Description

NAVIGATION DEVICE PROGRAMMED TO DOWNLOAD MULTI-DAY EPHEMERIS DATA
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1 Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a GPS navigation device programmed to download multi-day ephemens data; the navigation device uses this satellite information to determine position. The term 'GPS' includes similar satellite based systems, such as Galileo.
2. Description of the Prior Art
A typical GPS navigation device needs to download a model of the satellite orbit and clock data from each GPS satellite that it is using; this model is known as the ephemens data. Each GPS satellite broadcasts an ephemens data set once every 30 seconds; each ephemens data set is typically valid for between 2 — 4 hours. It takes at least 18 seconds to download this data from a particular satellite, but frequently much longer if satellite reception is poor (e.g. urban areas where there is limited sky visibility). For example, it can easily take 5 minutes or more to achieve a 'time to first fix' — i e. the time taken from switch on to getting an accurate position fix, this can be very frustrating to a driver, who might reasonably expect to be able to enter a destination into his navigation device just before setting off in his vehicle and to be given route instructions immediately But before the ephemens data is downloaded from several satellites, the device cannot work out its current position and hence cannot provide reliable route guidance So the driver has to either wait for several minutes before setting off, or simply drive without guidance until the ephemens data is fully received and processed and the device able to locate itself.
There have been several solutions to this First, Assisted GPS (or A-GPS) as descnbed in US 4445118 In A-GPS, a terrestrial GPS receiver station that has good sky visibility collects the regularly broadcast ephemens data from satellites; it then re-transmits this to navigation devices over, typically, a cellular wireless or FM link The limitations of A- GPS are that the cellular wireless or FM link may be unreliable and also that the ephemens data that is broadcast by the terrestrial station is just the same data that is being broadcast by the satellites themselves and hence only relevant for 2 — 4 hours. US 6560534 addresses in part these concerns in a system that calculates multi-day ephemeris data and then transmits this multi-day data to navigation devices, the term 'multi-day' refers to the fact that the long term data that is sent typically covers 7 days or more of ephemeris trajectory and clock information This data is calculated, as opposed to merely being a re-transmission of the data sent by the satellites themselves (However, in essence, any system that can broadcast ephemeris data for 1 or more days in advance is useful and the term 'multi-day' should be construed to cover any term or duration substantially longer than the 2-4 hour duration of ephemeris data normally broadcast by GPS satellites.)
One implementation detail that the prior art has not fully addressed however is what in practice will trigger the multi-day ephemeπs data to be loaded onto the navigation device. As the recent surge in popularity in portable navigation devices for the automotive sector demonstrates, as exemplified by the TomTom range of navigation devices, simplicity is a key aspect of a successful product, particularly one that is meant for the mass market and not for early adopters But achieving simplicity can be, perhaps counter-intuitively, one of the hardest things to achieve when designing consumer electronics products (see for example "The Simplicity Shift" by Scott Jenson ISBN 052152749 for a discussion of this topic)
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention is a navigation device programmed to download multi-day ephemeris data from a computer server, the device displaying an indication of the status of the multi-day ephemeris data stored on the device
Because the status of the multi-day ephemeris data is made explicit, the user can have a better understanding of what multi-day ephemeris data is present on the device In particular, displaying an indication of the status could include
• displaying an indication of the freshness of the multi-day ephemeris data stored on the device, and/or
• displaying an indication that fresh ephemeris data should be downloaded, and/or
• displaying an indication that multi-day ephemeris data can be downloaded to the device and that doing so would decrease the time to first fix
The indication itself can be a graphical indication (such as an icon) and/or can include textual indication
In one implementation, the device displays an option that, if selected by a user, causes fresh multi day ephemeris data to be transferred to the device from the computer server Another option causes fresh multi-day ephemeris data to be transferred to the device from the computer server at predefined time intervals as an automatic background process A further option causes fresh multi-day ephemeris data to be transferred to the device from the computer server an automatic background process whenever the device determines it needs that fresh data as The option(s) can include a button and /or a graphical button In a pieferred implementation, the device includes a touch screen display and the option is selected by a user touching the option shown on the display This greatly facilitates the timely acquisition of multi-day ephemeris, but without the dangers of making that process completely hidden from the user the danger resides mainly in the fact that if the multi-day ephemeris acquisition fails for whatever reason (e g the user forgets to do a weekly re-fresh) then the user may become irritated that the time to quick fix has increased to perhaps 5 or more minutes, without realising it is because the device no longer has any multi-day ephemeris data it can use The device can also display a notification that it is downloading multi-day ephemeπs data
