A VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this afternoon for our game against Dewsbury Celtic in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two. We welcome the players, supporters and committee of St Judes to Woolston and hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today. We welcome the players, supporters and committee of Celtic to Woolston and hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today. We have managed to get back on track over the past two weeks with hard fought wins over Saddleworth Rangers and Milford but today will no doubt provide us with a sterner test as Celtic lie just behind us in fifth place, two points adrift. The game at Dewsbury at the end of March was very hard fought and we managed to sneak over the line in that one so I am certain that today will be a great spectacle for everybody who is down watching. Our NWML side suffered a narrow 21-16 home defeat to Ashton Bears ‘A’ last Saturday in their first outing for four weeks. They were unlucky to not get anything out of the game; hopefully they can get a win up in Barrow this afternoon where they are playing Hindpool. Next Friday sees a Chubby Brown Tribute Night taking place at Tetley Walker Sports & Social Club, Long Lane, Orford, Warrington. Gary Gobstopper will be entertaining everybody; he is fantastic and the only Chubby Brown Tribute Act that is endorsed by Chubby himself. Tickets are priced at just £7.50 and are going fast. If you would like to go please contact Billy Sheen on 07929 366445 or Mal Holt on 07772 805420. There is a poster advertising the event in today’s programme. Please come along if you can and support this Open Age fundraiser. Last Sunday saw our Under 13s and Under 15s Greens win their North West Counties Cup Semi Finals, while our Under 16s team (Blackbrook/Woolston merged side) won their Lancashire Cup Semi Final. Congratulations to all three teams and we look forward to supporting you in your Finals. Once the dates are confirmed we will publish them on our club Social Media platforms as well as in our NCL programme. Also, in the programme you can find the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow; there are eleven games at home so plenty to choose from! We have lots of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them your support. WOOLSTON ROVERS 26 SADDLEWORTH RANGERS 14 IMPACT PERFORMANCE NCL – DIVISION TWO – 01/07/2023 Woolston Rovers returned to winning ways when they defeated Saddleworth Rangers in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two at The Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club. Rovers opened the scoring after seven minutes with a try from loose forward Harry Files that was converted by scrum half Ben Dixon but then just after the midway point of the half Saddleworth replied when hooker Billy England crossed for a try. Stand off Matt Whitehead added the conversion to level matters. The visitors took the lead for the first time six minutes later when Whitehead forced his way over from close range but then three minutes before the break Rovers full back Joe Roper got on the end of a flowing passing movement to score on the left. Dixon added the conversion to give Rovers a slender 12-10 half time advantage. Three minutes into the second half the elusive Whitehead went over for his second try to put his side back ahead but then eight minutes later Rovers substitute Sean Boyle burrowed over from dummy half to put the home side back into the lead. Just after the hour mark quick hands by Rovers saw the ball find winger James Tarpey, now playing at full back, linking into the line and he combined with centre Dan Fearnley to put winger Alex Pendlebury over wide out on the right to put Woolston six points ahead. As the game entered the final five minutes Rovers had stand off Ryan Brown sin binned for a shoulder charge and then a minute from time Saddleworth scrum half Steven Nield was yellow carded for a professional foul and from the resulting penalty Rovers hooker Adam Files went on his own to score on the left. Woolston Rovers ‘A’ put in a much-improved performance from the display last week before succumbing to defeat at high-flying Golborne Parkside in the NWML Division Two. Rovers scored tries through prop forward Tom Fagan and scrum half Chris Forster with Forster adding one conversion. The second half was a similar tale with Rovers having plenty of opportunities but some strong defence from Golborne kept them at bay for the large part and it was the Parksiders who were able to run out 42-16 victors. Woolston Rovers secured a very narrow victory over an excellent Rylands Sharks side in a monumental Carlsberg Cup Semi-Final that could have gone either way at Monks Sports Club on Tuesday evening. Both sides contributed superbly to a great spectacle that swung back and forth throughout but in the end it was a late penalty for Rovers that saw them gain a hard fought win to put them into the final against Culcheth Eagles on Wednesday 28th August at Rylands. After a tight opening it was Rovers who took the lead on thirteen minutes when a long ball from stand off Billy Maunder found the floor but winger Christian Taylor was quickest to react and he collected and went over from close range on the right. Hooker Daniel O’Brien converted but then three minutes later a penalty to Rylands on the Rovers line saw prop forward Jack Sherratt power over at the side of the posts. Scrum half Peter Leonard added the conversion. Rylands took the lead on twenty five minute when back-to-back penalties put them close to the Rovers line and a lovely shot ball from hooker Adam Coley found prop forward Robert Campbell and he used his size to barge over at the side of the posts. Leonard converted but then it was Rovers turn to hit back nine minutes later when a great cross field run by substitute Mark Robinson saw him evade four defenders and he found Maunder who slipped the ball back inside to second row Sean Conway and he scored at the side of the posts. O’Brien added the conversion. Straight from the restart a strong initial break from substitute Mike Rosson that was carried on by Taylor put Rovers into Sharks territory and after a fine run by Conway his offload bounced off Maunder and into the hands of Robinson who scored on the right to make the half time score 16-12 in Rovers favour. Five minutes into the second half Rylands were awarded a penalty close to the Rovers line and the impressive Campbell forced his way over on the right with four defenders in attendance. Leonard goaled to nudge his side back in front but almost immediately Rovers responded when they were awarded a penalty deep in the Sharks half and Maunder fed centre Ryan Jones and he managed to ground the ball over the line wide out on the right. seized upon by Rovers and a fine ball from Conway put fellow second row Paul Alcock over on the right. O’Brien converted to level the scores yet again and then eight minutes from time Rylands were found guilty of leading with the elbow and O’Brien coolly slotted over a long range penalty to give Rovers a very hard fought 28-26 success.
