Abstract

A device ( 10 ) for use in reconstructing the left ventricle ( 20 ) of the heart from a diseased state to an appropriate reconstructed state is disclosed. The device includes a sizer ( 10 ) which has a flat first surface ( 72 ) and an apex ( 76 ). The apex ( 76 ) is connected to a generally cylindrical central section ( 80 ), and said central section ( 80 ) is connected to the first surface ( 72 ). The central section (80) and the first surface ( 72 ) of the sizer ( 10 ) are configured so that when the first surface is located abutting the base of the left ventricle ( 20 ) the central section ( 80 ) is located at the location of the interior of the appropriate reconstructed left ventricle ( 20 )• The sizer (10 ) may be used during beating heart surgery or when the heart is arrested. The sizer ( 10 ) also facilitates locating the apex ( 76 ) of the heart during apical reconstruction.
