Description

Game Apparatus with Multi-Section Display
This invention relates to game apparatus with a multi-sectional display.
Game playing apparatus of the "fruit machine" type is well known and in its simplest form includes a display comprising a window whereat is displayed a matrix of symbols, usually nine such symbols in a 3x3 matrix. These symbols may particularly in older apparatus comprise symbols on the periphery of three reels which are rotated and brought to rest randomly to display symbols at the window. A win is signalled by the alignment identical selected symbols along the middle one of the three horizontal lines of symbols when brought to rest, and different win values are often applied to alignments of particular symbols, with one symbol, e.g. a "bar" or a
"bell" being accorded a higher value than others. In some games, lower value prizes may be awarded for diagonal alignments of certain symbols.
In the UK5 the maximum amount which can be staked on a single game is set by law depending upon the venue in which the games playing apparatus is housed. Public houses and open access arcades are limited to a fixed maximum stake per game, whilst for restricted access premises such as members clubs and licensed casinos, the limit is higher. Accordingly, the maximum prize which is awarded for a win is proportionally limited. For many players however the appeal of a game lies in the highest potential prize value, even if the odds in favour of winning are reduced with respect to lower prize value games, and it has accordingly been an objective of many game playing apparatus manufactures to add interest to the basic fruit machine game by adding features such as supplementary games to enable the placing of multiple stakes, and thus the payment of higher value prizes. In recent years, it has become commonplace to replace electromechanically operated rotary symbol wheels or drums by a simulated display made possible by microprocessors and video screens. This has also made feasible multiple and segmented displays and sequences of games using different displays in sequence which can provide the desired multiplier capability to permit multiple stakes in parallel or sequential games which correspondingly enhanced prize value.
An object of the present invention is to provide a game apparatus of the kind comprising a display showing a multiplicity of windows each adapted to exhibit a fruit machine game, wherein the display also includes features which show the outcome of each chance.
The invention accordingly provides game playing apparatus comprising a display said display being adapted to show a plurality of windows, each of which simulates a separate fruit machine game, all to be played concurrently with each other, the apparatus including means to play each simulated fruit machine game concurrently, with the outcome of each game being determined separately, and means to award points for each game according to the outcome, and for summing the total of the points awarded as a result of each winning chance, to arrive at a multiplier factor, means for calculating a prize value by multiplying and declared basic prize value by multiplying a declared basic prize unit value by said multiplier factor and means for paying out the total prize so awarded.
The windows in the display may be arranged as a rectangular matrix of nine or more windows, for example twenty windows arranged in five ranks of four windows each, and four files of five windows each. The display may further comprise windows to display the total number of winning chances, the basic prize unit value, and the total resulting prize money, determined by multiplication of the number of winning chances by the basic prize unit value. The apparatus may include means to enable bets to be staked on all or only upon selected ones of the windows and the respective games associated with said windows.
The outcome of each separate winning chance may depend upon which of a selected group of symbols are displayed and how they are arranged in the final display at the end of the game. For example, a straight middle line of a first symbols such as a "7" may attract a high prize value such as 50 times the basic prize unit, a second symbol such as a "bar", may if arranged in a winning line attract a lower prize value of say 10 times the basic prize unit, and a third symbol such as a "cross" a lower value such as 5 times the basic prize unit. Although not preferred, certain other arrangements, such as a diagonal alignment of prize-winning symbols may have a low value of 3, 2, or 1 times the basic prize unit.
The numbers of symbols of each kind on each virtual reel may be selected to reflect the value placed on each symbol, i.e. there will be fewer high value symbols, and non-scoring symbols may also be included.
A display panel according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example, wherein: -
Figure 1 is a frontal view of a display panel of the game apparatus; and
Figure 2 is a block diagram showing the operation of the apparatus. - A -
The display panel 10 is embodied either as a physical panel, or as a display on a computer or video screen and is shown in Figure 1.