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 shows a portable navigation device, Figure 2 shows a screen shot from such a device,
Figures 3 — 6 depict the icons/text displayed that indicate the status of multi-day ephemens data,
Figure 7 depicts a menu screen showing various options relating to updating the multi- day ephemeπs data on the device,
Figure 8 is a screen shot from the device showing a menu screen that includes an option relating to updating the multi-day ephemeris data on the device
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
If GPS coverage is lost for a few hours, then the GPS receiver in a navigation device must re -acquire the satellites from a 'cold-start' using an 'almanac', this is data stored on the device that gives approximate satellite positions An almanac stored on a typical portable navigation device can cover several months of approximate satellite position data Almanac data is pre-stored on a navigation device at the factory, and is also transmitted by each GPS satellite, enabling the internal almanac data to be kept up to date Using the almanac data and knowledge of the current time, the GPS receiver knows approximately where in the sky to search foi satellites, once it locks onto a satellite, it can download the ephemeris data from that satellite, this is very accurate orbit trajectory and clock correction data and is needed for precise positioning But locking on and downloading ephemeris data takes at least 30 seconds from a 'cold-start' in optimal conditions In real-world conditions of limited sky visibility, it can take 5 minutes or more from switching on the device to getting an accurate location fix (time to first fix) An implementation of the present invention will typically reduce this time to first fix to just a few seconds This is achieved by calculating multi-day ephemeπs data and storing this on a server, the navigation device can then acquire it from the servei There are 2 basic methods of acquisition from the server first, the device can include a connector port that enables it to be connected to an internet connected PC, the multi-day ephemeris data is downloaded to the device via the PC from a remote web site This is implemented in the TomTom Home service Using this service, the user connects the navigation device to the PC typically once a week and downloads the ephemeπs data via the PC, the navigation device can itself show an indication of the status of the multi-day ephemeπs data stored on the device when it is connected to the PC for example, it might
• display an indication of the freshness of the multi-day ephemens data stored on the device, and/or
• display an indication that fresh ephemens data should be downloaded, and/or
• display an indication that multi-day ephemens data can be downloaded to the device and that doing so would decrease the time to first fix
The indication itself can be a graphical indication (such as an icon) and/or can include textual indication
The navigation device could also display an option that, if selected by a user, causes fresh multi-day ephemens data to be transferred to the device from the computer server when it connects to the PC The option can include a button and /or a graphical button In a preferred implementation, the device includes a touch screen display and the option is selected by a user touching the option shown on the display
All of the above indications and options could also (or alternatively) appear on the screen of the PC, so that the user can interact with the PC and not merely the navigation device
The other approach is for the navigation device to include a short range wireless transceiver (e g Bluetooth) and for the device to download the multi-day ephemeris data from a mobile telephone that itself obtains that data over the air (e g using GPRS) A related approach is where the navigation device includes a wireless transceiver (e g GPRS, 3G etc) and the device downloads the multi-day ephemeris data itself over the air using the transceiver. The indications and options discussed above then appear just on the navigation device itself.
In one implementation, the device runs SiRFInstantFrx CLM (client location manager) software; the latest ephemeris data file is downloaded from a SGEE computer server using a proxy. A .ee "ephemeris extension" file is then passed to the CLM, which takes care of communications with the GPS hardware. The HTTP GET protocol is used. Additional data is passed as a parameter in the request and NAT (network address translation) as XML. It will be decided on the server side whether to update the file or not. For this, the following protocol will be used- the client requests the latest version and supplies its own version number. If no file is present on the client, its version number will be -1. The server responds to this with a version number of the .sea file that is available on the server. If this number is 0, it means that nothing has to be done. A positive number is the version of the .sea file that the client has to request. Now the client will do a request for the version that is supplied by the server if necessary. The version of the .sea file on the SD card will be stored in a separate file.
