Description

A CONTENT AUTHORING AND READING SYSTEM
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a content authoring and reading system which enables authoring and reading written and/or visual contents such as novels, stories, tales, cartoons, mobile education, which have branching (multi-path) feature, via Internet by using mobile communication devices.
Prior Art
Contents with branching (multi path) feature are types of written and/or visual works wherein the readers participate in the content and the course of content is affected by the readers' selections at the end of the paragraphs or pages. The reader may determine the flow of the content by making different selections throughout the content. In these contents, the reader may reach different endings by using the multi path feature of the content in accordance with the questions or advices directed to her/him when s/he reaches to a certain part of the content. This type of contents gives the reader the sense of creating her/his own adventure whereby makes reading the content more fun and exciting. The aim of these types of contents is to show the reader that there will be different behavior and result models as a result of different selections.
Nowadays, there are types of contents which end with different endings in books or in Internet sites. Users can access to these contents that are available in Internet sites via any device that can connect to Internet. However, when one desires to connect to Internet via a mobile communication device, there is no content authoring system complying with and specific to the technical features (screen size, content technology supported, etc.) of each mobile communication device. Furthermore, there is no such system wherein the content authoring systems are used for educational contents. The United States patent document US6893347B1 discloses a system wherein games can be played in the same multi media by mobile communication devices that can connect to Internet and a game scenario can be set up for each group. The said document discloses a system for playing multiple player mobile games via a network (GSM, LAN, WAN, Internet- Web, PLMN, PSTN, Bluetooth etc.), but does not disclose a content authoring and reading system, wherein the content ends with different endings, which has multi path feature and wherein educational contents can also be displayed.
The Japanese patent document JP2001109714A discloses a game system which distributes the information it stores and the image it generates according to the demand received from the mobile communication device. The said patent document discloses a platform related to playing games via a transmission channel, designing the game content, distributing the content and storing the scores of the games; but it does not disclose a content authoring and reading system wherein the content ends with different endings, which has multi path feature and wherein educational contents can also be displayed. Summary of the Invention
The objective of the present invention is to realize a content authoring and reading system wherein written and/or visual contents such as novels, stories, tales, cartoons, mobile education which end with different endings and have multi path feature can be authored via Internet by using any device that can connect to Internet.
Another objective of the present invention is to realize a content authoring and reading system wherein written and/or visual contents such as novels, stories, tales, cartoons, mobile education which have multi path feature can be read via Internet by mobile communication devices. A further objective of the invention is to realize a content authoring and reading system wherein contents that are suitable to their mobile communication devices can be sent to the users by using device management system.

The inventive system (1) for authoring and reading a written and/or visual content such as novels, stories, tales, cartoons, mobile education having multi path feature comprises at least one Internet access device (2), at least one content database (3), at least one mobile communication device (4), at least one main server (5) and at least one device management system (6) (Figure 1). Internet access device (2) is a device which can connect to Internet. When users enter the content authoring and reading system (1) via an Internet access device (2), an interface pops up for logging into the content authoring tool accommodated by the main server (5). The content authoring tool is provided in the main server (5) and enables the users to author content by using multimedia files such as text, audio, animation, picture, etc. The users need a user name and password in order to have their own accounts in the content authoring and reading system (1). Users may log in to the content authoring tool by entering their user names and passwords.
The users log in to the content authoring tool after they open their accounts in the content authoring and reading system (1). In the said tool, users may author a content and send this content to themselves or to other mobile communication device (4) users via Internet, by means of the main server (5), through communication channels such as SMS (short message service), MMS (multimedia message service), e-mail (electronic mail). The users can change, update and delete the contents that they have authored previously, by means of the main server (5). Additionally, the users may send all the contents available in the content authoring and reading system (1) and authored previously, to themselves or to the other users via Internet by means of the main server (5).
The content database (3) is a device where the authored contents are stored. Contents which are requested by users to be read or changed are queried from the content database (3).
