Adult tournaments

It was great to see a mixture of adults and juniors competing in the annual Club singles tournament on Sunday 8 March. Everyone had at least 7 games and felt satisfied they had a good run around by the end!

The Men’s, Ladies and Mixed doubles tournaments where scheduled for early May, this has been postponed for the time being and am hoping we will be able to get these played at some point later in the year.

These are played on weekday evenings and I am hoping some of the older stronger players can be encouraged to enter again when a new date has been set!

In some ways, badminton has been fortunate, as our season runs from Sept-April, most of the matches and tournaments had been played before the Government instructed us all to “stay at home”.

An exception to this is the Jubilee Tournament, which has always been run in May - the good news is that the organisers have promised to return next year.

Coronavirus

Just prior to lockdown, we were treated to some fabulous badminton when the best players in the world competed in the world’s oldest and most prestigious tournament – the All England, held at the NIA in Birmingham.  You can catch the highlights on the following YouTube channel:

The better weather is now here, so as well as “staying at home” why not try “playing at home”?

If you don’t have a net, may be you could improvise with a bit of rope or a washing line, and then encourage the rest of your household to join in!!

Also don’t forget that skipping is a very good for fitness and for badminton footwork – we need to have fast, light feet to help us move around the court efficiently.  So find those ropes, and get everyone skipping if you can.
