Builth Wells proved too strong for Bridgend Athletic in the National Youth Cup Final

Builth Wells underlined their status as the outstanding Youth team in Wales as they completed their unbeaten season with an over-whelming 44-17 victory against Bridgend Athletic in the WRU National Youth Cup final at Principality Stadium.

At the heart of it was a four try salvo from right wing Ciaran Price, who left the Bridgend Athletic defenders trailing in his wake almost every time he got the ball. There were three other tries in their ‘Magnificent Seven’ as they won 44-17 at the home of Welsh rugby.

The game got off to a nervy start with a knock on from the kick-off and then a dropped pass. But once the young Bulls got into their stride there was simply no stopping them.

Price showed off his pace to bag his first try with a 50 metre sprint to the line after a great counterattack from their own 22 by Builth. Outside half Rhys Davies added the extras off the right touchline.

The Athletic hit back with a try of their own from James Puaca and did their best to keep pace with their unbeaten rivals. They created plenty of half-breaks but just weren’t able to turn them into points.

A Davies penalty increased the Builth lead before one of the players of the season for the Bulls, centre Alecs Williams carved his way through the middle to cross for a scintillating try that Davies improved to create a 12 point gap.

From there on the lead continued to build as Price completed his hat-trick to make it 27-5 at the break. The second half started with another brilliant solo effort from Builth, this time No 8 Iwan Coyle displaying a full range of skills.

The seventh try came from replacement wing Morgan Price and Davies ended with three conversions and a penalty to complete the job and put the final seal of approval on a never to be forgotten season at the mid Wales club.

To their credit, Bridgend Athletic had the final word when livewire scrum half Evan Dadamo crossed for a consolation effort.

Scorers: Bridgend Athletic: Tries: James Puaca, Luke Griffiths, Evan Dadamo; Con:  Evan Dadamo.  Builth Wells: Tries: Ciaran Price 4, Alecs Williams, Iwan Coyle, Morgan Price; Cons: Rhys Davies 3; Pen: Rhys Davies
