Abstract

A knee reconstruction apparatus (40) and method provides for controlling and adjusting the point of fixation of a ligament graft (30), for example a replacement for the anterior cruciate ligament, which permits precisely and repeatably adjusting the length of the ligament graft (30) or graft components (30A, 30B, 30C) with the joint (33) under a prescribed load prior to fixation. A fixture (40) is fixed on the tibia (36) and includes an adjustable clamp (64) that holds a ligament graft (30) anchored or held in the femur (25). The clamp (64) can be moved for adjusting the length of the ligament graft (30), or individual segments (30A, 30B, 30C) of a composite ligament graft (30) while the joint (33) is under a prescribed load. The load carried by one or more individual graft components (30A, 30B, 30C) also can be measured prior to fixation to ensure that each of the segments of a composite ligament graft (30) will carry the desired or selected load for a joint under a prescribed load.
