Got a grading coming up? You’ll find information on what to expect here.
Your grading will consist of the following:
- Kihon, also known as Basics. This comprises combinations of punches, blocks and kicks with kiai on the final move
- Kata. This is a specific combination of positions and movements with defined kiai points; think of it as sparring with invisible opponents
- Kumite. This is sparring with a partner, initially using pre-defined combinations
Details of upcoming and past gradings can be found in our Articles.
Kyu Grades
The Kyu grades are all the grades before the coveted black belt.
Kyu gradings are held every three months in Perth and are preceded by courses with Kawasoe Sensei, JKAWF Chief Instructor. The first course is for all ages and levels; the second course is for adults and higher grades.
One or both courses can be attended whether grading or not, and are highly recommended.
Dan Grades
The Dan grades are all black belt gradings.
Dan gradings are held twice a year at the 3-day Summer Camps (Windsor in April and Edinburgh in August). Graders must attend a minimum of 2 days of the camp.
The camps also offer the chance to take Refereeing and Instructor Qualification Exams.
