Abstract

The present invention provides a wraparound lacing system for use with footwear. The lacing system includes a lace (118) which encircles the housing (104) of the article of footwear (100) in a spiral, helical, coiled or similar wound wraparound pattern. The housing (104) includes finger members or projections (112) which independently adjust to the contours of the wearer's foot while providing a snug and secure fit. The housing (104) of the upper (104a) and the midsole (104b) includes channels (116) therein which receive the wraparound lace (118) . The lace (118) can be affixed at one or both ends to the midsole (104b) or to the upper (104a) . Removable lace end keepers (124) on the upper (104a) permit the user to adjust the length of the lace (118) . Recessed cavities (1000) may be positioned along the lacing channels (116) to promote easy adjustment of the lace (118) . The lace (118) may run along channels (1161, 61O1) formed between fingers and an overlying shell structure (6061) . The lace (118) may run through a tube structure (6121) within the channels (1161, 61O1) .

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS

1. An article of footwear, comprising: an outsole having a first surface for contacting the ground and second surface remote from the first surface,- and a housing including an integral one piece upper and midsole defining an enclosure for receiving a wearer's foot, the upper having medial and lateral sides and having at least one projection affixed to the midsole on the medial side and at least one projection affixed to the midsole on the lateral side, the upper including a lace channel on the medial side and a lace channel on the lateral side, the midsole having a first surface adjacent the enclosure and a second surface remote from the enclosure and connected to the second surface of the outsole .
2. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the midsole includes a base lace channel operatively coupled to the medial and lateral side lace channels.
3. The article of footwear of claim 1 or claim 2, further comprising an endcap disposed on the upper adjacent to either the medial side lace, channel or the lateral side lace channel.
4. The article of footwear of claim 3, wherein the endcap is removably disposed on the upper.
5. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a lace wound through the base lace channel, the medial side lace channel and the lateral side lace channel from a first point of the housing to a second point of the housing.
6. The article of footwear of claim 5, wherein a first end of the lace is secured to the first point of the housing by the endcap .
7. The article of footwear of claim 5, wherein the lace is wound in a spiral configuration around the housing. TIMBER 033
8. The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein the base lace channel includes a recess at one end thereof for receiving a second end of the lace .
9. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the upper further comprises a heel support having a heel lace channel therein, the lace also being wound through the heel lace channel.
10. The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein the base lace channel, the medial side lace channel and the lateral side lace channel each comprise a plurality of lace channels, the lace being wound through each of the base, medial side and lateral side lace channels .
11. The article of footwear of claim 3, further comprising a second endcap for securing a second end of the lace, the first endcap being disposed on the upper adjacent to a first one of the medial or lateral side lace channels, and the second endcap being disposed on the upper adjacent to a second one of the medial or lateral side lace channels.
12. The article of footwear of claim 11, further comprising a midpoint cap disposed on the upper adjacent to a second one of the medial or lateral side lace channels between the first and second endcaps, wherein a .first segment of the lace between the first endcap and the midpoint cap has a first lace pressure and a second segment of the lace between the midpoint cap and the second endcap has a second lace pressure.

The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the medial and lateral projections each comprise a plurality of projections, each of the medial side projections including a corresponding one of the medial side lace channels and each of the lateral side projections including a corresponding one of the lateral side lace channels . 14. The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein the number of medial side projections is different from the number of lateral side projections .

The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein the second surface of the outsole is bonded to the second surface of the midsole with a bonding agent, the base lace channel is disposed in the second surface of the midsole, and the second surface of the outsole includes a bonding identifier positioned complementary to the base lace channel to identify a region of the second surface of the outsole that is not coated with the bonding agent.
16. The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein the base lace channel is molded into the second surface of the midsole and the second surface of the outsole includes a molded channel aligned with the base lace channel .

The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein a lace is wound through the base lace channel, the medial side lace channel and the lateral side lace channel from a first point of the housing to a second point of the housing to substantially encircle the wearer's foot, and tension of the lace may be adjusted by un- securing the endcap, changing the length of the lace, and re- securing the first end of the lace with the endcap.

The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein a lace is wound through the base lace channel, the medial side lace channel and the lateral side lace channel from a first point of the housing to a second point of the housing to substantially encircle the wearer's foot, and tension of the lace may be adjusted by winding or unwinding the lace with the endcap.

