all Falcon affair Carol just lost out to Brenda 7-9 in a very tight game. The next round was the Quarter Finals where the winners would be representing Essex in the National Finals at Melton Mowbray in April 2019. In a close game which went to an extra end Rob came from behind to defeat Del Coates 9-8. Unfortunately Brenda went out to last years semi finalist Dave Wooler 5-9. Rob also won his semi final 11-4 against Terry Mead. Rob went into the final hoping to keep the trophy at Falcon but unfortunately by his own admission found the mat difficult and lost to Dave Wooler 4-11. Congratulations to Rob Wade on becoming Essex Singles Runner Up and qualifying for the National Singles Finals
NATIONAL TRIPLES QUALIFIERS – 2018/19
The above competition took place at Deans Sports Centre where 28 teams took part. They were split into four groups of five where the top three would qualify and two groups of four with the top two qualifying. The remainder went into the plate. There was a number of Falcon members taking part. In Group ‘A’ was Denise Martin who was playing with Margaret and Gary Sutton. They managed to gain 4 points from their 4 group games but just got edged out into fourth position on the head to head rule. Also in this Group were Carol and Bob Taylor who were playing with Keef Paxman. They topped this Group on 6 points. In Group ‘B’ was Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham. Three teams finished on 6 points in this Group but the Falcon three were pushed into runners up spot by shot difference. Brenda Crowe playing with Josie Robinson and Sandra Stanton were drawn in Group ‘C’. Unfortunately they were drawn in a tough Group and so finished in 5th spot. Andy Philbrick with Greg and Rob Wade were in Group ‘D’ and finished with 4 points and just missed out on qualifying on shot difference by Jackie and Steve Spooner with Sandra Tolfrey. In Group ‘E’ were Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child. This was a Group of four and they finished in third spot with 2 points so just missed out on qualifying. Finally in Group’F’ was Peggy May who was playing with Shannon and Terry Meadwho topped their Group on 6 points. In the preliminary round of the plate Brenda Crowe won 7-4 and Pauline Child also went through winning 11-6. In the plate Quarter Finals Brenda Crowe’s triple defeated Denise Martin’s triple 15-2. Pauline Child rink won convincingly against Linda Lambert, Joan and Alan Kay 11-1 as did Rob Wade’s three beating Rochford 13-1. In the Semi Finals Pauline beat Brenda 11-2 and Rob beating Paul Reed triple 9-5. In the final Andy, Greg and Rob defeated Eileen Pat and Pauline 10-2. So onto the main competition. In the last 16 round Carol, Bob and Keef beat a Hadleigh three heavily 14-3. Sandra, Jackie and Steve Spooner went out to Peggy, Shannon and Terry Mead in a close game 5-7. Dave, Mark and Tony were involved in a tight game with Dave and Josh Woods who were playing with John Pye and it was all square with 2 ends to go but a 6 on the next end and conceding a 2 put them through as 13-9 winners. The next round was the Quarter Finals and the winners of this round would represent Essex at the Nationals in April. Carol, Bob and Keef were involved in a close encounter against Penny And Pauline Lowe with Mitchell Young and won it on the last end by 6-5. Dave, Mark and Tony were involved in a tactical battle against Steve Killington, Paul Bax and Anthony Fautley but came through as 11-5 winners. In the Semi Finals again Carol, Bob and Keef were involved in a close game against a very strong three of Peter Fautley, Nigel Reed and Barry Hedges but unfortunately on this occasion they just lost out 5-6. Dave, Mark and Tony came up against the Poulter family of Sylvia, Dave and Emily and in a close game Tony’s three scored a 1 and a 2 on the last 2 ends to run out 8-5 winners. In the Final Dave, Mark and Tony were 6-3 behind with 2 ends to go but managed to score a 1 and 2 to level the match 6-6 and to take into an extra end. The match was decided with the last wood and Dave, Mark and Tony became Essex Triples Champions winning 7-6. Carol, Bob and Keef lost out 4-12 in their 3rd/4th place playoff. Well done and congratulations to Dave Chittock, Mark Chittock, Tony Ealham, Carol and Bob Taylor on qualifying for the National Triple Finals at Melton Mowbray in April 2019 for the second year running.
NATIONAL FOURS QUALIFIERS – 2018/19
The above competition took place at Deans Sports Centre where 17 teams took part which were split into three groups of four and one of five with the top two from each group going into the main competition and the remainder going into the plate. Altogether 19 Falcon members took part. Denise Martin played with Pat and Jeff Hodgkins together with Pat Cross were drawn in Group ‘A’. This was a Group of 5 and unfortunately only managed to gain 2 points from their 4 games and therefore went into the plate. Brenda Crowe who was playing with Josie Robinson, Sandra Stanton and Beryl Gardiner were drawn in Group ‘B’ also only managed to gain 2 points and also went into the plate. In this Group were also the four of Greg Wade, Emily Poulter, Jonathon East and Rob Wade. They qualified for the main competition as runners up on 4 points from their 3 games. In Group ‘C’ was Jean Davis who teamed up with Denise Turner, Carol Howlett and Michelle Howe. Unfortunately they lost all 3 games, so went into the plate. Also in this Group were Eileen Smith-Allen, Brenda Neil, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child who finished in runners up spot on 4 points to go into the main. A late call up for Bob Taylor to the team of Colin Addis, Shannon and Terry Mead were also in this Group but went into the plate having finished in 3rd position on 2 points. Finally in Group ‘D’ were Andy Philbrick, Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham who qualified in top position by shot difference with 5 points and in runners up were Jackie and Steve Spooner together with Peggy May and Adrian Atkinson. So to the Quarter Final of the plate. Denise Martin beat a four from Canvey Island FC 10-4 whilst Brenda Crowe’s rink also went through by beating a Hadleigh four 9-3. Bob Taylor’s four edged a tight game against a Canvey Island team 8-7. In the Semi Finals Denise Martin’s rink just edged out Brenda Crowe’s four in a close game 6-5. Bob’s rink also went through winning their semi final very convincingly 24-0. They also hit top form in the final of the plate by winning 18-3. Onto the main competitions quarter finals where the winners of this round would represent Essex in the National Finals in April. Rob Wade beat Keef Paxman, Nigel Reed, Dave Woods and Peter Skippen 8-4. The shock of the round was Adrian Atkinsons rink defeating a strong four of Del and Chris Coates, Matt Dillon and Mitchell Young quite convincingly 10-4. In this round brought Tony Ealham’s rink who to be honest all four had been struggling all day and Pauline Childs rinks together with the latter running out deservedly 10-4 winners. In the Semi Finals Rob Wade defeated Adrian Atkinson 9-2 whilst Pauline’s four lost out to a strong rink of Peter Fautley, Steve Killington, Paul Bax and Barry Hedges 3-7. Pauline won the 3rd/4th place play off 12-6 whilst Rob Wade’s rink in a close game lost out 4-9 in the Final to finish as Essex Fours Runners Up. Well done and congratulations to Greg Wade, Emily Poulter, Jonathon East, Rob Wade, Peggy May, Jackie Spooner, Steve Spooner, Adrian Atkinson, Eileen Smith- Allen, Brenda Neil, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child on qualifying for the National Finals in April. Whether full members or associate members to have 11 at the Finals from 19 entries is a great achievement.
HUNNABALL TROPHY SHORT MAT GALA 2018
The above competition was held at PML where 16 teams took part, each playing 4 games over 9 ends. Ten points were awarded for a win, five for a draw plus a point for each end won. Falcon were represented by Andy Philbrick, Jonathon East, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham and congratulations to all four of them as they won all four games to gain Falcon’s first Trophy with a total of 63 points. Springhouse finished in runners up spot on 60 points.
NATIONAL MIXED FOURS QUALIFIERS 2018/19
The above competition took place at Deanes sports where 17 teams took part which were split into four groups with the top two from each group going into the main competition and the remainder going into the plate. A number of Stonyhill members took part and Andy Philbrick, Pat Goodchild, Dave and Mark Chittock were drawn in Group ‘A’. In their first match their opponents from Rochford failed to turn up on time and were therefore awarded a 5-0 victory. Their second match gave them an 8-5 victory and in their last two matches against two fours from Canvey Island FC brought them a 19-1 and a 10-6 victories to top the group with maximum points. Brenda Crowe who was playing with Josie Robinson, Dave Woods and Paul Bax were drawn in Group ‘C’. In their three group games they won 12-3, 13-5 but lost their lost the last one 2-13. This meant in this group three teams finished on 4 points. On shot difference Keef Paxman’s four topped the group whilst the other two had the same shot difference but Brenda’s four managed to finish in second place on a head to head basis and go into the main competition. Eileen Smith-Allen, Pauline Child, Rob Wade and Tony Ealham were drawn in Group ‘D’ which was the group of death. All four were inconsistent and really just couldn’t get going and lost all 3 games 8-10 (After being 8-3 up with two ends to play), 5-14 and 4-10 to the remaining three Stonyhill members of Steve Barry, Steve and Jackie Spooner who were playing with Sandra Tolfrey . These four also lost their two remaining games 2-8 and 2-12 so both teams went into the plate. In the preliminary round of the plate Tony’s four played a Canvey Island four and things turned for the better and won convincingly 11-1. In the Quarter Finals Tonys’s four were really now getting it together and starting to hit top form as they went onto beat Rochford 18-1. Steve Spooner’s four also went through with a 15-4 victory over Jeff Hodkins four. In the semi final there was no looking back now as Tony’s four beating Atte-Bower 10-5. Unfortunately Steve Spooner’s four went out at this stage after a close game against Ann Wilson four 6-7. In the final of the plate in a good match Tony’s four beat Ann Wilson four from Canvey Island FC 8-3. So well done and congratulations to Eileen Smith-Allen, Pauline Child, Rob Wade and Tony Ealham for winning the plate. In the main competition in the Quarter Final Dave Chittock’s four managed to hold on for a 9-6 victory over Shirley Walker’s four. Brenda Crowe’s four had a marvellous 8-2 victory over a strong four of Mo Binstead, Linda Lambert, Stve Killington and Paul Bax. In the Semi Final Dave’s team had a great 10-4 victory over another strong four of Debbie Dillon, Del Coates, Emily Poulter and Chris Coates. Unfortunately Brenda’s four went out at this stage 1-15 to a Springhouse four skipped by Mitchell Young. In the 3/4th position play off match Brenda Crowe’s team lost out 3-11. In a cracking final which was close Dave’s team just lost 4-8. Congratulations and well done to Andy Philbrick, Pat Goodchild, Mark and Dave Chittock for finishing runners up but more importantly going onto represent Essex at the National Championships in March 2019. Congratulations and well done to Brenda Crowe in finishing fourth and lets hope Essex get allocated four places which will mean her team will be a these championships too.

The club singles final was played last night (5/9/18) where the winner was Rob Wade who in a close game managed to hold onto a 10-9 win against Pauline Child. Rob is the first member to win the trophy twice. The club chairman Peter Harris presented the trophies

The Club Pairs Final for 2018 took place last night (29/8/18) where the winners were Dave Chittock and Alan High. The runners up were Steve Barry and Tony Ealham
MARGARET CAIRNS TRIPLES – SUN 5th AUGUST 2018
The annual Margaret Cairns Triple Competition was held at East Hanningfield where 16 teams took part with each team getting 6 games of 8 ends each and the team with the most points were declared the winners. Stonyhill had entered 2 teams. Stonyhill 2 were represented by Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham. In their first game they won 10-4 against Outwood Common 1. Their net game was another convincing win, this time 12-4 against Reed & Co. However they was brought down to earth in their next 2 games as they lost 3-8 and 2-9 to Ramsden Bellhouse 1 and Warren Heath respectively. They got back to winning ways by winning their next 2 matches. 11-7 against Wickford 2 and 12-3 against Canvey Island FC 1. Stonyhill finished in 5th position on 8 points. Stonyhill 1 was represented by Andy Philbrick, Adrian Atkinson and Jonathon East. There was just no stopping them. Convincing winners in their first game 16-3 against Crusoe & Crew. 17-3 against Ramsden Bellhouse 2 in their next. Their next match against Wickford 1 was close but eventually won 9-6. Their next was even closer and just held on for a 6-5 win against three degrees. Their penultimate game was an 11-2 victory over Outwood Common 2. If they won their last game they would be the competitions winners and this they did by defeating East Tilbury 10-6 to be the only unbeaten team and finish on a maximum of 12 points. Well done and Congratulations to Andy, Adrian and Jonathon. This victory means that Stonyhill have now held this trophy for the last 4 years

The above competition was held at Falcon where 39 triples took part. They were split into 8 groups with the top two from each group qualifying into the main knock out with the remainder going into the plate. The competition was held in memory of Sammy Lambert who was the Essex President with all proceeds going to Marie Curie Cancer Trust. There were a large amount of Stonyhill members taking part where Brenda Crowe who was playing with Sandra Stanton and Brenda Crowe were drawn in Group ‘A’. They topped their group with 6 points to qualify for the main competition . In Group ‘B’ were Andy Philbrick, Carol and Bob Taylor and after their 4 group games they unfortunately finished in 5th position with 2 points so went into the plate, Dave and Mark Chittock together with Tony Ealham were drawn in Group ‘D’ and proved to be in fine form to win all their round robin matches to top the group and go into the main knock out. John Finn who was playing with two Wickford members were drawn in Group ‘E’ and finished in runners up spot to also qualify for the main. Colin Addis, Carol Finn and Peggy May were also in this group but only managed to gain 2 points and finish in 4th position to go into the plate. Pat and Alan High with Brenda Neil were in Group’ F’ and unfortunately were in a tough group and went into the plate by finishing in 5th position with one point. Stewart Blackhall, Adrian Atkinson and Peter Harris were also in this group but only managed one point more to finish in 4th position, also going into the plate. Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child were drawn in Group ‘H’ and unfortunately went into the plate by finishing in 4th position without a single point. So into the plate Preliminary round where Eileen,Pat and Pauline’s fortunes turned for the better as they beat a triple from Canvey Island FC convincingly 16-2. Stewart, Adrian and Peter went out at this stage 6-12 to Outwood Common. Colin, Carol and Peggy were the winners in a tight game 7-6 against Pat, Alan and Brenda. Carol, Bob and Andy also went through by beating Ramsden Robins 8-5. In the last 16 of the plate Pauline Child’s triple won a tight game 9-7 against the Harwood family of Matt, Alan and Tim from Kent. Peggy Mays triple went out at this stage 8-12 to Nigel Reed, Dave Sifford and Mary Brown. Carol Taylors three also went through with a convincing win 13-4 against Babs Morokutti, Honey and John Bleach. In the quarter final Pauline’s triple kept going by defeating Mary, Dave and Nigel 10-5. Unfortunately Carol Taylors teams run come to an end as they lost out 3-8 to Dave Woods, Peter Fautley and Steve Killington who were the eventual winners of the plate. In the semi final Eileen, Pat and Pauline lost 2-11 against the eventual plate runners up of Mo Binstead, Sammy’s wife Linda and Barry Hedges. In the Main Competition in the last 16 Brenda Crowe’s triple beat Mat Dillon, Del and Chris Coates 7-5. Tony Ealham’s triple also went through by defeating John Finn, Brian Thornton and Denise Mathews 8-3. In the quarter finals in a very tight game Brenda, Sandra and Beryl went out 4-6 to Josh Woods, Paul Reed and John Pye. Dave, Mark and Tony went through to the semi finals by beating Rob Terry, Phil Ramsden and Tom Coles from Kent 10-4. In the semi final Tony’s trio faced Josh Woods, Paul Reed and John Pye and in a tight game came through as 9-5 winners. So the final was between a trio from Essex and Norfolk with both teams in fine form and an excellent game was played out. However the trio from Essex of Dave Chittock, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham were the eventual winners 7-4 to become the first winners of this trophy. A good day was had by all in what was a well organised tournament but the real winner was Marie Curie Trust where over £1000 was raised.

