To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUSTIN S. MlnAoHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyne, in the county of Charlevoix and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Heels for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to spring heels for shoes, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which can be manufactured chiefly from metal, and which when in operation will present an elastic tread.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the shoe showing parts broken away and showing the application to the shoe of my improved spring heel. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the lower member of the heel. Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged section through the heel.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown particularly in Fig. 1 a shoe A which may be of any suitable construction, and as shown the said shoe is provided .with my improved spring heel 1 consisting of an upper hollow metallic member 2 having a body portion 3 secured by means of a screw or suitable fastening device to the shoe A at the heel end thereof, and this body has depending therefrom a plurality of flanges 4L disposed in spaced relation to each other. A lower member 5 is provided and is somewhat similar in construction to the upper member 2 and consists of a main body 6 having a plurality of upwardly extending guide flanges 7 disposed inwardly of the flanges 4: upon the upper member.

The body portion 6 of the lower member is provided with a series of recesses or cavities 8 in which the heads 9 of bolts or fastening devices 10 are disposed. The bolts or fastening devices just described extend through passages 11 formed in the body portion 6 of the lower member of the heel and the upper threaded ends of the said bolts are engaged with nuts 12. The nuts 12 are seated in correspondingly formed recesses in the body portion 3 of the upper member 2 of the heel. A pair of leaf springs 13 is employed, and as illustrated each spring is disposed between the body portions 3 and 6 of the upper and lower members of the heel and each spring is operatively connected with one of the herein described bolts 10. The springs as herein shown are of elliptical form, but may be of any obvious formation as will be readily understood.

The lower member of the heel has removably secured thereto a combined wear plate and stop 141 which extends across the passages or cavities 8 formed in the body portion 6 of the lower member of the heel and is secured to said body portion in any suitable manner. The construction just described is such that the wear plate or stop is normally disposed in spaced relation to the heads 9 of the bolts 10 and the said plate as will appear obvious serves as means to prevent the outward movement beyond a predetermined point of the lower member of the heel and is thus provided to hold the parts or members against casual displacement. A heel as herein shown and described is extremely simple in construction may be attached to shoes of the ordinary type or form and will be found extremely desirable when in use and will resent suficient elasticity to entirely obvlate the use of rubber for the heel of the shoe.
