1 Yorkshire Badminton Quarterly Newsletter December 2022 Edition Welcome to the ninth edition of the Yorkshire Badminton newsletter! The interactive newsletter will be produced quarterly throughout the year and will provide the county association, community badminton networks, clubs, coaches, volunteers and players with current news, opportunities, information and support across Yorkshire. About Me I m sure the majority of you have been in contact with me by now but, for anyone who doesn t know, my name is Holly Robson and I have been a keen badminton player, coach and volunteer for a number of years now, representing the Durham County senior teams and Elmfield Badminton Club in Newcastle as well as playing an active role on the Durham County Badminton committee. In May 2018, I joined the Badminton England team as the North East Relationship Manager (covering Durham & Northumberland) then, as a result of the Badminton England staff restructure in November 2020, I am now also the local point of contact for Yorkshire. I work closely with the badminton community across these three counties to further develop badminton and provide more opportunities for people to get involved and grow the sport across the region. Holly Robson North East & Yorkshire Relationship Manager Badminton England Club & Coach Surveys Badminton England have just launched two surveys a Club Survey & a Coach Survey as we want to hear more about your experiences with Badminton England and understand more about the things that matter most to you. In order to support clubs and coaches effectively, we need consistent feedback to ensure we are providing the correct tools, resources and guidance to meet your needs. Please be open an honest with your feedback so we can prioritise the support needed for clubs, volunteers, and the wider badminton community. All Clubs who complete the survey will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win one of the following prizes: 3x Club Affiliation Memberships for the 2023/24 season (starting ) 2x Level 2 Coaching Bursaries worth up to 200 3x 100 equipment vouchers All Coaches who complete the survey will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win one of the following prizes: 5x One year Coach Memberships (valid once current membership expires) 2x Coach Education Bursaries worth up to 200 3x 100 equipment vouchers to complete the Club Survey to complete the Coach Survey

2 Club Spotlight ViveSport Halifax Hawks & Huddersfield Eagles Junior Badminton Clubs Huddersfield Eagles Huddersfield Eagles was established over 50 years ago by local Huddersfield coaches Graham and Linda Howe. During their many years running and coaching the Eagles, they sowed the seeds for most of the players who now play in the Huddersfield Badminton League, many junior and senior Yorkshire players, and also many Junior England players including: Sarah Bok, Paul Trueman, Helen Calverley, and Olympic Medal Winner Marcus Ellis. In 2012, after many, many years Graham & Linda decided the time was right to pass the Eagles baton on, and Ron Mellor and Mike Hall took over the coaching of the club, with help from Helen Calverley. The club continued to go from strength to strength under Mike and Ron s guidance; however the time came for them to also step down from running the club in 2016 and they wanted to pass the baton on to Helen and ViveSport. Since ViveSport have been running Eagles, they have grown and grown! Many current junior county players started their badminton journey at Eagles, and they have three teams in the Huddersfield Badminton League. Currently over 60 juniors enjoy playing badminton at Eagles every week, the youngest member is 4 and the eldest is 17. The club also encourage their players to volunteer as assistant coaches and help them to complete their coaching qualifications if they want to. In fact, the current assistant coaches to Helen, Daniel, Louise and Huria, all began playing at Eagles! The club are looking forward to the future and to keep engaging lots of juniors in badminton! Halifax Hawks After the success of taking over Huddersfield Eagles from Ron, Mike, Graham and Linda, and lots of enquiries about whether they ran a junior badminton club in Halifax, Helen decided to go for it and start Halifax Hawks Junior Badminton Club in 2017! The aim was to replicate Huddersfield Eagles and ensure there was the opportunity for juniors to play badminton in Calderdale. Hawks started off slowly, but with persistence and ensuring everyone had fun and kept improving every week numbers started to improve. They now have 25 players at Hawks every week, and they love it! They constantly are getting new members, purely by word of mouth, and are extremely proud of how Hawks is developing, and how keen and committed the players are. They re really looking forward to seeing how they improve and are also looking forward to seeing some of their players volunteering as assistant coaches in the years to come as they get older. Head Coach, Helen Calverley: 2023 will be a really exciting year for the younger players at Eagles and Hawks as we are looking to develop a junior round robin match system with Eagles, Hawks and our two Lancashire junior badminton clubs Rochdale Ravens and Manchester Falcons. We can t wait to see our younger players at all our junior clubs getting the chance to test themselves against each other!

6 Yorkshire Senior Silver Tournament Write Up The 2022 Yorkshire Senior Silver Tournament was held on Saturday 26 th & Sunday 27 th November at York Railway Institute The tournament had a good entry, spread across a wide variety of counties. The entry to the Women s Singles event was pleasing. Although well below the number of entries in the Men s Singles, there were more women s singles players than in the past. The Men s Singles event was somewhat of a changing of the guard with youngsters Harry Lines (Buckinghamshire) and Max Flynn (Leicestershire) beating Yorkshire players, Jamie Bonsels and Alex Marritt respectively in the semi-finals. Flynn then went on the claim the Men s Singles title. The Women s Singles was also very much a youngsters event. Raye Wan (Nottinghamshire) beat Ashleigh Mok (Cheshire) in the first semi-final with Gemma Atkinson (Surrey) beating Yorkshire s Mia Fox in the second. Fourteen-year-old Raye Wan took the title in a hard fought final which went to three ends. Harry Lines took another title, playing with Ben Jarvis (Derbyshire) in the Men s Doubles. They beat Jamie Pearcy (Gloucestershire) and Yorkshire s Mark Pratt in the semi-final. Nick Hodgson (Lancashire) and Ben Wheatley (Nottinghamshire) took the other semi-final against Norfolk s Feng Hong and James Salter but couldn t match Lines and Jarvis in the final. Yorkshire was well represented in the Women s Doubles as Vivian Cheng (Lancashire) played with Cici Lu (Yorkshire), putting out Sri Anantha (Warwickshire) and Dorsa Yavanivafa (Worcestershire) in the semi-final. Abby Downing (Derbyshire) and Natasha Lado (Hampshire) won the other semi-final against the Yorkshire pair of Yu-Chieh Chen and Yinija Zhu. Downing and Lado took the title, beating Cheng and Lu in a very tight final. There was compensation in the Mixed Doubles for Cici Lu when she won the title with Philip Pahatouridis (Northumberland). They beat Shane Wilson and Raye Wann (Nottinghamshire) in their semi-final. The other semi-final was won by Harry Goode (Hertfordshire) and Natasha Lado (Hampshire) against Yorkshire pair Tom Summers and Emily Arksey.