The annual memorial triples trophy competition was held last night (6/6/18) where 8 teams took part. They were split into 2 groups of 4 with the winners of each group playing in the final. A good evening was had by all but the eventual winners were Stewart Blackhall, Jonathan East and Rob Wade and the runners up were Andy Philbrick, Bob Taylor and John Wade. The above competition was held at Deanes Sports Centre on Sunday 29th April where 24 teams took part. They were split into 4 groups of 5 and one of 4. The top 3 from each group went into the knock out stages. Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child were drawn in Group ‘A’ and topped their group by winning all their games. Beating Dave Woods and John Pye 9-8 on the last end, They then won their next 3 games convincingly by beating Michael and Elizabeth Randal 17-3, Denise Martin and Jenny Babbington 27-2 and finally Jill and Robert Lewis 23-5. Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham were drawn in Group ‘B’ and also topped their group by winning all their games, Beating Shirley and Phil Banner 24-5, Honey and John Bleach 15-2 and to complete their round robin matches Del and Chris Coates 11-10. Colin Addis and Peggy May were drawn in Group ‘C’ and won their first game 13-8 against Josie Robinson and Brenda Crowe. They won their second game against Dave Sifford and Josh Woods 9-7 and continued their winning streak in their next game by defeating Neil Paul and Bob Haney 19-6. In their final group game they went down 7-9 to Doreen Thompson and Chris Brown. However they topped the group and qualified for the knock out stages as did Brenda Crowe and Josie Robinson who finished in third position. In their remaining games they beat Doreen and Christine 12-11, lost 5-12 to Josh and Dave but then beat Neil and Bob 15-8 in their last game. Dave and Mark Chittock were drawn in Group ‘D’ and qualified in 2nd position. They beat Terry and Shannon Mead 12-6, Margaret and Gary Sutton 17-4, Ann Wilson and Gerry Sheekey 15-4 but lost to Mo Binstead and Linda Lambert 5-8. So to the knock out stages and the last 16 round is as follows. Pat and Tony had a tough game against Shannon and Terry Mead and were always chasing being 4 behind with 3 ends to go but managed to claw it back to go into the last end 10 each. Pat and Tony then swapped and with his 2 attempts at running the jack he missed the jack by inches. Pat then caught the jack but it went the wrong way and with the last wood she was just slightly heavy and Shannon and Terry went through deservedly 13-10. Eileen and Pauline were drawn against Ann Wilson and Gerry Sheekey and it was very tight to begin with but they were eventually comfortable 12-6 winners. Peggy and Colin also went out at this stage and never really got going as they lost heavily to Honey and John Bleach 3-14. Josie and Brenda who are 2 thirds of the 3 degrees had a comfortable win against Mo Binstead and Linda Lambert 14-5. Dave and Mark also had a tough draw and in a very nip and tuck game went into the last end 2 down. However the head was blocked off and Mark just couldn’t manage to clear it with his two firing woods and eventually went out to Del and Chris Coates 9-12. In the quarter finals Del and Chris knocked out Eileen and Pauline 12-7 Steve Killington and Paul Bax knocked out Josie and Brenda 11-4. The eventual winners of the competition were Steve and Paul who beat Del and Chris 10-8 in an excellent final

Well done to all the players that qualified to represent Essex in the National Championships held at Tamworth and Melton Mowbray during the first two weekends in April 2018. Stonyhill Kestrels had a good day too by winning their group but going out to the holders of the last 2 years, Island ‘A’ in the quarter final stages. The club was formed in 2010 and started off in division 7. Remembering those that played their part along the way who are unfortunately no longer with us and those that now play at other clubs this dedicated and committed eight last night (4/4/18) became Division One Champions. Sixteen teams took part in the above fours competition where each team had 4 games with 10 points for a win, one for a draw and a point for each end won. Stonyhill was represented by Dave and Mark Chittock with Brenda Crowe and Tony Ealham. They had a mixed day by losing their first 2 games and winning their last 2 to finish on 39 points and in 8th position. The winners were East Tilbury who finished on 65 points with the runners up Ramsden Bellhouse finishing on 61 points.
HERONS AND KESTRELS NEW FIXTURE DATES
Stonyhill Kestrels home fixture against Hadleigh Blue that was postponed on 7th February due to a power failure will now be played on Wednesday 14th March at 19:30. Due to the possibility of all 8 players of the Herons being involved in ICC Semi Final matches on Sunday 4th March their match away to Woodlands scheduled for that evening has now been postponed and are awaiting a new date to be set.

The above competition took place at Deans sports centre where 56 players took part. They were split into 14 groups of 4 where the top 2 from each group going into the knock out stages. There was a number of Stonyhill members taking part in a top class field. Colin Addis, in Group ‘A’ finished in runners up spot. Jackie Spooner, in group ‘B’ unfortunately failed to qualify finishing in 3rd position. Carol Taylor in Group ‘C’ also just failed to qualify to. Greg Wade and Dave Chittock were both drawn in Group ‘E’ Greg finished in runners up spot but Dave just missed out in 3rd spot. Bob Taylor and Tony Ealham were both drawn in Group ‘F’ and both qualified with Bob topping the group and Tony in second spot. Pauline Child was in Group ‘I’ where she topped the group to qualify. Eileen Smith-Allen was in Group ‘J’ and qualified by finishing in second spot. Steve Spooner and Mark Chittock were both drawn in Group ‘K’ and both qualified with Mark topping the group. Brenda Crowe was in Group ‘L’ where unfortunately she failed to qualify. Peggy May was in Group ‘M’ where she just missed out on qualifying. So into the first round of the knock out which was the last 32. Bob Taylor beat Paul Reed 13-8. Steve Spooner went out to Kay Debenham 4-9. Pauline Child won her match against Eileen Smith-Allen 18-2. Mark Chittock won his match too against Denise Allen 17-1. Tony Ealham beat Steve Killington 11-8 but Greg Wade and Colin Addis went out to Stuart Lowe and Maureen Binstead 3-14 and 12-14 respectively. In the last 16 Bob Taylor beat Shirley Walker in a tight game 9-8. Pauline Child also went through by beating Nigel Reed 12-6. Mark Chittock went out in a close game with Emily Poulter 10-11. In another tight game Tony Ealham beat Anthony Fautley 8-7. In the Quarter Finals where the winners of this round would represent Essex in the National Finals at Melton Mowbray in April. Bob Taylor went out to Dominic Reed 5-14. In a close game Pauline Child went out to Paul Bax 6-9. Tony Ealham come from 6-2 down to beat Stuart Lowe 12-6. In the Semi Final there was no stopping Tony Ealham as he beat Dave Wooller 12-2. In the final it was a much closer game than the score line suggests with both players bowling excellently but it was to be Tony’s day as he beat Dominic Reed 12-4. The above competition took place at Deanes sports centre where 24 teams took part. They were split into 6 groups of 4 with the top 2 from each group going into the main competition and the remainder going into the plate. There was a host of Stonyhill members taking part and overall was a good day for them. Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham were drawn in Group ‘B’ where there was no stopping them as they topped the group by winning all 3 group games. Jackie and Steve Spooner with Steve Barry were also in this group where they finished in 3rd position with 2 points from 6. Carol and John Finn with Peggy May were drawn in Group ‘C’ where they also finished in 3rd position on 2 points. Carol and Bob Taylor with Neil Paul were drawn in Group ‘D’ and topped their group on 5 points after being unbeaten in their 3 group games. Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child were also drawn in this group but just couldn’t get going and going down in all 3 group games. Brenda Crowe who was playing with Josie Robinson and Sandra Stanton were in Group ‘E’ and managed to qualify for the main competition by finishing runners up with 2 victories giving them 4 points. In Group ‘F’ were the Wades, Greg, John and Rob who topped their group with a 100 per cent record. So into the plate and this is where Carol and John Finn and Peggy May’s run come to an end in the preliminary round, going out 6-8 to a triple from Canvey Island FC. In the Quarter Final Jackie Spooner’s triple went through. Pauline Child’s triples miserable day was complete as they went out 5-10 to a triple from Outwood Common consisting of Mo Binstead, Joan Kay and Alan Kay. This Outwood Common triple was then beaten by Jackie Spooner’s triple 8-5 in the semi final and went onto meet the Poulter family of Sylvia, David and Emily in the final. Unfortunately in a very close and tight game they went down on the last end by losing 8-9. In the main completion quarter finals where the winners of this round would qualify for the national finals there were still 9 Stonyhill members in with a shout. Unfortunately Brenda Crowe’s triple came up against a strong 3 of Jake Attrill, Steve Killington and Anthony Fautley and never really got into the match and were on the wrong end of a final score of 2-15. Tony Ealham’s triple were drawn against in form Shirley and Phil Banner with Tony Slater and after a tight start eventually pulled away and winning 13-7. Carol Taylor’s triple were involved in a tight struggle against Denise Bowley, Alan Berrecloth and John Pavitt from Rochford but held on to win 8-5. The Wade family were up against Nigel and Dom Reed with Dave Sifford and never really recovered from a bad start and eventually went out 5-11. In the semi final Tony and Anthony were up against each other and were 2 down going into the last end. Holding 2 with Tony having last wood drew in for 3 to win a tight game 9-8. Carol against Dominic in the other semi final was always behind and eventually went out 4-11. Carol and Anthony in the 3rd/4th place play off went down to the last wood but unfortunately lost by one shot to finish in 4th place. In the final one bad end, conceding 5 cost Tony’s triple who eventually lost 5-11. Well done and congratulations to Dave Chittock, Mark Chittock, Tony Ealham, Carol Taylor and Bob Taylor on qualifying to represent Essex at the National Finals at Melton Mowbray in April 2018
TONY PHILBRICK – RIP
Our thoughts and condolences are with Andy Philbrick at this very sad time after the recent loss of her husband. If you would like to pay your respects Andy has said you are more than welcome to attend the funeral. The funeral details are Tuesday 19th December at 2pm at Herongate Wood Cemetery. The website for this is Green-Burial.co.uk. The directions are as follows. Go past Stonyhill which is on your right. Then take the 2nd right into Billericay Road, Drive a couple of miles passing the pub called the ‘Old Dog’ on your right and the cemetery comes up on your right. The wake which everyone is invited to will take place at the ‘Herongate Suite’, in the Halfway House with refreshments and buffet until 5pm.

The above competition took place at Deanes Sports Centre where 32 teams took part. They were split into 8 groups of 4 with the top 2 from each group going into the main competition and the remainder going into the plate. As usual there was a large number of entries from Stonyhill members. Brenda Crowe who was playing with Josie Robinson were drawn in Group ‘A’ where unfortunately they lost all 3 group games so went into the plate. Carol and Bob Taylor were drawn in Group ‘B’ where they gained 2 points which was not enough to stop them from going into the plate. Andy Philbrick and Jonathan East were drawn in Group ‘D’ as was Colin Addis and Peggy May. Peggy and Colin topped the group on shot difference with 4 points so went into the main competition. Andy and Jonathan could only manage one win, so with only 2 points they went into the plate. More on this pair later. Carol and John Finn as well as Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child were drawn in Group ‘E’. This was a very tight group as both teams finished on 4 points as well as Kay and Peter Debenham. So it was all down to shot difference to decide who went into what competition. Peter and Kay only had plus 7 so went into the plate. However shot difference could not separate John and Pauline’s pairing to see who topped the group or to finish runners up as they both had plus 17. So it was shots for that would decide and with Eileen/Pauline on 37 shots for and Carol/John on 36 shots for it was Pauline who finished top and John had to settle for second spot but both qualified into the main. Group F consisted of 3 Stonyhill pairings. Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham topped the group with 3 wins from 3 totalling 6 points. Dave Chittock and Rob Wade just scraped into runners up spot on shot difference with only 2 points to pip Jackie and Steve Spooner. So to the knock out stages of the plate. At this point Jonathan had to withdraw from the days bowling because his pussy was taken ill and was very sore and had kept him up all night. Peter Faultley stepped in to replace him to partner Andy and in the first round they beat Denise and Robin Martin from Canvey Island FC 11-3. Steve and Jackie Spooner defeated Shirley and Phil Banner 11-7. Carol and Bob Taylor beat Jenny Babbington and JeffHodgkins 14-2. Brenda Crowe with Josie also went through by beating Ann Wilson and Gerry Sheekey 13-7. So in the quarter finals Jackie and Steve went out, narrowly losing 7-9 to eventual plate winners Del and Chris Coates. Carol and Bob marched into the semi finals as they crushed Josh Woods and Ashley Harvey 13-6. Andy went through too by defeating Brenda 15-6. In the semi finals Bob and Carol Taylor just lost out to Andy Philbrick and Peter Fautley who just lost out in a close final 8-10. In the main competition first round Dave Chittock and Rob Wade went out, losing heavily to Paul Reed and Emily Poulter 1-10. In a close game Colin Addis and Peggy May just managed to hold on to beat Carol and John Finn 13-9. Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child also just managed to hold on in another close affair to win 8-7 against Dave Wooler and Alan Jones. Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham also moved forward into the quarter finals by destroying Shannon and Terry Mead 15-4. So into the quarter finals where the winners of this round would represent Essex in the National Finals at Melton Mowbray in April 2018. Three of these quarter finals could not have been more closer. Unfortunately Colin and Peggy went out, losing to Tony Hayes and Paul Bax 4-10. Pat and Tony came across a strong pair of Barry Hedges and Jake Attrill and going into the last end it was 5 apiece. Unfortunately Barry got the one he needed on the last end to win 6-5. Eileen and Pauline also faced a strong pair in Steve Killington and Anthony Fautley. This was even closer than the previous match described as it finished 7-7 and an extra end had to be played. With Anthony having last wood Pauline’s holding wood was very vulnerable but the pressure was to much as Anthony just pushed his wood wide and missed the target. In the semi finals unfortunately Eileen and Pauline went out to eventual winners of the competition Jake and Barry 8-12. They eventually finished in 3rd place as they won the 3rd/4th place play off against Paul Reed and Emily Poulter. NATIONAL OVER 55’S PAIRS QUALIFIERS-SAT 25TH NOV 2018
The first ever over 55’s pairs national qualifiers took place at Deanes Sports Centre where 20 teams took part. They were split into 4 groups of 5 with the top 2 from each group going into the main competition and the remainder going into the plate. Unfortunately overall it was a disappointing day for the Stonyhill members taking part. Pat Goodchild/Tony Ealham, Brenda Crowe/Sandra Stanton, Carol Taylor/Bob Taylor, Carol Finn/John Finn, Eileen Smith-Allen/Pauline Child all failed to qalify for the main knock out. The only ones to progress into the main competition were Jackie Spooner/Steve Spooner and Colin Addis/Peggy May who finished top of their respective groups with a 100 per cent record gaining 8 points. Unfortunately their run came to an end in the Quarter Finals as they both lost. Jackie and Steve lost out to Mike Smith and Tony Ryall who eventually finished up as runners up. Colin and Peggy were defeated by Kay and Peter Debenham. The eventual winners of the competition were John Pye and Paul Reed. In the plate Carol and Bob Taylor went out in the preliminary round. The next stage was the quarter finals and this is where Eileen and Pauline’s day come to an end as did Carol and John Finns. Brenda with Sandra and Pat with Tony progressed into the next round. In the semi finals Brenda Crowe and Sandra Stanton were narrowly beaten but Pat and Tony managed to hold on to win. In the final Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham beat Val Hughes and Ann Gilman 14-5.
NATIONAL FOURS QUALIFIERS-SUN 12TH NOVEMBER 2018
The above competition took place at Deanes Sports Centre where 16 teams took part. They were split up into four groups of four with the top two from each group qualifying for the main knock out and the bottom two going into the plate. There were a number of Stonyhill members taking part. Eileen Smith-Allen, Brenda Neil, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child were drawn in group ‘A’ which was the group of death. In their first game they were 1-7 down against Keef Paxman, Josh Woods, Paul Bax and Craig Burgess but the comeback kings didn’t give up and came back fighting, only just to lose out 7-8. Their second game was no easier against Nigel Reed, Steve Killington, Anthony Fautley and Dom Reed losing 4-14. Their final game was close and eventually finished 5-5 against Del and Chris Coates, Mat Dillon and Mitchell Young. With a total of 1 point they finished in 3rd place and thus went into the plate. Colin Addis and Peggy May were playing with Shannon and Terry Mead and were drawn in Group ‘B’. Carol and Bob Taylor with Jackie and Steve Spooner were also drawn in this group and faced each other in the opening game. Bob Taylor’s quartet eventually won 8-5 in a very close game. Bob won his second game too against a four from Canvey Island Football Club convincingly 13-3. Peggy May’s rink also won their second game against Tony Ryall’s four from Hadleigh 8-4. Unfortunately Bob just lost out in a close last game 4-6 whilst Peggy’s four won easily 19-2. With 3 teams finishing on 4 points from this group it was down to shot difference. Peggy’s four topped the group with a plus 18 difference and Bob’s rink finished in second place with plus 11 so both teams qualified for the main knock out. Brenda Crowe was playing with Beryl Gardner, Sandra Stanton and Barbara Cornish and were in group ‘C’. Having been unbeaten in their three group games, by winning 15-7, 12-6 and drawing 8-8 they topped their group with a total of 5 points to also qualify for the main competition. Andy Philbrick, Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham were drawn in Group ‘D’ In their first game against Babs Morokutti, Shirley Banner, John Pye and Phil Banner they didn’t really get going and lost heavily 3-10. They got it together in their second game by defeating Alan and Joan Kay, Mo Binstead and Linda Lambert 8-5. Their last game bought them a 15-5 victory against Josie Robinson, Kay Debenham, Emily Poulter and Peter Debenham to leave them on 4 points, finishing in second place on shot difference to Phil Banners team who also finished with 4 points to top the group and both qualifying into the main. In the plate quarter finals Pauline Child’s quartet had a convincing 13-4 win against a four from Canvey Island FC. Their semi final matched them against Peter Debenham’s rink and in a close game they eventually ran out 10-7 winners. In the Final of the plate they again met Mitchell Young’s four but lost out 3-9. So onto the quarter finals of the main competition where the winners of this round would go onto to represent Essex in the National finals at Melton Mowbray in April 2018. Bob Taylor’s four just lost out to Dominic Reed’s rink. Brenda Crowe faced Tony Ealham where it was close to begin with but Tony eventually went through winning 12-5. Peggy May’s four had a tight battle against a strong Craig Burgess rink and eventually went through 10-9. Onto the semi finals:- Peggy May lost out to Phil Banner 4-11. In the other semi Tony Ealham’s rink face Dominic Reed’s four and what a match this was. It went all the way as it was 7-7 going into the last end and with the last wood of the match Tony’s four ran out 8-7 winners. In the 3rd/4th place play off Peggy went down 4-11 whilst in the Final which was very tight and close Tony’s rink had to settle for runners up as they went down narrowly 4-6. The above competition took place at Deanes Sports Centre where 15 teams took part. There were 3 groups of 5 with the top 2 from each group together with the 2 best 3rd places qualifying for the knock out stages. As usual there was a large amount of Stonyhill members taking part. As I don’t have all the results available I will just do a quick summary of events. Eileen Smith-Allen, Rob Wade, Pauline Child and Tony Ealham were drawn in group C and after narrowly losing their first game won their remaining games to finish in runners up spot and move forward to the knock out. Andy Philbrick, Pat Goodchild, Dave and Mark Chittock also finished up in runners up spot in group A by also winning 3 of their 4 group games. Brenda Crowe who was playing with Josie Robinson, Dave Woods and Paul Bax also qualified for the knock out stages as they finished up in runners up spot in group B. So it was all to pay for in the quarter finals as the winners of this round would all qualify to represent Essex in the National Finals in April 2018. Unfortunately Tony and Mark’s rinks got drawn against each other with Tony’s four going on to win 11-6. Brenda Crowes team beat a strong Springhouse team to go into the semi finals. In the semi finals Tony’s rink got no luck whatsoever and eventually went down 4-14 to Mo Binstead, Linda Lambert, Steve Killington and Anthony Fautley who eventually finished up as runners up of the competition. Brenda Crowes team put up a tremendous fight against last years winners of Shirley Banner, Sheila Booker, Phil Banner and Roger Dover but just lost out 4-6. The Island quartet went on to retain their trophy. In the 3rd/4th place play off Tony team beat Brenda Crowe’ four 15-4.

