Restaurants serving pizza, seafood, pancakes, and chicken sandwiches are slated to open at Westside Paper, a 70-year-old industrial warehouse complex comprising 15 acres currently under redevelopment across from King Plow Arts Center and adjacent to Puritan Mill. The site was once part of the old Mead Westvaco paper plant.

New locations of takeout window Glide Pizza, chef Anne Quatrano’s Ponce City Market restaurant Pancake Social, chef Richard Tang’s Girl Diver, and the first Georgia location of Boxcar Betty’s open in 2022 at the West Marietta Street development. The property is located just off of a future Beltline spur near the Westside Beltline Connector and recently opened Westside Quarry Park.

Upon completion, the Westside Paper complex will include a mix of renovated 1950s warehouses and new buildings on the property featuring offices, retail shops, and restaurants. A representative for Westside Paper tells Eater that in addition to the aforementioned restaurants, three to four more food and beverage establishments are likely to open there over the coming year.

First opened in 2020 as a takeout window inside Irwin Street Market in the Old Fourth Ward, Westside Paper becomes the third Atlanta location of Glide Pizza. Owner Rob Birdsong plans to open a second walk-up window inside Inner Voice Brewing in Decatur early next year. Known for its Brooklyn-style pies and slices, Birdsong tells Eater the counter-service restaurant will feature six to eight bar stools inside and offer limited delivery via electric bicycle. Birdsong says he also hopes people will grab to-go slices and pizzas and take advantage of seating areas throughout Westside Paper, too.

Pancake Social

A second location of all-day breakfast restaurant Pancake Social opens next spring at Westside Paper. First opened in 2019 at Ponce City Market, Quatrano partnered with restaurateurs Dan Jacobson (formerly of Chick-fil-A) and Steven Chan (Tin Drum Asian Kitchen) and Tony Riffel (co-founder of Octane) in the restaurant. The menu features a variety of sweet and savory pancakes, bowls, sandwiches, coffee, and fresh-pressed juices. A location of Pancake Social was to open at Town Centre at Trilith (formerly Pinewood Forest) in Fayetteville. However, the restaurant is no longer listed on the Trilith community website.

Girl Diver, the seafood restaurant and bar from Char Korean Bar and Grill owner chef Richard Tang, opened at the Madison Yards in Reynoldstown in 2020. The restaurant specializes in Southeast Asian-meets Cajun fare in its seafood-by-the pound dishes and shareable party platters. The name pays tribute to the 2,000-year-old tradition of Japanese and Korean women free divers known as ama and haenyeo (sea woman) who collect pearls, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and abalone from the bottom of the ocean.

Westside Paper marks the first location of Boxcar Betty’s to open in Georgia. The restaurant, with locations in Charleston, Charlotte, and Chicago, serves build-your-own chicken sandwiches, salads, and plates paired with sides like fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, and sweet potato fries. Boxcar Betty’s also serves a chicken biscuit for breakfast and pecan pie-in-a-cup for dessert.

Westside Paper is one of a handful of former industrial and warehouse property renovations taking shape throughout Atlanta’s west side, including the 80-acre redevelopment of the Works and Chattahoochee Food Works in Underwood Hills, Echo Street West at Northside and Donald Lee Hollowell, and Star Metals on Howell Mill Road, a site once home to Star Iron and Metal scrap yard. King Plow and Westside Provisions District were two of the first large-scale, adaptive-reuse projects to emerge in Atlanta’s northwest neighborhoods.
