WELCOME TO

YORK CRICKET CLUB

EST., 1977 TORONTO, ONTARIO , CANADA

ABOUT US

Founded in 1977, the York Cricket Club has been the weekend home to a commited and social band of Canadian cricketers who learned the game in schools and cricket clubs in all corners of the world.

Dedicated to the amateur spirit of the game, the club membership consists of a broad age group, some young players developing their skills, some older players re-living their glorious flannelled days past, all sharing the desire to play cricket in a spirited but convivial environment.

The home of York CC is the splendid green valley that is the Glendon College cricket ground. This pitch has been graced by many famous Test cricketers over the years and forms the pastoral setting within the city for the friendly encounters between York CC and the teams we invite to play limited-overs matches each summer weekend.

Celebrating the traditional values of the game, the club encourages sportsmanship, camaraderie and an appreciation of those endangered aspects of the game of cricket that enlarge and augment the lives of members on and off the field.

York Cricket Club has a long and proud history dating way back to 1977. The club has produced champion league players at both the local and national levels.

PRESIDENT

ROHAN
VANIGASOORIYAR

Rohan assumed the role of President after David Hensley who held office for over 10 years stepped down in 2019.  Rohan’s outstanding ability as bowler, batsman, wicket-keeper and slip fieldsman, had resulted in his Captaining York the 7 years prior to being appointed President.  He clearly places himself near the top of the long and impressive list of renowned players who have appeared for the club in its almost fifty- year history. Ro’s elevation to captain and later as President was therefore not surprising. Rohan’s dedication and loyalty towards the club, continues as he has, since he joined York.

SECRETARY

RANJITH
MUHANDIRAM

Ranjith’s affability and good-nature make him one of York’s most popular fixtures at every game. His natural calmness and geniality are most often evidenced when behind the stumps, where he tends to precede any appeals with an apology. Ranjith’s sense of justice and honesty is unwavering. He always brings a calming nature as he diligently fulfills his role as Secretary. Ranjith’s conflict resolution skills have also proved to be extremely handy, particularly at committee discussions. As a senior member of the club, he continues to contribute in many ways towards the success of York.

TREASURER

ATULAN
NAVARATNAM

As the overseer of all things financial, Atulan keeps the pencil razor-sharp in his ongoing efforts to ensure York’s coffers remain in the black. Atu’s management of finances has been nothing short of excellent. His reports always simple, extremely clear and easy to understand. He has brought in new processes that have made it easy for the club to receive and disburse funds. Atu is always exploring opportunities of fund raising and pushing members to be active in that area. He has also brought in a sense of clear and reasonable judgement at a committee level that has resulted in better decision making on issues. York is fortunate to have Atu in charge of this important role of managing finances.

CAPTAIN

RAFI
MOHAMED

This talisman of York has been actively playing for the club for over a quarter of a century, with the majority of this time in the capacity of skipper. After coming to York from a long and successful cricket career in the Toronto and District league, Jay’s ability as a player along with the leadership qualities he showed resulted in him being appointed Captain in just his second year with the club (1999). That stint lasted 13 years before he stepped down, only to be back as Captain again in 2020. As we start the 2024 season York stands out as probably the best place to play friendly cricket in all of Toronto, largely a result of Jay’s commitment, discipline and loyalty towards the club. Jay stepped down as Captain at the end of the 2023 season, with a record of all his 17 years as Captain being winning seasons. He will continue holding office as fixtures Secretary, a roll he also held while Captaining York.

York CC welcomes the 2024 season with newly-elected Rafi at the helm.  Rafi had previously played for the club for a number of years before moving on to contribute with his outstanding abilities as a Cricketer towards competition at a league level. Fortunately however, Rafi was successfully lured back into coming back to York a couple of years ago. His contribution, both on and off the field towards the club over all the years he has been at York, has been outstanding. His capabilities as a player, people skills along with organizing skills have stood out and given members the confidence that he is the first choice in taking over the Captaincy in 2024. All members of the York family look forward to an exciting new era under Rafi’s leadership and direction.

SOCIAL SECRETARY

STEFAN
GRAY

The position of Social Secretary is a critical role within the club as we promote ourselves not just as a Cricket club but also a social club where the involvement of family is paramount. Fortunately for York, Stefan assumes his position with the utmost enthusiasm. One of his strong attributes is the ability to organize events that cater to all. He is always eager as well as willing and able to come up with an event. The social activities of York are in good hands with Stefan, a senior member who is always there when needed to help with any club related activities.