The above competition was held at PML where 16 teams took part. Each team played 4 games of 9 ends with 10 points for a win, 5 for a draw plus a point for each end won. There were several Stonyhill members on show but Stonyhill was represented by Andy Philbrick, Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham and in their first game they lost to the FOE four of Carol and John Finn, Colin Addis and Peggy May 6-9. Their next two games brought them convincing victories 18-5 and 11-6 against Canvey Island and Hatfield Peverel respectively. Hatfield Peverel which included Steve and Jackie Spooner also lost their opening game against Outwood Common by the same score line but won their second game convincingly 14-2 against Courage. FOE second game against Heron Park was very close but eventually lost out 4-8. They also lost their third game against Outwood Common which was again very close 4-7. 3G who was made up of John and Joan Wade with Carol and Bob Taylor unfortunately they lost their opening three games. The scores being 5-16, 3-8, 5-14 against Ramsden Bellhouse, Willow Park and East Tilbury respectively. Willow Park including Pat and Alan High other 2 games from their opening 3 brought them defeats losing to Springhouse disastrously 2-18 and 4-9 to three degrees. East Tilbury who was made up of Eileen Smith-Allen, George Christy, Lyn Munns and Pauline Child also beat Hamptons convincingly 19-4 and Springhouse 10-6. Three Degrees made up of Josie Robinson, Adrian Atkinson, Peter Harris and Brenda Crowe beat Island 9-6 but lost their second game to Ramsden 5-8. As only 4 mats were available the matches were split into two sessions. So with each team having played 3 matches there were only 3 teams unbeaten which were Ramsden, Outwood Common and East Tilbury. Hatfield Peverel last game brought them a 6-4 victory against Canvey Island whilst FOE also won 13-7 against South Benfleet. Stonyhill ended Outwood Commons unbeaten run by beating them 10-5. This brought Stonyhill back into the reckoning but relied on results else where. If East Tilbury and Ramsden both lost their last matches then Stonyhill would be the winners but if only one of them lost then they would be runners up. Willow Park had a fine victory 8-2 against Ramsden and the impossible looked on. Three Degrees won their last game 9-7 against Springhouse. 3G got their first victory of the day by beating Hamptons 8-2. In a close game East Tilbury eventually beat Island 8-2 to take the title. Congratulations to the East Tilbury quartet for winning the competition and also to the Stonyhill four who finished up in runners up spot. STONYHILL TAKE FIRST AND SECOND PLACE
A charity triples event was held at East Hanningfield on Sunday 1st October 2017 in aid of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. Several Stonyhill members took part and Stonyhill 1 was represented by Greg Wade, Dave and Mark Chittock whilst Stonyhill 2 was made up of Andy Philbrick, Jonathon East and Tony Ealham. Warren was represented by Carol and John Finn with Colin Addis. 3G included Joan and John Wade whilst Brenda Crowe played for 3 degrees. East Tilbury contingent of Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child completed the list of Stonyhill members. Each team had 6 games of 8 ends with 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw and the team with the most points at the end of the day were crowned the winners. Stonyhill 1 got off to a fine win against Canvey Island FC 9-5 as did Stonyhill 2 against another triple from Canvey Island FC 18-3. Warren beat Rochford 13-6 as did East Tilbury 12-6 against Outwood Common. 3 degrees beat 3G quite convincingly 13-3. In the second round of games Stonyhill 1 beat Ramsden 8-4, Stonyhill 2 beat Outwood Common 16-3. East tilbury beat CIFC 10-5. 3degrees beat Rochford 6-4 whilst Warren beat 3G 5-4 in a close game. Warren also won their next game which was also very close, beating Stonyhill 2 7-5. Stonyhill 1 and East Tilbury continued their winning streak beating Willow Park 10-1 and 3 degrees 5-4 respectively. 3G lost to Outwood Common 9-2. Stonyhill 1 continued their fine form by then beating Ramsden 10-3. 3G beat CIFC 12-4. East Tilbury beat Warren 8-3 whilst Stonyhill 2 beat 3 Degrees 12-4. In the penultimate round of matches it was only Stonyhill 1 and East Tilbury that were unbeaten. Stonyhill 1 looked unbeatable as they beat Island 12-5. Unfortunately East Tilbury lost a close game 7-5 to 3G which let Stonyhill 2 back in for runners up spot as they beat Rochford 12-2. 3 Degrees beat Outwood Common 11-4 as did Warren, beating CIFC 10-3. Stonyhill 1 managed to win their last game against Rochford 9-3 to be undefeated all day and with a total of 12 points were the winners. Stonyhill 2 beat 3G 11-4 whilst East Tilbury beat Rochford 15-2. This meant east tilbury and Stonyhill 2 both finished on 10 points but with a better shot difference of 4 shots Stonyhill 2 finished in runners up spot whilst East Tilbury had to settle for third position. 3 Degrees won their last game against CIFC 11-3 giving them a total of 8 points. Warren won against Outwood Common 11-5 also giving them a total of 10 points but was just pushed into fourth place on shot difference. 3G finished on 4 points. A good day was had by all with in excess of £700 being raised for charity. Well done and congratualtions to all those that filled the top four places

JOHN MAY FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
The funeral of John May will be at Bentley Crematorium, Ongar Road, CM15 9RZ on Wednesday 30th August at 3pm. The wake will be at Ashwells Sports and Country Club, Bentley, Brentwood, CM15 9SE. Everyone is welcome. You can have the choice of sending flowers or making a donation. There will be a donation box inside the crematorium for ‘Parkinsons’. There will be no bowls at Falcon on this night.

It is with great sadness that John May passed away peacefully this afternoon (13/8/17) after suffering a long illness. He loved his bowls and will be sorely missed. Condolences to Peggy and her family at this sad time.
ISLAND OPEN – SATURDAY 12TH AUGUST 2017
The above competition was held at Island where 18 teams took part, which were split up into 3 groups of 6 with the winner of each group going through to the semi final with the best runner up. There was 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw plus a point for each end won. There were quite a few stonyhill members taking part. Stonyhill 1 was represented by Andy Philbrick, Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham. In their first game they beat Outwood Common 1 by 7 -2. Their second game against Ramsden 2 as a bit one sided as they run out 13-0 winners. They won their next game against Heron Park comfortably 13-2. Their penultimate game against Outwood Common 2 gave them an 8-1 victory. Their last game against Ramsden 1 was a very tight affair and with 2 ends to go were 5-1 down but then scored a 4 to go into the last all square at 5 apiece. Mark then went number 1 and promptly took the jack into the ditch and it was game over winning 6-5. This gave them 10 points plus24 points for each end won giving them a total of 34 to win the group and qualify into the semi finals. Stonyhill 2 was represented by Carol and John Finn together with Peter Harris and Colin Addis. In their first game they lost to 3G who was represented by the Wade family of Greg, Joan, John and Rob 11-4. They had a 10-2 victory in the next against St. Andrews. Their next game against Hatfield Peveril was very close but eventually held on to win 9-8. An 8-5 win in their next game against Willow Park ‘C’. In their last game in another tight affair they managed to win 7-6 against Willow Park ‘A’ to give them a total of 8 points and with ends won had a total of 27 to finish runners up in their group which was enough to qualify for the semi final. 3G won all of their remaining games to top the group on 32 points to also qualify. The 4th place for the semi final went to East Tilbury who was made up of Eileen Smith-Allen, George Christy, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child and topped their group with a total of 29 points. One of the Semi Finals was an all Stonyhill affair which was very tight. The match see sawed one way and then the other but Stonyhill eventually ran out 6-4 winners. The other one between East Tilbury and 3G was a bit one sided as East Tilbury ran out 8-1 winners. The final was very close and with 2 ends to go it could have been any bodies but with a 5 Stonyhill 1 went into the last end 10-5 up. East Tilbury piled on the pressure in the last end to get it back but could only manage a 3 so Stonyhill were the eventual winners for the 3rd time in 4 years 10-8. Congratulations and well done to all 16 semi finalists who were all Stonyhill members. A big thank you must go to the Island members for working really hard to put on an excellent day, really superb.

The above competition was held at East Hanningfield where the were 16 teams each playing 6 games and several Stonyhill members took part. Stonyhill was represented by Andy Philbrick, Dave Chittock and Tony Ealham and they got off to a flier beating East Hanningfield 18-2. In their second game they beat Canvey Island FC (2) 16-3. Their third game was against 3 Degrees which was closer than the 11-4 winning score line suggests. Their fourth game against Outwood Common and continued their winning streak with a 10-5 victory. They were comfortable winners in their penultimate game against Canvey Island FC (1) 18-2. Their last game against Willow Park which contained recent new Stonyhill members Carol and Bob Taylor with June Hubert was close to begin with but eventually ran out 14-3 winners. With a 100 per cent record giving them 12 points they won the competition for the third year running. East Tilbury who was represented by Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child finished in runners up spot on 10 points only just losing their final game against Hatfield Peveril (1) 10-2. They won their other five games 13-5, 8-6, 9-2, 6-5 and 13-2 against Warren Heath, Hatfield Peveril (2), Rochford, St.Andrews and Springhouse respectively. The above competition was held at Falcon where 24 teams took part. There were 6 groups of 4 played on a round robin basis with the top 2 from each group together with the 4 best 3rd place qualifying for the knock out stages. The rest went into a plate competition. The event is sponsored by Barry Dillon of Warman holidays. There was a number of Stonyhill members taking part. Alan and Pat High were drawn in group ‘B’ and in their opening game lost to Paul and Christine Reed 9-12. Also in this group were Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child and hammered their opponents Linda Lambert and Joan Kay in their first game 21-2. Eileen and Pauline then beat Pat and Alan in the second game 14-3. Pat and Alan then beat Linda and Joan 8-6 to give them 2 points and this was enough to qualify as best 4th best l3rd place. Eileen and Pauline topped the group with 6 points after completing their group matches with a 10-9 win against Christine and Paul. The defending champions Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham got off to a 9-6 win against Audrey and Peter Moore. They then lost their next game against John Douthwaite and Jackie Spooner from Hatfield 8-10. They then won their last game 16-7 against Jean and Ron Jarvis also from Hatfield to give them 4 points and qualify finishing in runners up spot. Peggy May was paired with John Pye in group ‘D’ and finished top of the group by winning all 3 games 10-5 against Carol and Bob Taylor, 14-5 against Shirley and Phil Banner and 10-8 against Kay and Peter Debenham. Brenda Neil was playing with Colin Addis in group ‘E’. Their opening game was a 13-6 victory Eileen and John Bellett. They won their second game 11-6 against Sheila and Roger Booker. However they came crashing down to earth in their last game losing to Del and Chris Coates 2-18 but still qualified with 4 points in runners up spot. Dave and Mark Chittock were in group ‘F’ and won their opening game 15-7 against Carol and John Finn. However they lost their next 2 games 4-15 to Steve Barry and Steve Spooner from Hatfield 4-15 and then to Alan Kay and Mo Binstead 7-13. With a total of 2 points they just managed to qualify as 3rd best 3rd place. Carol and John lost against Mo and Alan 5-8 and also 4-15 to the two Steve’s. So onto the knock out stages and in the plate unfortunately Carol and John Finn just lost out to Carol and Bob Taylor who went on to win the plate 7-8 in the quarter final. In the main competition in the last 16 Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham dispatched Del and Chris Coates 13-8. Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child beat Sheila and Roger Booker 11-5. Dave and Mark Chittock won convincingly 16-3 against John Douthwaite and Jackie Spooner. Brenda Neil and Colin Addis went out 5-10 to Christine and Paul Reed. Onto the semi finals Pat and Tony came across the winners of this competition 2 years ago Mo and Alan and after 11 ends it finished in a draw 7 all so an extra end had to be played. Unfortunately this went Mo and Alan’s way and so Pat and Tony went out 7-8. Dave and Mark won the other semi final convincingly against Peggy and John. So in the final which see sawed each way but Mo and Alan pulled away with 2 ends to go and were eventual winners 11-7. The above competition was held at East Hanningfield in memory of Steve’s mum. 16 teams took part and each team had 6 matches over 7 ends and with 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw the team with the most ponts over the day were the winners. There were a number of Stonyhill members taking part representing various teams. Stonyhill 1 was represented by Andy Philbrick, Jonathan East, Dave and Mark Chittock and in their first game they got off to a flying start beating Rochford 14-0. In their second game they got brought down to earth losing 1-10 to Outwood Common. They soon rectified this by beating East Tilbury who was represented by Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild, Tony Ealham and Pauline Child by the same score line. They then lost to 3G who was made up of the Wades – Greg, Joan, John and Rob 5-7. They then drew 6-6 with 3 Degrees after changing their team order around with Andy going skip and did great keeping 3 fit men under control. In their last game against Ramsden they won 9-2 which gave them a total of 7 points and finishing in 5th place. Stonyhill 2 were represented by Carol and John Finn together with Carol and Jack Mcmenamin. Unfortunately they lost all 6 matches but did very well as all but 2 of their matches were very close. In their opener they lost to Outwood Common 2-9. Then just losing out to Rochford 6-3. They then lost to 3G 7-2. After lunch they lost heavily to East Tilbury 1-12 but had a closer game against Ramsden just losing out 4-7. In their last game they just lost out to 3 Degrees 5-8. East Tilbury’s remaining 4 matches brought them mixed fortunes as they beat 3 Degrees 11-0, Then losing to Ramsden in a close game 5-7. They then beat Rochford 10-2 and completed the day with a resounding 16-2 win against Outwood Common. This gave them a total of 8 points and finished in fouth position. 3G opening game was a 6-3 victory over Ramsden followed up by a 11-4 win against 3 Degrees. They lost their only game against Outwood Common 4-8. In their final game they beat Rochford 8-5. This gave them 10 points and finished in 3rd place but just losing out on the runners up spot to St. Andrews on shot difference. The eventual winners were Springhouse. A good days bowling was had by all in a well organised day

