GwinAq Defends Title at Lanier Winter Invitesanta visits

12/16/19 - Gwinnett Aquatics won the Lanier Winter Invite in Gainesville this weekend, defending its title from last year.   It was an especially strong showing given that most of our Senior team wasn't there this year and we had lower participation than usual from our Blue, Gold and Junior teams. On the plus side we had a great contribution from our 8Us in Blue and Pre team who finished second for that age group!

Led by multi event winners Nolan Patterson, Isaac Saenz and Baylor Stanton the team was able to hold off Host Lanier Aquatics with a big Sunday night finals. Saenz and Stanton combined to break 11 team records, some of them repeatedly (and some they both broke!)

Over the three-day meet we had eleven swimmers win events and 16 more medal! In addition 11 swimmers picked up new time standards and three got their first state cuts.

Now we have a great opportunity for even more improvement during the holidays to get ready for the Rays Invite and Eastern Classic and the bigger championship meets in February and March!

Next Wave of Senior Swimmers Get Twelfth at State!

12/9 - It was supposed to be a rebuilding year.  Six of the seven swimmers who scored at last years meet have since moved on.  Over half the group had never been to SC State and only 4 or 5 swimmers who were seeded in the top 32 (the number that make finals in each event).

I guess no one told the senior swimmers.  Led by Maggie Nguyen's record breaking swim in the 50 free and 6th place finish in the 100 as well as four record breaking relays, GaGa took 12th place in the meet and, despite having only a dozen swims seeded in the top 32, had 10 swimmers make it back in 25 events! This was also the largest group we've had go the championship meet.  The list of accomplishments is long so here goes.

5 new team records: Nguyen in 50 free as well as Girls 200 and 400 Free and 200 Medley relays and Boys 400 Medley.
9 scoring finishes: Trevor Harbin, Ryan Haskins, Darnell Mitchell (2), Maggie Nguyen, Rachel Peden, Graham Simmon (3)
First AAA (All-Star) times of the year: Lauren Diehl, Tyler Wooldridge, Andy Zhu
First AA of the year
: Harbin, Ryan Haskins, Kaylee McLester, Rachel Peden, Blake Wilson.
First Sr Sectional Cuts: Lauren Diehl, Harbin, Nguyen, Sofie Rees, Thomas Wooldridge, Tyler Wooldridge
First Futures Cuts: Graham Simmon

Now the remaining swimmers will hope to be equally impressive at the Lanier meet this weekend, then it's on to Holiday Training

11/18 - Gwinnett Aquatics competed in their first prelims/finals meet of the season at Dynamo Swim Center this weekend. The Woodie B Malone Invite was a great early season showing with a bundle of net team records, time standards and qualifying times.  Three swimmers won multiple events with four more placing and 26 more earning top-10 finishes.

Diehl, Darnell Mitchell, Maggie Nguyen, Graham Simmon, and Dylan Yin picked up their first AAA (All-Star) times of the season while Lauren Diehl, Collier Stanton and Thomas Wooldridge got their first AA's.  Trevor Harbin, Paige Johnson, Sean LIn and Reagan Miller swam to their first A times of the year and Owen Breiding, Sarah Heppe and Jaidyn Joiner got their first B times.

Small Group Takes It Up a Notch at Ohio Valley Champs

6/10/19 - A small group of Gwinnett Aquatics senior swimmers competed at the Ohio Valley Champs (OVC) at the beautiful "Lakeside Club" in Louisville, Ky, a 50m course set inside an old granite rock quarry. It was the 91st year of this meet going back to 1928!

Despite some weather challenges and a wicked current in the pool, the group took great advantage of the extra opportunity to race long course. the small group actually placed 7th in 13 and Over scoring against teams like Ohio State, the University of Kentucky and USAS powerhouse Carmel Swim Club out of Indianapolis.  Graham Simmon led the way, scoring in 9 events including two 3rd place finishes.  Hanna Burke, Lauren Diehl, Griffin Hammett and Sarah Jahns all scored as well.

Swimmers Get Real at Dixie Classic, Dunbar Invites

6/4/19 - The rigors of mid-season training were evident this weekend at both the Dixie Classic at Dynamo and the Betsy Dunbar Invite at GaTech.  Most of the 70-80 swimmers in attendance are deep into some hard training and it showed.  Nonetheless we has some solid swims and some younger swimmers were still able to put up some best times.

For the first time in over 40 years Dixie was timed finals instead of prelims/finals so it was even harder for some of our top swimmers to match previous years' efforts.  Even so David Duong, Baylor and Collier Stanton and Isaac Saenz all won events and Hanna Burke Caitlyn Diehl, Lindsey Diehl, and Graham Simmon placed all had top three swims!  Henry Breiding also won an event at the Dunbar meet.

Between the two meets ten swimmers picked up a new time standard level.  Collier Stanton got his first AA and Max Inlow, Marlow Misner and Jeffrey Xu got their first A times. Justin Bennett, Steve Michael Bennett, Olivia Carey and Tanner Manson earned their first BB times while Cate Joyce and Sijia She got their first B times.