The panel 10 comprises a matrix of twenty (5 by 4 display) real or virtual windows 12 each comprising a display of nine symbols in a three by three array disposed on three actual or simulated reels, and each window performing or simulating a "fruit machine" type game. An indicator display window 14 is disposed below and in association with each respective window 12, and is adapted to provide a numerical display of a win factor associated with the display resulting at the respective window 12 from the playing of a fruit machine game. Further display windows 16, 17, and 18 are provided along the lower edge of the panel 10 to indicate the values of winnings and the manner in which these are calculated. Thus window 16 indicates the total number of 'win factors' indicated by all the indicator display windows 14, window 17 indicates the cash value of a win unit, and window 18 the total resulting prize money. The display panel 10 forms part of a games playing machine, which also includes usual arrangements for collecting stake money or tokens, for retaining the cash or tokens and paying out prizes and enabling collection of the profit earned by the machine by authorised persons.
Figure 2 is a block diagram illustrating the operation of the game playing machine of the invention.
Each window 12a, 12b, 12c etc comprises a nine-segment display simulating a 3 -reel fruit machine display, and the displays are each driven by a separate display driver 40a, 40b, 40c, etc which is in turn controlled by a processor 41a, 41b, 41c etc which advances the respective display rapidly cycling a randomly determined number of times through a sequence of images and bringing each column of segments to independent random stops to determine the outcome of each separate game. The display drivers 40a etc, and processors 41a etc are indicated together by a selection and starter switch SW, which is be programmable to select all, or only some of the windows 12a etc. The processors however each operate completely independently once started, to halt the displays and determine the outcome of each game completely separately from all the others which are carried out concurrently after activation of the switch SW. Each processor 41a etc awards points for the respective result displayed on the respective window 12a etc, and the points are applied to a summation circuit 42.
The total points are determined by the summer 42, and then applied to a multiplier circuit 44 along with a predetermined (but resetable) unit prize value from value memory 43. The value from memory 43 is also applied to a display where the numerical value is displayed at window 16 (see Figure 1) in appropriate currency units. The value determined by the summer 42 is also applied to a second display to appear as numbers at the window 17 of Figure 1.
The value determined by multiplier 44 is then applied to a pay out controller which releases tokens coins or notes to an appropriate value from a token store, and also to a display to appear as a cash value at the window 18 of Figure 1. Some examples of winning and non-winning display combinations are included on five of the windows 12, towards the bottom of the panel 10. A first window 20 displays a winning combination comprising a line of three 'BAR' symbols across the middle line of the display. This may pay a factor of 10 times the basic prize unit and represent a second prize. The corresponding window 14 may therefore display a numeral 10. A second window 22 shows a non- winning combination where there are no prize winning alignments of symbols, and the corresponding window 14 will remain blank, or display a zero. A third window 24 displays a further winning combination, of three aligned 'X's, representing a third level prize, worth for example 5 times the basic prize unit. The corresponding window 14 will then show a numeral 5. Window 26 shows a further non- winning combination, whilst window 28 on the bottom row, shows a first-prize winning combination, in the form of a line of "7"s. This may represent a factor of 50 times the basic prize value.
The total value of the multiplication factors displayed at the window 14 is displayed at the window 16, the basic prize unit value at window 17, and the calculated total prize won at window 18. This may for example read, in the case of the windows shown, and assuming there are no other prize winning displays
65x£0.50 = (total win) £32.50, based on a 50ρ stake.
As there are 20 windows 12 in the display the maximum prize winnable is 20x50x0.50=£500.00, based on a 5Op stake.
As there are up to 20 or more windows playing 20 separate games at once, 20 stakes may be required to being all the windows into action, giving a maximum stake in non-club premises of £10.00 per play.
A player may of course opt to play on fewer than all of the windows, and select the windows upon which he wishes to play, with payment of the appropriate stake.
As up to twenty or more windows may be in play at any time, there is relatively high probability that frequent payouts will be made, with the possibility of an occasional large prize, which serves to maintain interest. The numbers of windows in the panel may of course be varied as desired, but will usually be nine or greater.
The windows will normally be digital video simulations of a fruit machine game, but it is not excluded that a mechanical or electromechanical system with actual reels could be used.
The calculator facility will usually be digital, but mechanical calculator means are not excluded.
