On a balmy Easter Monday, Prime Minister the Rt. Honourable Perry G. Christie officially welcomed Bahamasair, the National flag carrier of The Bahamas, back to Mayaguana as the airline resumed regularly scheduled flights into that southern island after a five year absence. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Transport and Aviation Minister, Glenys Hanna Martin and Agriculture, Marine Resources and Local Government Minister, the Hon. V. Alfred Gray who is also the area’s MP.

Mr. Christie reminded those in attendance that during his previous administration, his Government welcomed the I-Group, a business consortium out of Boston USA and their interests in a major resort investment for Mayaguana. Included in the group’s projections were modern upgrades to the airport and the provision of potable water in addition to its mixed use resort development. This one of a kind development promised to transform the economy of Mayaguana.

After leaving office in 2007, the joint venture agreement was dismantled and the then government sold thousands of acres of land to the I-Group fee simple. The airport’s runway became overgrown with brush and languished in a state of disrepair for more than five years. Bahamas suspended air service there for safety reasons.

With the completion of the newly refurbished runway with emergency solar lights, the government has turned its attention to upgrading the terminal building with a projected completion date of around September 2014. Additionally, the roads are being repaved and potable water is on tap for that island.