Magpies magnificent 38-15 win in their last league game at home to South Woodham Ferrers last night (12/4/17) gave them 5 points to clinch top spot from Canvey Gold in division four. The finals day of the above competition was held on Sunday 2nd April at Island. Sixteen teams took part of which all three Stonyhill teams were involved which is a great achievement for the club. There were 4 groups of 4 played on a round robin basis with the top two qualifying for the knock out stages. Unfortunately the Magpies who were represented by Carolyn Mcmenamin, Peter Harris, Jack Mcmenamin and John Finn lost all three group games and therefore did not qualify. Their opening game was against the Kestrels and just lost out 6-7. Their two remaining games were very close but lost 3-6 and 3-4 to Wickford ‘B’ and Hadleigh Silver respectively. The Kestrels who were represented by Andy Philbrick, Carol Finn, Peggy May and Shirley Walker two remaining games brought them mixed fortunes. Beating Hadleigh Silver 7-1 but losing to Wickford ‘A’ 4-6. This put them in runners up spot and qualified for the quarter finals where they unfortunately went out to a strong Springhouse team 2-13. The Herons opening match was very close but just held on to beat Whitehall Wasps 7-6. They then beat Willow Whites 8-2. Their last game did not matter as they had already qualified but it was a heavy defeat by Springhouse 1-9. In the quarter finals after a tight start they eventually ran away beating Wickford ‘B’ 11-5. The semi final was against old rivals East Tilbury ( Eileen Smith-Allen, John Bleach, Pat Goodchild, Pauline Child) and was vey tight indeed. However on the seventh end of a nine end match Herons scored a massive 5 which put them into the driving seat and were eventual 12-6 winners. The final was against Island ‘A’ who were very strong and the Herons got off to a bad start going 5-0 down after 2 ends. They started to pull it back and after 7 ends were only 4-7 down. Island then scored a 5 to leave them 12-4 up going into the last end. A hot shot was required to take the match to an extra end but despite Johnathan knocking the jack off twice it was not to be as Island score a 1 which made them 13-4 winners. Well done to everyone and congratulations to Greg Wade, Bart Clements, Johnathan East and Rob Wade for finishing runners up.
HERONS FINISH IN RUNNERS UP POSITION
Stonyhill Herons were guaranteed runners up spot in their first season in Division One after a nail biting last game away to Woodlands Ash. Needing one point they managed to get 2 points after the match was shared with one mat each, winning on one 11-10 and just losing on the other 12-13 after going into the last end 12 each. Well done and congratulations to Greg Wade, Dave Chittock, Johnathon East, Rob Wade, Heather Clements, Bart Clements, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Stonyhill Indoor Bowls Club will be closing as from 1st May. A new venue has been arranged for Stonyhill Short Mat Bowls Club which will be at Falcon Indoor Bowls Club, Channels Drive, Broomfield, Chelmsford, CM3 3FB. The first Wednesday at this new venue will be on Wednesday 10th May at 19:30. Please do not arrive before 19:00hrs. The above competition was held at East Hanningfield where 16 teams took part. Each team played 6 matches over 7 ends with the winners being the team with the most points at the end of the day. Stonyhill 1 was represented by Andy Philbrick, Dave Chittock, Jonathan East and Mark Chittock. In their first game against Rochford they won 7-2. They were run away 12-1 winners in their next game against Island 1. Their next game against East Tilbury represented by Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild, Tony Ealham and Pauline Child was a very tight affair. They managed to score a 5 on the penultimate end and eventually won 9-5. The next game was an 16-0 whitewash against Weeley. They won their 5th game against Ramsden 2 by 9-4. They only had to win their last game against East Hanningfield who were also in contention to be outright winners with a 100 per cent record of 12 points. In a close game they did just that by just holding on to win 6-4. Stonyhill 2 who were represented by Colin Addis, John Finn, Peggy May and John Pye opened up their account by winning a close game against Ramsden 1 by 8-6. They were convincing 10-3 winners in their next match against Outwood Common. Their next match against Hatfield was very tight but just managed to hold on to win 8-7. In their next match they were run away winners against Burham from Kent by a 15-2 score line. Their next match against 3 Degrees was a very one sided affair as they ran out 10-0 winners. Their last match against another Outwood Common team was very close but just lost out 3-5. However with a total of 10 points they finished up in runners up spot. East Tilbury won their first game against Ramsden 2 convincingly 15-0. However they were on the receiving end of a 0-9 score line against East Hanningfield in a match where the score really did not reflect on a very tight match with all 7 ends could have gone either way. After lunch they got back to winning ways by beating Hatfield 15-0. Against Rochford they won with another white wash 15-0. A win in their last match against Island 1 by 12-2 gave them 8 points, level with 3 other teams. However with a shot difference of plus 42 they were placed in third position. Well done and congratulations to all 12 members.
REASON FOR LATE CANCELLATION OF KESTRES LEAGUE GAME
The league match away to Wickford that was due to be played this afternoon ( 22/1/17) was cancelled in the morning. Even though the league rules state that no game can be cancelled within 3 days of the match I felt there was sufficient reason to accept Wickford’s request on the morning of the game to postpone the match. The reason being that Pat Stoneham was already ruled out with a broken leg leaving them a bear 8 to play. However at 7am a couple who were due to play, one of their mothers was taken ill and were awaiting for medical treatment and an ambulance to arrive to rush her into hospital. This left them with 6 players. I apologise for any inconvenience caused but thought it was right to cancel the game and not claim the points. The match has now been pencilled in for Sunday 23rd April at 14:30 but will be confirmed by Wickford in about a weeks time.

The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 39 teams took part. They were split into 8 groups with the top 2 from each group qualifying for the knock out stages. All games were over 10 ends and there was once again a large number of Stonyhill members taking part. Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham were drawn in Group ‘B’ and were in total control in their first game, beating Val Hughes and Ann Gilman from Hadleigh 22-1. In their second game against Carol and Bob Taylor from Willow Park they ran out 12-5 winners. Their third game was against Carol and Tom Dines from Ramsden and again were winners this time by 11-4. Their last game against Paul Bax and Matt Sifford was easier than expected as they won comfortably 12-5. This gave them a maximum 8 points to top the group and qulify for the knock out stages. Pat and Alan High were drawn in Group ‘C’ and in their opening game against Paul Reed and Peter Moore they won 10-6. Their next game was a very close affair but eventually just lost out to Dave Wooller and Alan Jones 7-9. Their next game was another defeat, losing to Mo Binstead and Linda Lambert 5-10. Their last game brought them back to winning ways 11-5 against Keith and Christine Wooderson from Hadleigh. This gave them 4 points but just missed out on qualifying by finishing in 3rd position. Moira Baker who was playing with Peter Williams were drawn in Group ‘E’ as was Eileen Smith-Allen, Pauline Child and Andy Philbrick who was playing with Tony Hayes. Moira and Peter lost 5-16 to Anthony Fautley and Steve Killington, 7-9 to Eileen and Pauline, 9-12 to Linda and Keith Willingham. However they won their second game against Andy and Tony 10-6. Eileen and Pauline were convincing winners in their first game against Linda and Keith 15-4. In their 3rd game they unfortunately lost heavily to Anthony and Steve 4-16. Their last game against Andy and Tony was very close but they eventually won 11-6. Andy and Tony managed to get 2 points from their remaining games by beating Linda and Keith 10-5 but lost to Anthony and Steve 4-10. Steve and Anthony topped the group on 8 points with Eileen and Pauline qualifying in second place on 6 points. Group ‘F’ contained 6 Stonyhill members. Dave and Mark Chittock ended up topping the group on 8 points by beating Tony Ryall and John White 18-2, Josie Robinson and Brenda Crowe 8-5, Greg and Rob Wade 14-2 and finally Peggy May and Colin Addis 11-9. Greg and Rob Wade also qualified in runners up spot by winning all their remaining games, winning 13-7 against Tony and John, 18-5 against Josie and Brenda and 13-7 against Colin and Peggy. Colin and Peggy won their opening game against Brenda and Josie 8-5 but lost their remaining one 7-11 against John and Tony from Hadleigh. Carol and John Finn were drawn in Group ‘G’. They found this a very tough group, losing all 4 matches all be it being close scores. 6-10 against Kay and Peter Debenham, 6-10 against Doreen Thompson and Christine Brown, 6-9 against Michael Spackman and John Pavitt and finally 6-12 to Joan and Alan Kay. Finally John Pye who was playing with Keef Paxman was drawn in Group ‘H’ which was a group of 4. Their opening game against Shirley and Phil Banner was a 9-9 draw. They lost their next match 6-8 against Rose Hambleton and Bob Quarterman. They won their last match convincingly 18-4 against Sylvia and Emily Poulter which gave them the shot difference to qualify in runners up spot. In the first round of the knock out which was the last 16 John Pye and Keef Paxman lost to Barry Hedges and Peter Fautley quite heavily 1-18. Pat Goodchild an Tony Ealham beat Doreen Thompson and Christine Brown convincingly 15-1 with 3 ends to spare. Greg and Rob Wade had a convincing win too, beating Mo Binstead and Linda Lambert 13-0. Pauline Child and Eillen Smith-Allen had a very close game against Babs Morokutti and Pauline Lowe but were eventual winners 10-8. Dave and Mark Chittock game up against Dave Wooller and Alan Jones and after a close game just lost out 6-9. The next round were the quarter finals and with Essex being allocated 4 places the winners of this round would be going to the Nationals at Melton Mowbray in April. Pat and Tony came up against Peter Fautley and Barry Hedges and with five ends gone were leading 6-1 and a shock result looked on. However going into the last end they were 8-10 down by dropping a 3.4.2 and winning the other end with a 2. Unfortunately they dropped a one on the last end so went out 8-11. Greg and Rob Wade were leading all the way in their match against Eileen and Pauline. However on the last end Eileen and Pauline scored enough to scrape through 9-8. So to the Semi Finals. Eileen and Pauline were drawn against Peter and Barry and in a very close and tight game eventually went out 5-8. Peter and Barry were the eventual winners of the competition beating Shirley and Phil Banner in the Final. Eileen and Pauline unfortunately lost their 3rd/4th place play off to Steve Killington and Anthony Faultley. The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 15 teams took part. There were 3 groups of 5 with the top 2 from each group together with the 2 best 3rd places qualifying for the knock out stages. The remaining teams would go into a plate competition. All games were over 8 ends. There was a large number of Stonyhill members taking part. The group of death was Group A in which Colin Addis, Peggy May, Pat and Alan High were drawn. In their first game they came up against a Tony Ryall four from Hadleigh but in a close game just lost out 6-10. In their next game they came up against last years winners, a Mitchell Young four from Springhouse and lost heavily 2-12. Their next game was not easier as they lost to a strong four from East Hanningfield (Steve Killington, Paul Bax, Linda Lambert, Mo Binstead) 7-14. Their last game was against another Springhouse four of Babs Morokutti, Pauline Lowe, Del and Chris Coates. In a tight game Alan Highs four pulled off a remarkable victory 10-5 giving them a total of 2 points. Unfortunately this left them in 5th position so went into the plate. In group B Sue Pledger and Shirley Walker were playing with father and son Nigel and Dom Reed. Their first game was a convincing win 11-1 against another Hadleigh Four. Their second game against a four from Island was a tight affair but managed to hold on for a 11-8 victory. Their third game against Greg, Joan, John Wade and Emily Poulter was even tighter and came out on top 7-6. Their last game against a West Hanningfield four was never in doubt as they ran out 16-4 winners. This gave them a maximum total of 8 points to top the group. Greg Wades rink in their opening game against the rink from Hadleigh gave them a 16-6 victory. Their next game against West Hanningfield brought them a 15-3 victory. Their last game against the Island four was drawn 5-5. This gave them 5 points and was placed second in the table on shot difference only. In Group C, Dave and Mark Chittock together with Pat Goodchild and Andy Philbrick won their opening game 10-4 against another Hadleigh four. Their next game was against the remaining Stonyhill members of Eileen Smith-Allen, Rob Wade, Pauline Child and Tony Ealham and in a tight and tactical game Tony’s team ran out 12-6 winners. Marks third game got them back on track as they won 8-6 against a Willow Park four. They then won their last game convincingly 14-3 against Brenda Crowe, Josie Robinson, Dave and Josh Woods. Tony’s rink in their first game got off to a flyer beating the Willow Park four 18-2. Against Hadleigh in their third game nothing seemed to go their way as they just lost out 7-9. They got back to winning ways in their last game 10-3 against the Hadleigh four. This left Tony and Mark level on 6 points but Tony was placed first on shot difference. In the quarter final of the plate Alan High’s rink met Carol and Bob Taylor with Dave and Sylvia Poulter and were comfortable winners 10-3. In the semi final they were up against James Newton, Rose Hambleton, Sue and Bob Quarterman and won 10-5. In the final they met Brenda Crowe, Josie Robinson, Josh and Dave Woods where they were comfortable winners with an end to spare. Congratulations to Colin Addis, Peggy May, Pat and Alan High on winning the plate. In the quarter finals of the main completion the winners of each match would qualify for the Nationals in March as Essex had been allocated 4 places. With 13 Stonyhill members in the last 8 surely someone would be going to the Nationals. Greg, Joan, John Wade with Emily Poulter were drawn against Steve Killington, Paul Bax, Mo Binstead and Linda Lambert and it was 4-4 going into the last end. Unfortunately they dropped a 3 on the last end and went out 4-7. Eileen, Rob, Pauline and Tony were drawn against Shirley and Roger Booker together with Shirley and Phil Banner and found themselves 7-1 down after 4 ends, Tony decided to shake things up by dropping himself down to number 2 and putting Rob up to skip. This seemed to change the game as they clawed their way back and going into the last end 7-5 down. With Phil Banner the opposing skip having one wood left was 3 down and Tony’s rink in a match winning position. Phil came into the head with weight cutting it down to one and giving him a narrow 7-6 victory. Sue Pledger, Shirley Walker, Dom and Nigel Reed faced Mitchell Young, Brenda and Brian Daley and Debbie Dillon and in a close game went out 5-7. The last remaining hope was Dave and Mark Chittock, Pat Goodchild with Andy Philbrick was drawn against Del and Chris Coates, Pauline Lowe and Babs Morokutti and in another close game unfortunately went out 4-7. Phil Banners rink were the eventual winners of the competition, defeating Mitchell Young’s rink in the final.

