Dragging label to open conversation appears to work but does not stick across GMail sessions Report abuse

OS: Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope
Browser: Firefox 3.5.2

When I apply a label to an open conversation by dragging the label to the conversation, everything appears to work fine.  However, the next time I return to GMail (e.g., in a new browser session or even in another tab in the same browser session), the label has been lost.  This seems to be a pretty glaring bug to me, but I did not find anybody else complaining about it in the help forum.  Is this a known issue?  If so, is anything being done to fix it?  Now that I know it's there I can avoid it, but it would be nice if it worked as advertised.  Thanks!

Mike

It may be a browser bug, or a conflict with a Firefox extension.

I am using Ubuntu Jaunty, but I cannot recreate the problem with either Firefox 3.0.13 or Chrome 3.0.198.1

The new label appears on the conversation in another tab, or another browser.

Or it could be a Firefox version issue.  I see it in Windows Firefox 3.5.2 as well.  In fact, I also see it in Windows Chrome 3.0.195.6.  I'm going to see if I can get some friends to try it out at work.

Wow, very odd.  I had a friend try this out, and he did not see the same issue.

I tried logging in with all labs features turned off, and I created a new label, and I could not reproduce the problem.

I logged back in with labs features turned on, and I created a new label, and I could not reproduce the problem.

I tried reproducing the problem as I did originally using my red "Todo" label -- and there it was.  I postulated that the problem was either the red color (it wasn't) or the "Todo" text (which it appears to be).

Can you try creating a "Todo" label and seeing if you have the same problem?  My other labels all seem to stick.  Just the standard red (not a custom color -- I thought that could be it, too, but it doesn't appear to be) label with the name "Todo".  Thanks!

I see this when I drag the red Todo label onto closed messages, too.  I thought it was only open messages before.

I cannot create a Todo label.  I am sure it is an internal label, like "important", and not available.  (You may have created it before it was reserved).

If you try to assign labels with the reserved system names, they do not stick.  Try renaming your label to something else, like Todo! or To-do.  They both work normally.

Aha.  I *have* had that Todo label for quite a while now.  Odd that I'm still able to use it when I use the traditional label application mechanism (the checkbox/dropdown combo), but I'm guessing you're right about Google reserving the word "Todo".  I'll probably take your advice and create a new label.  Thanks!

Thanks for the answer!  I was also having exactly the same problem with my "Important" label.  It turns out this is also a reserved label as well!

Renaming it to "Crucial" fixes the problem!
