Abstract

Apparatus (10) for providing electrical power to a vehicle that includes a motor and a battery (14) having a predetermined charging voltage. The apparatus includes an alternator (11), which includes a rotor (22), coupled to be rotated by the motor so as to generate a rotating magnetic field, and a stator (21), including one or more stator coils that are inductively coupled to generate, responsively to the rotating magnetic field, an AC voltage that is at least 50% greater than the charging voltage of the battery. A transformer (12, 23) is coupled to receive and step down the AC voltage to an output voltage that is approximately equal to the charging voltage.
