Historical Club News 2000-2001

6th August 2001

The County Coaching Course is now underway with a limited number of places. So far we have had a good turnout with questions raised by the coach (Ray Learney) as to the level of fitness in the attendees.

Tang's Summer Club is a roaring success and is running from 18:00 - 20:00 on Sundays at Northwood Sports Centre where many members are battling it out against heat and the usual summer flab that seems to appear around this time of year.

Coaching for all members will be available as soon as the new season starts in September. Northwood now has five coaches who will be available to pass on their knowledge to all club members (as it was the club that paid for their coaching course). Arrangements for when and how will be finalised in time for the new season so that everyone can benefit from the additional skills available.

The Advanced Coaching Course was a great success with Richard Doling, a high ranking England player, who ran a very enjoyable and technically enlightening course for both the juniors and the seniors although less bending and running was expected from the seniors. All attendees managed to survive the experience, just, and the John Penrose Centre hopefully won't notice the large hole Greg left in the wall as he tried to disprove the laws of physics and the fact that solids won't go through other solids. Pictures of some of the dodgy suspects are shown below with Richard in the middle looking a bit intimidated. Quite a few of them managed to sneak away before the photo was taken.

Junior Session and AGM

Currently underway is a junior session which is held at the John Penrose Centre on Saturday 10am - 12noon and is a busy, thriving club. This is currently run with the Centre providing the courts and shuttles with some of the Northwood coaches (Eddie, Malcolm and Nigel) and some senior members (Hing and Jean) attending to organise the club. A singles ladder as well as performance monitoring are in place to give the juniors a good sense of how they are improving.

The club AGM was held on Sunday 20th May with Theresa kindly providing a venue once again with Anton chairing the meeting. Fourteen members attended and it was agreed to hold a further EGM as there were too many points to discuss in the time allowed. Further information will be posted or you can ask one of the committee members for an update. Points discussed included;

Extended court booking for next seasons matches
Accounts
Club shirts, sweaters etc. for next season
Assigning club committee members etc.
Team performance
Next seasons teams

JUNIORS - PLEASE NOTE: NBC Junior Badminton Club starts its season Sunday 9th September, 10am-12 noon at its main Potter Street venue. There are plans to have two mens doubles, one mixed and one ladies teams to play in a suitable league.

The Second Intermediate Badminton Coaching Session (24th March).

NBC's 2nd Intermediate Coaching Course started Saturday 24th March, again at John Penrose Centre in Harefield. Once again, fifty juniors enlisted for the course on the 1st day, half from the previous course, and half new players mainly from Harrow schools. The 2nd course finishes Saturday 21st April.

Northwood Badminton Coaching goes down a storm!

Northwood BC's 1st Intermediate Coaching Course ended Saturday 17th March. In total, fifty juniors registered for the course, from ten schools within Hillingdon Borough, and two schools elsewhere.

Great enthusiasm was clearly evident by all junior players, without exception. An impressed coach - Tom Ingram - said of the group in his closing summary, "I am so pleased to see that every single one of you has shown marked improvement in your standard of play over the five week period."

Yuill Cup Club Tournament

The Yuill Cup tournament was played on Sunday 28th January and involved 24 club members. It began with the first rounds being played as two groups of eight men and one group of ladies. From each of the mens groups the top four went through and were paired with a lady depending on their position. Quarter, semi and then finals were played as mixed doubles culminating with the final which was won by Jean Wilkinson and Malcolm Pescod with Jean Fitt and Shamim Ahmed being the other finalists.

Lottery Grant for Northwood Badminton Club

NBC are very pleased to announce their success in being awarded a lottery grant which is about £5,000.

A great deal of hard work and effort was put into getting this grant and it will be a huge benefit to young people who are interested in playing badminton. There will be a number of coaching sessions by Ray Learney, a County and National coach, for the youngsters which will be followed up with coaching for club members to County standard and will also provide the club with six BA of E Level One coaches who can then carry on the training.

Paul Archibald, Sports Development Officer for Hillingdon Borough Council, presents a cheque for £5000 to Margot Wilson (Treasurer) and Nigel Ball (Chairman) of Northwood Badminton Club at their courts on Potter Street in Northwood Hills. Members of the club are joined by Sheila Collins (Middlesex Badminton Association Youth Development Officer) and Northwood Badminton Club junior and youth members who will attend courses on the 7 month coaching programme.

Northwood Badminton Club (NBC) is the first badminton club in Middlesex County to be granted a Coaching Award. The aim of the grant is to build and coach NBC junior and youth squads to feed through to NBC senior club and county league teams. NBC's objective is to become a "Centre of Excellence" for badminton development within Hillingdon and Middlesex.

The £5000 will be used to offer a multi-level series of coaching courses primarily for 12-18 year old school students in Hillingdon, although schools in neighbouring boroughs are also eligible, and to tertiary education students in the same areas. Although under 18s are the primary focus, there is no age barrier to players serious about improving their badminton.
