Deathrow

Since storming into Celtic Wrestling in the autumn of 2006, Deathrow has waved a path of destruction that few men have come close to in the promotion. After wiping out Tyler Browne, Rockin’ Ryan Lewis and countless others, the masked behemoth from Parts Unknown was the sole surviving wrestler at the company’s first ‘Total Elimination’ event, outlasting around nineteen other men that night including several Celtic Wrestling champions. A spell under the management of Guidance followed, yet Deathrow proved too uncontrollable for even this master manipulator, and the two soon parted ways.

Deathrow’s undefeated streak continued, however, with nobody proving to be a match for him, and in January 2008 at ‘Anger Management’, he became part of ‘The Instruments Of Destruction’ with T-Bone and former Celtic Wrestling star Justin Johnson, under the management of ‘Gentleman’ Gilligan Gordon. Incidentally, Gordon has so far been the only man to gain control over the masked behemoth, by use of a supposed family heirloom previously owned by one of Deathrow’s relations. After the surprise win by referee Ashley Cox over ‘Sweet Sugar’ Steve Bassey in an impromptu Interactive championship match at ‘Anger Management’, Deathrow was named number one contender for the title. While unlikely title holder Cox avoided a confrontation with the big man at ‘Crowning The King’ in February due to unforeseen circumstances, his luck ran out when Deathrow destroyed him a month later at ‘Surprise! Surprise!’ and claimed the championship. Deathrow’s reign as champion was short lived, though, as he lost the Interactive title in May to Thomas Bassey in a brutal ‘ten thousand thumbtacks’ match at ‘Spring Loaded’, which in turn ended his undefeated run. A further singles loss occured at ‘The Big Bang 4’ against Tyler Browne, which in turn led to the end of ‘The Instruments Of Destruction’ at ‘Mental Breakdown’ two months later, after his former stablemate T-Bone left the fold.

A change of heart came over the masked man following the above, for after losing a three-on-two handicap match at ‘Crowning The King’ in February 2009, he turned on his temporary partners Method And Madness in the aftermath, not only earning the respect of the fans in attendance but also that of former foe El Psycho, a member of the opposing team. However, ‘Madness’ Nick Scouse and ‘Cowboy’ Jesse Gilbert gained a measure of revenge against the behemoth and his partner ‘Sure Shot’ Eddie Lizzard at ‘Hard Labour’ in April, which in turn began a feud for Deathrow against ‘The Evil Genius’ Jonathan James. The masked man tasted victory again with a win over former Celtic Wrestling star Matt Vaughn at ‘Spring Loaded’ the following month, but suffered another defeat one night later in a rematch with Vaughn at ‘Surprise! Surprise!’, partially due to interference by James.

Deathrow returned in July at ‘Summer Heat’ with vengeance in mind, almost managing to deliver a chokeslam on Jonathan who escaped by the skin of his teeth, and although he was victorious over ‘Sweet Sugar’ Steve Bassey at ‘Celtic Carnage’ in August, winning by countout wasn’t his intention. September saw Deathrow team with Chris Recall at ‘Highway To Hell’, but despite getting his hands on Sugar once more, his effort to help Recall win the Heavyweight championship from Thomas Bassey fell short. His feud with Steve Bassey continued two months later, with victories at both ‘Celtic Wreckage’ and ‘Celtic Havoc’, and these were complimented by defeating both Steve and Jonathan James at ‘The Big Bang 5’ in a two-on-one handicap match.

2010 began for the masked behemoth in February at ‘Celtic Rampage’ with a challenge for the then vacant Interactive championship, but although he fought hard against his opponent Tyler Browne, it was Tyler who claimed the gold. A month later, however, Deathrow scored another victory over T-Bone at ‘Celtic Bedlam’, and the wins continued at ‘Summer Crunch’ in August against Titan. Seven months later at ‘New Dawn’, it was Titan who gained revenge in a rematch, but Deathrow bounced back with a victory over the unpredictable Mad Man Manson at ‘C/W Live! : Cancer Aid’, and a teaming with ‘Madness’ Nick Scouse at ‘C/W Live! : Ebbw Vale’ brought him further success over Titan and ‘Cowboy’ Jesse Gilbert.

Fifteen months passed, and Deathrow returned to Celtic Wrestling at ‘Crowning The Kings’.  Entered into an eight man tournament to crown new Heavyweight, Interactive and Tag Team champions, he destroyed his first round opponent ‘Dynamite’ Danny Owens in the first round, whereby he became the last man standing in the four man elimination main event, winning the Heavyweight championship and in turn joining a powerful new faction named The Goss Dynasty.  However, the runner-up ‘Flying’ Mike Bird was looking for vengeance, and in a hard fought contest at ‘Highway To Hell 2’ almost a month later, Deathrow came up short and lost the title.  As a result, the masked monster became frustrated, realising in the end that The Goss Dynasty had taken him on the wrong path.  In a shocking fashion, he completely turned his back on the hated faction at ‘The Big Bang 6’ in November, teaming with former foe ‘Dynamite’ Danny Owens against Jesse Gilbert and ‘Mister Reem’ Scotty Essex for the now vacant Tag Team championship.  His power shone through, with he and Owens winning the title, and in turn the behemoth made more Celtic Wrestling history by becoming the sixth Grand Slam winner in the process.

It’s going to be interesting to see how much further he can take his career, but as has been documented, Deathrow has left a trail of unfortunate victims in Celtic Wrestling so far, and there’s no doubt that the masked man from Parts Unknown will continue to do so.
