It is less than a year since they were keeping their love affair hidden from their colleagues in Parliament and a doting wife.

But Conservative backbencher Jack Lopresti and fellow Tory MP Andrea Jenkyns have now confirmed they are engaged – and she is expecting her first baby at the age of 42.

Mr Lopresti, 46, was forced to come clean about the affair to Lucy, his wife of 23 years, in December last year, when they were seen kissing at a railway station platform.

He already has three children, two boys aged 22 and 17, and a daughter, 19.

But the true nature of their relationship was hinted at days before Mrs Lopresti was informed – when they attended a Christmas lunch dressed in matching novelty elf jumpers.

Despite a clandestine start to their courtship, Mr Lopresti and Miss Jenkyns are now engaged, and – a world away from shunning interest in their love lives – Miss Jenkyns yesterday announced news of her pregnancy on Facebook.

The MP for Morley and Outwood – who famously ousted Ed Balls from his West Yorkshire constituency – said: 'We are very happy to announce that I am pregnant and the baby is due in spring next year.

'This is a very exciting time for me and my fiancé Jack.

'I always wanted to be a mother and I am incredibly pleased that I was able to become pregnant at the age of 42.

'We had a difficult first trimester in which I was in and out of hospital several times, but God willing, all okay now.'

Mr Lopresti added: 'I am absolutely thrilled with the fantastic news that Andrea is expecting.

'We are both looking forward hugely to the arrival of our child in the spring.'

Mr Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke in south Gloucestershire since 2010, was caught kissing former beauty queen Miss Jenkyns in Doncaster.

When confronted, Mr Lopresti, who has three grown-up children with Mrs Lopresti, initially claimed he and Miss Jenkyns were 'just good friends'.

But he was forced to come clean when confronted with photographs of the amorous clinch.

When news of the relationship broke last year, one friend of Mrs Lopresti said: 'He has betrayed her. She is so lovely. He is a pig.

'It was a surprise to me so it would be a surprise to her. She was in bits. She is absolutely beside herself. It is horrible.

'He is so mean. And doing it before Christmas – any time is bad, but this is horrible.'

Former music teacher Miss Jenkyns said she 'fell into politics' because her landlord when she moved to Lincoln was a member of the Conservative Party.

She graduated from delivering leaflets to becoming a Tory councillor and then pipped Mr Balls – currently surprising viewers with his energetic efforts on Strictly Come Dancing – to his constituency seat.

Mr Lopresti is a Territorial Army Afghanistan veteran and was an estate agent and mortgage broker before joining the Conservative Party as a development officer.
