St Rule Trophy First Round Scores & Report

Tilly Holder leads by two with a 75

By ALMA ROBERTSON
A blustery wind, unusually from the south-east, led to high scores on the New Course St Andrews in the first round of the St Rule Trophy.
Best score of the day (and the only score under par) came from Tilly Holder, Woburn, who carded a 73 with five birdies.
Lying in joint second place with 75 were Rebecca Watson (Holston Hills, USA) and Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder).
Defending Champion Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) was disappointed with her round of 76
which included 4 birdies and 2 double bogeys.
Ann Ramsay of Kirriemuir, called up as reserve, putted like a dream for a 77, the same score as Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) and Tara Davies (Holyhead Bay).
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), recently crowned Scottish Champion, scored 78. She found the windy conditions tricky especially on the inward half. Others on 78 were
Laura Murray (Alford) who pitched in at the last for a 78, Gillian O'Leary (Cork) with an eagle 2 at the 4th and Alexandra Peters (Notts Ladies).
Scotland, represented by Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), Pamela Pretswell and Kylie Walker lead with 153 in the team event.

BILLINGHAM VICTORIOUS AT WEST LANCS

NEWS RELEASE
The Faldo Series continued its 2009 season with the third Faldo Series UK Championship, held at West Lancs Golf Club.
James Billingham, 18, from Leicester, was the overall winner of the tournament after carding a 36-hole total of four-over-par 148. Billingham held off the challenge from Andrew Palmer, a finalist last year, to win his age category and the tournament by one stroke.
As a result, Billingham has earned himself an invite to the Faldo Series Grand Final in Brazil later this year along with all of the age category winners at West Lancs.
Also remarkable were the efforts of 16 year-old Oliver Carr, who produced the low round of the tournament with a second round three under par 69, enough to guarantee his a seat on the plane to Brazil.
Billingham commented after his win: “I’m thrilled to be going to the Grand Final. Nick Faldo is a hero for me so I’m really looking forward to meeting him. I am extremely pleased with the consistency I have shown over the last two days. West Lancs was a tough test.”

GB&I Vagliano Trophy team to play

in LET's AIB Ladies Irish Open

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Twenty Eleven, the Promoters of the AIB Ladies Irish Open and The 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle, in association with the Ladies European Tour and the Ladies Golf Union have completed a unique arrangement that will enable the top nine female amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland to play in the 2009 AIB Ladies Irish Open, supported by Fáilte Ireland at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links from 26th - 28th June, 2009.
All nine members of the team selected for the Vagliano Trophy will be invited to play in the AIB Ladies Irish Open as part of the team’s preparation for the matches against the Continent of Europe in July, under the watchful eye and guidance of Team Captain, Mary McKenna.
The announcement is significant from an Irish point of view as there is a possibility that several Irish amateurs could qualify for the Vagliano Team. These would include Lisa and Leona Maguire and Danielle McVeigh who have been showing good form recently. In addition, the Promoters confirmed they had previously extended an invitation to Stephanie Meadow, the 17 year old amateur star from County Antrim, who is now based in the USA.
Shona Malcolm, CEO of the LGU commented: “This really does present the Promoters, the LET and the Ladies' Golf Union with an excellent opportunity to promote partnership working between the amateur and professional ranks in golf, and can only be beneficial to building pathways between the two disciplines of the game. It is a win win situation”.
Mary McKenna commented:“I am delighted that my team will be together and have the experience of testing themselves against the best players in the game. This opportunity will also allow us to get together for a dedicated team day at Killeen Castle which will be of great help in our preparations for the matches in July.”
Speaking at today’s announcement of the 2009 AIB Ladies Irish Open Mr. Billy Andrews, General Manager of AIB, said:“We are delighted with this development as it embraces the amateur game in Ireland by giving some of our talented young players the chance of playing against the professionals and gain invaluable experience for their futures.”

Samantha and Amelia star in

US Kids' Golf in East Lothian

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE

By MARTIN DEMPSTER
A British girl and a boy from America produced the two outstanding performances on the second day of the US Kids Golf European Championships in East Lothian.
Playing in the girls' Under-9 years event, over the back nine at Kilspindie, Samantha Fuller shot a superb 29, an effort which, combined with an opening 38, gave her a ten-shot lead going into the final day.
Over at Luffness New, Frank Olav Garber, from Washington State, conjured up a 67 – 10 shots better than his first round – to open up a 10-shot lead in the boys' Under-13 years section.
Calum Hill from North Berwick was lying ninth in that event after a second-round 77 – four shots fewer than his opening effort. Still in the Under-13 group, Callum Cochrane was seven shots behind Hill on 165, with Duncan McLean a further three shots adrift.
English competitor Amelia Taylor, pictured above, looked to have the girls' Under-14 title in the bag, a second consecutive 82 over Gullane No 2 earning her a 10-shot lead with a round to go.
By contrast, the race for the boys' Under-14 title is a lot closer. Navjosh Dhallu, also from the England, leads by one from Jake Shearpoint, with first-round leader Aaron Rai a further shot back.
Reflecting the cosmopolitan entry, players from Thailand, Guatemala, Italy and the Phillipines were leading some of the other categories.

