MALVERN 43 - 26 SPARTANS

Malvern continued to flex their muscles in the league as they defeated a lively Spartans team. The last time these two teams met, earlier in the season, Malvern came out as dominant winners. However, today was a different story as Spartans didn’t allow Malvern to get full control of the game and showed their strength as a hard-running team.
Malvern were without some familiar faces for today’s game: John Clark, Tom Hale, Joe Murcott and Lewis Hardiman all absent. This saw opportunities given to a swathe of 2nd team players to impress in front of the home crowd. Ashley Budding, Liam Moloney, Harvey Smedley, Thomas Brainwood and Tom Bill all put in an outstanding shift to ensure the win. This game also marked Adam Green’s 75th cap for Malvern, a huge congratulations to him!

The game started with Spartans gaining ground, giving away a scrum inside Malvern’s 22 metre line. The ball was shipped down the back line, where Dan Batty broke through several tackles, giving Malvern a strong foundation to build off to push forward. The ball was then passed down to Jon Wills who went over for the first try of the game. Malvern scored again quickly after, Max Richardson providing the try as he went on an impressive solo effort to go over the whitewash.

Spartans hit back straightaway, as they earned themselves a penalty, they decided to put the ball into the corner. A back’s move from Spartans allowed their inside centre to barrel over for the converted score. This gave the visitors a new found confidence for the remainder of the game as they continued to battle on throughout.
However, it was Malvern’s turn to assert their dominance as they scored two more tries before the half time whistle, securing the bonus point. Joe Pritchard and Luke Milton both scoring off the back of a couple of powerful offensive surges that stretched away side. Spartans failed to deal with the width of Malvern’s attack, as they home side took advantage of their narrow defence.
After the break, Malvern kept the scoreboard ticking as they scored another well-worked try. A lineout for Malvern led to a catch and drive from Malvern’s robust forwards, which was excellently scored by today’s De Novo Risk Man of the Match, Glen Potter. Despite this commanding lead held by Malvern, Spartans didn’t stop working to try and get something out of the game. Some questionable defending from Malvern allowed Spartans to gain territory and get another try, keeping pressure on the home side.

Malvern continued to kick on with two more tries. Another for Wills, as Potter peeled of the side of a maul and offloaded to Rob Cook, who put Wills into the corner for the score, with Luke Milton grabbing his second to top off a positive performance. Shortly after, Spartans managed to grab a consolation through their right winger who scored after a burst of brilliance with a chip and chase.
The score line didn’t reflect the performance of both teams, Spartans were very spirited and persistence until the final whistle making it very difficult for Malvern, nonetheless it was a good for the Vern.
Malvern are on the road next Saturday as they travel to Barkers Butts for a huge clash.

Up The Vern!
