Hi there,

Your invite is tied to the Google account with which you first logged in. You can change your name (as displayed to other users), but your address will stay the same.

Does that help?

Cheers,

Casey

Casey - In my case - the sandbox was set up under my real name and not my gmail username.  Switching from sandbox to preview - the name did change from my full name to just my first initial.   Then, I did change my display name through the edit profile and it shows the change correctly on the top right and on my contacts box - but my friends are still seeing my real name.  I don't mind the real name showing up now but as I join public waves - it's going to be a problem.

Same question here:

My sandbox account was vanityname@ and my gmail was first.last@gmail.com.
When I accepted my (yay!) invitation it linked to the first.last@ account when I'd much rather use vanityname@.  There was no option to choose or reserve my account name along the way, and no forewarning of it!

I'd love to change the "name" on my Wave account without changing the name on the Gmail account it's linked to.

Similar - I use google apps - so my google account used a full email address.  Now I've been automatically assigned a crazy name as my wave address (one I'd never choose) - how do I change it?

The wave ID is the same as the Google account ID; also this means that the email address in wave is the same as your google address.

I have a somewhat similar problem:
I got an inactive gmail account under the username omry.yadan, and when I first logged into the wave preview it asked me to pick a username. I tried to use omry.yadan but it said it's already in use.
ended up using omry.yadan2, which is frustrating.

Hi,

I recently got my Wave invitation and my wave account was named automatically to are.belong.to.dario@googlewave.com due to be using this ID in my Google Profile URL.

I created this "original" name after trying to get an Google Profile URL that looked cool. Now I'm a nice example of FAIL :) Please, let change our Wave ID or Google Profile ID (in time of creation I didn't find out that it was my ID for every app in Google).

By the way, I can live with that Wave address, but it works like Gmail so somebody can find me writing are.belong.to.dario and arebelongtodario?

Thanks!

I accepted my Wave invite and ended up with a totally different wave address to what I was expecting which seems to have been created based upon my google profile URL. I REALLY want to be able to change this as it's totally not what I would like to use as my Wave address... Help!!!

I agree!!!

I have a Google Apps email address:  myname@myserver.com.  I also had to sign up a Google account with the same email.  But they link it to a google account profile ID, which is supposed to be close to your name I guess..  So I signed up for my invite under myname@myserver.com and when they sent me an invitation to that address, all I could do was hit accept!

Now my Wave ID is my Profile ID.  That doesn't make any sense.  Nor does it allow for us to be creative and have our own branding!  This needs to be changed!!!!

PLEASE!?!?!?!!?

RealtorRyan, I had this same problem with my Google Apps email address. Also, my contact list was blank. Google has a problem with apps domains. They need to combine the Google account myname@mydomain.tld and my Google Apps account myname@mydomain.tld. The same problem exists when using Reader and Blogger.

I had the same problem: i have a google account with my email address (non-gmail) and when accepting my wave invitation, no questions were asked and my address ended up being my google url username, which doesn't make any sense. Please let us change this! When will it be available?

To update my original comment - my profile still lists the correct user name but everyone is still seeing my real name.  When I first posted - my username was showing in the top right and on my contact box.  Now - when I first log in, those spots first show my username @ googlewave . com  and then revert to the first initial of my real name.

I changed manually my Google profile because it changed when I've agreed for the first time a Wave. When I tried to change my username in Wave only, instead of taking the user who I signed up, explained my email address as a username. Now I can't to change the user and in these conditions, I can't use Wave. So, I don't use Wave...
It's a bug or the dev team are creazy?

Not being able to change the address after signing up is a problem. I signed up and was not able to choose what the address is, instead it chose the email address of my emergency backup gmail account (subzero.offline@gmail....), so now my address is subzero.offline@googlewave..., not exactly a "good" address. I have tried deleting the gmail account, but the address in googlewave stays the same.

I strongly suggest google allows us to change the address, or at the very least allows one to choose an address at sign up and allows us preview customers to delete our wave account and recreate it.

I have GoogleApps, which I use for all my communications, calendaring, etc. I have to have a gmail account to get started with GoogleApps, so I do.

Sadly, all of the other Google products are linked to my gmail account profile, and not to my GoogleApps profile. No matter what I do, the two won't combine.

