Dear Roger

In the 1866 cricket season, W G Grace celebrated his 18th birthday, and scored 224 for the All-England XI v Surrey.

Did you know that he also won the 440 yard hurdles at the inaugural National Olympian Games (the forerunner of the modern Olympic Games)?

Queen Victoria was only 29 years into her 64 year reign as Queen of England.

….  and Addiscombe Cricket Club was formed.

The 2016 cricket season therefore sees the 150th anniversary of one of most prominent cricket clubs in the south of England, and we would like to see as many former members as possible visiting the historic ground at Sandilands – a facility which was left in Trust to the club thanks the generosity of Col. H.E. (Joe) Peirce, who had purchased the ground in 1952.

Here is a list of events and dates for this momentous season:

Pre-season gathering (Friday 6th May):

The evening before the first Championship league game, why not come up to meet the current crop of players who will take on the best of Surrey? No need to book – just come up from 7.30pm onwards. There will be a nominal charge to cover costs, and food will be provided.

Old Boy’s lunch (Saturday 18th June):

Chris Whitehouse has this all under control – the 1st XI will be playing against Trinity Midwhitgiftians. All former players are welcome, and Chris has already had a good response from former players spanning SEVEN decades. Festivities start from midday – if you would like to attend, contact Chris by email:  cdiwhi...@gmail.com

Addiscombe v Surrey Masters (Sunday 17th July):

The Surrey Masters – legends from the county side will be at Addiscombe for a 20/20 match starting at 2pm. Brian Carter has tied this one up – thanks Brian!

Mini Cricket Week: (27th – 29th July):

As in previous years, I am organising the Old Boys game for Thursday 28th July. This will be an all-day game, interspersed with reminiscences, the odd glass of port (provided by me) and several beers.  Please let me know on iha...@wset.co.uk if you would like to play.

Friday 29th July is President’s Day, when the Club take on the Paralytics at Sandilands.

For Wednesday 27th July – watch this space!

Addiscombe Golf Day (Thursday 18th August):

This will take place at Croham Hurst Golf Club, which has such a long association with Addiscombe. Cost will be around £50 for 18 holes of golf (tee-off around 2pm) followed by dinner. Seasoned golfers, novice golfers and non-players (caddies?) are very welcome.  Please register your interest with me: iha...@wset.co.uk

Addiscombe v Cross Arrows at Lords – (Monday 12th September)

Thanks to ‘Wild’ Ian Turner, Addiscombe will play on the Nursery ground at the home of cricket. It is to be played on a Monday, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the current 1st XI, and there is bound to be a good crowd from the Addiscombe faithful.

I will touch at regular intervals throughout the 2016, but please:

-          Put these dates in your diary

-          Contact me to let us know if you can attend

-          Send me scanned photos (hi-res please) of any Addiscombe teams or matches

-          SPREAD THE WORD! (and let me have contact details of your former team-mates)

I look forward to seeing you during the season,

Cheers

Ian Harris (ACC player 1968 to 1993, and the odd occasion since then…….)