The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 47 players took part. There were 3 groups of 5 where the top 3 qualified and 8 groups of 4 where the top 2 qualified for the knock out stages. All games were played over 10 ends. There were a number of Stonyhill members taking part. In group C 3 members were drawn together. The group was topped by Greg Wade who was on fire winning all his group games giving him a maximum 8pts. He beat Roger Booker, Pauline Child, Pat Goodchild and Josie Robinson 11-8, 12-5, 9-6 and 14-3 respectively. Pat Goodchild came runner up in the group by winning her remaining games. Beating Roger 14-2, Pauline 8-6 and Josie 15-3 giving her 6pts. As it was a group of 5 the top 3 qualified and Pauline filled this position by gaining 4pts, defeating Roger 15-3 and Josie 13-2. Jonathan East was the sole member in Group D and qualified in runners up spot on shot difference with 4pts beating Terry Mead 9-4 and Brenda Crowe 11-3 but lost out to Ian Arthur 6-16. Colin Addis was drawn in Group E but failed to qualify on shot difference. He gained 3pts by beating Bob Taylor 10-8 and drawing with Linda Lambert 8 each. He just lost out in his last game 11-13 to Peter Fautley. Tony Ealham was drawn in Group G and lost his first game 8-10 to Mitchell Young. Drew his next game 10-10 with Steve Killington after going 7-0 behind. Needing a win in his last game to qualify in runners up spot he did this quite easily beating Phil Banner 17-2. John Pye was drawn in Group H and topped the group by scoring a maximum 6pts beating Keef Paxman, Dave Wooller and Del Coates 12-3, 17-3, 12-6 respectively. Eileen Smith-Allen was drawn in Group I. She just failed to qualify by finishing in 3rd spot beating Paul Reed 10-7 along the way but losing out to Matt Sifford 7-12 and Craig Burgess 7-13. Dave Chittock was drawn in Group J. He qualified by finishing in runners up spot on 4pts, defeating Roger Dover 10-6 and George Coleman 25-4 but lost to Dominic Reed 12-7. Mark Chittock and Peggy May were both drawn in Group K with Mark winning their battle 8-6. Mark went on to qualify by finishing in runners up spot on 4pts, beating Carol Taylor 15-4 but losing heavily to Shannon Mead 21-6. Peggy failed to qualify also losing to Shannon 16-3 but won her remaining game against Carol Taylor 13-3. So to the knock out stages and in the last 32 Greg Wade received a bye. Mark Chittock fell 6-0 behind early on to Pat Goodchild but fought back to win 11-7. John Pye and Tony Ealham had a close game but John was the eventual winner 8-6. Jonathan East game up against Emily Poulter but was to strong for her and ran out a 15-7 winner. Dave Chittock defeated Dave Woods 11-5. Pauline Child unfortunately lost out to Matt Sifford 14-3. In the 2nd Round (last 16) Mark Chittock could not get going as he lost to Matt Dillon 10-2. John Pye just lost out in a tight game with Chris Coates 7-6 on the last end. Jonathan East lost out to England international Peter Fautley 13-3. Greg Wade was up against County Manager Dave Chittock with experience showing the way as Dave ran out a 10-5 winner. So now down to the quarter final ( last 8 ), with the winners of this round qualifying for the National Finals at Melton Mowbray in April. Dave Chittock was the only clubs survivor but found the mat very challenging in his 17-0 defeat to Peter Fautley who eventually went on to be the County Singles champion by defeating Matt Dillon 10-7 in the Final.

The above annual competition to raise funds for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf took place at East Hanningfield where 20 teams took part. They were split up into 4 groups of 5 for the round robin with the top 2 from each group qualifying for the knock out stages. Stonyhill entered 2 teams with Stonyhill 1 being represented by Andy Philbrick, Jonathan East and Tony Ealham. In their first game against Hatfield Pevril 1 they ran out easy winners 15-2. The next 2 games were against the two Ramsden Bellhouse teams and had to fight all the way in both games but eventually won both 9-6 and 11-6. The last group game was against West Hanningfield and were convincing winners 11-2. With a maximum total of 8 points they topped their group to qualify for the knock out stages. Stonyhill 2 were represented by Greg Wade, Dave Chittock and his son Mark. Their first game was a comfortable win 10-5 against Toshto who were from Kent. Their second game also gave them a convincing win 10-2 against Island 2. In their third game against 3R’S after a tight struggle just scraped through with a 8-7 win. Their last game was against East Tilbury who were represented by Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child which brought them a 14-5 victory. Stonyhill 2 also scored a maximum 8 points to top the group and qualify. With both Stonyhill teams winning their group it meant they could not meet each other in the knock out stages until the final. East Tilbury won 2 of their remaining matches, 13-4 against Toshto, 12-5 against 3R’S but lost the other on the last end 6-7 to Island 2. However they qualified in runners up spot with 4 points, the same as Island 2 but had a better shot difference. John and Carol Finn with Alan High represented Willow Park and were drawn in group D. Their first game against the hosts East Hanningfied was very tough and eventually went down 1-12. Their second game was also another loss against Outwood Common 1 3-13. Fortunes turned their way for the next two games bringing them victories against Hatfield Peveril 1 and 3G 10-5 and 8-7 respectively to put them in the running to qualify with 4 points. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as they lost out on shot difference by one shot. 3G who was represented by the Wades, Joan, John and Rob gained 3 points by defeating Outwood Common 16-4 and drawing 9 each against Hatfield Pevril. Their remaining game against the hosts was a 9-10 defeat. So to the Quarter finals. Stonyhill 1 won a very tight match against Island 5-4 and Stonyhill 2 were successful to by beating Outwood Common 1 12-5. East Tilbury unfortunately lost out to East Hanningfield 3-9. An all Stonyhill final was still on the cards but the dream faded at the semi final stage with both teams going down. Stonyhill 1 after going 5-0 up after 2 ends let it slip and lost to East Hanningfield 6-10. Stonyhill 2 had a tight match with Ramsden Bellhouse 1 which was not decided until the last bowl had been bowled but eventually lost 7-9. PAULINE CHILD CLINCHES CLUB SINGLES TITLE
The club singles final was played last night (2/11/16) between Pauline Child and John Pye and what a game they put on in front of a full enthralled audience. It was a superb final with both players tring to outfox each other. After 2 ends John was leading 3-1 and then scored another 2 on the next end to go 5-1 up. Pauline fought back to score 1, 1, 1, 2 over the next 4 ends to take the lead 6-5. Back came John with a 2 to regain the lead 7-6. This game was nip and tuck all the way. Pauline then scored a 1 on the 9th end to level the scores 7-7. She then went 9-7 ahead by scoring another brace. John wouldn’t give up and scored a full house to go 11-9 up but then Pauline scored a 2 to level it up again 11-11 after 12 ends. With 3 ends to go John got the upper hand by scoring a 2 to go 13-11 up. Pauline then regained the advantage 14-13 by scoring a 3. With the last end to play it was anyone’s title. On the last end with each having 1 wood left John was holding the 1 to take into an extra end which would have been a fitting end to this memorable match. Pauline then played a weighty shot, yes a weighty shot to promote one of her woods near the ditch line as the jack was in the ditch. With Johns last wood he tried to take Pauline’s holding wood out but unfortunately just caught a short wood and the title was Pauline’s with a score line of 15-13. The audience showed their appreciation of a great final by giving both players a standing ovation as they collected their medals from club chairman Peter Harris.
NATIONAL TRIPLES – SUNDAY 30TH OCTOBER 2016
The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 25 teams took part. There were 5 groups of 5 in the round robin with the top 3 from each group qualifying for the knock out stages. There were plenty of Stonyhill members on show. Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham opened their account against a West Hanningfield triple and won convincingly 12-2. Their second game against a Hadleigh triple was even better winning 18-1. In their third game against another Hadleigh triple brought them another victory 12-5. Also in this group was the Wades, Greg, John and Rob. Their first match against Hadleigh gave them a 17-4 victory. Against West Hanningfield they won 8-3. The third match was against the other Hadleigh team in the group brought them a resounding 19-3 victory. The two Stonyhill teams met each other in the final group game and played out a 7-7 draw. Rob’s rink topped the group on shot difference with Tony’s rink also qualifying in runners up spot. Andy Philbrick, Colin Addis and Peggy May were drawn in group D. Unfortunately they had a disastrous day losing all four group games 6-7 to Tony Ryall’s triple from Hadleigh, 4-10 to Rochford, 5-19 to Anthony and Peter Fautley together with Steve Killington. Things got worse in their last game losing 0-10 to John Pye who was with Babs Morokutti and Keef Paxman. John’s triple qualified in runners up spot on 6 points winning their remaining games 9-8, 11-2 and losing the other 3-10. Jonathan East played with Emily Poulter and Josie Robinson. They managed to qualify in 3rd position on shot difference. Their first game against an Island triple was very close but went down 5-7. Their second game against a triple from Outwood Common was even closer but just lost out 6-7. They won their last 2 games easily, beating Hadleigh 9-4 and Outwood Common’s second team 12-1. Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child were in convincing form by winning all their group games. They beat Atte-Bower 11-7, edging out Dave and Matt Sifford with Paul Bax 8-7, running riot against Kay and Peter Debenham with Brenda Crowe 20-1 and just holding on against Paul Reed, Dave and Josh Woods 7-6. So we was down to the last 16 in the knock out stages. Pauline Child’s triple were drawn against Tony Ryall’s triple of Carol Perry and Mike Smith and in a very close game were eventually knocked out 4-6. Jonathan East triple lost heavily to Debbie Dillon, Del and Chris Coates 1-14. Rob Wade triple came up short against Matt Sifford’s triple 5-9. Tony Ealham’s triple had a tight affair against Keef Paxman’s triple and was all square 6-6 going into the last end but managed to get the one they needed to win 7-6 and progress to the quarter final. In the quarter final which incidentally the winners qualify for the National Finals next April were drawn against Chris Coates triple. Dave, Mark and Tony were always behind and chasing but run out of ends as they lost out by one shot 6-7. Debbie, Del and Chris went on to become Essex Triple Champions by beating Sheila Booker, Roger Dover and Dave Wooler in the final with a score line of 10-2.
TRIPLES COMPETITION-SNODLAND-SAT 29TH OCTOBER
Stonyhill sent their youth team across the waters and into Kent to for some much needed competition experience. This was an open Triples competition held at Snodland Kent.There were four teams from Essex: Alan High, June and Tony Hayes (SEAXE), Brenda Crowe, Josie Robinson and Sandra Stanton (3 Degrees), Brenda Neil, Del and Chris Coates, and of course our very young Jonathan East, Mark and David Chittock (Stonyhill). With a packed arena and a full entry of 24 teams the scene was sent. Each team had five games of eight ends to contest. Stonyhill got off to a flying start, winning their first game by 10 shots to 6, they quickly followed this with a 10-3 victory, but the best was yet to come in their third game and best of the day a 17-0 victory over their Kent rivals. In the penultimate game the outcome was a comfortable win for the Stonyhill youth 12 shots to 3. Brenda Neil and her team were close on the heals of Stonyhill team comfortably winning their first four matches leaving them on level points but behind on shot difference. The 3 degrees were having a respectable day with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats, with a shot difference of zero. Seaxe were also having a good day having drawn 1, lost one and won 2. Stonyhill and Brenda Neil level on points it was all to play for going into the last games. With form suddenly disappearing Stonyhills, struggling with the mats they lost their final game 5-10 to a Kent side that would eventually finish third overall. This left the door open for Brenda, Del and Chris to snatch victory at the last, but their opponents SEAXE also form Essex had other ideas, with June, Alan and Tony, easing to a 10-1 victory. With both teams losing their last game, shot difference came into play. With a better shot difference, Jonathan, Mark, and David were victorious.Well done to Stonyhill and all the teams that entered to make this a fun and enjoyable day

NATIONAL FOURS QUALIFIERS-SUNDAY 15TH OCT 2016
The above competition was held at Stonyhill and is run in parallel with the annual Essex Championships. The top four teams also qualify for the national finals at Melton Mowbray in April 2017. There were 14 teams that entered being split up into 2 groups of 5 where the top 3 qualified for the knock out stages together with the top 2 from the remaining group of 4. There was a number of Stonyhill members that took part. The four of Greg Wade, Tony Hayes, Jonathon East and John Wade (C2) were drawn in the group ‘C’ which was being called the group of death. In their opening game against a strong 4 of Matt Dillon, Del Coates, Mitchell Young and Craig Burgess (C1) they went down heavily 1-13. In their next game against another 4 from Stonyhill namely Colin Addis, Peggy May, John Pye and Shirley Walker (C5) was drawn 9-9 in a tight affair. They then lost their next game 4-7 against Peter Fautley, Steve Killington, Adam Sultana and Barry Hedges (C4). In their final game they needed to win to qualify and this they did 12-4 against Nigel Reed, Matt Sifford, Dom Reed and Anthony Fautley (C3). They qualified by finishing 3rd in their group. C5 were not able to qualify as they lost out on 3rd spot by shot difference. In their remaining games they beat C3 11-6 but lost the other two 3-12 to C1 and 3-13 to C4. The remaining 8 Stonyhill members of Andy Philbrick, Dave Chittock, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham (A2) were drawn together in the same group as Eileen Smith-Allen, Brenda Neil, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child (A3). A2 topped the group thus qualifying by winning all their 3 group games. They beat Doreen Thompson, Christine Brown, Bob and Carol Taylor (A1) 12-4. In their second game they beat Babs Morokutti, Mo Binstead, Joan Kay and Linda Lambert (A4) 15-5. The last game against A3 brought them a 10-5 victory. A3 also qualified from this group by finishing in runners up spot by beating A4 11-3 and A1 14-9. The first round of the knock out was actually the quarter finals, one step away from playing in the national finals in April 2017. C2 were 7-3 up going into the last end against Dave and Josh Woods, Keef Paxman and Paul Bax. Unfortunately Paul Bax played an outrageous shot with his last wood to give them a 5 and with John Wade unable to cut it down they went out 8-7. Paul Bax’s rink were the eventual winners of the competition. A3 came up against C4 and in a very close and good game went out 11-3. A2 were drawn against Sheila and Roger Booker together with Dave Wooler and Alan Jones. The stonyhill four dropped a 4 on the first end but managed to claw their way back into the game and it was all square 5-5 going into the last end. With each of the skips having one wood left Stonyhill were holding 2. Alan Jones just managed to promote one of his short bowls to take shot. Tony had a chance to take shot by just touching the holding wood and the jack would have gone back to 2 of his own teams woods. His last wood looked on target all the way but just caught the side of a wood 3 inches in front of the holding wood and thus went out 6-5. Alan Jones’s rink were eventual runners up.

The above competition took place at PML where 16 teams took part. The format was each team played 4 games where 10pts were awarded for a win and a point for each end won. Several Stonyhill members were on show. Stonyhill was represented by Heather and Bart Clements together with Carol and John Finn. In their first game they won convincingly 12-4 against Hatfield and by winning 7 of the 9 ends gained 17pts. Against Ramsden in their next match they scored a hot shot of 8 on one end but just managed to hold on to win 10-9 and 3 ends giving them 13pts. Unfortunately in their next game against Outwood Common they just lost out in a close encounter 7-9 but got 3pts. In their last game against a team controversially calling themselves Essex Friends (not to be confused with Friends of Essex) they won convincingly 13-5 and 5 ends giving them 15pts. This gave them a total of 48pts and finished in 5th spot. The competition was won by East Tilbury with 61pts and who was represented by Lyn Munns, Eileen Smith-Allen, Tony Ealham and Pauline Child. Runners up were Friends of Essex on 51pts and represented by Andy Philbrick, Dave Chittock, Jonathan East and Mark Chittock. HERONS OPENING FIXTURE CANCELLED
Stonyhill Herons opening fixture at home to Springhouse on Wednesday 19th October has been cancelled and will now be played on Wednesday 14th December.
CHRISTMAS PARTY 2016
This years Christmas party will take place at Stonyhill on Saturday 10th December from 6:30 to 11pm at a cost of £2 per member. This will include a night of fun bowling, free raffle, fish and chips and a desert. Guests are welcome at a cost of £8 but if they wish to join in on the fun bowling the charge will be £10.
CLUB PAIRS FINAL 2016
The final of the club pairs took place on Wednesday 28th September. It was between Stewart, Tony and Carol and Mark. Stewart and Tony got off to a good start and after 3 ends stormed into an 8-0 lead. The next 4 ends were shared keeping them 11-3 ahead. The next 5 ends went Carols and Marks way scoring a 1,1,0,2,2 to bring them back into the match and with only 3 ends to go were only trailing by 3 shots 12-9. Stewart and Tony had other ideas though and over the next 2 ends scored a 1 and a 2 to make them club pairs champions 15-9 with an end to spare. It was a good final played in an excellent spirit with all 4 bowlers playing extremely well. Congratulations to Stewart Blackhall and Tony Ealham but well done to the runners up Carol Finn and Mark Chittock too. This only leaves the singles final to be played now to complete the club competitions this year and this will take place on Wednesday 2nd November.

