Abstract
Femoral neck of the removable type 1 with stem 2 for hip prostheses, engaging in a complementary manner with a cavity of the stem 2 and provided with two lugs 5, 5a which are oriented and positioned so that by inserting an extractor with two prongs having walls converging towards said lugs, the said walls bear against the surface of each lug and the upper surface of the stem 2, exerting, as a result of the inclined-plane effect, a thrust F having a direction parallel to the axis of the cavity able to cause disengagement of the removable neck 1 from the stem 2.
Description
Removable femoral neck with stem for hip prostheses.
The present invention relates to the technological sector of hip prostheses and concerns in particular a removable femoral neck with stem for prostheses as described in the preamble of Claim 1.
As is known to experts in the technical sector concerned, removable femoral necks for hip prostheses terminate at the bottom in a tapered part which is inserted with engagement in a complementary cavity formed in the top end of the stem. Said solution has constituted a major development in the sector of orthopaedic surgery, replacing the so-called monobloc system where the neck and stem were formed as one piece.
The removable neck allows a prosthesis implant to be adapted to the different anatomical characteristics of the patient, offering moreover the major advantage of being able to replace the neck both during the first surgical operation and on subsequent occasions without having to remove the stem from its seat.
Orthopaedic surgeons have established, however, that on some occasions, when operating on a prosthesis which has been used for a certain period of time, the removable neck remains stuck inside the cavity of the stem owing to a greater cohesion which occurs during the course of its use. This makes the operation of extracting the neck from the stem extremely difficult and it is not always possible to solve the problem using extractors of the conventional type which employ an operating principle which is similar to that of an ordinary corkscrew.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a solution to the abovementioned problem in the form of a removable femoral neck with a stem having technical characteristics such as to facilitate separation of the neck from the stem.
The subject of the invention therefore makes use of the known "inclined-plane" physical principle, in order to develop the forces necessary for separation of the
stem, ensuring at the same time - something which is very important to avoid jamming - also the directionality of said forces which are thus aligned with respect to the cavity of the stem formed in its top end.
The invention envisages that the neck is provided with two lugs which are oriented and directed so as to allow an extractor means, such as, for example, a two-prong fork, to perform easy separation of the neck from the stem.
The invention will now be clarified more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings which show schematically a preferred practical embodiment provided solely by way of a non-limiting example in that technical or constructional variations may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 shows the removable neck 1 inserted in the cavity 4 of the stem 2 positioned inside the femur in a front view which also shows the two lugs 5, 5a with which the neck 2 is provided.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the removable neck 1 with insertion of an extractor able to disengage said neck 1 from the stem 2 owing to the inclined-plane effect, this effect also commonly being referred to as "wedge effect".
If one considers the abovementioned Figure 1, it is possible to see a removable neck 1 which has a tapered bottom part 3, inserted inside a stem 2 force-fitted inside a cavity 4 which substantially complements the tapered part 3 of said neck 1 formed in the stem 2.
The body of the removable neck 2, along the non-tapered part 3, is provided with two lugs 5 and 5a which are oriented substantially in a perpendicular manner with respect to the axis of the cavity inside which the neck is inserted; moreover, said lugs 5 and 5a have a form and position suitable for inserting an extractor means
E, in the form of a fork with two prongs which have walls converging towards said lugs 5 and 5a.
Said walls, during extraction of the neck, bear against the surface of the lugs 5 and 5a and the surface forming part of the stem 2, exerting as a result of the inclined-plane physical effect a thrust F in a direction parallel to the axis of the cavity, as shown in Figure 2, able to cause extraction of the removable neck from the stem.
In the preferred embodiment the lugs are formed longitudinally on the body of said neck 1 and at a distance h from the stem such as to allow entry of the prongs of the extractor E; in a second embodiment said lugs are formed transversely on the body of the removable neck 1.
The advantages of the invention compared to the known solutions are as follows: simple extraction of the neck and a smaller force to be applied for extraction of the neck owing to the inclined-surface effect.
