North Wales Individual Championship /
Welsh Merit Winners
The North Wales Individual Championship was first contested in 1926.
In 1927 a cup valued at 50 guineas was presented to the North Wales Counties Association by Messrs Ind Coope Ltd. Nowadays players from all over North Wales still compete against each other to become the Welsh Champion and then go on to represent Wales in the “Champion of Champions” event at the Waterloo Bowling Club in Blackpool. Esclusham Bowling Club have had five Welsh Champions.
Harold Francis 1939
The North Wales Individual Championship Cup states that in 1939 Harold Francis (Coedpoeth) won the competition. However, an Esclusham Club photograph dating from 1939 clearly depicts Harold Francis holding the North Wales Individual Championship Cup as part of an Esclusham team that won the East Denbighshire League in 1939. Also a specific article relating to the competition featured in the Wrexham Leader, August 25th 1939 states that Harold Francis (Coedpoeth, Wrexham) a playing member of the Esclusham team won the North Wales Individual Championship at Deganwy on Saturday August 19th 1939. He beat Joseph Jones 21 -
Tommy Williams 1952
Tommy Williams won the North Wales Individual Championship Cup at the Conservative Club Green, Flint in August 1952 beating S.Rogers 21 -
David A Jones 2000
Dave A Jones won the North Wales Individual Championship Cup at Sychdyn Bowling Club near Mold in July 2000 beating John Langford 21 -
Burton Cup
The Cup was first presented in 1930 and was originally know as the Montague Burton Hospital Cup. In the early days of its existence all the proceeds from this competition were devoted to the Wrexham War Memorial Hospital.
An Esclusham bowler has won this competition on ten occasions. The most recent winner was Ian Dutton in 2009 However, the Club’s first winner was Jack Ratcliffe way back in early September 1934.
The newspaper extract below tells the story.

He then went on to represent Wales at the 100th BCGBA Senior Merit at the Florence Club Stoke on Trent, the Champion of Champions at the Waterloo Blackpool and the WCGBA Champion of Champions at Rhos Park.
The press clippings and photographs below are a summary of three Esclusham Welsh Merit winners from 1939, 1952 and 2000. The Club has also had three runners up: T.Williams (1943) J.P.Evans (1938) and C.Roberts (2014).

F.W.Morris Cup
The F.W.Morris Cup was given to Esclusham Below Bowling Club in 1933 by Mrs Morris.
Mrs Elizabeth Ann Morris was the widow of Frederick William Morris. Mr F.W.Morris was a nephew of William and John Jones who were connected with the Island Green brewery, Wrexham and were philanthropists.
Mrs Morris's obituary states that she gave for many years her generous support to many charitable causes both in the borough and elsewhere. She was particularly interested in Wrexham War Memorial Hospital and a ward was named after her husband there and the name has been retained for one of the wards in the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Massee Bowl
Mrs Massee was a Club Vice President and a local councillor who donated this bowl in 1974. She and her husband kept a grocers shop on Vicarage Hill (opposite Chapel Street). It is not known why she donated the bowl. It is believed that her husband kept a pub in Lancashire which had a bowling green?
