Sad News - Ron Snow (Added 6 October 2023) - Expired (6 November 2023)
It is with great sadness that we heard last week that our dear friend and colleague Ron Snow had passed away at the age of 87.

Ron was a stalwart of Surrey badminton for nearly 30 years. He first joined our Council in 1994, and was secretary of the Association from 1995 until 2007. Ron was elected as a Vice-President in 2007, and in 2011 he was elected as President, a post he held with distinction until 2019. Again in 2007 Ron also became Surrey's Auditor. Besides Council, he also served on other Surrey committees, notably the Masters Committee and the Strategy, Finance and General Purposes Committee.

At National level Ron worked for the Badminton England Masters Policy Group for nearly ten seasons. He was tasked with managing the Masters inter-County Championships which started with a single rule in 1998 that feather shuttles should be used. He worked comprehensively to fill that void, to such a degree that the current Regulations run to around 5 pages. He became known to his friends as 'Regulation Ron', and he reminded us recently that this was because he was a stickler for the rules. Those Rules are a constant reminder of his most valuable work for that Group. Ron also found time to become an umpire, working with the Badminton Umpires Association of England.

In season 2007/08 Ron was honoured to receive the English Badminton Award, which was instituted to recognise long standing exceptional service to badminton in England.

A true gentleman of the sport, who will be most sadly missed by his wife Pauline and all his family and friends. Our thoughts are with them all. RIP Ron.

Ron's funeral will be at 12.30pm on Friday 20 October at Randall's Park Crematorium, Leatherhead. If you are attending, please let Richard Wellington know so he can pass the information on to the family.

Masters Team Tournament (Added 10 September 2023) - Expired (10 October 2023)
Docs\WeNeedBotox.jpg The annual Surrey County BA Masters Teams Tournament took place at Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club once again during the August Bank Holiday weekend. We had entries from 10 teams, and a good number of new players of differing standards taking part. Once again, Nick Ponting's team (We need Botox) won the trophy. We had a delicious BBQ on Saturday evening and play resumed on Sunday morning. There was a really good atmosphere throughout the whole event with friendly and competitive rivalry, and I think everyone got plenty of badminton. I'm sure there were some aching muscles on Monday...!!

Mental Health First Aid (Added 24 May 2023) - Expired (31 July 2023)
At Active Surrey, we recognise the importance of promoting mental health and wellbeing within the sporting community. We firmly believe that mental health should be a top priority for athletes, coaches, and volunteers alike. To support this vision, we are thrilled to announce that we are now offering free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England training to all sports clubs in Surrey. Access to MHFA training will be allocated on a first come, first served basis during this pilot project.

Mental Health First Aid training equips individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to recognize and respond to mental health challenges. By training club volunteers and coaches as Mental Health First Aiders, we aim to foster a supportive and inclusive environment within sports clubs, where individuals feel comfortable seeking help and receiving the necessary support.

The are loads of benefits to having club volunteers and coaches trained as Mental Health First Aiders. Firstly, it enhances the overall wellbeing of your members, creating an atmosphere where mental health concerns are acknowledged and addressed promptly. When coaches and volunteers are equipped with the tools to identify signs of distress, they can provide immediate assistance, offer reassurance, and guide individuals towards appropriate professional help.

Secondly, having Mental Health First Aiders within your club can contribute to reducing stigma surrounding mental health. Their presence sends a powerful message that mental health matters and is a legitimate concern in the sporting and local community. This proactive approach not only supports individuals but also helps to create a culture of empathy, understanding, and resilience throughout the club which can be used as an opportunity to interact with the local community surrounding the club and enhancing the clubs standing and membership.

Moreover, the MHFA training we provide goes beyond immediate crisis response. It covers a range of topics, including self-care, promoting good mental health, and signposting to additional resources. This comprehensive training empowers Mental Health First Aiders to provide ongoing support and to contribute to the overall mental wellbeing of club members.

I invite you to consider this opportunity for your sports club to participate in our free Mental Health First Aid training program. By taking advantage of this offer, you are investing in the wellbeing of your athletes and demonstrating your commitment to creating a mentally healthy sporting environment. To get your club on board or learn more, drop me a message.

The courses will be running from mid July over Zoom, we are expecting that they will be run over 4 evenings 6:30 - 10pm.
Course can now be booked online www.bookwhen.com/activesurreyevents

Sad News. Eric Goozee (Added 9 March 2023) - Expired (9 April 2023)
Docs\EricGoozee.jpg It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that the family of Eric Goozee have informed us of his passing at the age of 79 on Saturday 4th March 2023. Eric passed away peacefully in hospital with his family by his side; this was after a period of declining health and a short stay in a local nursing home.

Eric had a great love for badminton, Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club and its members, forging many great friendships over the years. He also helped manage some of the Surrey county teams, and got great enjoyment from competing with the other counties and watching the Surrey players as they progressed.

It was Eric's firm belief that we shouldn't be too saddened when he died after what he described as a 'good innings'. He would much rather have us remember the good times we shared together and celebrate his life.

The funeral will be Tuesday 18th April, 2pm at North East Surrey Crematorium, Morden Lane, SM4 4NU.
Afterwards from 3pm at Kingswood Golf and Country Club, Sandy Lane, Kingswood, Tadworth, Surrey, KT20 6NE.
Flowers to W.A. Truelove & Sons, High Street, Banstead, SM7 2NS or Just Giving: Alzheimers, Jacquie's page

The family would also like to thank you all for the kind messages of condolence they have been receiving.