Laura Davies accepts special

exemption to US Women’s Open

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION
May 27, 2009. Far Hills, New Jersey – Laura Davies, the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open champion, has accepted a special exemption from qualifying for the 2009 championship, to be contested July 9-12 on Saucon Valley Country Club’s Old Course in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The exemption was offered by the United States Golf Association, which conducts the championship. The USGA reserves the right to offer additional special exemptions until the beginning of sectional qualifying on June 11.
“Laura is a champion who has truly earned an exemption into this year’s Women’s Open,” said Barbara Douglas, chairman of the USGA Women’s Committee. “Her stellar career makes her one of the top female professionals in the world, and we are thrilled to have her in the championship field for a 24th consecutive year.”
Davies won the 1987 U.S. Women's Open at Plainfield Country Club, New Jersey in an 18-hole play-off with Ayako Okamoto and JoAnne Carner. It was the English golfer’s first professional victory in the United States.
Davies has played in every U.S. Women’s Open since 1986, recording eight top-15 finishes.“The U.S. Women’s Open is one of the highlights of the year for me, so to be given an exemption into this year’s championship means a lot to me,” said Davies.
“I’m really looking forward to the week at Saucon Valley in July and I’m sure it will be as memorable as the past 23 U.S. Women’s Opens have been for me.”
In addition to her triumph at the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open, Davies has won 19 professional tournaments in the United States. In 1994, she finished first on the LPGA money list after recording three victories, including the McDonald’s LPGA Championship. She added two more major titles in 1996, the McDonald’s LPGA Championship and the du Maurier Classic, en route to Rolex Player of the Year honors.
Davies, 45, also owns 52 international victories, including the 2009 Women’s Australian Open, and has been the top-ranked European player seven times, most recently in 2006.
Laura has also played on every European Solheim Cup team since the start of the event in 1990 and has a 21-16-4 overall record. She is the only player from either team in Solheim Cup history to play in every event.

NCAA Division 1 men's championship

Inverness USA where the weather was

just as bad as at Inverness, Scotland

It could not have been any colder, wetter or windier at the REAL Inverness Golf Club as it was at the Toledo, Ohio version of Inverness Golf Club, the venue for the college-season-ending climax, the NCAA Division 1 men's championship.
Jonathan Bowers (Northwestern), Scott Langley (Illinois) and North Carolina State's Matt Hill shot two-under-par 69s to share the lead three ways in the individual title race.
Oklahoma State and Georgia are the front-running pair after the first round of the team event.
"It was very tough out there today," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "With the wind picking up and the severity of the golf course, it's just survival. Judging by the scores that you see some of these teams shooting -- and you have to remember they are very good teams -- it just lets you know that at any given time (the course) can up and bite you."
Bowers battled showers while shooting his 69 in the morning, while Langley and Hill fought through winds and chilly temperatures in the afternoon at the 7,255yd lay-out.
"On holes six through nine it was coming down pretty good," said Bowers, a left-handed junior who had four birdies and two bogeys. "We had our umbrellas and rain gear on. And then it softened. It didn't rain nearly as hard after that."
It didn't rain in the afternoon, although the early precipitation made the high, deep rough even harder to extricate an errant shot. Then the wind picked up and the mercury fell.
"I played great to shoot the score I did," said Langley, a sophomore who offset a double and two bogeys with six birdies. "It's a tough course anyway, then with the conditions -- it was kind of cold and windy."
Hill, a contender for national player of the year, was pleased that he persevered even though he three-putted the final hole for a bogey.
"I feel like I put myself in really good position," he said. "I have a lot of confidence going into tomorrow."
Texas Christian's Tom Hoge was four under par on the 18th but had an almost unplayable lie in a greenside bunker. Twice his ball rolled back to his feet. His triple-bogey finish left him at 70 along with Alex Ching (San Diego), Philip Francis (UCLA), Tennessee's David Holmes and Nick Taylor (Washington). Only eight players in the 156-man field broke par.
"This is a long golf tournament, so one hole is not going to kill you," Hoge said. "It's a little bit frustrating to leave some shots out there on the last hole, but I know we have a lot of work left."
Top-seeded Oklahoma State, led by Trent Leon's 71, totalled four-over 288 and were joined in the pole position by Georgia, led by 71s from Russell Henley and Brian Harman.
The Cowboys didn't count the 74 of Kevin Tway, playing on the same course where his father Bob holed a bunker shot on the 72nd hole to stun Greg Norman and win the 1986 US PGA Championship.
This is the first year the tournament is being played under a combination medal and match-play format. All 30 qualifying teams and the six individual players will compete in three days of medal play. Those 54 holes will determine the medallist and will cut the field to a final eight teams for match-play. The teams will then play quarter-final and semi-final matches on Friday, with the championship match set to start for Saturday.
Chattanooga was a surprising third with 292 strokes, followed by Washington and San Diego with 293; Arizona State, Ohio State and Tennessee with 294; Michigan with 296; and Arkansas and Duke with 297.
WEATHER NOTE: It wasn't any better today (Wednesday) at Inverness Golf Club, Toledo in the state of Ohio. Coming up to noon local time, play still had not begun in the second round because of rain.