The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein a first portion of the medial side lace channel is disposed along an outer surface of the medial side projection and a second portion of the medial side lace channel is disposed along an inner surface of the medial side projection, and a first portion of the lateral side lace channel is disposed along an outer surface of the lateral side TIMBER 033
projection and a second portion of the lateral side lace channel is disposed along an inner surface of the lateral side projection.
20. The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein the base lace channel connects to the medial and lateral side lace channels to form a continuous lace channel .
21. The article of footwear of claim 2, further comprising: a lace wound through the base lace channel , the medial side lace channel and the lateral side lace channel from a first point of the housing to a second point of the housing to generally surround and encircle the wearer's foot, a first end of the lace being secured to a first connection point on the housing and a second end of the lace being secured to a second connection point on the housing.
22. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the article of footwear is a water shoe.
23. The article of footwear of claim 21, wherein the first and second connection points are disposed in the midsole.
24. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising an endcap disposed on the upper adjacent to one of the medial side lace channel or the lateral side lace channel for securing the first end of the lace at the first connection point.
25. The article of footwear of claim 3, wherein the endcap is coupled to the upper so that tension of the lace may be adjusted.
26. The article of footwear of claim 21, further comprising a lace keeper removably coupled to the lace adjacent to the medial side lace channel or the lateral side lace channel between the first and second connection points for adjusting tension of the lace.
27. The article of footwear of claims 1, wherein the outsole is integrally molded with the housing. TIMBER 033
28. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a stiffening member disposed between the midsole and the outsole.
29. The article of footwear of claim I1 wherein the first surface of the outsole includes quad cut siping for wet and dry- traction.
30. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the upper includes an integral toe guard that substantially covers the toes of the wearer ' s foot .
31. The article of footwear of claim 30, wherein the toe guard includes a screen disposed over a ventilation hole to prevent entry of debris into the enclosure.
32. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a footbed for contacting the wearer's foot, the footbed being disposed in the enclosure .
33. The article of footwear of claim 32, wherein the footbed is removable.
34. The article of footwear of claim 32, wherein the footbed and the midsole form an integral unitary structure .
35. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a toe stem including a base and a separate top, the base having a pedestal disposed in the midsole and a tubular body connected to the pedestal, the top being disposed in one of the medial side projection or the lateral side projection and having a through-hole therein, whereby the lace is run through the tubular body of the base and the through-hole of the top to connect the base and the pedestal .
36. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein: the upper further includes a heel support and a toe cover, the medial side projection comprises a plurality of medial side projections extending away from the midsole, and the lateral TIMBER 033
side projection comprises a plurality of lateral side projections extending away from the midsole, at least some of the medial and lateral side projections include lace channels therein, the heel support includes a channel therein, and the midsole includes a plurality of channels therein; a lace wound generally in a spiral pattern through the heel support channel, the midsole channels, the medial side channels and the lateral side channels from a first point of the housing to a second point of the housing to generally surround and encircle the wearer's foot, a first end of the lace being positioned at a first connection point on the housing and a second end of the lace being positioned at a second connection point on the housing; a footbed disposed over the first surface of the midsole; and an endcap disposed on the upper adjacent to one of the medial side or lateral side channels at the first connection point, the first end of the lace being secured at the first connection point by the endcap .
37. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising: a bootie generally disposed within the enclosure and adapted to substantially encompass the wearer's foot, the bootie including a bottom surface positioned over the midsole and sidewalls attached to the bottom surface, wherein the footbed is removably positioned within the bootie.
38. The article of footwear of claim 37, wherein the bootie is removable.
39. The article of footwear of claim 37, wherein the bootie further includes at least one finger pull that enables the wearer to pull the article of footwear on or off or to remove the bootie from the article of footwear.
40. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising at least one of a lace pull and a lace lock attached to the lace, the lace pull being operable to secure a portion of the lace to the TIMBER 033
article of footwear and the lace lock being operable to adjust tension of the lace.
41. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the first surface of the outsole includes at least one elongated, raised ridge member for removing water from the ground and providing enhanced traction.
42. The article of footwear of claim 41, wherein the at least one elongated, raised ridge member comprises a plurality of elongated, raised ridge members arranged in a substantially parallel direction from a medial side to a lateral side of the outsole.
43. The article of footwear of claim 41, wherein the at least one elongated, raised ridge member comprises a plurality of elongated, raised ridge members, a first one of the members being arranged transversely across the outsole, a second one of the members being arranged longitudinally along the outsole, and a third one of the members being arranged in a non-transverse and non- longitudinal direction along the outsole.
