Definitions
- This invention relates to a shaft for a tool.
- PCT/IB99/01896 describes an aluminium shaft for a tool.
- the shaft has a tube with insert swaged at its opposite ends.
- One of the inserts has a threaded socket and the other of the inserts has a threaded spigot so that two shafts can be connected end-to-end to form a longer shaft.
- a handle can be connected to one end of the longer shaft and a tool head can be connected to the other end of the longer shaft to form a tool.
- the shaft suffers from the disadvantage that the aluminium shaft is a conductor of heat and electricity. Consequently when a tool incorporating the shaft is used for example as an axe by a fireman, it is possible that the shaft could become too hot to hold and/or that holding the shaft could result in an electric shock.
- a composite shaft for a tool includes an elongate metal section surrounded by a polymeric section with the elongate metal section having engaging means at its opposite ends.
- the opposite ends of the elongate metal shaft are enlarged relative to an intermediate portion of the elongate metal shaft.
- the enlarged ends of the elongate metal shaft preferably both comprise sockets or a socket and a spigot.
- the composite shaft preferably includes a deformable washer secured to at least one of the ends of the elongate metal section.
- the elongate metal section preferably includes at least one groove and the polymeric section preferably includes at least one ridge which locates within the groove.
- the elongate metal section has a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves and the polymeric section has a plurality of longitudinally extending ridges complementary in shape to the grooves and located within the grooves.
- the elongate metal section may have four grooves and the polymeric section may have four ridges.
- the elongate metal section is preferably made of steel.
- the polymeric section is preferably moulded over the elongate metal section and it may be made of polyethylene.
- the composite shaft may include at least one hole extending transversely through the composite shaft.
- the polymeric section is preferably a heat and an electrical insulator.
- Figure 1 is a cross-sectional side view of a composite shaft according to the invention.
- Figure 2 is a cross-sectional side view of another embodiment of a composite shaft according to the invention.
- Figure 3 is a cross-sectional end view on line Ill-Ill of figure 2;
- Figure 4 is a plan view of a tool kit
- Figure 5 is an assembled plan view of an axe
- Figure 6 is an assembled plan view of a spade.
- a composite shaft 10 for a tool in the form of an axe 12 or spade 14 has a stainless steel section 16 surrounded by or encased within a polyethylene section 18.
- the steel section 16 has an exposed threaded socket 20 at each of its ends.
- the diameter of the steel section 16 is reduced between the two threaded sockets 20 to form an intermediate section 21.
- Four circumferentially spaced grooves 22 are provided in the intermediate section 21.
- the polyethylene section 18 has four longitudinally extending ridges 24 which are of complementary shape to the grooves 22 and are located within the grooves 22.
- a hole 26 extends through the shaft 10.
- Deformable washers 28 are adhered to the free ends of each socket 20.
- a shaft 30 is similar to the shaft 10 except that the shaft has a threaded spigot 32 at one of its ends.
- the axe 12 and the spade 14 can be formed from a tool kit 34 shown in figure 4.
- the tool kit consists of handles 36, 38, shafts 10 and 30, spade head 40, axe head 44 and two tightening pins 42.
- the tightening pins 42 can be inserted into the holes 26 to tighten the parts of a tool together.
- the polyethylene provides an electrical and thermal barrier to the steel section.