The CLM is wrapped in a software layer that takes care of the communication with the GPS receiver, which loads the .ee file (if present) into memory and informs the GPS chip of the deposition of the satellites. Thus the GPS chip does not have to receive this information from the satellites themselves using the very low bandwidth and unreliable connection towards them. It will communicate with the application via a named pipe (/dev/gpspipe or /var/run/gpspipe). The wrapper will create the pipe and if it exists, the application will read the GPS data from this pipe. If the pipe does not exist the application reads the GPS data from a serial port connected to the GPS chip The chip must be configured accordingly (NMEA mode).. The application will take care of the communication with the proxy server for the retrieval of the sea file.
When the navigation device is in use, it can also display an indication of the status of the multi-day ephemeris data. For example, the navigation device can:
• display an indication of the freshness of the multi-day ephemeris data stored on the device; and/or
• display an indication that fresh ephemeris data should be downloaded; and/or • display an indication that multi-day ephemeris data can be downloaded to the device and that doing so would decrease the time to first fix.
The indication itself can be a graphical indication (such as an icon) and/or can include a textual indication. The indication could be superimposed over the moving map itself or be included in the navigation bar that runs across the screen. For example, Figure 1 depicts a portable navigation device, the TomTom Go, together with the suction mount that can be used to secure the device to a car windscreen. In normal navigation mode use, the device generates an image on its display formed into two sections, as shown in Figure 2; the upper section 21 is a moving map. The lower bar 22 is a navigation bar and includes various information, such as the next turn direction, the distance to the next turn, the name of the next street to be turned into, the current speed and the GPS signal strength. When the device is starting up from cold and does not have the ephemeris data needed for navigation, then typically the moving map area will be static or greyed out and the GPS signal strength indicators will show no bars. In an implementation of the present invention, the GPS signal strength indicator is supplemented with information relating to the status of the multi-day ephemeris data. Various alternatives are shown in Figures 3 - 6. In Figure 3, the GPS signal strength indicator is supplemented with the text "3 days QuickFix", indicating that the ephemeris data should be updated in no more than 3 days time (QuickFix is the TomTom name for the multi- day ephemeris system that allows a quicker time to first fix). The next day, this will read: "2 days QuickFix". In Figure 4, the extent of valid multi-day ephemeris data is shown in a graphical bar format; the darker portion gradually decreases in length. In Figure 5, the GPS signal strength indicator is shown greyed out because the device is still obtaining this data: as a reminder to a user that QuickFix is a solution to the problem of slow time to first fix, the message "Searching for satellite data: QuickFix will reduce this to 10 seconds". In Figure 6, the warning message under the GPS signal strength indicator is: "QuickFix: update asap!".
For each of the Figure 3, 4 and 5 scenarios, the user can touch the words under the GPS signal strength indicator; doing so causes the Figure 7 QuickFix Set Up window to appear; four options are then presented to the user, each of which can be selected by touching an associated button: "Update satellite data now"; "Update satellite data now and every week", "Update satellite data automatically" , and "Update only when docked to TomTom Home" (TomTom Home is the desktop connectivity suite that allows die navigation device to download updated maps, multi-day ephemeπs data, patches etc from a server via a PC) Selecting either of the first two options wiH trigger an immediate fresh download of multi-day ephemeπs data if the device has an in-built GPRS or 3G transceiver or can connect via Bluetooth to a mobile telephone with GPRS or 3G capability Selecting the third option, "Update satellite data automatically", will cause the device to download multi-day ephemeris data as and when needed (e g when there is 1 day of data left) Selecting the fourth option, "Update only when docked to TomTom Home", causes the device to download multi-day ephemeris data whenever it is docked with the PC running TomTom Home,
Figure 8 shows another user interaction possibility on the navigation device, it is possible to subscribe to various services, for example downloading weather information etc This is done using a Bluetooth transceiver in the device, communicating with a GPRS enabled mobile telephone that obtains data from a remote server Other variants are possible- such as incorporating a GPRS/ 3G etc transceiver directly into the navigation device One feature option in the Figure 8 menu screen is "Enable wireless data" When this is selected, then it is possible for all wireless data services, including the download of multi-day ephemeris data, to be enabled automatically as a background process
Another implementation detail is that the ephemeris data sent from the server is encoded and suitable for use only on a particular device In terms of form factor, the device could be
• a PND (portable navigation device, like TomTom GO)
• an embedded in-car navigation device
• a portable device designed for walkers, runners or cyclists
• a mobile telephone