NEWS RELEASE FROM PGA: WINNER MARIE EARNS
AN INVITATION TO L E T EVENT AT HARLECH

Marie Allen has booked herself a temporary return to the Ladies European Tour after winning the second event of the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 WPGA One-Day Series.
The Brookmans Park-based professional carded a two-under-par 72 over Stoke by Nayland’s Gainsborough Course to hold off a trio of challengers by one shot.
The victory, which moved Allen to joint top of the Order of Merit, earned her an invite to the S4C Wales Ladies Championship at Royal St David’s in August.
“I wanted to qualify for the LET event as I was on the tour for a couple of years and have a lot of friends there I’m looking forward to seeing,” said the 29-year-old.
“I phoned a few of them when I’d won to tell them and that I’d be down there for the week. It’ll be nice to spend the week with them. I’ve just got to get organised now and arrange the week off.”
Allen revealed that a coaching session with the club’s head professional Paul Hetherington proved decisive in her victory, which has given her season a new approach.
“I saw Paul on the weekend and he gave me quite a lot of help, which obviously paid off,” she said.
“He’s been very good and is keen to push me forward on the playing side. Winning this event has certainly helped my confidence, especially with two more one-day events in the next couple of weeks.
“The Order of Merit is also a target now on the back of this.”
The next in the WPGA One-Day Series is at Cardiff on Wednesday, June 3.
The leading four professionals in each of the seven one-day series events have won points towards the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 WPGA Order of Merit which has prize money of £1,000.
The placings are:
1 Marie Allen (Brookmans Park) 10.00.
1 Heather MacRae (Gullane) 10.00
3 Laura Eastwood (Teign Valley) 9.33.
4 Alexandra Keighley (Huddersfield) 5.33.
5 Joanne Oliver (Knebworth) 3.33.

Emma Brown makes comeback to international

golf with England in European team event

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Yorkshire’s Emma Brown will return to international team golf when she represents England in the European women's amateur team championship at Bled, Slovenia, from July 7-11. The Malton & Norton player will be joined in the team by Hannah Barwood (Knowle), Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall), Jodi Ewart (Catterick) and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton).
The non-travelling reserves are Charlotte Wild (Mere) and Ellie Givens (Blackwell Grange).
Emma Brown, 37, retired from international team competition in 2006 having played in three Curtis Cup teams (as Emma Duggleby) and represented England over more than a decade.
She has continued play top level individual golf and won the British open mid-amateur title in 2007.
So far this year she has been third in the Helen Holm Scottish open stroke-play and was a semi-finalist at this month’s English championship. Her earlier achievements, in her maiden name of Duggleby, include winning the British, English, European, South African matchplay and Scottish strokeplay championships.
Emma, who has just started a new job at Sandburn Hall Golf Club in Yorkshire, commented: “I still enjoy competing and I have missed playing in the team events.”
Hannah Barwood, 18, was the 2008 English champion and holds two Faldo Series titles, won on different continents.
Holly Clyburn, 18, is the French open Under-18 champion and the winner of the British Colleges open golf championship.
Charlie Douglass, 20, won the 2009 English championship and was a quarter-finalist in the Spanish championship.
Jodi Ewart, 21, has won the English stroke-play championship for the past two years. She is a Curtis Cup player and one of the top golfers on the US women’s college circuit.
Rachel Jennings, 20, is a past winner of the English girls’ and the French Under-21 titles. Like Jodi Ewart, she represented England in last year’s World Amateur Team Championship.

