The Wainwright Challenge

The EVMC Wainwright Challenge is an idea proposed by Robin Illingworth for club members to ascend the Wainwrights without using a car from the Penrith area. The challenge will run until 31/12/2023 .

One can use buses, trains, steamers or launches, bikes and even horse back as well as shank’s pony. One must start either from Penrith or home if more convenient.

There is a list of the Wainwrights here on this website showing which summits have been ascended – this will be updated from time to time. This will record the dates when a particular summit has been ascended and from that will show which summits have not been ascended. Multiple ascents by different members are recorded accordingly and will be included in the overall tally.

There is also the Facebook page entitled “EVMC Wainwright Challenge” on which details of the walks and ascents are welcome. These details should show –

  • Date of ascent and summits climbed
  • Who participated
  • Details of the transport and route taken
  • Details of any special moments
  • … and importantly – highlight any transport issues to be followed up or passed on to the authorities
  • Also photograph of the ascents are welcome as well.

Please record your ascents on the Facebook page accordingly. Please notify the Club, using the group email, or Ron Kenyon, of all ascents. If necessary Ron can put the details onto the Facebook page if you want.

Now get those timetables out and start planning for the Wainwright Challenge!