44. An article of footwear, comprising: an outsole having a first surface for contacting the ground and second surface remote from the first surface,- a housing defining an enclosure for receiving a wearer's foot, the housing having a base connected to the second surface of the outsole and medial and lateral sides connected to the base with a projection disposed on the medial side extending away from the base and a projection disposed on the lateral side extending away from the base for securing the wearer's foot, the medial and lateral side projections including respective medial and lateral side lace channels therein, and a lace wound through the medial and lateral side lace channels, the medial and lateral side lace channels being adapted to slideably receive the lace therein.
45. The article of footwear of claim 44, further comprising a recessed cavity disposed along a respective one of the medial and TIMBER 033
lateral side lace channels for providing access to the lace to slideably adjust the lace within the respective channel.
46. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity is generally arcuate in shape.
47. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity comprises a plurality of recessed cavities, a first one of the recessed cavities being disposed adjacent to the medial side lace channel of the upper and a second one of the recessed cavities being disposed adjacent to the lateral side lace channel of the upper .
48. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity is disposed adjacent to the outsole.
49. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity is positioned substantially symmetrically about a selected one of the medial and lateral side lace channels.
50. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity is positioned asymmetrically about a selected one of the medial and lateral side lace channels.
51. The article of footwear of claim 50, wherein the medial side lace channel is positioned in the medial side projection and the lateral side lace channel is positioned in the lateral side projection.
52. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the medial side lace channel runs longitudinally along the medial side projection and the lateral side lace channel runs longitudinally along the lateral side projection.
53. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising: a recessed cavity disposed along one of the medial and lateral side channels; and TIMBER 033
a lace wound through the medial side channel and the lateral side channel, a first end of the lace being secured to a first connection point on the article of footwear and a second end of the lace being secured to a second connection point on the article of footwear; wherein the recessed cavity provides immediate access for slideably adjusting the lace within at least one of the medial and lateral side channels by a user of the article of footwear.
54. The article of footwear of claim 53, wherein the first connection point is positioned between the enclosure and the outsole and the second connection point is disposed on the medial side projection or the lateral side projection.
55. The article of footwear of claim 53, wherein the medial side projection comprises a plurality of medial side projections each having a medial side channel thereon and the lateral side projection comprises a plurality of lateral side projections each having a lateral side channel thereon, and the recessed cavity comprises a plurality of recessed cavities, at least some of the recessed cavities being disposed adjacent to at least some of the medial side channels and to at least some of the lateral side channels .
56. The article of footwear of claim 53, wherein the recessed cavity is at least partly circular in shape.
57. The article of footwear of claim 53, wherein the lace wraps through all of the midsole, medial side and lateral side channels .
58. The article of footwear of claim 53, wherein the lace is configured to wrap about medial, lateral and base portions of the wearer's foot from a forefoot region of the foot to an arch region of the foot .
59. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity has a concave surface . TIMBER 033
60. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the medial and lateral side lace channels cover at least 50% of the cross- sectional surface of the lace.
Sl. The article of footwear of claim 45, wherein the recessed cavity is configured to expose at least 67% of the cross-sectional surface of the lace.
62. The article of footwear of claim 1 or claim 44, further comprising a shell structure disposed over at least part of the housing and having medial and lateral layers disposed on the medial and lateral side projections, the medial layer at least partly covering the medial side lace channel and the lateral layer at least partly covering the lateral side lace channel.
63. The article of footwear of claim 62, wherein the medial layer includes a medial side lace channel aligned with the medial side lace channel of the medial side projection, and the lateral layer includes a lateral side lace channel aligned with the lateral side lace channel of the lateral side projection so that a first portion of a lace is received between the respective medial side lace channels and a second portion of the lace is received between the respective lateral side lace channels.
64. The article of footwear of claim 62, further comprising a tube structure for enclosing the lace and being at least partly disposed between the medial side lace channel of the housing and the medial side lace channel of the shell structure or between the lateral side lace channel of the housing and the lateral side lace channel of the shell structure .
65. The article of footwear of claim 1 or claim 44, further comprising: a base lace channel disposed along the base or midsole of the housing and connected to the medial and lateral side lace channels; and TIMBER 033
a tube structure for enclosing a lace and running partly or entirely from the medial side lace channel through the base lace channel and through the lateral side lace channel.
66. The article of footwear of claim 62, wherein: the shell structure includes a set of medial layer projections and a set of lateral layer projections, each of the medial layer projections covering a respective one of the set of medial side projections, each of the lateral layer projections covering a respective one of the set of lateral side projections, the medial layer projections at least partly covering respective medial side lace channels and the lateral layer projections at least partly covering respective lateral side lace channels.
61. The article of footwear of claim 66, further comprising an endcap disposed on the housing adjacent to one of the medial or lateral side lace channels, a first end of the lace being adjustably secured to the endcap.
68. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a cleat member connected to the housing for securing a portion of the lace .
69. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of lace guides, each of the lace guides being disposed on one of the medial or lateral side projections of the housing.