The mobile communication device (4) is a device required for the users to be able to open an account via Internet and read the contents that they request from the content database (3). The users can not read the authored contents without their mobile communication devices (4). With the Internet access devices (2) other than the mobile communication device (4), users may only view the contents that they have authored or will author themselves. Users can not read with the said type of Internet access devices (2) the contents which are available in the content database
(3) and authored by other users.
The main server (5) is a device where the content authoring tool is accommodated, the source addresses of the contents such as URL are kept and the user information related to the mobile communication devices (4) of the users are kept.
The device management system (6) determines the hardware and software features of the mobile communication device (4) of the user who has made a content request by checking her/his user name and reports these features to the main server (5). This way, the main server (5) sends content to the user according to the hardware and software features of her/his mobile communication device
(4) ·
The method (7) used in the content authoring and reading system (1) is comprised of the following steps (Figure 2);
opening the content authoring tool provided in the main server (5)
(101),
- logging in (102),
starting to author the content (103),
adding the multimedia files considered necessary for each page of the content and the multimedia objects to reach those files (104), - providing selections of pages or paragraphs into which the required pages or paragraphs of the content will branch (105),
saving the authored content to the content database (3) via the main server (5) (106),
the user requesting the content that s/he wants to read from the content database (3) via the main server (5) (107),
- interrogating whether the content requested from the content database (3) is requested via mobile communication device (4) (108), if the user has requested the content via mobile communication device (4), the main server (5) detecting the user name of the user
(109) ,
if the user requests the content in step 107 by using an Internet access device (2) by means of a non-mobile communication channel, the user entering the user name to the main server (5) as information
(110) ,
- the content requested in step 107 being queried in the content database (3) by the main server (5) (111),
- if the queried content is available in the content database (3), finding out via the device management system (6) the information related to the features of the mobile communication device (4) of the user who has made the content request (112),
the device management system (6) sending the information related to the features of the mobile communication device (4) of the user to the main server (5) (113),
the main server (5) rendering the requested content suitable to the features of the mobile communication device (4) (114), sending the user the link for the content that is suitable to the features of the mobile communication device (4) of the user (115), the user reaching the content by connecting to the link sent to her/him (116),
if the content queried in step 111 is not available in the content database (3), the main server (5) sending the user, who has made the content request, the information that the content is not available
(117).
When content is intended to be authored, the content authoring tool provided in the main server (5) is opened upon connecting to Internet via any Internet access device (2) (101). Hereinafter, users authoring the content will be referred to as writer and users reading the content will be referred to as reader.
After the content authoring tool is opened, an interface pops up where the user name and password of the writer are prompted. The writer enters her/his user name and password and logs in (102).
After it is logged in, an interface pops up for authoring the content. Content is started to be authored in the said interface of the content authoring tool (103). While the content intended to be authored may be a content file that will be newly authored, it may also be a content file that is added previously by the writer. Thus the writer may modify the content files s/he has authored previously, but can not modify the files authored by other writers. When the writer is authoring the content, in addition the text s/he uses, s/he also places picture, video, audio, animation, etc. files to parts that s/he considers necessary and adds the multimedia objects necessary to reach the said files (104).
The writer provides selections of pages or paragraphs into which the pages or paragraphs that are considered necessary within the content will branch (105). Questions are provided to the readers at the end of the pages or paragraphs that are considered necessary for the selections that they will make, whereby the readers are allowed to pass to the pages or paragraphs that they prefer, to continue with the content. The reader selects one of the multimedia objects indicating the different options displayed on the mobile communication device (4) and proceeds with a different path in the content. By means of this branching (multi path) feature of the contents, the readers are allowed to participate in the content, make different selections throughout the content and affect the flow of the content. Each selection of the reader enables the content to end with a different ending and this way, it is shown that different selections of the readers will form different behavior and result models. After placing the content and the multimedia files that complement the said content, the writer saves the authored content (106). The content that is prepared is saved into the content database (3) and made accessible to mobile communication devices (4).