LPGA Tour Championship goes on without a sponsor

Hard times on the LPGA Tour as sponsors, squeezed by the Credit Crunch, drop out but the Tour will press on with its season-ending Tour Championship without the backing of Stanford Financial.
The LPGA Tour reaffired this week that the LPGA Tour Championship will be played at The Houstonian Golf & Country Club from November 19 to 22.
The field will be cut to the top 70 and ties after two rounds, then cut to the top 30 players after the third round. The purse is $1.5 million, which is only $240,000 more than first prize at the Tour Championship on the men's US PGA Tour.

Sally Watson fifth in Florida as she

warms up for 'British' at Harlech

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Curtis Cup Scot Sally Watson, fifth in a rain-shortened Future Collegians World Tour event at the weekend, is warming up nicely for next month's British women's open amateur championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales.
This is the key tournament for the contenders for places in the GB&I team of nine for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Hamburg (July 24-25). The selectors will be out in force on the Harlech links, seeking to choose a team that will be taking on a Continental team every bit as strong as a United States line-up.
Spain's Maria Hernandez (Purdue University) won the American college circuit women's championship last week and her compatriot Azahara Munoz (Arizona State) won the title last year. Both will be in the European team for Hamburg as will a third Spaniard, who, on her day, is probably better than both Hernandez and Munoz - Carlota Ciganda, the British champion at Alwoodley in 2007.
Sally Watson, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who will be 18 on July 10, is a resident student at the IMG David Leadbetter Academy at Bradenton, Florida. She had a knee operation immediately after last year's Curtis Cup over the Old Course, St Andrews and was out of action for months.
The selectors will be looking to see if Sally is as good as she was and her results in American tournaments this year indicate that she has made a full recovery from the operation.
Sally will be enrolling at Stanford University, California - where Tiger Woods and Mhairi McKay were also students, in the autumn.
The latest tournament the Scot, entered from Earlsferry, was playing in was the FCWT's Laura Diaz National Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida over the 6,335yd Haig course with a par of 72.
A round was lost because of rain, so there just weren't enough holes left for Sally to make up the ground she conceded with a slow start of 76. Her second round - a 71 - was more like it with birdies at the second, fourth, eighth and 11th before she bogeyed the 13th, 14th and 18th.
Pars there would have seen Sally finish a lot closer than four shots behind the winner, Maria Imelda Isabel Piccio from Davao in the Philippines. She scored 72 and 71 for 143.
Sally was the only British player in an international field of 78. Three of the first five came from the Philippines, not a country renowned for producing very good female golfers. South Korea may have to look to its laurels.

Steph Meadow wins Tournament

of Champions by eight strokes

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
By JULIE WILLIAMS
Stephanie Meadow shot a final round of three-under-par 69 to win the International Junior Golf Tour's JGT Tournament of Champions' girls' division at Grand Cypress Resort, Orlando, Florida.
The 17-year-old from Antrim, Northern Ireland, began the day with a five-shot lead and cruised to an eight-shot victory with six birdies on her card.
Meadow, pictured with the championship trophy, who began her round on No. 10, turned in 1-under 35 and closed with three birdies and a lone bogey to shoot 2-under 34 on the back nine. She finished at 4-under 212.
“I think the North/South course is harder as a course so I think the 69 on the North/South was probably a better score,” she said.
“The New Course was very open, and I didn’t hit it as well as what I did yesterday, so I think the 69 on the second day was definitely my biggest.”
Despite three three-putts in Monday’s round, Meadow, ranked 38th in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, said she maintained her focus throughout the final round.
“I just kept going,” said Meadow.
Irene Jung took second in the 30-player field with a score of 220.

FirstPoint USA to sponsor English

Under-18 girls' championship

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
The English Women’s Golf Association is delighted to announce that the leading sports scholarship consultancy, FirstPoint USA, will sponsor the English girls’ Under-18 championship. The tournament, which traditionally attracts a full field of the country’s best young players, will take place at North Wilts Golf Club from July 28 to August 1.
Andrew Kean, the managing director of FirstPoint USA, commented: “It will be a great event and we are looking forward to supporting English girls’ golf.”
Mr Kean, a non-executive director of EWGA, added: “These are exciting times for the association and we want to be part of it.”
FirstPoint USA, which has placed thousands of young athletes on sports scholarship, also sponsors two major Scottish boys’ events. The company’s presence at the English girls’ championship will help raise players’ awareness about the scholarship process. It’s an option which an increasing number of girl golfers are exploring and taking up. But Mr Kean pointed out: “We are not trying to increase tourism to Florida! We are very conscious that girls have to be prepared for the academic challenge ahead. It’s full-time education and full-time golf. It’s no good shooting 68s and 69s unless you get the grades - or you’ll be sent home.”
EWGA tournament secretary Emma Lowe commented: “The English girls’ championship is a wonderful event which produces fantastic golf and we are delighted to have the support of FirstPoint USA.”
The EWGA website will feature latest news and online scoring during the championship: www.englishwomensgolf.org

