I write to thank you all for your efforts in coaching within the County. Yesterday, at the ASA SW Inter-County Championships Devon won 5 of the 6 Traditional Championship Titles. No County Association has ever achieved such a feat and it is testament to each and every one of your dedication to the sport and the efforts you put into coaching. Please could you forward this email to all helpers and other coaches in your respective Clubs – they too are responsible for Devon having achieved yesterday's victories!
Players from all the Clubs in Devon represented their County yesterday, and a total of 272 athletes competed in what was the largest one-day Water Polo Tournament to have been held in the Country in terms of numbers of participants and matches played.
The results are attached, and I would take this opportunity to make a few comments on individuals who made a particular 'mark' on behalf of the County yesterday.
Under 13 – Amanda Herring (Exeter - Coach) Ian Mair (Devonport - Assistant Coach) Robert Coleman (Devonport - Team Manager)
This was Amanda's first time coaching at this level. As we all know, coaching the 'entry age group' is always a bit of a lottery, and Devon certainly seemed to have a very small size – especially considering Gloucestershire were fielding a 6ft 2 inch 12 year old! Well done to Amanda and Ian for taking on this mantle and Robert for Team Managing.
Under 15 – Tom Manley (Newton Abbot) Bob Whittaker (Barnstaple)
Tom is quite possibly the most promising young goal-keeper I have ever seen coming out of Devon. His technique is superb and he is a real credit to his Club and the County generally. Bob Whittaker was awarded the 'Most Valuable Player' award in this age group yesterday after an inspirational performance against Dorset.
Under 17 Male – Sam Alberici (Newton Abbot)
Sam was also awarded the 'Most Valuable Player' award in his age group yesterday, and has his first British Water Polo League debut playing for Exeter next weekend – definitely 'one to watch'!
Senior Female – Meritxell Manzano (Exeter) Luke Bray (Exeter)
Not exactly a 'product' of Devon, hailing from Barcelona, but I think it is important to note Mertixell's impact on the Ladies side of the sport in Devon since she arrived in 2012. A large number of the U17 Female and Senior Female Team have been playing with Meritxell – she is a national level coach in Spain. As a result the Ladies side of the sport in Devon has had a real resurgence, not only as a result of Meritxell's influence, but more crucially, the appearance of a talented coach in Luke Bray. Yesterday, Luke marshalled the Senior Ladies Team in a way which really demonstrated that he has developed into a coach that can apply tactics to tailor the situation he is faced with. Meritxell performed brilliantly, marking a current Dutch International playing for Gloucestershire 'out of the game' (though the clash did leave some spectators wondering whether it was the Senior Mens or Senior Ladies that was the 'tougher' side of the sport!) and was awarded 'Most Valuable Player' of the Tournament.
I have received a large number of emails thanking me for my efforts, but of course I am simply the 'front man' for yesterday. None of it would have been possible without the involvement of each and every one of you throughout the year coaching at the various Clubs round the county.
Kind regards
Jaggers

James Baker (Jaggers) Head Coach of Devon County Water Polo commented; '…it is really good to see such a spread of young players from across Devon representing their County. It demonstrates not only that all Clubs are developing players of a high standard, but that in the coaches and volunteers taking part the County has a wealth of experience to draw upon…'. There were also some very talented players that did not make it through the trials – in particular the selection for the 16&U Male Goalkeeper was particularly tough with Charlie Flynn (Devonport), Tom Plumridge (Paignton) and Toby Eve (Exeter) being of pretty much an even standard. It took Jaggers to take to the water to fire 30 or so shots at each of them in order to make a final selection!

Congratulations to Devonport. The equilisation will be sorted later in the year with the current leagues.
Following Great Britain’s 3rd place finish in the recent Slowianka 6 team International tournament in Poland the U17 squad travelled to Istanbul on 7th Tuesday May to compete in one of the 4 European Championship qualify tournaments.
GB had drawn a qualifying group with Russia, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Turkey. The top 2 teams would qualify for the finals in Malta during September.
On Thursday GB played favorites Russia first, holding them to just a single goal deficit at the end of Q1. Q2 was drawn 4-4 with Tom Whiting of Newton Abbot scoring a penalty. Russia stepped up their game winning the Q3 4-0 with GB fighting back to draw Q4 2-2. The 6-11 score line was an improvement from a year ago when GB lost 3-14. The Russian side train twice a day and had a 3 weeks camp prior to this competition whereas the GB squad had a monthly weekend camp at Cardiff in comparison.
On the Friday morning GB played the first of 2 games on this day against Bulgaria. GB won Q1 1-0 and Q2 2-1 to lead 3-1 at half time. Q3 was won 4-1 and Q4 drawn 1-1 to win 8-3. That evening GB played Switzerland making a fast start winning Q1 5-0 and Q2 3-0 to have the game won at half time. Q3 was drawn 2-2 and Q4 drawn 1-1 giving a 11-3 winning score.
The final game was against hosts Turkey on the Saturday with only the winners going through to the finals. GB had brought a lot of family and supporters to the tournament but Turkey had vast home support and won Q1 5-3 and Q2 5-0 to lead at half time 10-3. GB rallied to lose Q3 3-2 and draw Q4 3-3. The 8 -16 defeat mean GB finished in 3rd place and thus not qualify. Within the ranks of the Turkish team was a player who already was a professional water polo player.
Ironically if GB had been drawn in the group with France, Belarus, Poland, Israel and Ireland GB may well have qualified as beat Belarus, who finished 2nd, 12-6 in the recent tournament in Poland. The GB coaching team was complimented by the other National team coaches as they felt this was the best GB Junior team in recent years. It has been many years since a Male GB team has qualified for the finals. Tom was in the starting 7 players for every game. Failure to qualify is the end of a 3 year training cycle for the U17 team but Tom has decided to stay within the GB set up and train with the U19 squad who has their European Qualifiers in 2014.Â
There are photos of the 4 GB games on the Turkish Water Polo Federation Facebook page. Enter ‘Turkiye Sutopu Ferderasyonu’ into the search section on facebook. Go to photos and then albums, Tom wore the No 3 hat.