The clubs AGM took place on Wednesday 7th September which was followed by a superb banquet put on by Heather Clements. At the AGM the present committee were again elected and voted in. Also the league teams were announced for the coming season.
ISLAND OPEN – SATURDAY 20th AUGUST 2016
Seventeen teams from across Essex and one from Kent, met to lock horns in the annual Island Bowls Open Day.Teams were placed into three groups of six, each team playing each other within their group, played over seven ends, 2points awarded for a win plus one point for each end won. Winners of each group going through to the semi-finals plus the best runners-up. Stonyhill had two teams present and many more members representing various clubs. Stonyhill B was placed in group two, Stonyhill A in group three. Group one was a very tight affair with only three points separating the top four teams. East Tilbury 1 winning this group narrowly beating SEAXE 24 points to 23. Group two was won by 3G finishing with 33 points, runners up were Hollingbourne with 27. Unfortunately this meant that Stonyhill B who finished on 24 points did not progress from the group, but with two wins, one loss and a hard fought draw in their second game against Hatfield Peverel which saw them come from 7 shots down without winning an end to level the match 7-7. The team comprising of Carol and John Finn, Stewart Blackhall, and Colin Addis can be proud of their days work. Group three was another tight group being decided on the final match of the group, with Sonyhill A represented by Andy Philbrick, Jonathan East, David and Mark Chittock, on 25 points and Willow Park A on 22 points. Willow park had to win by 4 clear points to beat Stonyhill A to top the group. After some tight opening ends Stonyhill then managed to pull ahead winning the match 13 -3 and thus topping the group. With the draw already having been made for the semi finals saw 3G (Edna Burridge, Joan, John and Rob Wade) matched against Hollingbourne who had finished runners-up in 3G’s group, with the head to head resulting in a draw with four shots apiece, but with Hollingbourne winning more ends therefore picking up an extra point. The semi- final was not such a close affair with 3G running out 7-3 winners to secure their place in the final. The second semi final was against group one winners East Tilbury 1 (Eileen Smith-Allen, Pauline Child, Lynn, and Roger Munns) against group two winners Stonyhill A. After good start from East Tilbury taking a four on the first end, and despite some very tight ends, Stonyhill managed to take the lead and go on to win 10-4. The final was Stonyhill A against 3G, a match which saw some very tight ends, but with Stonyhill scoring five shots in one end 3G were always struggling to recover. Stonyhill went on to win six of the seven ends with a final score 10-1 in favour of Stonyhill. Well done and congratulations to Andy, Jonathan, Mark and David.

The above competition was held at East Hanningfield where Stonyhill entered 2 teams. Stonyhill 1 was Greg Wade with Dave and Mark Chittock. Stonyhill 2 was represented by Andy Philbrick, Johnathon East and Tony Ealham. Sixteen teams entered with each team playing 6 matches and Stonyhill looking to defend their title. Stonyhill 2 first match was against 3 Degrees and after a tight start eventually winning comfortably 10-2. Stonyhill 1 opening match was against Rochford also winning comfortably 12-5. In the second round of matches Stonyhill 2 beat East Tilbury 10-6 in a close game. Stonyhill 1 won convincingly against Hollingbourne from Kent 12-3. Stonyhill 2 won their next match against Rochford 9-5 whilst Stonyhill 1 beat the 3 Degrees 15-4. After lunch Stonyhill 2 lost out to the team from Kent in a close game 6-5. Stonyhill 1 had a close game with East Tilbury (Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild, Pauline Child) winning 9-6. In the penultimate match the two Stonyhill teams met each other and in a very tense and close game Stonyhill 2 got a 4 on the penultimate end and ran out 10-5 winners. This left the competition wide open with 4 teams in contention going into the last round of matches with shot difference looking more likely to decide the final placings. In the end shot difference was not needed as Stonyhill 2 won their last game against Care Bears 17-1 whilst Stonyhill 1 could only manage a draw against Ramsden 6-6 and East Hanningfield and 3G (Joan, John and Rob Wade) both losing. Well done and congratulations to the winners Andy, Johnathon and Tony. Also to the runners up Greg, Dave and Mark.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the renovation of toilets and changing rooms are taking longer than normal. Therefore the club will be closed on Wednesday 3rd of August too. The club will be open the following Wednesday 10th August where together with a normal roll up the Club Pairs Quarter Finals and Semi Finals will take place. Memorial trophy winners for 2016 were Tony Ealham, Bart Clements and Stewart Blackhall. The runners up were Carol Finn, Joan Wade and Pat Goodchild. They can be seen above with their trophies which were presented by club chairman Peter Harris. The final was played in a good spirit watched by a fantastic and supportive crowd. Stonyhill had entered a team of four for this event, Andy Philbrick, Carol Finn, John Finn, and David Chittock.
Their first game of the day was against a SEAXES team consisting of three other members of Stonyhill June Hayes, Brenda Neil and Tony Hayes.
With some solid play from the Stonyhill four they won this match after six ends 10-1.
Their second game was a much tighter affair against a home side with Stonyhill coming out on top 6-3 winners.
Stonyhill with a slight lead in a very tight third game against Hatfield Perveril leading 4-3 after four ends.
In the fifth Hatfield were on the jack and holding shot, David went for a slight overdraw to try and knock Hatfield off the jack, however David caught the jack too full on, and sprung the jack to a cluster of waiting Hatfields woods. Five down!! Stonyhill came back in the sixth to win the end. With the scores now Stonyhill 5, Hatfield Perveral 8, Stonyhill went into he last end needing 3 shots for a draw. Stony holding four, David drew in. Now holding five. Hatfields skipper with the last wood of the game and having already missed a difficult drew with his previous shot now had to play the same shot again to save his team from their first defeat. This time he did not miss. Stony’s first defeat losing 9-5.
Stony soon bounce back winning their next two games against Rochford 11-5, and Outwood Commom 10-1 with some solid lead play from Andy, and some great back-up play from Carol and John leaving David only to cement their position.
There were four other Stonyhill members on show playing for various clubs Colin Addis, Peggy May, Pat and Alan High.

Second place went down to the wire with four teams all on 8 points, but with the best shot difference of the four Stonyhill finish runners-up.
The outright winners of the competition winning all five of their games East Hanningfield, Congratulations.

The round robin of the above annual competition took place on Wednesday 15th June. There were 33 players taking part who were split into eleven teams of triples. There were two groups, one of six and one of five with the winner of each group playing each other in the Final on Wednesday 13th July at 9pm. Group A winners were Stewart Blackhall, Bart Clements and Tony Ealham. Group B was very close with three teams finishing on seven points but with a greater shot difference Joan Wade, Carol Finn and Pat Goodchild topped the group. HOLIDAY PAIRS – SUNDAY JUNE 12th 2016
The holiday pairs competition sponsored by Barry Dillon of Warmans Holidays was held at Stonyhill where the winners receive vouchers worth £75 each towards the cost of a Warmans Holiday. There were 20 pairs who entered which was split into 4 groups of 5 with the top 2 in each group qualifying for the main competition and 3rd and 4th qualifying for the plate. Plenty of Stonyhill members were on show. Dave and Mark Chittock got off to a winning start beating Babs and John Pye 12-4. The also won their next game convincingly 18-5 against Edna Burridge and Rose. They then lost their next game 10-5 against Colin Addis and Peggy May. They got back to winning ways by winning their last group game 9-8 against Andy Philbrick and Tony Hayes. They finished in runners up spot qualifying for the main competition. John Pye with Babs finished in 4th position, therefore going into the plate competition. Andy Philbrick and Tony Hayes won 2 of their remaining group games also going into the plate by finishing 3rd. Unfortunately Edna and Rose finished in 5th position and being eliminated from the competition. Peggy and Colin qualified for the main competition as group winners. Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham won their first group game against Christine and Paul Reed in a close game10-9. They then lost their next game against a Hadleigh Pair 12-7. They qualified for the main competition by finishing in runners up spot as they won their last 2 games against Mo Binstead and Alan Kay 10-6 and Del and Chris Coates 13-4. Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child started their campaign with a 10-8 win against Chris Lomas and Tony Orpin. In a close second game it ended in a draw 10 each against a pair from Island. Unfortunately they lost their last 2 games 13-9 and 10-5 to Peter Fautley/Paul Bax and Linda Lambert/Dave Sifford respectively. However they done enough to finish in 3rd position and move into the plate. In the quarter finals of the plate competition Babs and John Pye beat a pair from Hadleigh 15-7 moving into the semi final where they met Chris Lomas and Tony Orpin. They won 11-6 so went into the final where they came across Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child who got there by beating Josie Robinson and Brenda Crowe in the quarter final 18-4 and in the semi final Andy Philbrick and Tony Hayes 12-6 who beat Mo Binstead and Alan Kay 11-8 in the quarter final. The plate final was close but John Pye with Babs ran out 11-7 winners. In the quarter final of the main competition Dave and Mark Chittock went out to Del and Chris Coates 11-10 after an extra end and a close measure. Pat and Tony defeated Colin and Peggy 13-11. In the semi final they met Nigel and Dominic Reed and in a close game they eventually won 10-9. In the final itself they played Linda Lambert and Dave Sifford and won 10-4 to win the competition. Well done and Congratulations to Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham who received their trophies from the president of the county Sam Lambert as seen in the above photo.

It is with great sadness that Don passed away this morning (29/4/16). He was a formidable bowler in his time who stayed at one club Sanguine, throughout his bowling life. The above competition took place at East Hanningfield where 16 teams took part. Each team had 6 games and the team with the most points were declared the winners. Stonyhill had 2 teams and Stonyhill 1 were represented by Andy Philbrick, Dave Chittock, Jonathon East and Tony Ealham, Stonyhill 2 were represented by Carol and John Finn together with Bart Clements and Mark Chittock. Stonyhill 2 started the days proceedings against Island but unfortunately in a close game just lost out 6-3. Their second game against West Hanningfield was also a close game but went the same way, losing out 6-4. In their third game against 3G (John and Joan Wade, Alan and Pat High) they got their campaign off to winning ways by a 9-5 score line. They then got their second victory in their next game against Outwood Common 1 by a convincing 11-1. In their penultimate game they came across Outwood Common 2 and won by 12 shots to 6. Unfortunately they just missed out in their last game by one shot, losing 6-5 to a very strong East Hanningfield team. Stonyhill 2 totalled 6 points overall. Stonyhill 1 were in form all day. Winning their first game against East Tilbury 1 (Eileen Smith-Allen, Emily Poulter, Pat Goodchild, Pauline Child) 8-2. East Tilbury 1 went on to win 4 of their remaining games. Beating Hatfield Peveril 12-1, Burham from Kent 6-1, Rochford 1 10-2, Rochford 2 9-3. Unfortunately lost out to 3 Degrees in a close game 5-4. East Tilbury 1 gained 8 points. Woodlands which involved Peggy May and Colin Addis finished in 3rd place. Stonyhill 1’s second game was against East Tilbury 2 containing Roger and Lynn Munns but Stonyhill were just to good winning 14-1. East Tilbury 2 also finished on 8 points by winning 4 of their remaining games 8-5, 8-5, 8-6, 5-4 against Rochford 2, Burham, Rochford 1 and Hatfield Peveril respectively. Losing the other 5-4 to 3 degrees. Stonyhill 1 never looked back as they beat Hatfield Peveril 9-1, Rochford 1 11-3, Burham 7-3 and 3 degrees 17-0 to give them a 100% record and to be confirmed as outright winners of the competition with 12 points. Stonyhill had four players representing Essex in the above competition. They were Andy Philbrick, Dave and Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham. After winning 2 of their 3 group games they topped their group to qualify for the knock out stages. Unfortunately they got knocked out in the last 32 to a team from Devon.

Stonyhill had 8 players representing Essex in the above competition after qualifying at the county qualifiers at the beginning of the season. Essex 2 were represented by Eileen Smith-Allen, Pauline Child. Rob Wade and Tony Ealham. Essex 4 was represented by Peggy May, Joan, Greg and John Wade. Both teams were knocked out at the last 16 stage after qualifying from the round robin to the knock out stages by finishing runners up in their respective groups.

The result of the match between PML and Outwood Common tonight went in favour of PML 3-2, but more importantly went the way for the Magpies to finish in runners up spot and be promoted to Division 4. The funeral of Terry Mathews will take place at 3pm on Wednesday 13th April at Bentley Crematorium, Ongar Road, Brentwood, CM15 9RZ. It has been requested that no flowers be sent. TERRY MATHEWS-RIP
It is with great sadness that after a long battle with cancer Terry passed away peacefully this morning (24/3/16). Terry was an excellent bowler who played for many clubs including Outwood Common, East Hanningfield and Stonyhill. He also played for Essex County at all levels. He was also an international umpire and served on the league, county and ESMBA committees in many positions. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and condolences go to Carol and his family at this time. Funeral details will be given as soon as possible

The above competition was held at PML and Stonyhill was represented by Heather and Bart Clements together with Carol and John Finn. The format was 4 games where it was 10 points for a win, 5 for a draw with 1 point for each end won. In their first game they came up against Friends of Essex (Peggy May, Edna Burridge, Stewart Blackhall and Tony Ealham). Stonyhill raced into a 7-1 lead after 3 ends but FOE came back to win 10-7 but 2 points were gained. In Their next game they played Heron Park and after a close encounter ran out 7-5 winners, also winning 4 ends netting them a total of 14 points. There next 2 games were very close affairs and eventually beating Springhouse and East Tilbury (Eileen Smith-Allen, George Christy, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child) both by the same score line 8-7 and 5 ends for each match. East Tilbury’s remaining games gave them a 17-0 victory over Warren but lost to FOE 5-7 and Springhouse 9-11. This gave Stonyhill a grand total of 46 points leaving them in 5th place out of 16 entries. The eventual winners were Friends of Essex with Sanguine (Teresa Kidd, Joan Southon, Brenda Neil and Barry Clarke) finishing up in runners up spot.
COMBAT STRESS CHARITY TRIPLES-SAT 27TH FEBRUARY 2016
The above event was held at Snodland and Stonyhill who was represented by Jonathan East, Mark and David Chittock lost their first game of the day in a very tight match to the host team Burnham. Going into the last end of the game it was drawn at five each. Stonyhill were holding and had three woods waiting at the back, but were surrounded by Burnham with just two woods to play. Mark Chittock skip for the day decided to play for the jack and to bring it back to the waiting woods. Mark managed to hit the jack but not with enough pace leaving Burham holding one shot. Burham decided not to bowl and won the match 6-5.
The next three games went Stonyhill’s way with them winning all 8-3 against Headcorn, 11-1 against Kingsdown B and 16-2 against Joysden Wood. Stonyhill went into their last game needing a win to keep them in the running for first place but also needed other results to go their way.
After a tight and tense game against Kingsdown ‘A’ they managed to pick up the one shot needed to win their last match on the last end of the game, however results did not go their way and with only four wins out of five ended up as runner-up for the day with eight points to the eventual winners Whiteoaks with nine points.

