Abstract

Plaintext is used as the initial configuration of a multi-state dynamical system (e.g., cellular automata). The data message is evolved for T0 time steps, according to particular dynamical rule sets with pre-selected coefficients. The cyphertext (i.e., the encrypted data) is the state of the dynamical system at time T0 such that 0 < T0 < Tf. For decryption, the cyphertext is used as the initial configuration of the multi-state dynamical system. The dynamical system is further evolved for Td time steps (where Tf = T0 + Td) to recover the original plaintext. For symmetric encryption, the same rule set is used for encryption and decryption. For non-symmetric encryption a different rule set is used to evolve the dynamical system from time step T0 to time step Tf.
