ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF '10 GILMER HEEL FOR BOOTS AND snons.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1911.
Application filed June 19, 1909. Serial No. 503,115.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. Seances, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mooresville, in the county of Morgan and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a convenient and durable heel for boots and shoes, which shall embody springs in its construction thus giving elasticity to the tread.
Said invention consists in two parts telescopically arranged, with springs interposed between one of said parts and the sole of the shoe whereby it is held elastically outwardly, so as to be capable of yielding under the weight of the wearer, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe provided with a heel embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 an underside plan of such heel and the immediately adjacent parts of the shoe; Fig. 3 ahorizontalsectional view, and Fi 4 and 5 detail transverse sectional views 1 lustrating the construction.
My improved heel is adapted to be attached to any boot or shoe, and the sole 21 of such boot 0r shoe is of an ordinary construction and arrangement. My improved elastic heel embodies a shell portion 22 which forms the outer portion thereof, and said portion is secured firmly to the shoe sole, by screws 23 or otherwise. This outer shell portion is preferably of metal, and a metal bearing plate 24 is preferably interposed between said shell and the leather sole 21. Within said outer shell I place a second or' inner shell 25, which is adapted to move telescopically therein, and the lower surface whereof forms the tread of the heel. This shell 25 has a ledge 25 which is adapted to come in contact with a similar ledge 22 in the shell 22 so that the movement of part 25 relative to part 22 is limited. Interposed between the bottom of part 25 and the plate 24 are one or more springs 26 '(four are shown) by means of which part 25 is held outwardly with considerable spring force. This gives the required elasticity to the heel. When the wearer rests his weight on the heel, the springs will yield somewhat, as will bereadily understood, so that the usual shock due to rigidity of parts is avoided. The spring or springs are kept in place by means of suitable lugs or projections 27 and 28 on the adjacent parts which engage therewith. This member 25, like member 22, is preferably of metal; and, in order to deaden the noise which would result from contact of metal with floors or pavements, I place upon the outer surface thereof a thickness 29 of sole leather or other suitable material, and this constitutes the wearin surface of the heel in use. Having thus ully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A boot or shoe heel comprising a tubular open-ended main body provided at its upper end with a bore having portions the diameter of which exceeds the bore of the lower end so as to form an inwardly projecting ledge, acup-shaped member having a closed lower endsleeved into the main body and provided at its upper end with outwardly extending portions which extend into the enlarged upper portions of the main body so as to engage the ledge, the lower closed end of said cup-shaped member being provided with a wearing surface, spring-retaining portions carried by the inner face of the bottom of the cup, 9. closing plate removably arranged .to close the upper end of the main body, said closing plate carrying spring retaining portions corresponding to the spring-retaining portions of the cup, compression springs arranged within the structure tions, and fastening members passlng through the upper portion of the main body tpl hold the said main body in place upon a s 0e.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this fourteenth day of June, A. I). one thou sand nine hundred and nine.
GEORGE R. SCRUGGS. [L.S.] Witnesses: CHESTER BRADFORD, THOMAS W. MCMEANS.
