A women’s rugby team based in Senghenydd is eyeing up their second promotion in as many years as they begin just their second competitive season.
Formed in 2013, Senghenydd Sirens WRFC were promoted to Women’s Division 2 last season – their first full season as a team.
Their first match against Gorseinon on September 6 was abandoned due to a serious injury to one of the opposition players – with the Sirens ahead 17-12.
They are now looking ahead to their first home game of the league against Haverfordwest on September 27.
Flanker Sarah Harvey said: “Senghenydd Sirens WRFC was formed in 2013 with a few local girls hoping to bring a team together within the community.
“Since then it has grown larger with a lot more players, most of whom are from Senghenydd, or have some sort of connection within the Aber Valley.
“We called ourselves the Sirens in memory of the 439 miners that lost their lives in the 1913 pit disaster when the siren sounded through the village to alert people what had happened in the pit.
“It also happens to coincide with the fact that a Siren represents a woman who is beautiful and dangerous.”
She explained that they finished third in Division 3 last year and secured promotion to the tougher Division 2.
Harvey said: “We couldn’t have done this without our coach Dany Johnson. He gives up his spare time three times a week to help us become the team we are. He has the patience of a saint when it comes to dealing with us.”
The club are always welcoming new players and train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.45pm to 6.45pm at Senghenydd RFC.
They are also looking for sponsorship to help towards the cost of kit and team wear.
Their game against Haverforwest kicks off at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 27, at Senghenydd RFC.
