The rule of thumb
Each site on the Web is controlled by its own webmaster. If you find a page in Google's search results that you'd like to see changed, your best bet is to contact the webmaster and ask him or her to make a change.
For all search results removals, contact the webmaster
In order for information in Google's results to change, the information must first change on the site where it appears, and this is a change that Google's unable to make for you. We run into a lot of people who think that Google runs the Web and controls all the sites on it, but that's really not the case. The sites in Google's search results are controlled by those sites' webmasters.
If you contact the webmaster, he or she has a few options. He or she can remove the concerning information, take the page down from the Web entirely, or block Google from including the page in Google's index. (Are you the webmaster? Learn more about removing your own content from Google.)
Once the webmaster makes a change, your work is done. The change will automatically show up in the search results once Google re-crawls the site. If you're in a hurry, and the page has already been updated, you can submit a request via the Webpage Removal Request Tool, and we'll update our results in a few days. In a few limited cases, Google can provide additional assistance
In most cases, the only way to change a search result is for the webmaster to change the site itself. However, we may be able to help in a few cases including these:
Social security or credit card information in results
If you find a page in Google search results that lists your social security or credit card number, submit a webpage removal request. Google will contact the site's hosting company to request that the page be taken down from the Web. We'll also take steps to remove the information from our search results.
You don't want this information to be anywhere on the Web. So even if Google removes it from the search results, make sure to contact the webmaster directly and tell him or her to remove your information immediately.
Adult content in results, when SafeSearch is enabled
If SafeSearch is enabled, you shouldn't be seeing any adult content in your search results. Let us know if you do by reporting it via the Webpage Removal Request Tool.
Inappropriate images on our featured video results
If a featured video result on the search results page is displaying an inappropriate preview image, report the image in the Web Search Help Forum.