Next weekend we have a group going to a big meet in Louisville (Ohio Valley Champs) and another going to the Death Valley Open Water swim in Clemson.

And we did some racing too! Charlie Fountain and Isaac Saenz both won events while Henry Brieding, Lauren Diehl, Nolan Patterson and Baylor Stanton all placed top three.

Fountain, Saenz, Stanton and Griffin Hammett picked up their first AAA times.  Patterson and David Duong both got their first AA times while Trevor Harbin, Jaden Henry (his first ever!), Ella Moulder, Caitlyn Petmecky, Blake Wilson and Thomas Wooldridge got their first A's. Here We Go! First Long Course Meet Kicks Off Season

4/28/19 - Gwinnett Aquatics started the long course season this weekend at the LC Kickoff at Ga Tech.  The coaches thought we might get off to a quick start because the work at practice has been so good and they were right. Twelve swimmers had a top three finish with Henry Breiding, Lauren Diehl, Sarah Jahns, Isaac Saenz, and Baylor Stanton all getting wins.

The first meet of every year is always a lot of fun with lots of swimmers getting to see how much they've improved since last summer with some big drops. 68 swimmers have already gotten a USAS time standard including fifteen who have achieved AA times, and eleven more getting As.   Hannah Claire Jowers and Tyler Wooldridge got their first AAs of the year, Collier Stanton picked up his first ever A time. Trevor Harbins and Thomas Wooldridge got their first BB time and Caroline Bold her first (ever) B time.

In addition eighteen swimmers made state cuts, including first timer Sarah Heppe. Many more swimmers already have qualifying times from last year but it is always good when you can make the cut in the current season.

Gwinnett Aquatics Third at Divisionals

Simmon, 12U Boys break team records

4/1 - Gwinnett Aquatics finished 3rd at this weekend's Divisional Champs in Athens.  We were 2nd in the 11 and older age groups but just didn't have the numbers in 10Us to stay ahead of 2nd place ASL.  We were also missing over 800 points in the older swimmers but that just made room for some newer names to make the A-list with many medaling or making new standards for the first time ever.

Seven swimmers combined to win eighteen events: Hanna Burke, Ryan Haskins, Paige Johnson, Marlowe Misner, Brielle Mitchell Isaac Saenz (5x), and Graham Simmon (6x) who also broke his own team records in 100 and 200 breast (and almost the meet records!)  The 12U boys broke the team record in the free relay.

63 other swimmers scored, 42 in the top 8, which, despite the absences of some older swimmers, almost matches last years number of top 8 finishers. And we were three-for-three in swim-offs!

The team also, once again, showed great team spirit. Thanx to all the parents who helped organize the posters, shirts, theme-ware and the catered meals too. It really helped make this a special weekend for the swimmers. Standard breakers for the meet were:

    • First AAAA (Sliver Cap) - Graham Simmon (first ever!)
    • First AAA (All Star) Times - Hannah Burke (first ever!)
    • First AA Times - Ethan McKinsey, Nolan Patterson, Blake Wilson (first ever!), Andy Zhu
    • First A Times - Paige Johnson, Zoe Wilson (both first ever!)
    • First BB Times - Abby Bold, Jack Byrne, Adam Dockstader
    • First B Times - Grant Haskins
    • First State Cuts - Hanna Burke, Ryan Haskins, Andy Zhu and first ever qualifiers Owen Breiding, Ruthie DeLong and Max Inlow

GwinAq Seniors 19th at ESSZ Senior Sectional Champs

3/12 - Gwinnett Aquatics' Senior swimmers kicked off the Championship season in grand style at the Senior Sectional Champs in Cary, NC this weekend.  Despite some health issues and only swimming one relay, the squad managed a 19th place finish and numerous new cuts.

Sarah Jahns led all scorers taking 4th in the mile and the 1000 while picking up 2 new Futures cuts and her first AAAAs of the season. Griffin Hammett and Charlie Fountain also scored.  Fountain also picked up some new Futures cuts while Lauren Diehl got some new Sectional standards.

Meanwhile over 30 GaGa swimmers competed in this Saturday's fun meet. It was a great chance to see these swimmers compete and get them some feedback as they prepare for the upcoming Championships in two weeks.   Sophie Arscott, Abby Bold and Haley Lindsay all had 100% best times.  View results using the link below. Please note the "Improv" column is using a very difficult conversion off the swimmer's best yard times so if they added a little it was a good swim and if they dropped it was a big improvement.

Meanwhile most of our Senior swimmers were tearing it up at the Georgia High School State Champs.  With six swimmers getting top-10 finishes and ten swimmers in Saturday's finals heats it was our most successful State Meet in the last decade.  Griffin Hammett medaled in the 5A meet while Julianna Carey, Lauren Diehl, Charlie Fountain, Sarah Jahns and Dylan Yin all finished in the top ten at the 7A meet.