Accurate driving, steady short game

were secrets of Megan's success

Megan Briggs, the 95th Scottish women's closed amateur golf champion, has been speaking exclusively to Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk.
We thought you would like to hear what she had to say about her victory at Southerness.
"I am studying law at Strathclyde University and have just finished scond year.
"I am going to play in the British women's open amateur championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales in a couple of weeks.
"To win the 'Scottish' is a great honouor and something that all Scottish amateurs aspire to and practise for. My exams finished the week before Southerness, which meant that I could focus on my golf and the competition.
"During the championship, my driving was very accurate, whcih was crucial in the wind. Also my short game was very steady and it probably what saw me right through to the final.
"I would once again like to thank the SLGA and Southerness for the fantastic week - and also my Dad for caddying, seeing as I forgot to thank him in my speech!"

Jade beats Paula in Ladies German Open play-off

France’s Jade Schaeffer won the HypoVereinsbank Ladies German Open, presented by Audi, today for her first Ladies European Tour victory. The 22-year-old from Strasbourg, who recently moved to Paris, beat Spain’s Paula Marti with a birdie at the first extra hole.
Musselburgh's Vikki Laing had a good last round, a three-under-par 69, for a joint 25th place on 286.
Dunblane's Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) signed off with a disappinting 76 for joint 54th place on 292.
Krystle Caithness from Cupar in Fife, closed with a 74 - her worst round of the four, for a share of 46th place on 290.
The biggest disappointment of all was the weekend form of Claire Queen (The Carrick at Cameron House). Her last two rounds were 76 and 78 for a total of 10 over par 298 and a share of 64th place, the last of those who made the halfway cut.
Clare had no birdies at all over the final 36 holes and had a double bogey 6 a the 10th hole today.

Megan Briggs now in contention for

GB&I team place for Vagliano Trophy

New Scottish women's amateur golf champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) has forced herself into contention for a place in the Great Britain & Ireland team by winning her national title at windy Southerness on Saturday when she beat Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) 4 and 3 in the final.
Neither Briggs nor Kenney was named early last October when the preliminary squad for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Hamburger Golf Club, Germany on July 24-25 was announced.
But skipper Mary McKenna has said that the Ladies Golf Union Selection committee will choose, after the British women's open amateur championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales from June 9 to 12, nine players who have shown the best form in 2009, whether they are in that prelim squad or not.
Incidentally, the winners of the English (Charlie Douglass) and Welsh (Tara Davies) women's titlea were not in the squad either!
Megan, a 19-year-old Strathclyde University student, needs to follow up her victory at Southerness with a good run in the "British" - and, if she does that, the selectors will surely plump for her as a new GB&I cap.
The same goes for Fife champion Louise Kenney, who played great golf to get to the Scottish final - four under par in beating the No 2 seed Kylie Walker in the quarter-finals, but then was let down by her driving on the last day.
Next year's 96th Scottish women's closed amateur championship will be played for the first time at Craigielaw and, in 2011, the venue will be Machrihanish.

Janice nine-under-par but only
jt 35th in Corning Classic

Janice Moodie is on nine-under-par 207 after rounds of 69, 70 and 68 but so high is the standard on the LPGA Tour that the Scot is in "only" joint 35th place with one round to go in the Corning Classic.
Joint leaders, after a Saturday scorcher of 10-under-par 62 are 19 year old Japanese rookie Mika Miyazato and Soo-Yun Kang of South Korea, both on 17-under-par 199.
Karine Icher of France, who began the day with a four-shot lead, stumbled to a 74 and finished the day in a tie for 17th, five shots off the lead.
Eunjung Yi of South Korea made three eagles in her first five holes to become just the fifth player in LPGA history to accomplish that feat in a round.
Third-placed on 200, Yani Tseng, 20-year-old LPGA Rookie of the Year in 2008, was even better, making two eagles and four birdies on the front nine for a 28.
That was just one stroke better than playing partner Natalie Gulbis (66), but it broke the tournament record of 29 set two years ago by Wendy Ward. It also made Tseng just the ninth player in LPGA history to shoot 8 under for nine holes.