The above competition took place at East Hanningfield where 18 teams took part and were split up into 3 groups of 6 all playing 5 games. The winners of each group and best runner up across the 3 groups qualified for the semi finals. Stonyhill had 2 teams in the competition where Stonyhill 1 was represented by Andrea Philbrick, Mark Chittock, Jonathon East and Tony Ealham, Stonyhill 2 was represented by Heather and Bart Clements with Carol and John Finn. Stonyhill 1 played 3 degrees in their first game and won 8-3. In their second game they came across East Tilbury containing 3 Stonyhill members Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child together with Emily Poulter but Stonyhill 1 were the eventual winners 9-4. In their third game they came across 3G and in a close game Peggy May, Josh Woods, John and Rob Wade were the winners 5-3. In their penultimate game Stonyhill 1 met Burham who were a team from Kent but included Tony Orpin and got back to winning ways beating Burham 8-2. Stonyhill 1 won their final game against Outwood Common 7-3. Stonyhill 1 eventually finished top of the group on 12 points as it was 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. Burham finished in runners up spot on 10. 3G with a greater shot difference were placed ahead of East Tilbury both on 9 points. Outwood Common were placed 6th having gained no points at all. Stonyhill 2 beat Rochford convincingly 14-3. They also beat Sanguine 10-5. They needed one more win to top their group but unfortunately they lost their other 3 games 5-6, 4-9,3-11 to West Hanningfield, Hatfield Peveril and Island 1 respectively. In a very close finish to the group they were eventually placed in 5th position. In the semi finals Stonyhill 1 were drawn against Sanguine who were last last years winners. Sanguine was made up of Brenda Neil, Joan Southon, Teresa Kidd and Colin Addis. Sanguine led all the way and going into the last end were 4-3 up but Stonyhill 1 got a 6 and therefore ran out 9-4 winners. In the other semi final Burham who were best runners up overall beat Island 7-6. Therefore the final was between the two qualifiers from the same group but Stonyhill 1 was always in control going 8-1 up after 4 ends and eventually won 8-4.

NATIONAL SINGLES-SUNDAY 10TH JANUARY 2016
The above competition was held at Stonyhill where 50 players took part. There were 10 groups of 5 for the round robin with the top 3 in each group plus the two next highest players across all ten groups qualifying for the knock out stages. Eight stonyhill members took part and on the whole had a vey good day. One shock was Pauline Child only winning one game and failing to qualify. John Finn who was in a tough group also failed to qualify by failing to win a game but did not disgrace himself as they were very close games. Greg Wade, Eileen Smith-Allen and George Christy all went through by finishing third in their respective groups. So too did Dave and Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham by finishing runners up in their groups having all lost one game. In the first round of the knock out (last 32) George Christy lost out to Alan Jones from Island. Steve Killington knocked out Greg Wade. Dave Chittock, after a close encounter put out Roger Dover 13-9 by scoring a 4 on the last end. Mark Chittock beat Danny Curl 11-5. Tony Ealham met Eileen Smith-Allen where Tony ran out the 15-2 winner. In the second round (last 16) Dave Chittock came across ex county singles player Keef Paxman from GPCA. In a very close and nail biting game Dave just lost out 9-10. Mark Chittock was drawn against another county singles player Matt Dillon from Springhouse and after a close fought battle Mark just lost out 6-7. Tony Ealham came across in form county player Chris Coates also from Springhouse. In a very tight game where the score line swayed one way then the other after each end Tony eventually ran out the 9-6 winner. In the quarter final stages which if you win you are guaranteed a place at the Nationals. The singles is the only discipline Tony has not qualified in for the Nationals after failing at the quarter final stage twice before and this time could not have a stiffer task when drawn against ex National Singles winner Barry Hedges. Barry raced into a 6-0 lead before Tony got a 4 to give him a glimmer of hope and bring him back into the game only 2 shots behind 4-6. That was to be Tony’s only score and eventually Tony lost 12-4 and thus just missing out on National qualification in the singles for the 3rd time. Barry Hedges went on to win the singles title by beating Adam Sultana 7-6 in the final. Steve Kiliington beat Matt Sifford 12-3 for the 3rd/4th place play off.

The above competition was held at Stonyhill where 40 teams took part. There were 8 groups for the round robin with the top 2 in each group qualifying for the knock out stages. Again many Stonyhill members took part where there were mixed fortunes. Pauline Child and Eileen Smith-Allen won all their group games convincingly to top their group and qualify. Brenda Neil who was partnered with Barry Clarke also topped their group. Dave and Mark Chittock also qualified by finishing runners up. The three remaining pairs of John and Carol Finn, Tony Ealham and Andrea Philbrick, Peggy May and Greg Wade could only win one game each and therefore failed to qualify. In the first round of the knock out stages Brenda Neil/Barry Clarke met Pauline Lowe and Babs Morokutti but unfortunately lost 4-10. Mark and Dave Chittock came across the Ramsden Bellhouse pair of Peter and Kay Debenham and could never get back after conceding a 4 and eventually went down 9-12. Pauline Child and Eileen Smith-Allen were drawn against a strong pair from Island, Alan Jones and Dave Wooller. This was a very tight and excellent match but eventually went down 7-8. The eventual winners were Anthony Fautley and Steve Killington beating Mitchell Young and Craig Burgess 9-7, a repeat of last years final.

The annual twixmas competition run by SEAXE SMBC was held at Marconi on Sunday 27th December. There were 20 teams of four that took part which included a number of Stonyhill members. Each team played 5 matches with 2points for a win, 1 for a draw and a point for each end that was won giving a maximum of 9 points per match. It was a very close affair with the top placings going down to the last end of the day. A good day was had by all especially the Stonyhill members as 17 of them filled the first 5 places and those places being separated by 3 points. The eventual winners were Brenda Neil, Colin Addis, Barry Clarke and Shirley Walker on 30 points. Close behind by 1 point in runners up spot were the Wade family of Greg, Joan, John and Rob. Further behind again by 1 point on 28 there was a tie but by a greater shot difference Heather and Bart Clements together with Stewart Blackhall and Peter Harris finished in third place. Fourth spot went to Sue and John Pledger with Jack Mcmenamen skipped by Dave Chittock. Fifth place on 27 points went to Andrea Philbrick, Eileen Smith-Allen, Pauline Child and Tony Ealham. NATIONAL TRIPLES-SUNDAY 6th DECEMBER 2015
The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 22 teams took part. They were split up into three groups of four where the top two qualified into the knock out stages of the main competition and two of five where the top three also qualified. The bottom two of each group went into the plate. Stonyhill had a number of members playing where there was a mixed bag of fortunes. Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham were in a group of five but unfortunately lost all their group games. They were in the same group as the East Tilbury three of Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child who gained seven points to finish runners up in the group. The Wade family of Greg, Joan and John also finished in the bottom two of their group. Also qualifying into the main competition were Andrea Philbrick who was playing with Brenda Crowe and Tony Slater. The Sanguine three of Brenda Neil, Tony Hayes and Colin Addis together with Peggy May who was playing with Kay and Peter Debenham also went into the main competition. In the first round of the main competition Peggy May’s triple lost out to the eventual runners up of Anthony Faultley, Peter Fautley and Steve Killington 5-7. The East Tilbury triple beat the Sanguine triple 11-3. Andy Philbrick triple lost out to eventually third place team of Paul Cairns, Paul Bax and Rachel Cordy 3-11. In the Quarter Finals the East Tilbury triple lost to the eventual winners Mat Dillon, Barry Hedges and Adam Sultana 5-13. In the preliminary round of the plate competition the Wade’s beat a Hadleigh triple 12-6. In the Quarter Final they lost in a tight game to an Island triple 9-10. Tony Ealham’s triple beat an Outwood Common triple 17-0. In the semi final they beat an Atte-Bower three 11-4. In the final of the plate Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham met another Outwood Common triple of Mo Binstead, Joan Kay and Linda Lambert but it was a one sided affair with Tony’s team running out 15-0 winners to win the plate.

The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 16 teams took part. They were split up into four groups of four with the top two qualifying for the main competition and the bottom two going into the plate. Stonyhill had a number of players participating. Andrea Philbrick, Dave and Mark Chittock with Tony Ealham opened their account against last years runners up John and Carol Finn who were with Pat and Alan High. After a tight start Tonys team eventually run out 12-4 winners. In their two remaining games they won 12-4 and 14-4 against a Paul Bax four and a four from Hadleigh respectively to top the group and qualify. John Finns four lost their second game against Hadleigh so had to win their last game against Paul Bax to qualify to. With one end to go they looked as though they had done this being four in front but unfortunately dropped a five thus going into the plate. Stewart Blackhall who was playing with Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild and Pauline Child managed to get four points to finish runners up in their group also qualifying for the main competition. In the quarter final of the plate competition Johns Finns rink came up against a strong four from Outwood Common but was on the wrong end of a 12-6 score line. In the q/f of the main competition Tony’s rink faced the three Wades of Joan, Greg and John plus Peggy May. In a very close affair Tony’s rink ran out 8-5 winners. The East Tilbury three together with Stewart came across a very strong four of Peter Fautley, Steve Killington, Adam Sultana and Barry Hedges. What a game this was. It went all the way with the last end having to be played again with Pauline killing the jack. Yes you have read that right Pauline killed the jack. Eventually Barry’s team were victorious 10-7. In the semi final it was Tony’s rink versus Barry’s rink. This matched lived up to the previously described match with Tony’s rink going into the last end 7-6 behind. With Tony’s last wood to come they were 4 down and his only shot was to kill the jack and replay the end. He caught it perfectly but unfortunately the jack caught the edge of the fender and stayed in the corner therefore losing 9-6. Well done and congratulations to Andrea Philbrick, Dave Chittock, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham who eventually finished in third place due to a walk over against a Springhouse four and qualified for the Nationals up at Derbyshire next April.

It is with great sadness that Ruby passed away peacefully Friday night (13/11/15). She played for Warren Heath before joining Stonyhill and was a tremendous player helping her teams to League titles. She also played for the Essex ‘B’ team.

A fives competition was held at Marconi by SEAXE SMBC. There were 12 entries, After all games had been played John and Carol Finn, Andrea Philbrick together with Bart and Heather Clements gathered a total of 9 points. This put them level at the top with a Marconi Five. However the Stonyhill 5 had a greater shot difference of plus 55 and were thus crowned the winners. Congratulations to all five of you.

The above competition took place at Stonyhill where 14 teams took part. They were split into 3 groups, 2 of 5 where the top 3 qualified and one of 4 where the top 2 qualified for the knock out stages. A whole host of Stonyhill members took part. The draw took place in the morning. A2 was made up of Eileen Smith-Allen, Rob Wade, Pauline Child and Tony Ealham. In the group stages they beat 4 from Outwood Common (A1) 15-1 in their opening game. In the second game they drew 5 all with Babs, Jean Herson, Del Coates and Nigel Reed (A4). In their final game they beat Brenda Neil ,Pat Goodchild, Barry Clarke and Colin Addis (A3) 13-2 to top the group and qualify for the knock out stages together with A4 who finished runners up. Andy Philbrick teamed up with Peter Williams, Tony Slater and Brenda Crowe (C3). Unfortunately they didn’t qualify so went into the plate competition. Dave Chittock together with Josie, Christine and Paul Reed (C1) were in the same group and also finished in the bottom 2 to move into the plate competition as well. Greg. Joan and John Wade together with Peggy May (C4) were also in this group and accumulated enough points to finish runners up and go into the main draw. B3 was made up of Carol and John Finn and Sue and John Pledger who were drawn in a very tough group but failed to qualify and also went into the plate. In the quarter finals of the plate Andy Philbricks rink just lost out to Pat Goodchild and Brenda Neils four. John Finns rink together with his wife Carol and Sue and John Pledger were defeated by a four from Outwood Common (A1). Dave Chittocks rink won their semi final so moved into the final to play Pat and Brendas four. Pat, Brenda, Colin and Barry were the eventual winners of the plate trophy where Dave Chittocks four came runners up. In the quarter finals of the main competition Tony Ealhams rink beat a four from Hadleigh 6-4. John Wades rink came from 2 behind on the last end to get a 3 to beat a strong four of Peter Fautley, Linda Lambert, Mo Binstead and Steve Killington. In the semi final the 8 remaining Stonyhill members came against one another but in a very close game Tonys rink held on to beat John Wades team 5-4. The final itself was a very tight affair and finished 4 each and so an extra end had to be played where Tonys four just lost out by one shot to Brenda and Brian Daley and Sadie and Mitchell Young. Congratulations to Eileen Smith-Allen, Rob Wade, Pauline Child and Tony Ealham for finishing runners up and have definitely booked their place in the National Finals. Unfortunately Peggy May, Joan, Greg and John Wade lost their 3/4th place play off against A4 but hopefully Essex will be allocated 4 places for the National Finals up in Derbyshire next April.

The above event was in aid of hearing dogs for the deaf where twenty teams took part including two from Stonyhill. The teams were split into 4 groups of 5 where the top 2 qualified for the knock out stages. Stonyhill 1 was represented by Andrea Philbrick, Jonathon East and Tony Ealham. They got off to a good start beating Woodlands in their opening game 8-5. In their second game against St Andrews from Clacton they dropped a 3 on the last end but still won 7-6. In the third game they could do no wrong as they ran out 11-1 winners against West Hanningfield. To complete their group matches they came up against Rochford and won comfortably 15-2 to top the group with a 100 per cent record and move forward to the knock out stages. Woodlands also qualified as runners up. Stonyhill 2 were represented by Heather, Adrian and Bart Clements. Unfortunately they lost all their group games but put up a good fight losing narrowly 7-5, 7-6, 8-5, 8-7 to Island 2, Burham, FOE 1 and Outwood Common 2 respectively. In the quarter finals Stonyhill 1 came across Burham from Kent. Going into the last end Stonyhill were 6-4 down but managed to get a 3 to scrape through 7-6 in a very tight game. In the Semi Final they met East Tilbury who were represented by Pat High, Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child. They qualified by winning their group gaining 6pts from 8 and beating 3G in the Quarter Final quite easily 18-4. In this Semi East Tilbury raced into a 6-0 lead. Stonyhill did not panic and eventually came back to run out 10-7 winners. The final was between Stonyhill and Woodlands. Woodlands who were made up of Doreen Thompson, Peggy May and Nigel Reed progressed to the Final by beating Outwood Common 11-5 in the Quarter Final and coming back from 5-0 down to beat Seaxe 10-6 in the Semi. The Final was very tight to begin with and after 6 ends it was all square at 4 each but in the last 3 ends Stonyhill scored a 1, 3 and a 4 to win 12-4. Congratualations to Andrea, Jonathon and Tony for being winners of the competition winning every game in the process. As mentioned earlier the competition was in aid of hearing dogs for the deaf and over the day £500 was raised.

CLUB SINGLES FINAL
Pauline Child and Tony Ealham, two great friends put on a great match in the final of the club singles for 2015. Pauline could do no wrong as she scored a 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1 to go 10-0 up after 6 ends. Tony then scored a 4 but Pauline hit back with a 1 and the next two ends were shared with 1 each leaving the score 12-5 in Paulines favour after 10 ends. Tony come storming back in the next 4 ends scoring a 3, 4, 3,1 to lead 16-12 going into the last end. With Pauline needing a 4 on the last end to take the match into an extra end which would have been a fitting finish to the final could only get a 2 therefore leaving Tony the 16-14 winner. Both players put on an excellent show and it was certainly a game of 2 halves. Congratulations go to both players. ISLAND FOURS COMPETITION – SATURDAY 8th AUGUST 2015
RUNNERS UP
Island held their second annual competition where 21 teams took part. They were split into 3 groups of 7 where the top team in each group and best runner up qualified for the semi finals. The format was 2 points for a win plus a point for each end won. Stonyhill entered 2 teams of which Stonyhill 1 was made up Heather Clements, Carol Finn, Bart Clements and John Finn. In their first two games they lost to Hatfield Peveril 8-5 and Canvey one 7-3. Their third game brought them a convincing 12-1 victory over Wickford. Their remaining 3 games did not bring them much luck as they went down 4-6, 3-9 and 4-9 to Outwood Common 2, Friends of Essex and 3G respectively giving them a total of 20 points. Friends of Essex, represented by Andy Philbrick, Sue Pledger, Jack Mcmenamin and Tony Hayes were runaway winners of this group with a total of 39 points. They won their next 5 games 17-2 against Canvey 1, 11-2 against 3G, 5-2 against Hatfield Peveril, 6-3 against Wickford and 6-2 against Outwood Common 2. Stonyhill 2 was represented by Peter Harris, Jonathon East, Mark Chittock and Tony Ealham. They got off to a shaky start going 6-0 behind against St. Andrews but managed to pull it back to get a 6-6 draw. Their next 5 games brought them convincing victories, 12-5 against Suffolk, 7-2 against East Tilbury 2, 11-2 against Sanguine, 9-2 against Outwood Common 1 and 8-3 against Hadleigh Woods. They managed to win their group gaining 40 points. The other group was won by East Hanningfield and they met the best runners up Woodlands in the Semi Final with East Hanningfield running out 12-1 winners. In the other Semi Final Stonyhill 2 could not get a look in against some terrific bowling by Friends of Essex eventually going down heavily 10-1. The Final itself was a close affair with East Hanningfield eventual 8-5 winners. Congratulations and well done to the runners up, Andrea Philbrick, Sue Pledger, Jack Mcmenamin and Tony Hayes.

