Time to update the blog!!

We built a boat.  We are renovating another, and the two houses we worry about are in pretty good shape.  Oh, yeah.  Grandson, Luke, from New Canaan, went to a Duke U diving camp and we stayed with my sister, Patience.  Grandson Zephyros learned to row.  Grandson Marc learned to drive, and Granddaughter Marina got some new dresses made from Norm's old regatta t-shirts.  Some pictures.

Friends Jarred and Megan are sharing some pictures and stories of their new-to-them Aphrodite 101, Elixir.  We have not met them but have communicated in a very close way and we thank them for it.

Some pictures of Elixir of Seattle:

Jarred's Dodge 250 trumps my Ford Ranger badged as a Mazda 2300.  No matter, trucks are fun.  Out here on Cape Cod, I am always pleased to see the other truck guys give Elizabeth a little respect when she drives our pickup.  Our truck is the most useful tool in the shop.

So.  Whats to removing a teak deck?  A lot of work?  Teak is beautiful until it is ugly and then, it is Ugly.  Good job kids!

Deck ready for refinishing with....?  Check back later.

Aphrodite's such as Averisera don't have much teak work on deck so I don't mind lavishing a bit of love on mine.  We are trying out a varnish from Jamestown Distributors in Rhode Island.  I can recoat every hour or so up to four coats... without sanding.  We will let you know.

Someday we'll actually go sailing!

Sand and varnish.  Sand and varnish.  We are closing in on the end, we can taste it.  Some days we move the Skerry outdoors.

It isn't raining so outside with you Skerry."

Mama had a hankering to lay on another coat of grey to the Nutshell Pram so we did.  A little while later, we lifted the Skerry into the garage.  We have a two boat garage.

Some varnish work was accomplished on the Aphrodite parts.  Seen here are the components.  We are using Jamestown Distributors Lust Varnish, which is pleasing Norm.  Lust varnish dries quickly for easy recoating.

As for varnishes:  the nutshell has MinWax Helmsman UV Varnish, the Skerry gets Interlux #90, and the Aphrodite gets Lust.  (Gotta love the pun there.)

Another Aphrodite!

Recently, we heard from a couple in Seattle who just purchased Aphrodite 101 US 29.  It is always good to hear from another Aphrodite owner.  We got a picture and permission to show it.
Thanks Jarred and Megan.

The delivery home by the new owners.  Norm and Elizabeth had a rougher ride with Averisera in April of 2007.  Aphrodite 101s deliver great rides in the best or worst conditions.  Welcome.

Stage Harbor, Chatham, MA

The end state:  at rest in Stage Harbor, Chatham, MA.  Averisera's new home for a while.

The day before departure, we went over to the BSC docks, said good bye to old friends and had a nice visit with Neli and Vasily aboard their boat, Katrina.  Norm met Elizabeth the same year N & V arrived at BSC.  We became friends and have enjoyed the business of becoming grandparents at the same time.  Sailing and cruising are all about the people we meet.

May 7th, view across Boston Harbor from our overnight berth at BSC.  Thanks, guys.

May 8th approaching the Cape Cod Canal.  The weather went from warm and flat calm to overcast and windy and quite cold in about twenty minutes.  We still had an hour to go.  Upwind, of course.  After docking and chatting with other sailors, we made our way up to the Pilot House Rest for some warm drinks and chow.

May 9th, we sailed through the Canal and Woods Hole into Nantucket Sound.  Well, we motor-sailed in light headwinds...  Elizabeth's son, Zachary works at Harwichport Boat Yard.  Mid afternoon he called and said there was a quiet berth ready for us.  We said, "thanks," and went in to tie up for the night.  It was so nice to see him again and meet some of his coworkers.  The next day, the three of us took Averisera around the corner to Stage Harbor.

More to follow!

Tax Day Storm 2014

On this day, in 2007, Elizabeth and I (Norm) finally got under way from Stratford CT to our new boat-home in Boston, MA.  That year featured a tremendous storm that covered the US East Coast with flooding rain and destructive winds.  It was referred to as the Tax Day Storm 2007.  Today is similar weather although the boat circumstances are very different.  This year, Averisera is on the hard, awaiting launching.  We are at rest in our home in Medford  waiting to close on the sale of this house before moving to a new home in Harwich, MA.

A picture of the boat alongside the pontoon at Housatonic Boat Club in Stratford CT.  It was flat calm, the calm before the storm.  So began a wonderful adventure.

Today, I went over to see her.  Averisera is hauled out at the Boston Sailing Center Boat Yard in East Boston, MA.  Alongside is a Soling class keel boat.  The Soling is the base design for the Aphrodite 101 of which ours is hull number 264.  The story is that Paul Elvstrom wanted a Soling-like boat for ocean racing around Denmark and commissioned the Aphrodite design. We are launching on May 1 and planning to sail to our new mooring May 8.

In other news: Our friends, Bill and Maura from Constitution YC and Boston Sailing Center have a summer house in nearby Chatham, MA.  We hope to see them with their boat down in Nantucket Sound.  They have a Cal 33-2, Tupelo Honey.  This is a picture of both boats taken by Tim Shea in 2011, I believe.  Thanks, Tim.  Our boats are the same length and have similar PHRF handicaps.  They have hot and cold running water and standing headroom.  We don't.

Last bit of news:  We have more time than ever before to sail.  Nantucket Sound, here we come.
