Cheer Honored by Riverside City Council

| By:
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — When it comes to the cheerleading world, California Baptist University is a well-known name. The Lancers have won the National Cheerleaders Association All-Girls Division II Championship for four-straight years and have a chance this spring to make it an unprecedented five times.

That recognition has started to spill outside the cheerleading world and Tuesday night, the Lancers were honored at the Riverside City Council. Even Mayor Rusty Bailey joked it was starting to become tradition since he keeps inviting the Lancers out each year after they win.

Back in April, CBU pulled out a close decision in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the NCA championship and showed the Council footage from that winning performance. It was the first time for a Division II team (co-ed or all-girl) to win four consecutive crowns.

Coach Tami Fleming spoke to the councilmembers about her current team and some new additions, both new recruits and a new assistant coach in Brandon Seagondollar. The councilmembers were impressed with the Lancers' team GPA last year (3.29) and wished CBU well as it prepares for nationals again this year.

Fans can still catch the Lancers at the City Council meeting, even if they weren't there for the event Tuesday night. Every Wednesday night at 9 p.m., Fridays at 1:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m., the City Council meeting is rebroadcast on television (AT&T Channel 99, Charter Spectrum Channel 3 and Frontier Cable Channel 21).
