Redmond High School Student Completes FBI Leadership Program
REDMOND, WA - The Washington State Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. (FBINAA) selected a Redmond High School (RHS) student to represent Washington during the Youth Leadership Program at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, from June 22 through June 30.
RHS Junior Yuwan Luo was selected out of 20 applicants in Washington. She demonstrates diverse community involvement and volunteering while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Luo is a Redmond Police Explorer, has served as a member of the Redmond Youth Partnership Advisory Committee, is a Community Emergency Response Team volunteer, and is a member of the varsity badminton team, Rotary Interact Club, and National Art Honors Society. She achieved academic and physical fitness awards from the Washington Law Enforcement Exploring Advisors.
A total of 57 students from the United States and five international students participated in the program designed for future leaders. Students were selected from a rigorous process representing 44 North American Chapters, the FBINAA Latin American and European Chapter, the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI LEEDA), and the Society of Former Special Agents.
Redmond Police Captain Tim Gately currently serves as the national coordinator for the Youth Leadership Program.
“The students who are selected to attend the program are already the top in their class. Within our intense environment at Quantico, we push them even harder to forge new mindsets, set higher goals, achieve through adversity, and rise to mental, academic, and physical challenges that will enable them to become the best version of themselves,” Captain Gately said.
Students studied leadership, ethics, values and choices, ethical decision-making, accountability, social media, and financial responsibility. They also traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit museums and memorials, including Arlington National Ceremony. The program concluded with a three-mile “Yellow Brick Road” physical fitness challenge and graduation ceremony.
The first FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership program was in 1998. More than 1,000 students have completed the program. FBINAA hosts the leadership program in cooperation with the FBI National Academy, Society of Former Special Agents, and FBI LEEDA.
“The students leave this program with a deep understanding of self, community, and the responsibility of leadership, both now and for their futures,” Captain Gately said. “The Youth Leadership Program expects a lot of the students. In turn, we expect students to rise to the future leadership challenges facing our world and communities.”