The above competition was held at East Hanningfield where 20 teams took part. There were four groups of 5 in a round robin with the top two qualifying for the knock out stages. Stonyhill entered two teams and Stonyhill 1 represented by Andrea Philbrick, Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham opened their account with a draw against Friends of Essex 2 (Carol and John Finn and John Pledger) 8-8. They won their next 3 games against West Hanningfield 7-5, St.Andrews 7-4 and Hollingbourne from Kent 7-3 to top their group and qualify for the knock out stages Stonyhill 2 were represented by Heather and Bart Clements and Adrian Atkinson. Their opening game was a very tight affair against East Tilbury managing to get a four on the last end to win 8-7. They lost their next game against Sanguine 10-5. They then beat 3 degrees skipped by Dave Chittock 17-1. In their last game they drew against 3G (John, Joan and Rob Wade) 9-9 but it was enough for both of them to qualify.Friends of Essex 2 beat St Andrews comfortably 9-1 but then lost their last 2 against Hollingbourne 6-5 and West Hanningfield 6-4. 3G also beat 3 degrees 15-1, Sanguine 9-3 and East Tilbury 7-3. In the Quarter Finals Stonyhill 2 just lost out to East Hanningfield Horsehoes 7-6 on the last end. Hollingbourne beat Island one 7-5, 3G beat East Hanningfield Windmills 9-3 and Stonyhill 1 just managed to beat Woodlands in a tight game 4-3. Both Semi Finals were one sided affairs. Hollingbourne beat 3G 18-8 and Stonyhill 1 beat East Hanningfield Horseshoes (Dave Woods, Paul Cairns and Steve Killington) 14-2. So the two qualifiers from Group D met in the Final where Stonyhill 1 dominated from the start and ran out 12-6 winners. Congratulations to Andrea Phillbrick, Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham

RITA BLACKHALL FUNERAL DETAILS
Rita’s funeral will take place on Monday 10th August at 2pm at Pitsea Crematorium and afterwards at Pitsea Mount Community Hall, Brackendale Avenue, SS13 3BD.
Flowers are optional but are to be sent to 12 Brackendale Avenue, Pitsea, Essex, SS13 3BD. Donations are to be given to the British Heart Foundation. There will be a donation box inside the chapel at the crematorium.
RITA BLACKHALL RIP
It is with great sadness that Rita Blackhall passed away suddenly at home of a suspected heart attack last night (21/7/15). She was a terrific bowler who played for Willow Park before joining Stonyhill. Also playing for Friends of Essex and the Essex county team. She will be sadly missed. Our condolences go to Stewart and her family at this time. Funeral details will be given as soon as possible.

I will not be announcing the league teams until late August. The reason being is that I want to take my time as I have a lot to think about. How players and teams of four played last year, players availability due to ill health. To decide on promoting or demoting players. To change players positions or not due to their capabilities. It is a team game not an individual game and players are expected to play in the position they are selected to, not where they wish to. I would appreciate it as soon as holidays are booked between October 1st 2015 and April 30th 2016 you could let me know straight away as well as any other days that you are not available to play. The above event took place at East Hanningfield where 16 teams took part, being split into 2 groups each having 6 games of 7 ends. Stonyhill were represented by Rita and Stewart Blackhall, Jonathan East and Tony Ealham. There first game was against St. Andrews where they reversed the score line from 2 weeks ago winning 9-5. Things were looking good when they beat Hadleigh Woods which included Dave Chittock 5-3. In the next game they lost to GPCA 8-7 on the last end. They should never have lost this match as they scored a 6 on end 3 to go 7-1 up. They got back to winning ways in their next match easily beating Outwood Common ‘2’ 12-2. They lost the next match to East Hanningfield 6-5 again on the last end, They done well to get back into this match after being 5-1 down then scoring a 4 to go into the last end all square. Their last match was won against Outwood Common ‘1’ 11-3. This left them with a total of 8 points which made them runners up in their group but sixth overall losing out to 3G on shot difference who also finished on 8 points with the top 4 teams finishing on 9 points. 3G, made up of Greg, John, Joan Wade and outsider Michelle Squires lost to Hollingbourne 5-3 in their opening match. They easily won their next three 10-0, 12-2, 10-4 against FOE, St. Andrews and Sanguine respectively. They then lost to Island 7-4 before finishing on a winning note by defeating Essex U18’s 12-2. East Tilbury which was made up of Linda and Roger Munns, Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child had an unusual off day only winning one game against Essex U18’s 5-3 and drawing against Sanguine 3-3. Sanguine who was represented by Teresa Kidd, Brenda Neil, Joan Southon and Pauline Pammant scored a 5 on the last end of the day in their last match against the tournaments runner up, Hollingbourne from Kent helping them to become the eventual winners on shots for.

37 bowlers descended on Torquay representing Friends of Essex to play against players from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall representing the West Country. This was a competition held at Canvey Westwood in memory of Bob Jackson. There were 14 teams taking part who all played 5 matches. There were a number of Stonyhill members involved and the Stonyhill team was represented by Rita and Stewart Blackhall, Jonathan East and Tony Ealham. They got off to a bad start against St.Andrews going 9-0 behind but managed to win the last few ends eventually losing 9-5. Their second game was against a strong four of Alan Jones, Barry Hedges, and Bob Jacksons grand children Aeron and Adam Sultana representing Springhouse. Stonyhill were the eventual winners 9-6. The Third game brought them back down to earth losing 11-2 to East Tilbury where they were completely out bowled and out played. They won their final 2 games against The Founders and Courage 11-3 and 10-6 respectively giving them a total of 6 points. Hadleigh were represented by Andy Phillbrick, Josie Robinson, Brenda Crowe and Dave Chittock. In their first two games they lost to East Tilbury 6-4 and then 7-4 to Island. They came back strongly to win their remaining 3 games 15-6, 7-3 and 6-5 against Courage, West Hanningfield and Canvey also giving them a total of 6 points. East Tilbury were represented by Chris and Dave Crates, Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child. Their matches against Hadleigh and Stonyhill have already been reported on. They lost their second game to 3G 6-4 and also lost to Springhouse 7-4. They comfortably won their last game against St Andrews 10-2 thus also giving them a total of 6 points.3G who were the Wades, Greg, Joan, John and Rob. Of their 4 remaining games they lost 3 winning one. They lost to Woodlands 11-3, The Founders 6-5, Springhouse 10-4 but beat St Andrews 13-1 giving them a total of 4 points. Woodlands were represented by John and Peggy May and Pat and Alan High. As already reported they won their first game against 3G 11-3 and their last game 10-5 against The Founders. They were defeated in the other 3 by St Andrews 10-5, Springhouse 8-4 and Sanguine 8-4 giving them a total of 4 points. Friends Of Essex was made up of Tony Hayes, Adrian Atkinson, Bart and Heather Clements. They managed to win 3 of their games beating Canvey 9-7, Courage 9-2 and Sanguine 11-4. In the other 2 they lost to West Hanningfield 4-3 and Island 7-4 also giving them 6 points. The eventual winners were Springhouse on 8 points who donated their winnings to prostrate cancer. The runners up were East Tilbury on shot difference as a number of teams had 6 points.

CLIFF HERCOCK FINALS DAY-SUNDAY 19th APRIL 2015
The Cliff Hercock finals day was held at Marconi where 16 teams took part. There was a round robin of four groups of four with the winner of each group qualifying for the Knock out stages. Stonyhill Herons were represented by Rita Blackhall, Mark Chittock, Rob Wade and Tony Ealham. In the first game they convincingly beat Woodlands Ash 9-3. In the second game they defeated Galleywood 10-2. All they had to do was draw their last game against Ramsden Ravens to qualify for the semi finals but Stonyhill wouldn’t settle for a draw and ran out convincing winners 9-3, and topping their group with a 100% record. In the semi final they faced a strong Island team and with Alan Jones to bowl his last wood the match was all square and heading for an extra end. Alan had other ideas and took Stonyhills holding wood out to win the match 9-7. Springhouse were the eventual winners beating Island in the Final.

It is with sad regret that Gina Patient has lost her fight to cancer and passed away this morning (7/4/15). She was a founder member of the club who played for the Herons and Friends of Essex and Essex ‘B’ team as well as Stonyhill long mat. She was a terrific bowler and friend who will be sorely missed. As soon as the funeral arrangements have been made they will be posted on this page. We send our best wishes and condolences to her family at this sad time. Rest in peace Gina.

There were many Stonyhill members on show at the above event. Fifteen teams took part where there were 3 groups of five in a round robin and the top two qualified with the best two 3rd places for the knock out stages. Stonyhill were represented by Rita and Stewart Blackhall, Jonathan East and Tony Ealham. In their opening group game they beat Friends Of Essex ( Pat and Alan High, Tony Hayes, Edna Burridge) in a tight game 4-3. In the second game they narrowly lost to Woodlands (Peggy and John May, Nigel and Dominic Read) 8-6 where conceding a four in the penultimate end cost them the game. In the third game they got back to winning ways convincingly beating a strong East Hanningfield team who eventually topped the group 11-4. In their last group game they only needed to draw to finish runners up which they did against 3G (The Wade Family) 6-6. In the Quarter Finals they beat Outwood Common 5-2 to progress to the Semi Final where they came across East Tilbury ( Eileen Smith-Allen, George Christy, Shirley Walker and Pauline Child). East Tilbury stormed into a 4-0 lead but Stonyhill came back to win 6-4. 3G went out at the quarter final stage to Sanguine which contained Brenda Neil 10-4. Sanguine then lost to East Hanningfield in the other semi final 12-5. In the final Stonyhill could not repeat their earlier success against East Hanningfield ( Paul Bax, Tony Orpin, Steve Killington and Craig Burgess) losing 9-7.

COUNTY ‘A’ TEAM INTER COUNTY FINAL 8th MARCH 2015
Congratulations to the Essex County ‘A’ Team for reaching the final of the Inter County Championships. Unfortunately they were beaten by a very strong Devon team 24-16. Throughout the season Essex were very strong and played excellent, easily topping their round robin group containing Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge. In the preliminary round of the knock out stages they drew with Herefordshire 20-20 but went through 2-1 on a sudden death play off. In the Quarter Final Essex comfortably beat Surrey 30-10 and in the Semi Final they beat Somerset 25-15 meaning the ‘A’ team was in the final for the first time since 1999. Congratulations and well done to all players particularly the Stonyhill members of Pauline Child, Rita Blackhall, Greg Wade, Pat Goodchild, Tony Hayes, Eileen Smith-Allen, Dave and Mark Chittock, Michelle Squires, Peggy May and Rob Wade.
HAYLING ISLAND – FEBRUARY 2015
SINGLES: Several players from Stonyhill entered this competition. After the group stages Pauline Child, Eileen Smith -Allen, Pat Goodchild and Tony Ealham and Peggy May all qualified. Unfortunately John May did not qualify to the knock out stages. In the first round of the knock out stages unfortunately Pat and Tony were drawn against each other but Tony was the winner. Eileen was unlucky to be Knocked out at this stage as was Peggy who was beaten by Paul Bax but Pauline progressed further. In the second round Tony came across his nemisis Paul Bax but this was broken as Tony won 12-6. Pauline also went through to the Quarter Final. In the Quarter Final Tony beat Phil Banner and Pauline won a tight game too. Pauline and Tony had to play each other in the semi final where another nemisis was broken and in a very good and tight game Pauline beat Tony for the first time 11-8 meaning Tony has now been knocked out at the Semi Final stage for the last 3 years. Pauline who was in good form all week went on to win the final with an end to spare and successfully defended her title having now won it for the last 2 years. Congratulations to Pauline Child.
PAIRS: In the pairs competition Pauline Child played with Eileen Smith-Allen and Tony Ealham partnered Pat Goodchild. Both sets of pairs won all their group games to top their respective groups. Peggy and John May just failed to qualify. In the first round Pat and Tony won their game but unfortunately Eileen and Pauline lost out to Pam and Bill Frost from Kent. In the Quarter Final Pat/Tony met Sam Lambert and Paul Cairns and at the end it was all square 6-6 so an extra end had to be played where Sam and Paul won with the very last wood. The eventual winners were Steve Killington and Paul Bax and the runners up were Phil and Shirley Banner.

The holiday pairs competition took place last week end where the winners receive vouchers towards any Warmans Holidays. Several members from Stonyhill took part, Rita and Stewart Blackhall, Brenda Neil played with Barry Clarke from Sanguine. John May and Alan High, Roger Munns and George Christy, Eileen Smith-Allen and Pauline Child, Dave Crates playing with his wife Chris of East Tilbury. Tony Hayes and Andrea Philbrick. There were 3 groups of 6 played on a round robin basis with the top 2 going into the main competition and 3rd and 4th position going into the certificate competition. In the Quarter Final stages of the main knock out Rita and Stewart Blackhall were beaten by the eventual winners of the competition Mo Binstead and Alan Kay from Outwood Common. Roger Munns and George Christy also went out at this stage, losing to Paul and Christine Reed from Hadleigh Woods, who eventually finished Runners Up. In the quarter finals of the cerificate competition Dave and Chris Crates lost to Brenda Crowe and Sandra Stanton also from Hadleigh Woods. Pauline Child and Eileen Smith-Allen beat Linda and Sam Lambert from Outwood Common. John May and Alan High also went through to the semi finals after defeating J.Pope and M.Robinson from Gloucester Park. In the Semi Finals Pauline and Eileen beat John and Alan. The final was played between the pairing of Pauline and Eileen and Phil and Shirley Banner from Island. The eventual winners were and congratulations must go to Pauline Child and Eileen Smith-Allen for being fully certified

The runners up were Matt Dillon, Debbie Tomlinson and Sonia from Kent who also won their 5 games but lost out on shot difference.
NATIONAL SINGLES-SUNDAY 4th JANUARY 2015
There were plenty of Stonyhill members competing in a field of 55 players. They were namely Greg Wade, Dave Chittock and Tony Ealham representing Stonyhill. Other players such as George Christy, Pauline Child, Eileen Smith-Allen, Pat Goodchild, John Finn, John and Peggy May all entered representing East Tilbury, Willow Park and Woodlands. There was a round robin to qualify to the knock out stages. In the second round (last 32) Eileen Smith-Allen came up against Shirley Walker (Warren) but unfortunately lost in a tight game. Tony Ealham was also knocked out in a close game to Dave Wooller (Island) by 2 shots. Peggy May beat Colin Addis (Warren) to reach the last 16. In the 3rd round Peggy beat Paul Bax (East Hanningfield) to progress into the Quarter Final. Peggy May secured her spot at the Nationals by beating Shannon Mead (Warren) in a very tight game. It was 6-6 going into the last end with Peggy getting the one she required to march into the Semi Final where she came across Del Coates (Sanguine). Unfortunately Del was in fine form and ran out a convincing winner. Peggy May now plays Jack Shephard (GPCA) for third or fourth place at a later date. Del Coates will play Craig Burgess (East Hanningfield) in the final also to be played at a later date. Well done and congratulations to Peggy May