The reader requests the content that s/he wants to read, from the content database (3) via the main server (5), by means of her/his mobile communication device (4) via communication channels such as SMS, MMS, e-mail, etc. or by using Internet access device (2) through the Internet page where the contents are displayed (107).
The main server (5) interrogates whether the content requested from the content database (3) is requested via mobile communication device (4) (108).
If the reader requests the content using her/his mobile communication device (4), the user name is automatically detected by the main server (5) (109). When the reader makes a content request using her/his mobile communication device (4), s/he does not have to enter her/his user name to the main server (5) (109).
If the reader requests the content by using an Internet access device (2) by means of a non-mobile communication channel, s/he enters her/his user name to the main server (5) as information (110). The content requested by the reader is queried by the main server (5) from the content database (3) where the contents are stored (111).
If the queried content is available in the system, information related to the hardware and software features of the mobile communication device (4) of the reader are found out by means of the device management system (6) through the user name (112). The device management system (6) finds out these features by determining the brand and model information of the mobile communication device (4) through the user name.
The device management system (6) sends the information related to the hardware and software features of the mobile communication device (4) of the reader to the main server (5) (113).
The main server (5) renders the requested content suitable to the hardware and software features of the mobile communication device (4) (114).
After rendering the requested content suitable to the hardware and software features of the mobile communication device (4), the main server (5) sends the link where the content is available to the mobile communication device (4) via communication channels such as SMS, MMS, e-mail, etc. (115).
The reader reaches the content by connecting to the link sent to her/him via communication channels such as SMS, MMS, e-mail, etc. (116).
If the requested content is not available in the system, the main server (5) sends the reader the information that the content is not available via communication channels such as SMS, MMS, e-mail, etc. (117).
When the readers are reading the content that they have requested from the main server (5), the main server (5) saves the place that the readers left reading and enables the readers to start reading next time from where they had left. Additionally, during the course of content reading, the main server (5) displays the previous paths that the readers have followed until that moment and the history any time desired, allows the readers to return to the previous selection points, and enables the readers to pass to different pages or paragraphs by allowing them to change their preferences. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, cellular phones are used as mobile communication devices (4) and the phone number of the cellular phone is used as the user name. In the said embodiment, the device management system (6) checks the cellular phone numbers of the mobile communication devices (4) of the users who have made the content requests, determines the brand and model of these mobile communication devices (4) and reports it to the main server (5). This way, the brand and model information of the mobile communication devices (4) of the readers who have made the content request are checked, the requested content is rendered suitable to the hardware and software features of the mobile communication devices (4) and are sent to the readers.
In one embodiment of the invention, the contents can be authored by the operator who is the main server (5) administrator. In the said embodiment, in addition to authoring content, the operator may update and delete from the content database (3) all contents which are authored previously by the writers and the operator.
In one embodiment of the invention, the content authoring and reading system (1) is used for authoring and reading mobile education contents. Thus, the readers can rapidly reach educational contents and can reach the desired information in a short time by means of the branching (multi path) feature of the contents.
The inventive content authoring and reading system (1) is developed for authoring and reading contents which preferably end with different endings. Although this kind of content types has been developed based on Internet, there is no application of this for mobile environment and devices. A common application can not be developed and thus problems arise due to the fact that mobile communication devices (4) having different technical features such as screen size, memory, processor, etc. do not run on a single platform, and they support different operation systems and different programming types. The said problems are solved by means of the device management system (6) used in the inventive content authoring and reading system (1). By means of using the content authoring and reading system (1) in mobile communication devices (4), contents ending with different endings are made accessible anytime anywhere. In addition to the classical books and Internet environment, access to contents with different endings is provided via mobile communication devices (4) which have much wider usage, and the number of people preparing the contents is increased, whereby the contents prepared are allowed to reach large masses.
It is possible to develop a wide variety of embodiments of the inventive "A Content Authoring and Reading System (1)". The invention cannot be limited to the examples described herein and it is essentially according to the claims.
