  • Great hardware, great performance; happy customer

I bought this along with one of StarTech s eSATA ExpressCard (ECESATA254) for backups of a new ThinkPad. delivered as promised, without a hitch. (I m posting this same review for both products.) So far (several months), the results are even better than I hoped. You can read a more complete write-up of my experience here I m getting over 100 MB/s for some real-world copies, about 61 MB/s for a 74 GB backup. My external setup actually runs slightly faster than my laptop s internal hard drive. This was a relatively inexpensive way to add eSATA speed (ExpressCards are a decent value these days) and RAID reliability to my laptop. I called StarTech several times (for general questions about setup and operation of the two products). Real people answer the phones, and they either know the answer or quickly ask someone who knows. Their support is better than I ve experienced in many years. One thing I didn t mention in the ExpressCard review. There is a popular misconception that a RAID 0 (striped) set will always be faster than a RAID 1 (mirror). But if the controller is designed well, RAID 1 can be faster, because all the data exists on both drives (for reads) and a large enough cache can compensate for the need to write all data to both drives (for writes). I m using RAID 1, and I can see that the two drives appear to be handled independently, if the activity lights are accurate. In any case, it s screaming fast. If you can t tell, I m pleased with these two purchases. Read full review
  • Outstanding!

ESata connection works well for backing up important data (i.e. pictures, music, videos, etc). Raid-1 rebuilds are fast. Drives behave correctly when removed from the array and placed in a different enclosure and tested on other computers. Runs quiet. Read full review
  • good performance for the price

i wanted an enclosure with hardware raid 1 (mirroring). what better way to back things up? setup was pretty easy, although i recommend looking at the updated manual online, as it was clearer. only downside, is it rebuilds a drive that it has detected that was removed by default instead of first checking the data. Highly recommended for the price. Quiet and cool running. Read full review