When I received my invitation to my GoogleApps hosted email address, it would only let me sign in to google using the right hand login box (non Google Apps version), hence it associated my GoogleWave with one of the profiles from my gmail account, which is not what I wanted.

I did post some waves, and made 1 of the 9 invites I had to a friend.

I think added a new profile name, as I was unhappy with the random one GoogleWave had selected for me.

Then, all previous Waves were no longer available to me, including the invites wave. I can't invite any more friends or colleagues. Clicking old waves, all I see is:

You are not a participant in this wave.

Hopefully Google can fix this.

I agree, hopefully this is something that can be changed soon.  How's this for a wacky User ID:  mediavoiceovers.com@googlewave.com ?  How many ".com"s can one person stand to type in one address? I'd sure love to at least just remove the ".com" from before the @googlewave.com .

Thanks.

My @googlewave.com name changed when I updated the Profile URL.
It looks like you can only do this once, so choose wisely.

A word of warning though,
by changing your @googlewave.com username you loose access to all your previous waves including the "invite others" wave.
They will still show up in you account but the warning will popup "You are not a participant in this wave."
Thus, I recommend removing all waves before proceeding as you will not beable to afterward..

Please note, google may change this way of changing your username as it has caused a lot of people to file bug reports..

@friendly, how did you change your Google Profile. With the wave "Profile for". Or the Google Profile itself.

the wave "Profile for" works perfectly.

CrazyBliep: Hi. Now it seems works "Edit Profile". However, I not explained -i'm sorry- that was the first, second ... tenth thing I tried when I got to surf the Wave O_O. As it didn't work, I tried from the Google profile. (Really, I even sent screenshoots about this issue)
The username is partially solved since "Edit profile" but the direction in Wave remains my email address without WEBMAIL.com, this nonsense persists.

Yes, but would lose my contacts, which are the same as my email account. You have delete some contacts from the email account if you don't want they are contacts in Wave, is absurd. Are two products! I've sent me an invitation to another account but remains on the list, ain't winds that move this pretty wave.

So - and sorry for confusion - what does all this mean? Is it, or isn't it, possible to change my googlewave ID, i e från jack@ to john@? Alternately, is it possible to keep my old Google/gmail account and use a separate ID for GW, without having tro switch gmail accounts back and forth in the process?

@Hornborg, It seems to me, that if you change your profile name/URL (if you haven't changed it before that is), your google wave ID becomes whatever your profile URL ends with - That seems to be what has happened to me - I still have the unreadable waves, and I can't invite people. What's more: I DISAPPEARED FROM MY CONTACTS CONTACT LIST!!

I had this same issue with Wave taking my Picasa user name.  I couldn't change it on the wave settings, or in my Google profile settings.  I was however able to change my @googlewave.com by adding a new "Profile URL" via the google profile page, then going into picasa and changing the "gallery URL to the one I just created.  I then returned to Google wave and my @googlewave.com email had changed.  I don't understand why it has this stupid secondary email address system, I hope they iron out the bugs in the near future.

DOUBLE NAME problem - my name is "Mary Ellen" (a 2 word FIRST name) and some how googlewave took only MARY from my gmail account.  I am not "Mary" - it took Facebook 2 years to change my name from Mary to Mary Ellen - but it can be done!  I would like to have the option of having my "preferred" id and until such time will not use googlewave as a tool as my colleagues do not know me as "Mary". I hope googlewave can solve this - "it can't be done" just does not seem to be a phrase usually associated with google

I'm having the issue a lot of people have mentioned (I don't like the gmail address I got signed up with) but I'd feel much better about using Wave more at this point if I were confident than when I am able to sign up with a different address, it won't be hard to transfer all of my information to the new one. I know this still doesn't work well on Gmail; Any idea if it well on Wave?

It should be pretty easy to move all your information from one Wave account to another. All your contacts are linked to Google contacts, so you could just export from the one account and into the other. As for Waves, you could simply go through them all on your first account, and add your second account self to each Wave as a participant. That would be pretty much everything as far as I can think of.

You cannot change the email address associated with your Wave account. In other words, you can't change your Wave address. See the post by the Google employee in this thread: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/wave/thread?tid=79d9e14e1cbb4486&hl=en
